Huddersfield University Students’ Union is student led and student focused. Our vision is to have a positive impact on the lives of all our students.
How the Students’ Union is run: The SU is headed by 5 full time Executive Officers, known, collectively as ‘the Exec’ who have been elected to run the Students’ Union on behalf of you, the students, alongside full and part time permanent staff and around 70 student staff. The officers are representative of all areas of student life , you can see more about them, their role and how to contact them page 5.
The SU receives funding from the University to support its student membership and supplements this with income from the commercial service areas – the Students’ Union Bar, Café and Shop. Any profits go back into the Students’ Union to give better services and facilities to our members.

For example, if your work is continually

Student Survival Meeting lots of interesting people from across the globe as well as being spoiled with a fantastic fortnight filled with an exciting and varied entertainments programme. Here are some top tips for those first few weeks in University.
Say Hello! Don’t be shy – introduce yourself. Everyone is in the same position as you and will probably be just as scared too. If you’re in halls your flatmates will probably be the people who you spend the rest of your uni life with, so make sure you hit it off right. Ask if they need help unpacking, ask where they’re from, what course they’re doing – anything! Don’t hide away in halls or at home either. There are loads of places to chill on campus….. like the Students’ Union!
Temptations
e
Student life can be a hot bed for experimenting. You’re free and independent and there is plenty to tempt you! However, don’t be naïve about recreational drug taking and sexual health the Students’ Union Advice Centre is on hand for help and advice.
You’re about to have the most fun you’ve ever had.
Ear Plugs Student accommodation can often be loud, crazy places to live in. When the rockers next door are moshing late into the night, or your Britney loving house mate is dancing the night away… reach for the plugs!
Register with a doctor. The University Health Centre can be found at the bottom of campus and is available to students at Storthes Hall and students who live within a 3 mile radius of campus.
Safe and secure If you are bringing valuables, it might be worth getting your stuff insured - have a look at the Endsleigh leaflet delivered with this guide, or check on the web and see if you can get yourself a good deal. If you’re feeling a little bit apprehensive or maybe a little lost when you first get here remember everyone else is in the same boat as you!

The Students’ Union works hard to ensure minimal environmental impact, focussing closely on energy consumption and wastage. We are proud that none of our waste goes to landfill. This year 15.44 tonnes of waste from the Students’ Union was recycled, with 13.66 tonnes being recycled locally. We also look at how we can reduce our comsumption - this year we have decreased our electricity consumption by 2,145 kilowatts - that’s enough to power a student flat for 5 months! The Students’ Union encourages students to get involved with our environmental policies and activities. This goes further than just encouraging you to recycle your waste. The Students’ Union Exec team are setting up an area at Storthes Hall – the University’s biggest student halls of residence where interested students can The freebie bag we’ll give you grow their own veg! As much as we love the Hudd, we know not everyone will be based on Queensgate Campus. If you are going to be based at our campus in Barnsley then here’s some extra info for you. We’ll be sending you some further information in the next few weeks about making the most of student life in Barnsley. The Students’ Union at Barnsley has an office on Level 3 near the cafe. This is your main point of call if you need advice or information, would like to get involved with the Campus Committee, start or join a club/society. There is a student common room on level 3, available throughout the day, with comfy chairs, sofas and Apple Macs and an x-box 360 – a great place to chill & find out what’s going on when you’re not in lectures.
Student activities with the iZone kick starts the academic year with a Football Club, Pool Society and the start of a Barnsley F.R.A.G (gaming) Society. To get involved with them don’t miss Freshers’ Fayre and get signed up. There is plenty of scope for more clubs and societies to be set up this year, just come and see us in the SU office! We can also give you the opportunity to get involved in the Union itself by becoming a Course Rep, making changes, standing in elections, running campaigns and being involved in the process of democracy. Come and meet us at Freshers’ Fayre on enrolment day between 10am-1pm on Monday 19 September in the TV Studio.
The Campus Committee Hello and welcome to all the new students arriving here at University Campus Barnsley. Within your chosen course you will no doubt make many friends while getting the best out of your education. However, whilst your University work is crucial, social activities and having fun is equally as important. That is what your UCB Campus Committee is here for. The committee consists of three members: Matt Winning (Chair), Vijay Bhutada (Campaigns and Communications Officer) and Miles Lunney (Events and Activities Officer). We will all be working together as part of the Students’ Union to provide you with the best student life going here at the Barnsley.

Oldham might be t’other side of the Pennines, but we love our Lancashire based students just as much as our Yorkshire ones! If you are going to be studying at our Oldham campus then here’s how to get the most out of student life in Oldham. We’ll be sending some more info in the next few weeks too. The Students’ Union office is based on the 2nd floor in the Library and Computing Centre. Here you will find members of staff in our ‘pod’ (you will have to come and find us to understand the pod facility). This is your main point of call if you need advice or information, would like to get involved with the Campus committee, start or join a club/society.
Here in Oldham we have a Football Club up and running with plenty of scope for more - to get involved with them don’t miss Freshers’ Fayre and get signed up! If what we currently have is not your thing we would love to get you involved by starting other sports clubs and societies! Just come and see us at the pod. You should also keep an eye out for the one off trips to places like Alton Towers as part of our trips program. We can also give you the opportunity to get involved in the Union itself by becoming a course rep, making changes, standing in elections, running campaigns and being involved in the process of democracy.
Come and meet us at Freshers’ Fayre on enrolment day between 10am-1pm on Tuesday 209 September in the Main Foyer
The Campus Committee We represent students and their views on campus and support students throughout their academic studies. We deal with any issues that Oldham students might have and give them all the possible help and direction that is needed. The Campus Committee consists of four members who have different roles and responsibilities; Shah Islam (Chair), Steven Fergusson (Representation & Welfare) and Nibras Ahmed (Campaigns & Communication). If you’re wondering who is the fourth person then currently there is no one. If you fancy being part of the Students’ Union then the position of Activities and Events officer is up for grabs. All students will be notified with the details nearer to the time. Remember have fun while studying here and enjoy your time at University Campus Oldham.

GUIDE to Huddersfield
Huddersfield is a true Yorkshire town, full of surprising qualities, strong traditions, impressive architecture, quality shopping, top class sport, exciting festivals and artistic reputation all set on the edge of the wonderful scenery of the Peak District National Park and South Pennines.
Places to visit The unquestionably superb location of Huddersfield means that a trip to the larger northern cities of Leeds and Manchester is simple from the train station. With trains just about every 20 minutes to Leeds and every half an hour to Manchester, you’d be silly not to!

Around Huddersfield as well there is plenty to see and do. From the beautiful views on a sunny day at Castle Hill to a whole host of interesting museums to the old quaint streets of nearby town, Holmfirth – the location for hugely popular TV series Last of the Summer Wine – you will not be bored, guaranteed!
