Ensembles
Any UIC student, regardless of major, has a place in our music ensembles. Auditions are for appropriate placement in the ensemble, not for acceptance. Auditions typically occur during the first week of the semester. All ensembles are one credit courses. Learn more at go.uic.edu/comeplay.

STUDENT-RUN ORGANIZATIONS
Downtown Voices draws top singers from the UIC choir program and perform a capella music around Chicago in concerts and competitions.
Kappa Kappa Psi is a co-educational fraternal organization that advances college and university bands through dedicated service and support.

MINOR
The music minor requires 21 credits through courses in Music Theory, Ear Training, Keyboard Skills, History, and Literature. To apply for the music minor, visit our website and fill out a music minor application.
A theory diagnostic test must be taken for entry unless the student has already received an “A” in MUS 107.
DEGREES
The Department of Music offers four degrees:
Bachelor of Arts in Music
Students gain a strong foundation in music theory, history, and literature. Well-suited for students pursuing a double degree. Audition Required.
Bachelor of Arts in Music Business
Students combine music study with coursework in accounting, music business, marketing, and finance, with up to two internships in Chicago’s music industry. Audition Required.
Bachelor of Music in Performance
Students build upon the foundations of music performance with weekly lessons by leading professional Chicago musicians. Audition Required.
Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies
Students prepare for careers as professional jazz musicians, focusing on fundamentals and performance. Audition Required.
Current students looking to pursue a degree in music should:
- Visit the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts Student Affairs office in Jefferson Hall, Room 208, and complete an Inter-College Transfer Form.

FAQS
Does UIC have a music department?
Yes! UIC has an active music department, located in the School of Theatre & Music (STM).
I am not a music degree student; can I participate in an ensemble?
Absolutely! We welcome students from every UIC college to make music at STM. Ensembles are open to all UIC students.
Do I have to audition for the ensembles?
Auditions are only for chair placement in the correct ensemble. Everyone can participate. You do not need to audition in order to register.
Are ensembles classes? Do I get a grade?
Each ensemble is a graded course worth one credit. This credit can count toward your electives.
Are there other ensembles available that are not for class credit?
Yes. STM also has an a capella group called Downtown Voices. Contact us for details.
I am pre-med and heard I cannot get a degree in music. Is that true?
No. It is possible to earn a degree in music and another discipline at the same time. However, a dual degree requires 30 extra credit hours. Be sure to speak to an advisor for more information.
Can I take lessons through the university?
No. Private lessons are for music degree students only, but we may be able to help you find an instructor. Contact us for details.
Can I get a scholarship to play in an ensemble?
Yes, you can be considered for an award if you’re not a music degree student; based on an audition that shows us your potential to contribute to the success of the UIC music ensemble program. Students receiving a Music Merit Award must participate in at least one musical ensemble for every semester they receive an award.
