STUTTGART RESIDENTIAL ESTATE stuttgart, germany Stuttgart is the capital and largest city of the Southern
German
state
of
Baden-Württemberg.
Unlike
its
neighboring city, Esslingen am Neckar, Stuttgart was devastated under heavy bombing during WWII, leaving more than half of its buildings
razed.
Consequently,
the
difference
in
urban
composition is clear as day between the two. While Esslingen boasts the picturesque gingerbread aesthetic of a sleepy medieval village, Stuttgart is dominated by the familiar boxy architecture common to many modern cities. To tackle the region’s lack of housing, large housing estates (Großwohnsiedlung), composed of rows of uniform apartment buildings, were built all over Germany. Our case study estate “Neues Heim”, or New Home, was drawn up in 1949. Perhaps the best way to describe its attributes is that it has none. It is mass-produced housing, featureless but efficient. However, it was designed for the family structure of 1950s Germany. It no longer satisfies the wants and needs of the contempory resident of Stuttgart. How can it be adapted? How much cultural identity can post-war Germany tolerate? This is a renovation project. The prompt asks for a housing adaptation for the co-existence of both young and elderly inhabitants.

(TOP) The project is located in Stuttgart, Germany, on the southeastern state of Baden-WĂźrttemburg. The project location is pictured in this map. To the east runs the Neckar river. City center and the main transportation hubs are located to the south. The neighborhood is a residential area that can be most likened to the suburbs found in the US. (BOTTOM) These are original drawings of the complex dated to the 23rd of June, 1949. The apartment furthest to the West is the building for this project (1701).

CYAN The existing building is extruded on the North and South sides to give additional space and light to the communal areas found on each end. The three stairwell protrusions on the East facade is reduced to two and the stairs are rotated 90 degrees for better programming purposes. Window dimensions and sizes are changed.

MAGENTA A new form for the roof replaces the existing roof. The pitch is steepened to give better living quality to an additional attic level. Dormers provide headspace and light to the rooms. The style and shape are specifically designed to allude to traditional German architecture in order to give a sense of belonging and vernacularism.
YELLOW As the original building lacked insulative qualities, the exterior walls from the ground floor to the second floor (Third Floor in US) is given an exterior treatment of insulation and finish. The basement level is unchanged as insulation is unnecessary as well as to give the impression of ‘floating’ reminiscent of the Bauhaus building.

SECTION PERSPECTIVE *Please refer to the plans on the previous page to see the location of the section cut. (INTERIOR COMMUNAL SPACES) Each communal space is purposefully shared between two levels in order to encourage interaction between the inhabitants. Between 10 to 14 people share each of these spaces. They are located on each end of the building. (EXTERIOR GARDEN) The exterior space is composed of a series of sloping hills inspired by the hilly landscape of the region. They are meant to discourage sports activities that the elderly residents have complained about while replacing them with quieter activities. The winding paths allow both the elderly and small families to casually enjoy the outdoors.

TRAMMEL FOSSIL PARK sharonville, ohio The Trammel Fossil Park is a plot of land in Sharonville, Ohio, known for its abundance in fossils of the Cincinnatian Series – the uppermost rocks of the Ordovician System in North America. The fossils of this series were deposited approximately 450 million years ago. For us, this is a number that is difficult to understand. After all, we ourselves only live around a century at most. The purpose of the structure is for the study and preservation of the Cincinnatian fossils, so I approached the idea of permanence with what is arguably the basis of all architectural design – human scale. I wished for the complex to feel temporary and fleeting, because, in the face of 450 million years, we are truly transient beings. How is this portrayed at a scale that we can understand? How can architecture feel short-lived? My answer to that is scaffolding. In architecture, scaffolding is transience. Therefore, I designed the entire complex to be constructed out of the endless possibilities of scaffolding, forming a temporaral structure that does not disrupt the fossils underneath. Its lack of shelter and inability to moderate
temperatures
creates
a
rugged
and
exposed
environment that is meant to showcase our vulnerability as humans and thus highlight the timelessness of the fossils.

SCAFFOLDING DIAGRAM 1of2 Due to file size limitations, modelling every component at the scale of the proposed complex was impossible. However, in order to demonstrate a clear understanding of the components and capabilities of scaffolding, a mock structure (pictured below) was modelled instead. This mock structures contains each and every scaffolding component that is used in the actual proposed complex. For the actual project, simplified poles were used to construct the bare bones of each structure for the purpose of diagramming and rendering.
(A) QUARTER PLYWOOD PANEL The quarter plywood panel is a multi-purpose component that can act as light flooring or ceiling component.

(D) HANGING REED WEAVE The handing reed weave is a non-structural component intended to provide layering and translucent partitioning.

(E) TRUSS The truss allows for the spanning of two units without the need for a standard in between. A standard may be added on top of the middle section of the truss.
(I) PLYWOOD WALL Plywood walls are attached to the ledgers with clamps to provide non-translucent sides to the structures.

(T) RAMP TRUSS The ramp truss system provides framework for plywood ramps that hook onto multiple ledgers. Two ramp trusses are required.

(M) DIAGONAL RAILING Diagonal railing can be fitted onto the standards to provide safety to the stairs.

COMPLEX COMPONENTS ISO 780
The complex is designed as an experience through a sequence of layers. As if travelling through the multiple sedimentary layers of earth, the complex takes the visitor through combinations of screens, elevations, and penetrating views. Rather than occupy a space, visitors are expected to pass through them. In both material-use and experience, the Trammel Fossil Park complex is meant to be permeable.

PRICE HILL RENOVATION cincinnati, ohio 943 Rosemont Avenue is a single-family detached residence with a backyard. It is located in a suburb to the west of downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. The house has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and an attic. The market value at the time of the project was valued at $65,000. The house is truly unremarkable in every sense of the word. Multiple renovations have been made over the years, however, it is clear that they have not been successful in raising the property value. The sequence of spaces is awkward. The size and placement of the bedrooms are inadequate and ambiguous. Despite the many south facing windows, the interior manages to be feel dingy and claustrophobic. The project intent is to ‘flip’ the house in a way that would hopefully turn a profit. Major changes in massing and style were avoided in order to maintain the original integrity of the house. Instead, focus was diverted to fleshing out materials, spatial sequences, and accurate construction methods. Although not required, the house was modelled in its entirety. This included the foundation, wood framing, ductwork, sheathing, and wall finishes among many other things. I believe this has provided me with a better understanding of construction and aided in the design process.

INTERIOR DETAILING After creating the structure and bare bones of the project, attention was made to the interior. The strategic revealing or hiding of the structure was a major driver of design decisions. The spatial experience of transitioning between rooms or moving down a corridor is an essential part of any interior design. Here, the ‘doorways’ were trimmed with hard wood framing to mark the threshold of a transition. The floor structure was completely redesigned to allow for exposed joist ceilings in the corridors, bringing a sense of rhythm to the circulation. The HVAC ductwork system was placed specifically to avoid jarring protrusions from the ceilings. They snake under and above the floor systems and are hidden from view with built in furniture. All in all, I selected my materials carefully, not only emphasizing wood but also using different kinds of wood in different orientations to achieve the desired effect. The result I hoped to create was a home that felt contemporary yet rustic; open yet personal, brightly-lit, and warm.
