Dean’s Report 2018

In its half century of existence, our college has grown from three programs to become a top-ranked, AACSB accredited, research-based business school with an international reputation. We have built highly regarded departments in all areas and continue to be recognized by the business community for our outstanding graduates. We have come a long way by increasing faculty and student numbers, adding two PhD programs, and establishing the UIC Business Liautuad Graduate School, but we aim to do much more. We have big plans for the future, including updating curriculum to meet the changing needs of a global marketplace; adding departments to round out our degree offerings in order to give students a broader range of opportunities; recruiting faculty who are at the top of their field; expanding upon programs for undergraduate and graduate students that build their skills and networks; and breaking ground on a UIC Business building that will reflect the strength and upward trajectory of the college.

Even as UIC Business grows and looks to the future, we hold true to our mission of serving our extraordinary students, who are the foundation of the college. UIC Business students are tenacious, talented, hardworking, and come from highly diverse backgrounds. They strengthen the college and their peers by sharing new perspectives and viewpoints and engaging in real research with faculty while we help shape them into leaders who have an executive presence and are at ease in the boardroom.

A NOTE FROM THE DEAN

In this, the inaugural issue of the Dean’s Report, I want to first express my gratitude to the alumni and friends of UIC Business for their support and commitment to the college and its students. UIC Business is poised for a bright future, and alumni and friends are a big part of the reason why. As one of our more than 35,000 alumni and supporters, you know the power of a UIC Business degree. More than a credential, it is the background and preparation that gave you the opportunity to have an impact in your career, community, and beyond. As the stature of UIC Business grows, so does the value of your degree.

In the following pages you will find stories of the ways in which we are preparing these future leaders. This report is meant to serve as a snapshot of the growth and innovation taking place at the school, but by no means is it comprehensive. If you have not been on campus in a while, please consider a visit and witness the growth and change for yourself. We would love to see you. With gratitude,

Michael Mikhail, PhD Dean

Dean’s Report 2018

Dr. Hu’s research focuses on the intersection between social and technical aspects of information technology. He explores how large-scale, fine-grained online digital traces of individual behavior can help us understand the heterogeneity in individual decision-making and interactions across channels, and how the knowledge learned from such digitized behavioral traces can help facilitate transformations in various domains, such as customer relationship management (CRM), crisis management, brand image management, and online advertising. To reach those goals, Dr. Hu developed stateof-the-art data analytical techniques such as text mining, deep learning, sentiment analysis and image classification. He then combined these methods from other disciplines such as econometrics and economic structural modeling to mine, model, and predict individual behavior on various online platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Kickstarter. His research has been published in premier journals such as MIS Quarterly, ACM Data and Information Quality, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, and top conferences such as ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence, and Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. His research has won several awards and honors, including Best Paper Nominations at the ACM CHI conference, INFORMS CIST conference and INFORMS eBusiness Best Paper Award. In addition to two granted patents by USPTO, his research has also been widely covered by national and international media outlets such as ABC, PBS, WIRED, the Seattle Times, FastCompany, and the Sydney Morning Herald. DR. JOHN LYNCH

Assistant Professor, Managerial Studies PhD in Management, University of Georgia

Dr. Lynch primarily researches the workplace experience of employees who possess social stigmas. “Multiple Pathways to Becoming and Acting as an Ally" is an examination of why people become allies of stigmatized populations and how they diversify communities in the workplace. An unfortunate reality is that these employees can experience both overt and subtle forms of negative treatment. However, they also can have positive experiences. A project Dr. Lynch currently has underway is examining how employees can act as allies. For example, how a heterosexual employee may support their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender coworkers. This research will inform policies and practices that organizations enact to make their workplaces more inclusive for people from diverse backgrounds.

DR. YUHENG HU

Assistant Professor, Information and Decision Sciences PhD in Computer Science, Arizona State University

Dr. Lynch conducts related research on how people define, express, and protect elements of who they are in the workplace. Given the prevalence of social media and privacy concerns in today’s society, this research sheds light on how employees can effectively manage and integrate their personal life into their work. He also researches employee volunteerism in the community. Many companies encourage their employees to get involved in their community, and there are many potential benefits for the employee, the organization, and the broader community.

In addition to his research, Dr. Lynch teaches classes on organizational behavior, human resource management, and work-life issues. To learn more about his work, visit business.uic.edu/faculty/ john-lynch

SPROUTING LEADERS Sprouting Leaders is a nonprofit founded in 2012 by UIC College of Business Administration alumnus Raul Rosas ‘12 and UIC College RAUL ROSAS of Engineering alumnus FOUNDER, VICE Juan Camacho ‘14. The PRESIDENT organization seeks to promote BS ACCOUNTING ‘12 academic and personal development in Chicago youth from underserved communities. By providing one-on-one mentorship and education to students beginning when they are in middle school, Sprouting Leaders prepares participants for success in high school, college, and beyond. "It's incredible to see what a group of young leaders from Chicago can do,” Raul states. “We are truly making a difference and empowering the next generation of leaders in Chicago.” To learn more about Sprouting Leaders and how to get involved, please visit sproutingleaders.org.

PAYING IT FORWARD “Serving on the Executive Committee of the BAC (Business Advisory Council) and mentoring young professionals is my way of paying it forward. During my time at UIC and throughout my career, I have been the beneficiary of great mentoring. Mentoring helps you see what you don’t know you don’t know and if you are open to it, can help you develop skills and understanding well beyond your years of experience. It can truly change your trajectory. As a mentor, when you can help make a difference in someone’s life, even if it’s small, it is a wonderful gift. I am very fortunate to continue my work at UIC as a mentor and as a part of the BAC.” HEIDI VERBISCER, CPA BS ACCOUNTING, '99

Transforming student potential into career success UIC Business offers a rigorous education and career pathway for students from highly diverse backgrounds. We are committed to offering innovative programs and support so that UIC Business students may realize their full academic and career potential. IGNITE: THE CAMPAIGN FOR UIC

Elevating research profile As Chicago’s only public research university, developing new knowledge is paramount to the educational experience of our students and to UIC Business’s contributions to 21st century business practice. To realize our ambitions for rigorous academic inquiry and innovative thought leadership, we need to attract the best faculty and be seen as a site for multi-disciplinary excellence. Developing and deploying resources to increase the number of faculty fellowships, chairs, and professorships will enable us to recruit top faculty. Establishing programs for visiting scholars and professorships, and hosting national conferences will attract world-renowned academics and business leaders to our campus and promote the exchange of knowledge among faculty, students, and alumni.
