Dean’s Message Join Us in IGNITE: The Campaign for UIC
Dear Alumni and Friends:
I am excited how IGNITE: The Campaign for UIC will impact the College of Dentistry over the next five years. I am excited about the future of our hard-working dental students, faculty, and staff, and the new and innovative ways our students are learning and growing—and how all will benefit from the success of the campaign.
Our future includes: Collaborations taking place across the University to bring the UIC Health Sciences Colleges together, realizing a new model of care called UI Health. Dentistry will have a leading role in the creation of these models centering on the holistic, cumulative health of the residents of Illinois and people across the globe.
2
Patients from across the age and health spectrum who come seeking comfort, bright new smiles, and a future devoid of pain, filled with the promise to do well in the world.
The dental profession being at the forefront of delivering accessible oral health care to all Americans in a number of ways, especially with our graduates lighting the path.
Our alumni, friends, and partners—all feeling their investments in UIC reaping rewards and knowing together, we will Change the Future of Oral Health.

Private giving during the IGNITE campaign is crucial to the College of Dentistry. Visiting with Dean Clark Stanford (left) is Dr. Frank A. Maggio (right), Loyola ’71, UIC Periodontics ’75, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Periodontics, He and his wife, Christine, made a generous naming gift for the Department of Periodontics Sterilization Room.
With this excitement comes a great deal of confidence. I know that at the culmination of IGNITE: The Campaign for UIC, we will have transformational changes at the College of Dentistry. This is indeed a campaign like no other. Through the success of IGNITE, the College of Dentistry will affect change at many levels. We will not sit back and wait for others to do so. UIC does not react—we lead. For two decades, UIC has been at the forefront of transforming dental education; increasing access and diversity; addressing disparities; creating healthier communities; and driving discovery. We cannot stop. There is too much to do. Partner with us and increase the depth and impact of student scholarships we can offer. You will open doors to hungry and determined minds who want to join this noble and wonderful profession. There are many aspiring students knocking at our door—help us open it for them. Partner with us to establish the level of endowment needed to retain and recruit the finest faculty in both our clinical and research enterprises. Endowments are the lifeblood of the highest quality institutions of higher learning. The IGNITE campaign will allow us to secure endowed chairs, professorships, and fellowships enhancing the learning and discovery of the most innovative and creative faculty. Based within a framework of accountability, oversight, and humanitarian ethics, we will assure the finest and most respectful education for our students. Innovation and creativity through your support will propel us to be a stronger global leader in dentistry. Help us create healthier communities by expanding our students’ ability to visualize their role in the process of improving equity of health. (Access and equity are different things.)
Elevate our level of discovery. To maintain our position among the top two percent of the dental programs globally. It is key that we excel in the areas of the “omics” (Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, etc.), patient-oriented outcomes, and implementation science. These areas of research are often called “Big Data” due to the complexity and inherent interdisciplinary nature of the research efforts. I do not know what the dental profession will look like 100 years from now. However, I know there will be a dental profession. It probably won’t look like anything I can conceive of at this time. Imagine creating a legacy lasting far into the future, enabling the changes we cannot even imagine. Visualize a gift shaping and guiding the profession a century from now. I invite you to consider your legacy as a partner with the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. It all starts with a single spark. Be the spark that illuminates our pathway as we Change the Future of Oral Health. Wouldn’t that be a beautiful legacy? Thank you,
Clark M. Stanford, DDS, PhD UIC Distinguished Professor and Dean College of Dentistry 3

IGNITE: The Campaign for UIC will be transformational for the College of Dentistry By William S. Bike
T
he University of Illinois at Chicago launched Ignite: The Campaign for UIC last October when hundreds of alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students came together at the Pavilion for a festive kick-off event. That evening, Chancellor Michael Amiridis announced the University’s overall goal of $750 million. The College of Dentistry’s goal is $37 million and its underlying theme

is “Changing the Future of Oral Health.” The campaign will conclude on June 30, 2022. “I am pleased to see that the College of Dentistry has set an ambitious goal of $37 million over the course of the IGNITE campaign,” said Chancellor Amiridis. “I hope that you will be inspired to join with many UIC dental alumni, graduates of the Loyola and Northwestern dental programs, and our foundation and corporate partners, who have made generous gifts during the early phases of the campaign. “Together, you will help the College of Dentistry succeed in a transformational campaign that will position us to change the future of oral health,” Chancellor Amiridis said. “For two decades, UIC has been at the forefront of transforming dental education; increasing access and diversity; addressing disparities; creating healthier communities; and driving discovery,” said Dean Clark Stanford. “We cannot stop here. There is too much to do. “Through this campaign, we will create a legacy for the future to continuously create opportunities. We will never close doors to people because of the cost, resources, complexity, difficulty, and challenges of a complex profession. We want to continuously create opportunities to let everyone have a chance. “The College over the last 100 years has been in a unique position to provide opportunities to people of all backgrounds to become experts and leaders in the United States, if not the world. We want to offer a grand opportunity for every one of our future students and faculty,” Dean Stanford said. The UIC College of Dentistry ranks among the top two percent of the world’s most prestigious dental institutions. “We have excellence in education, research, and patient outcomes,” explained Dean Stanford. Given this honored position, however, the College wants to achieve more. “We will not be satisfied until we eradicate oral disease, and drive discoveries to cure oral cancer and accelerate the regeneration of tissues,” Dean Stanford continued. “We will do this through the creation of centers of excellence in translational research, including the area of analysis of large data sets (“Big Data”); a transformation area that is revolutionizing science. “Our focus will be on wound healing; geriatric oral health; novel approaches to address oral health equity; creation of sustainable models in dental education; and continuing our evolution tools to fuel our hungry students with the education they need to become the world’s leaders in oral health delivery and discovery,” he said.

A Campaign for Unity and Achievement As Chancellor Amiridis noted, IGNITE: The Campaign for UIC is bringing together a variety of partners to achieve these goals. During the IGNITE campaign, the College will leverage its world-wide status and position of leadership to improve the manner in which students learn and their view of how the profession impacts society. “Our next important steps will directly address these challenges by creating a sustainable model of dental education, recruiting and retaining talented faculty, and promoting relevant research that includes basic and translational science and community based activities,” Dean Stanford said. “Success in this campaign will propel us forward to where our
students are performing at the top one to two percent in the nation, if not globally,” he added. IGNITE: The Campaign for UIC will provide the resources for the College to focus on five key areas.
Realize a new model of care We will partner with fellow UIC health sciences colleges to realize a model of providing healthcare throughout Illinois and the State. We envision a model that allows patients to see a team of primarycare providers—dentists, physicians, nurse practitioners, and many others in the primary care team, all in one visit located in a clinic in their own community. “The patients in the future are going to be much more complex in terms of their medical, social, and emotional history, and we’re going to have to provide an education that

is immersive and makes our future graduates competent in that complex environment,” Dean Stanford said. “They need to be able to operate within the primary care environment of the future where they are going to be working much closer with colleagues from all different parts of the healthcare system.”
Support students
The future of the College is in its people, so attracting and supporting the most talented and ambitious students is critical. “The IGNITE campaign from the College’s perspective is to really focus on student outcomes,” Dean Stanford said. “The best way to do that is through continuously improving our faculty, because faculty are an important part of the student outcomes, as well as increase the amount of student scholarships to

IGNITE Kick-Off support a broader range of students to be able to come here and be able to experience the profession of dentistry.” He noted that scholarships are crucial because there is a concern that some “people who traditionally would be excellent dentists aren’t even considering entering the profession because of the cost.” “There are many ways to support the IGNITE campaign and we invite alumni and friends to create named endowed scholarships that are enduring or to designate their support to the A.C.E. Student Scholarship Fund, which provides current use scholarship dollars annually to help alleviate student indebtedness,” said Associate Dean for Advancement Mark J. Valentino.
Partner for innovation
We will enter into public/private partnerships where research interests align. “There are two big areas of exploding science right now in the areas of health and healthcare,” said Dr. Lyndon Cooper, Associate Dean for Research. “One is the area of ‘Big Data,’ which deals with everything from the microbes, the fungi, and the viruses that make up who we are,” Dr. Cooper said. “The interplay among them is so important to most of the chronic diseases we treat. Understanding that really is a computational issue. Big Data science provides strategic linkages and bridges to other expertise, and makes sure that dentistry plays a leading role. “The other area extremely important for us is implementation science, looking at everything from design, to how a patient identifies that they have a health issue, to how they engage with a health provider, to how they get themselves— both individually as well as a population— to a state of health, and maintain that health,” Dr. Cooper said. “This is so important because this is where many of

IGNITE Kick-Off our other allied health colleagues are going, and dentistry needs to take a leadership position.” In addition, Dr. Cooper said, the College is also particularly strong in regenerative medicine, and among the College’s IGNITE goals are obtaining funding for a Center for Regenerative Medicine and an Endowed Chair for its Director. “Endowing faculty positions to retain and recruit the brightest and the best faculty will allow the College to build on the excellence of its research enterprise and donors who fund research projects will be our partners in incredible discovery over the next five years and beyond,” added Valentino. “Private support in this critical space also will give our students increased research opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.”
Fund faculty excellence
We will secure endowed chairs and professorships to attract and retain the faculty expertise and bandwidth necessary to carry out the strategic goals we outline. “Recruiting and retaining the very best faculty is one of the biggest challenges—there’s a lot of competition out there,” Dean Stanford said. “We have to make sure that when we recruit, that potential faculty member knows he or she is coming to a place of excellence. “One measure of excellence is having endowed faculty positions, which provide additional resources to allow the faculty member to do great things, like trying innovative educational approaches, innovative science, and innovation in terms of addressing social equity issues,” he added. “Endowments are the lifeblood of the highest quality institutions
of higher learning,” Dean Stanford noted. “The IGNITE campaign will allow us to secure endowed chairs, professorships, and fellowships enhancing the learning and discovery of our most innovative and creative faculty.”
Invest in infrastructure
We will continue to make strides in updating our infrastructure, technology, and learning environments to create a comfortable, contemporary, and welcoming environment for our students, staff, and the populations we serve. “Students not only want the best in terms of faculty, but they want the best in technology,” Dean Stanford explained. “They want to know that when they will have the best education they possibly can. That takes the creation of leading-edge facilities, so facilities are going to be an ongoing part of this campaign.”
A Fire Inside of Us “There is a fire inside of us—a motivation to reach beyond our recent achievements to pursue new opportunities and to chase dreams, no matter our place of heritage or circumstance,” Dean Stanford said. “The College of Dentistry invites you to be a partner with us in a campaign like no other,” Dean Stanford said. “We begin a new journey of discovery with a boundless energy to do good in the world.” UIC Chancellor Michael Amiridis agrees.
8
“I look forward to joining with Dean Clark Stanford in thanking you for the many ways you will guarantee the success of IGNITE: The Campaign for UIC,” Chancellor Amiridis added. “We have an excellent dental school— one of the finest in the United States—and I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish.”
The College is well-positioned for the IGNITE campaign with Valentino as Associate Dean for Advancement, who has served as the chief Advancement officer for the College for more than 25 years. “During my quarter century at UIC, I have had the privilege to engage with hundreds of donors who
UIC
have provided generous resources to help us transform dental education, conduct path-breaking research, improve the delivery of patient care, and expand access and equity through our community outreach and legislative activities,” Valentino said. “I have seen how scholarships have opened doors for dental students who otherwise might not have been able to pursue their dreams, and how endowed positions have recruited and retained excellent faculty. “I have watched with admiration as our clinical and research faculty and administration have worked tirelessly, side-by-side with our students, residents, and staff, to transform a very good dental school into one that others aspire to become,” he added. During the “quiet phase” of the IGNITE campaign, Valentino and his team already have raised $11.3 million of the $37 million goal for the College.
Having led the College’s Advancement efforts through several campaigns, Valentino knows firsthand “what the impact of a successful capital campaign can have on an institution,” he said. “In large part, the excellence of our College of Dentistry is a direct result of the generosity of the donors who supported our previous campaigns.” The IGNITE campaign “truly will be one like no other, because we are in a unique position to achieve all that we aspire to do,” Valentino said. “IGNITE will allow us to reach higher and make the world a better place. We will create new models of care, cure disease, increase access, and spark the future. “We will accomplish this with your participation,” Valentino said, noting that he looks forward to “the opportunity to sit down individually to hear your story and learn what excites you about the IGNITE campaign, and how we can assist

you as you consider what your legacy will be.” “It all starts with a single spark,” Valentino said. “I have seen how one gift inspires another and another and before you know it, momentum builds and transformational change occurs. “Be that spark,” he said. “Illuminate the pathway for learning and discovery, for access and outcomes. Let us gain your confidence, share your passion, steward your resources, and create meaningful and lasting partnerships.” At the culmination of IGNITE, the College and the University will be different and better institutions. “Legacy gifts and endowment have fortified other institutions of higher learning,” Valentino concluded. “UIC is where your investment in the future should be. With your support, we will become the premier, urban research University for the City of Chicago—solving the issues of today and anticipating the challenges of tomorrow.” “With your passion and UIC’s mission, we will together embark on a transformative journey—and it all starts with a single spark,” Dr. Stanford concluded. for Special IGNITE Campaign Gift to Create New Postgraduate Periodontics Resident Room; Others Support Important Effort.
The long-term impact of private giving and the appreciation of recipients was on display on February 15 when more than 30 alumni, faculty, residents, and staff of the Department of Periodontics joined with Dean Clark Stanford and other College administrators at a special dedication ceremony. A significant gift from Dr. Martin L. Kolinski and Dr. Tricia R. Crosby has allowed the College to create a new Postgraduate Periodontics Resident Room which
has been named in their honor. Several other alumni and friends of the program also made generous donations to help furnish the room and assisted in the renovation of the Periodontics Clinic as well. These special donors came forward during the quiet phase of IGNITE: The Campaign for UIC, which was made public last October. Both Drs. Kolinski and Crosby are alumni of the College. Dr. Kolinski earned his DDS in 1978 and his
Certificate in Periodontics in 1980. Dr. Crosby earned her DDS in 2004 and her Certificate in Periodontics (she was Chief Resident) and her MS in Oral Biology in 2007. They practice together in St. Charles, IL, and are among the leading implant specialists in Illinois. They also serve as adjunct faculty members at the College in Periodontics. “The College community will be forever grateful to Dr. Kolinski and

Department of Endodontics Establishes first
Endowed Professorship Named for Dr. Franklin S. Weine
Donors are Dr. Ronald Milnarik and Pauline Milnarik A significant IGNITE campaign gift from Dr. Ronald Milnarik, ’67, Loyola Endodontics ’75, Clinical Assistant Professor, Endodontics, and his wife, Pauline, has established the first endowed professorship in the Department of Endodontics: The Franklin S. Weine Endowed Professorship in Endodontics. The Milnariks named the professorship for the late Dr. Franklin S. Weine, ’57, who was a faculty member admired by his students at three highly respected educational institutions: the UIC College of Dentistry, Loyola University Chicago School of Dentistry, and Osaka Dental University, Japan. Dr. Weine was one of Dr. Milnarik’s teachers, and Dr. Milnarik also considered him a mentor, colleague, and friend. Endowed professorships allow the University to recruit and retain promising teachers and researchers from around the world and encourage them to innovate and expand their careers at UIC. “We decided to provide this gift because we wanted to support my dental school, to honor Dr. Weine, and to further bring together UIC and Loyola alumni, since Dr. Weine and I had ties to both schools,” Dr. Milnarik explained. “We were both alumni of UIC, he taught at Loyola for 23 years before coming back to UIC to teach, and I was one of his endodontics students at Loyola. “Dr. Weine was head of graduate endodontics at Loyola and our main endodontic teacher, but most
importantly, he was our inspiration,” Dr. Milnarik said. “He was a great mentor for all the graduate students in endodontics. I thought an endowed professorship would be a wonderful way to honor him.” “Dr. and Mrs. Milnarik’s gift will drive innovations in Endodontics and honors both the mentorship of Dr. Weine and the expertise of our Department of Endodontics today, and is visionary for helping endodontics for the future,” said Dean Clark Stanford. “The gift creates a legacy that will be impactful across the College and shows the leadership, humility, value, and vision of Dr. Milnarik.” Endodontics Department Head Dr. Bradford Johnson, Endodontics ’91, MPH ’05, is grateful to the Milnariks for the department’s first endowed professorship. “The creation of an endowed professorship will greatly enhance the visibility and stature of our department at all levels—College of Dentistry, UIC, and nationally/internationally,” he said. “An endowed professorship creates a lasting legacy and grows with time,” Dr. Johnson continued. “In addition to the prestige attached to an endowed professorship, the endowed position will be a valuable incentive for recruitment and retention of future endodontics faculty. Funds generated by the endowed position will be used to support faculty and resident research and other scholarly activities in the Department of Endodontics.”
Dr. Franklin S. Weine, ’57, speaking at Reunion 2006 after he was presented with the College’s Distinguished Dental Alumnus Award. “An endowed professorship in my field of endodontics is an enduring, lasting way to support the College,” Dr. Milnarik explained. “I have a propensity for planning ahead, and my hope is that it will give the Department of Endodontics a boost and more flexibility in attracting and retaining great new faculty, now and long into the future. “An endowed professorship is a way to not only perpetuate Dr. Weine’s memory, but to inspire others to aspire to be as great a teacher as he was,” Dr. Milnarik noted. “He was a passionate teacher who used practical cases to illustrate points. He had a whole series of favorite cases that provided examples that his students will never forget, and I’ve followed his method in teaching our students here.” This also is the College’s first endowed professorship established during the IGNITE campaign. Periodontics Resident Room Named continued from page 12 Dr. Crosby for their generous gift to create this state-of-the-science facility,” said Dean Clark Stanford at the dedication. “This Resident Room is a key factor in our efforts to renovate the space dedicated to the Department of Periodontics.” Dean Stanford acknowledged several others who contributed to the Resident Room and Postgraduate Clinic. Four members of the Periodontics Class of 1981 made gifts to name a resident workstation. They are Drs. Andrew W. Browar, James D. Kassolis, Timothy P. Walsh, and Michele Zmick-Garfield. Dr. Alan L. Naming a surgical operatory was Dr. Thomas Braun, ’85, MS ’88, and his wife Maria. Also naming a surgical operatory were members of the Towns family, Dr. Stephen B. Towns, ’73, Dr. Jeanette Holloway, Dr. Clarence Towns Jr., ’45, Endodontics ’65, MS ’75, and Dr. Eleanor Towns. “I want to thank Dr. Kolinski, Dr. Crosby, and all of our donors from the bottom of my heart for your generosity during the IGNITE campaign, and for your belief in the
important role that the Department of Periodontics and the UIC College of Dentistry play in Changing the Future of Oral Health,” Dean Stanford said. Department Head Dr. Sal Nares spoke next, noting that, “Through the generous support of Dr. Kolinski and Dr. Crosby, we have been able to create a new resident space complete with new technology, teaching assistance, and furnishings. “The room is away from the patient environment for the first time, providing privacy. It is a place conducive to learning, where residents and faculty can bond and consult with each other in a forum for open discussion, lecture, and literature reviews,” Dr. Nares said. “It is a place where residents can study complex cases in a spacious, comfortable, and collaborative environment.” Third-year resident Dr. Taylor

IGNITE Kick-Off Newman shared some heartfelt words on the impact of the new space for her and her fellow residents, noting that the new Resident Room “was literally the talk of the school. When residents from other departments came in to discuss cases, their jaws dropped, and they couldn’t stop saying how incredible the room is. Beaming with pride, we felt lucky to work in such a beautiful space.” She noted that watching her co-residents make the space into a home by bringing in a bonsai tree, coasters, candles, and decorations was “one of the best aspects of this change. Everyone added their own flair, bringing a personal touch that was inspired by this renovation. In a way it let us be individuals, but at the same time brought us closer as a group. “Life as a resident can be challenging, but knowing that we begin and end our day walking into a room that was made specifically for us, that caters to the needs of residents and the department, boosts the morale and lessens the load a bit,” Dr. Newman said. “To know we are supported by the alumni means more than we can explain,” she added. “We are so grateful for the generosity that allowed this room to become possible, and for the mentorship and dedication to our education that the alumni have shown.” Drs. Kolinski and Crosby came up to speak next, with Dr. Kolinski leading off by joking that he “never wanted to donate to a place that would have me as a speaker.” But he became serious when he noted that “when I was growing up I didn’t have

much, so it is an honor to be able to make a donation like this.” Dr. Crosby noted that she started at the College in the hygiene program in 1996 and went on to earn a BS, DDS, certificate in Periodontics, and MS in Oral Biology, “spending 11 straight years here as a student—some of the hardest and most rewarding times of my life. “My experience here was second to none,” she continued. “For example, in 2004 we began routinely using CT imaging for all implant
treatment plans. At this time we also began the routine use of Simplant software, which allowed us to embrace this prosthetically directed implant treatment philosophy. It was an example of how collaborative accountability opened the door for a new relationship with the Prosthodontics Department. This technology jump-started the learning in the PG Perio program to a high level. “Periodontics means everything to me,” Dr. Crosby said, “and I want to thank the department for my education and introducing me to Marty. “We strive every day to contribute to the good of our community, and we are honored to give back to the College,” Dr. Crosby said. Dr. Kolinski agreed, and noted that he and Dr. Crosby not only have fun practicing, “but I didn’t know I was getting one of the best residents ever when she joined my practice. When you realize the person you are mentoring is better than you, you realize you are truly lucky.” Drs. Kolinski, Crosby, Nares, and Stanford then cut the ribbon on the new Dr. Martin L. Kolinski and Dr. Tricia R. Crosby Resident Room. The entourage then took a tour of the facility led by Program Director Dr. E. Dwayne Karateew, who noted that, “the Resident Room is a source of energy for the program. It exemplifies resident life, and it could not have been created without Dr. Crosby, Dr. Kolinski, and the benefactors from the Class of 1981, and Dr. Rosenfeld, as well as Dr. Maggio and others who contributed to our clinic.

IGNITE Kick-Off Endowed Professorship Named for Dr. Weine “I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this truly wonderful place,” he concluded. “It makes us strong and gives us a joie de vivre.” A reception followed, during which time Dr. Rosenfeld noted that the event created “a moment which will forever connect, past, present, and future periodontics at UIC. The opportunity to give back is priceless and rewarding, especially when donors show humility and are humbled by the opportunity.” He said that Drs. Crosby and Kolinski “set a wonderful, heartfelt, sincere tone which will serve as a teachable moment for our residents as they begin their life journey. Taylor Newman’s remarks hit the perfect tone and showed the residents’ appreciation. The emerging vision of Drs. Stanford and Nares was on display. “Meaningful incremental change takes time, and the stewards are worthy of our continued support and confidence,” Dr. Rosenfeld concluded. Opportunities exist for alumni and friends to name surgical operatories in the new Department of Periodontics Postgraduate Clinic, as well as resident workstations in the Dr. Martin L. Kolinski and Dr. Tricia R. Crosby Postgraduate Periodontics Resident Room. To create a legacy gift and contribute to the Department of Periodontics during the IGNITE campaign, contact Director of Development Bruno Mancari at (312) 413-3554 or bmancari@uic.edu.

faculty excellence through endowed professorships and endowed chairs is one of the five key areas the College is focusing on during IGNITE. “We are extremely grateful to receive this unique gift from Dr. and Mrs. Milnarik as its impact on the Department of Endodontics will be felt for generations,” said Associate Dean for Advancement Mark J. Valentino. “Their support also provides us with great momentum as we begin the public phase of the IGNITE campaign. To have an alumnus and faculty member make such a leadership gift should inspire others to partner with us in similar ways. With the combined support of our many alumni and friends, this truly
can be a transformational campaign like no other for the College of Dentistry,” he continued. “I’d also like to recognize the important work that Director of Development Bruno Mancari provided in this effort. Building relationships with our donors that make it both comfortable and enjoyable to support our critical initiatives is what we aspire to do within the Office of Advancement,” added Valentino. For 23 years, Dr. Weine was Professor and Director of Graduate Endodontics at the Loyola University Chicago School of Dentistry. At his passing in 2012, he held the rank of Professor Emeritus at Loyola’s Medical Center, Adjunct Professor in

the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry’s Department of Endodontics, and Visiting Professor of Endodontics at Osaka Dental University in Japan. His textbook, Endodontic Therapy, was published in seven languages. “Dr. Weine has almost universal name recognition in the endodontic community and among the many thousands of general dentists who trained using his classic textbook in the 1970s through the 1990s and beyond,” Dr. Johnson said. Dr. Weine earned his DDS from the UIC College of Dentistry in 1957, and his MSD and Certificate in Endodontics from Indiana University in 1966. He earned the UIC College of Dentistry’s highest honor, the Distinguished Dental Alumnus Award, in 2005. The surgical suite in the Postgraduate Endodontics Clinic also bears Dr. Weine’s name. In addition to his writing, lecturing, and teaching, Dr. Weine kept a part-time clinical practice specializing in Endodontics in downtown Chicago for four decades. “The incredibly generous gift that Dr. Milnarik and his wife, Pauline, provided is even more remarkable considering that they chose to name it after Dr. Milnarik’s mentor, Dr. Weine, instead of themselves,” Dr. Johnson concluded. “I am deeply grateful for the Milnariks’ gift and want them to know they have created a legacy that will endure for the benefit of future generations of endodontists and dentists.”

Dr. Ron Milnarik and his wife, Pauline, presenting the 2013 Dr. Marshall W. Milnarik Scholarship to Dr. Nisha Mehta, ’13. “It makes me feel fantastic to recognize and honor Dr. Weine this way,” Dr. Milnarik said. “If others were also to contribute to the professorship, additional donations from all those who were inspired by Dr. Weine would be most welcome.” Several years ago, Dr. Milnarik established the Dr. Marshall W. Milnarik Scholarship at the College. Named for his father, a Loyola Dental School alumnus, the scholarship is awarded annually to a third-year
student in honor of clinical and academic excellence, along with interest, leadership, and enthusiasm for the profession. Arcolian Dental Arts Society Provides Support The Arcolian Dental Arts Society was generous to the College at its Christmas Dinner Dance at the Park Ridge Country Club on Dec. 1. Arcolian Dr. Frank Maggio, Clinical Assistant Professor, Periodontics, and Arcolian President Dr. Stephen Esposito, presented Dean Clark Stanford with a check
The society also presented a scholarship for $2,000 to D-3 Andrew Bertagna. “I am very proud of both my Italian heritage and my career choice,” Bertagna said. “So, being recognized by a dental society composed of Italian-Americans is a great honor that I will always cherish.”
Arcolian of the Year Dr. Frank Maggio and Arcolian President Dr. Stephen Esposito presented Dean Clark Stanford with a check for $1,000 to support the College. for $1,000 to support the College’s Service Learning Fund and A.C.E. (Achievement, Commitment, and Empowerment) Scholarship Fund during the IGNITE campaign. The donation was requested by Dr. Maggio as part of his being named Arcolian of the Year.

He plans to use the money to support his research-related endeavors. Bertagna expressed his gratitude to all the members and executive board of the society “for seeing potential in me and recognizing it with an award.”
He noted that, “when Italian immigrants first came to America, they operated in a close network, relying on their fellow immigrants for support and friendship. The Arcolians and organizations like theirs re-establish this old dynamic within a professional society by bringing together individuals of similar heritages, allowing for relationships between individuals of similar heritage to be established and flourish even in our modern, diversified society. “These organizations recognize intrinsic commonalities amongst dental professionals, as well as provide a neutral and causal form for neophytes within the profession to meet and establish relationships with and learn from older, more prominent members,” Bertagna said. “These societies also provide an opportunity for peers to remain in contact with each other long after graduation.” The Arcolian of the Year Award “recognizes my work as a periodontist, as a faculty member and Alumni Board Director at the UIC College of Dentistry, as an active member of organized dentistry, and as a person of Italian-American heritage,” Dr. Maggio said. “I am proud and humbled that the society chose to honor me. “I also am proud of the close relationship between the Arcolians and the College,” he continued. “Dean Stanford and the faculty, staff, and students of the College understand the importance of the good works provided by the Arcolians, and the Arcolians understand that the future of the oral health profession is being created at UIC.”

Dean’s Council Members Enjoy Architecture Tour The College of Dentistry on Oct. 1 sponsored a Chicago River-based Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) Tour of the Chicago skyline and a reception on the riverbank for members of the UIC Dean’s Council. Members of the Dean’s Council are those who have contributed $1,000 or more to the College. “The day was beautiful and we had more than 70 Dean’s Council members attend this wonderful event,” said Dean Clark Stanford. The tour explored “some incredible Chicago history along the river,” said Dr. Manal Ibrahim, ’93, Prosthodontics ’96, who attended with her husband, Dr. Anthony LaVacca. “We had a wonderful time and the weather cooperated with us.” “My wife, Alisa, and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves that afternoon,” said Dr. Paul Burkey, Loyola ’83, MS Ortho University of Iowa ’85. “The
CAF guide was very knowledgeable and informative. We have cruised on different architectural river tours, but this was our favorite trip yet.” “There were many alumni and others on the cruise, and we got to spend a lot of time socializing and enjoying new friends,” Dr. LaVacca said. “There was a reception along the river immediately following the cruise, and most of the alumni stayed and enjoyed some more time together. I love this aspect of being connected to the UIC College of Dentistry.” Dr. Burkey enjoyed the social aspect, too. He noted that as a Loyola alumnus, “it has been awesome to be so warmly received by UIC. As a dental ‘orphan’ following the closure of Loyola, it is great to be adopted into the UIC family.” That family camaraderie is one reason, Dr. Ibrahim said, “why it is so important to show financial support for the College. As an alumna, it’s a small way of giving back for the incredible personal and professional experiences we all gained during our time in dental school.” “I think it is very important for us who have had the privilege of receiving a dental education to be supportive of the great things that are occurring on Paulina Street,” Dr. Burkey concluded. “Staying involved
Dr. Manal Ibrahim and Dr. Anthony LaVacca. by contributing, time, knowledge and resources allows the next generation of dentists to benefit as we have.” The previous year, the College sponsored a Dean’s Council tour of the Art Institute of Chicago. Other cultural activities for Dean’s Council members are being considered for the future. For more information on how you can become a Dean’s Council member, contact Ana Lisa Ogbac at aogbac1@uic.edu or (312) 9960485.

University Honors Dr. Daniel Laskin Dr. Daniel M. Laskin, MS Oral Surgery ’52, along with two other outstanding UIC alumni, were honored by the University during the UIC Alumni Awards Luncheon on Sept. 28. Dr. Laskin was honored with the Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Howard Kaufman (BA ’82, Liberal Arts and Sciences) and Jean Ragalie-Carr (BS ’83, Applied Health Sciences) received the Alumni Achievement Award. Dr. Laskin is a world-renowned researcher in the field of craniofacial growth, temporomandibular joint problems, and connective tissue physiology and pathology. He was one of the founders along with Dr. Bernard G. Sarnat, ’40, MS Histology ’40, of the modern Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the College and served as Department Head, and he helped the department achieve international acclaim. “I always loved the challenge of working with oral and maxillofacial residents — and watching them grow into competent professionals,” Dr. Laskin said. Dr. Laskin recently made a generous gift to create the Dr. Daniel M. Laskin Faculty Fund in the Department of Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgery as a precursor to an endowed professorship named for Dr. Laskin in the department. The College is actively seeking additional donations for the current Laskin Faculty Fund so that it can enhance the value, and the impact, of the future Dr. Daniel M. Laskin Endowed Professorship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The department also hosts an annual lecture named for Dr. Laskin. For more information about this year’s Laskin lecture, see page 66. Dr. Kaufman is a leader in cancer immunology and a world-renowned melanoma specialist. He developed two Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs to treat cancer and serves as the president of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer. OMDS has New Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain Clinic The Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences (OMDS) has expanded the scope of its Oral Medicine Clinic, which now is the Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain Clinic. Dr. Harvey Wigdor, ’76, MS Oral Pathology ’84, Professor, OMDS, is Chief of the new clinic, which is located on the first floor of the College. “It’s not just a name change,” Dr. Wigdor explained. “It’s a significant difference. We have been treating Orofacial Pain in patients. But now that we’ve brought on Dr. Jasjot Sahni, who was trained at USC in an Orofacial Pain/Oral Medicine residency, her presence makes a tremendous difference in treating

unusual and unique Orofacial Pain patients.” Dr. Sahni is a Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor. “I deal with Chronic Orofacial Pain including mainly TMD and neuropathic pain, on a daily basis,” she explained. “I’m also trained in Dental Sleep Medicine and Oral Medicine.” Dr. Sahni also diagnoses and treats lesions, headaches, neuropathic pain, trigeminal neuropathy and neuralgia, myofascial pain, muscle pain, joint issues, temporomandibular disorders (TMD), burning mouth syndrome, dry mouth, bruxism, halitosis, and sleep disorders caused by craniofacial issues. Dr. Wigdor also noted that Dr. Beth Miloro, Clinical Assistant Professor, OMDS, also is a key faculty member in the Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain Clinic.
“This clinic can only be successful with outstanding clinicians such as Dr. Miloro, Dr. Sahni, and others,” he said. Besides an increased emphasis on treating Orofacial Pain, Dr. Wigdor noted that the new clinic will “provide the dental students with more of an understanding of the medical model—how to take a good health history,” he said. “When you read the literature on physical diagnosis, many practitioners believe that 80% of performing a correct diagnosis is attained through proper health histories.” Collaboration is another emphasis at the new clinic. “We had a patient suffering from Crohn’s disease who was developing oral ulcers,” Dr. Wigdor explained. “Oral ulcers are not uncommon with patients who present with Crohn’s or irritable bowel syndrome, but

News dentists and gastroenterologists may not always be familiar with this. That’s an example of why they should collaborate and why taking a good health history is crucial.” He also said that the clinic is developing a closer collaboration with the Department of Dermatology at UI Health. “A lot of what we treat are dermatologic lesions,” Dr. Wigdor explained. “There are times we need to lean on a dermatologist to help us out because there are a lot of medicines available for dermatologic lesions that they work with much more commonly than we do.” Dr. Wigdor also thanked Dr. Richard Monahan, Head of OMDS, for naming him Chief of the new Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain Clinic. The Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain Clinic also welcomes outside referrals. To contact the Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain Clinic, call (312) 3551222 or email oralmedicine@uic.edu.
Noorullah, Clinical Community Academic Manager. “The goal of the grant is to have our students become comfortable treating kids five years old and under, so upon graduation they will be more likely to treat such children in their offices,” Noorullah added. “This funding is intended to give students experience in treating this age group, and it also is in this group that we can begin to dissect the risk factors that lead to early childhood caries,” said Dr. Caswell Evans, Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health Sciences. There will be three sites available, with D-3s going to two and AS-3s going to one.
“All of the students in those classes will go,” Noorullah said. At the Douglas County Health Department, they will serve a rural and Amish population. At the DuPage County Health Department, they will serve special needs patients. At the Englewood Neighborhood Health Center Woman, Infants, and Children Clinic on 63rd Street, they will perform screenings on young children and provide education to parents. The HRSA grant also funds community-based experiences for students in all of their years in dental school. For DMD students, “In the D-1 year, the students go to the Chicago

Advanced Prosthodontics Program Places Two Alums, One Resident Among of Six Finalists in National Competition The College’s Department of Restorative Dentistry’s Advanced Prosthodontic Program was recognized with three finalists in the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) John J. Sharry Research Award Competition. Dr. Ghaith Darwish, ’14, Prosthodontics ’17, earned second place in the competition for his research, “Improving Polymethyl Methacrylate Resin Using Novel Nana-Ceramic Coating.” The other two finalists were third-year Advanced Prosthodontics Resident Dr. Saad AlResayes, honored for his research, “Corrosion Behavior of Ti 15Zr Dental Implant Alloy Compared to CpTi and Ti 6Al 4V Alloys,” and Dr. Randold Binns, Prosthodontics ’17, honored for

his research, “Effect of Ultraviolet Radiation on Candida albicans Biofilm on Polymethyl Metharylate Resin.” Sponsored by the ACP Education Foundation, the John J. Sharry Prosthodontic Research Competition is held to stimulate and acknowledge original research in prosthodontics by residents. The 2017 Sharry Research Competition was held during the Annual Session of the American College of Prosthodontists in San Francisco, Nov. 1 through 4. This highly competitive award requires eligible individuals to submit an abstract of their research. The Sharry Research Award Committee then identifies up to 12 individuals for submission of a complete manuscript for consideration. From these manuscripts, six finalists are identified to present as part of the final competition at the ACP Annual Session. “As part of an incredibly
impressive showing, the UIC Advanced Prosthodontic Program made up three of the six finalists for the 2017 award competition,” said Dr. Stephen Campbell, Head, Restorative Dentistry. The College’s Advanced Prosthodontics residents have scored impressive showings in the Sharry competition for several years. In 2014, Dr. Aram Kim, Prosthodontics and MS Oral Sciences ’14, won first place. In the 2015 competition, Dr. Amy Au, Prosthodontics and MS Oral Sciences ’15, finished second. The 2016 competition saw the Advanced Prosthodontics place three finalists: Dr. Craig Sikora, Prosthodontics and MS Oral Sciences ’16, won first place; Dr. Virginia Hogsett, Prosthodontics and MS Oral Sciences ’16, won second place, and Dr. Alec Zurek, ’13, Prosthodontics and MS Oral Sciences ’16, was a finalist. Drs. Brad Johnson, Kent Knoernschild Strengthen College’s Relationship with China The College’s relationship with China has become even stronger thanks to a visit there by Dr. Brad Johnson, Endodontics ’91, MHPE ’05, Head and Director of Postdoctoral Endodontics, and Dr. Kent Knoernschild, Professor, Restorative Dentistry, and Director of the Advanced Specialty Program in Prosthodontics. The two presented at the Peking Union Medical College and Hospital Multidisciplinary Forum for Dentistry in Beijing for about a week in November. Dr. Lin Tao, Professor, Oral Biology, was the original connection who brought several visiting scholars from Peking Union to the UIC College of Dentistry in 2016. The Chinese school in return extended an invitation to the College to send some of its scholars to China, and Drs. Johnson and Knoernschild took them up on the offer. Peking Union paid all expenses. The official
sponsor was Professor Jizhi Zhao, Head of Dentistry there. Dr. Johnson presented on Regenerative Endodontics, and on Endodontic Microsurgery: Impact of New Materials and Technology on Outcomes, also performing an endodontic microsurgical procedure on a model. Dr. Knoernschild presented on Optimizing Outcomes: Dental Implant Patient Diagnosis and Treatment Planning for Single and Multiple Units, and Diagnosis, Virtual Planning, Guided Surgery, and the Prosthodontic Reconstruction. They received good advice on what to expect in China from College faculty who have been there—Dr. Tao; Dean Clark Stanford; Dr. Christine Wu, Professor, Pediatric Dentistry; and Dr. Qian Xie, Assistant Professor, Endodontics. “I emailed Dr. Xie twice while in Beijing for advice,” Dr. Johnson noted. Peking Union is one of the most

prestigious hospital/medical schools in China, “so the technology and facilities were similar in many ways to what you would find in this country,” Dr. Johnson said. “Their best teaching hospitals are well-equipped.” “Dental implants are just beginning to gain popularity there as a care modality, so it’s important to do whatever is possible to retain teeth using endo,” Dr. Knoernschild explained. “In their 20-chair dental clinic, nearly half the chairs are reserved for endo. Patients make appointments, check in, and review their test results at terminals that look much like ATMs.” He noted that the Peking Union hosts specifically asked Dr. Knoernschild to speak about implants “to grow their ability to provide that approach to care.” “I feel that Dr. Knoernschild and I both made solid connections with our hosts and opened up the possibility of even more future scholarly

exchanges between UIC and Peking Union,” Dr. Johnson said, noting that the Chinese school’s faculty now “have a better idea of what we do here. I was able to include some of the research done in our department in my presentation, which was primarily clinical.” “They seem serious about growing an educational and academic exchange relationship between our two institutions,” Dr. Knoernschild noted. “They are thinking of longer programs for the future, and one of the coordinating doctors said she looked forward to see us in either America or China again. “As speakers, we gave visibility to UIC as a leading and innovative academic, clinical, and research institution,” Dr. Knoernschild said. Dr. Johnson was very complimentary of “the attention and generosity of our hosts,” he said. “They really took care of everything.” Dr. Knoernschild agreed. “Dr. Johnson and I mutually said we were having lessons in hospitality— such respect, attention to detail, kindness, friendliness, and warmth.” The duo also experienced Beijing and nearby areas. “It’s interesting to see how they have preserved a lot that represents China’s ancient history while at the same time developing a densely populated, modern city of more than 20 million people with buildings, stores, and roads that look similar to those of a typical U.S. city,” Dr. Johnson said. “It was a little surprising that many signs were in Mandarin and English.” “China is such an incredible mix of ultra-new with ancient,” Dr. Knoernschild said. “State-of-theart technology superimposed on

thousands of years of culture.” Traffic in Beijing “was much worse than Chicago,” Dr. Johnson said. “People, bicycles, scooters, cars all crowding the streets,” Dr. Knoernschild said. “Pedestrians do not have the right of way. Shoulders on the freeway were often just another lane, with many on the shoulder driving the speed limit. Wow!” During their visit, the weather was exceptionally clear. “Everyone there commented on how lucky we were to be able to see the city this way, as Beijing has the reputation for incredible and terrible smog,” Dr. Knoernschild said. They visited the tourist sites— the Forbidden City (the old imperial palace), hutongs (older preserved neighborhoods), the Great Wall of China, temples and palaces, markets “where hard bargaining over price was expected and encouraged,” Dr. Johnson said, and restaurants. “Saying the food was great was an understatement,” Dr. Knoernschild said. “Chinese food in Beijing is incredible. But the first thing you see walking up the mountain to the Great Wall is a Burger King. We didn’t stop.” Dr. Wei Wong, who had visited the College in 2016, joined Drs. Johnson and Knoernschild on the Great Wall, walking more than two miles with them up and down steep hills and stairs. “The next day he went to work at Peking Union and told the doctors his legs were broken—I think he thought we were crazy,” Dr. Knoernschild said. “He said Chinese people walk to the top of the wall, look at the view, and say ‘beautiful,’ and go back. We Americans had to take the long walk.” The two thanked Professor Zhao,
and Associate Professor Li Qian, and Drs. Wong, Wang, He, Ho, and Ge of Peking Union “for a wonderful and well-coordinated visit,” Dr. Knoernschild concluded.
Give Kids a Smile Day a Success About 50 students from St. Malachy School visited the College of Dentistry Feb. 8 for its Give Kids a Smile Day. The annual event brings together students and faculty from the College with school children to promote oral health education and provide free preventive exams to underserved communities. “If kids understand the basics about brushing, flossing, and healthy diets, they are more likely to prevent cavities, early loss of teeth, and gum disease — things that can cause pain and school absenteeism in the short term and cost money in

The St. Malachy students, who are in kindergarten, second, and sixth grades, rotated between educational presentations, activity stations, and preventive exams. Karen Homsi, a third-year dental student in a pediatric clinical rotation, is one of 12 students who helped provide preventive care — cleanings and fluoride treatments — to youngsters during Give Kids a Smile Day. “I have something that can help you,” Homsi said to a St. Malachy
kindergarten student during a cleaning. “Remember the ‘Rules of Twos.’ Brush two times a day, for two minutes. Side to side, and don’t forget your tongue!” Homsi said each child is different. “Some ask a lot of questions and some sit quietly until the exam is over, but I think they are all having fun because they are here with their friends and doing
things that don’t normally happen at the dentist,” she said. Sue Jolie, a kindergarten teacher from St. Malachy, said keeping things fun is what keeps her students interested. “Yes, they are learning about dental health, but they are also getting their face painted — that gets them excited,” Jolie said, “and they get a kick out of interacting with the dentistry students, who are younger and more relatable than most dentists they’ve known.” A fourth-year dentistry student known to the St. Malachy students as “Mr. Molar” entertained kids by dressing up as a tooth and carrying a novelty-sized toothbrush while teaching them about good brushing habits. “We’re here to make it fun so that they are more likely to remember what they learned,” said Moein Azimi, aka Mr. Molar. Azimi, who lived in Iran until the age of 17, said he has seen firsthand what happens when preventive health is not a priority and dental care is “seen only as a luxury.”

Dean Clark Stanford had fun visiting with Clark the mascot, as they both have the same name. This is the 16th year the College of Dentistry has hosted Give Kids a Smile Day, a program of the American Dental Association Foundation that launched nationally in 2003 as a way for dentists to join with others in the community to provide dental services to underserved children.

Research Dr. Patrick Smith Earns AAPHD Grant Dr. Patrick Smith, Clinical Assistant Professor, Division of Prevention and Public Health Sciences and the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, has earned a grant from the American Association of Public Health Dentistry Foundation for his proposal, “Understanding community engagement in low-income, predominantly Black communities to
promote oral health.” The grant is to develop a service initiative/research project based on three questions: Considering there are significant health disparities within low-income Black communities, are waiting for a dentist, or waiting for better Medicaid reimbursement, the only strategies? How can we help communities develop their own sustainable oral health programs and systems? What are the challenges of engaging low-income Black communities with an understanding that there is an element of concentrated, urban poverty that may exist? “To do this, we want to develop and promote an oral health program with a community-based organization or school,” Dr. Smith explained. “In the process, we plan to interview and have focus group sessions with community leaders, health workers, and other individuals from the community to hear their perspectives about the best ways to include them in sustainable oral health initiatives. The thinking is geared more towards empowering and supporting community members as they carry out their own initiatives, rather than being the sole persons delivering the initiatives.” Dr. Smith hopes to gain tools the College can use to build more programs and support policy for low-income Black communities in an effort to reduce disparities. “The themes I have in mind are centered around oral health literacy and service delivery,” Dr. Smith said. “How are oral health messages and services delivered and received?” To execute the project, Dr. Smith is in discussion with the UIC Office of Community Engagement and Neighborhood Health Partnerships to identify partners for collaboration, and he also is communicating with local high schools regarding curriculum development for oral health. He hopes to bring volunteer dental students from the College and predental students from UIC into the project. The grant is for $5,000 for one year. Dr. Smith was recognized at the AAPHD Business Meeting at the National Oral Health Conference on April 15 in Louisville, KY, for his proposal.

President’s Message Positive Accomplishments Spark IGNITE Campaign Dear Alumni and Friends: Dean Clark Stanford does an email newsletter called Smile of the Week. Each week he sends this to the College of Dentistry faculty, students, residents, staff, administration, and Alumni Board members to recognize outstanding service, events, accomplishments, or milestones of the UIC College of Dentistry family. (Don’t worry, you’re not being shortchanged! The latest news about the College also can be found in Vision or the College’s website.) But I refer specifically to Smile of the Week because it is a great example of the amazing positive continued improvement here at the UIC College of Dentistry. Since joining the College in 2014, Dean Stanford has built on the accomplishments of previous Deans to make the UIC College of Dentistry one of the premier teaching, research, and patient care institutions for dentistry in the country. Additionally, he has been able to reverse the fiscal fortune of the College through department accountability and responsibility. In this positive environment, I have seen that there is a fire inside people at the College, a motivation to reach beyond its recent achievements to pursue new opportunities and to chase dreams. IGNITE: The Campaign for UIC will provide the means to do this, bringing together graduates of UIC’s, Loyola’s, and Northwestern’s dental programs, other members of the profession, and the College’s corporate and foundation partners, demonstrating daily the remarkable value of the College’s professional degrees and certificate training programs. The prestige and professional impact of our degrees and certificates are a reflection of a superior education, reinforced by the College’s ongoing commitment to evolving technology, emerging science, improving the curriculum, and engaging our communities to address oral health disparities in Chicago, throughout Illinois, and beyond. The College invites all of us to partner with it in this $37 million transformational campaign for the College. I am proud to already have been part of IGNITE, and I will continue to contribute to the College during the IGNITE campaign. I urge you to join the campaign with your own contributions. With our passion and UIC’s mission, we will together embark on a transformative journey for the College, and it all starts with a

The Rockford Historical Society published the talk in Nuggets of History. Norman Wahl, MS Northwestern ‘62, author of Who Was Who in Orthodontics and former instructor at University of California at Los Angeles, published a new book, The Golden Age of Orthodontics—Decline and Aftermath, which depicts how the orthodontic specialty, having enjoyed a post-World War II period of plenty, was beset with a combination of forces that threatened the specialty’s status quo. One of these, a drop in the birthrate, contributed to an increase in general practice orthodontics, straining interdental relationships. The book is available at Amazon.com and other venues.

Student Activities Students Receive White Coats A total of 122 students, 70 members of DMD Class of 2021 and 52 members of the DMD Advanced Standing Class of 2019, received their white coats, marking their eligibility to enter the patient care environment, on Sept. 22, 2017. Students begin seeing patients their first year under the College’s curriculum. The White Coat Ceremony is an annual tradition marking the matriculating class of students entering the dental profession. It celebrates the choice to pursue a life in service to the health of society. During the ceremony, College of Dentistry deans and faculty members cloak students in their first white coat as a symbol of the trust bestowed upon them to carry on the healing profession of dentistry. Dr. Toni Roucka, ’90, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, was master of ceremonies. She noted that “the first White Coat Ceremony was held in the fall of 2003, and now it is considered a rite of passage for each class.” Dean Clark Stanford spoke next, and said it was a “wonderful, joyous time for students, families, and spouses.” He told the students that the program they have embarked upon is designed not only to provide a dental education, but “to improve emotional intelligence as well—to allow you to put yourself in the place of the patient.” Quoting Plutarch, a biographer and essayist from ancient Greece, Dr. Stanford said, “A mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” Dr. Stanford asked the students “to reach out to your colleagues. Unlike in your previous schools, you are not in competition with your peers. You are in competition with yourself.” He talked about core values the students should keep in mind: respect of patient autonomy, justice, veracity, competence, integrity, professionalism, and compassion. “The white coat symbolizes the transition of a lay person into the
health professions,” Dr. Stanford said. “Never forget that we are here to provide the best in patient care.” Speakers from several dental organizations followed. The first was Dr. Susan Bordenave Bishop, President, Illinois State Dental Society (ISDS) Foundation, and USA Regent, 8th District, International College of Dentists (ICOD). “Congratulations,” she told the students. “This is a great day in a great school which provides a great education.” Dr. Bishop noted that the foundation sponsors educational events and programs, Clinic and Research Day awards, scholarships, and the Mission of Mercy, in which disadvantaged persons receive dental treatment, and to which “everyone here is invited,” she said. She noted that she also represents the ICOD USA Section, a Fellowship honor society for dentists committed to community service and humanitarian programs. “We help the College by providing some funding for the Guatemala rotation,” she said. Dr. Bishop concluded with the advice, “Always do what is best for the patient and you will always be a great dentist.” Dr. Muzammil Saeed, ’03, spoke next. He is President-Elect of the 51

Student Activities Illinois Academy of General Dentistry. An alumnus, he recalled that when he was a student at the College, “All I wanted to do was graduate and never look back. But when I do look back, I see it was a great time and I got a great education.” He offered what he called “simple advice: take small bites. Don’t try to do too much at once.” Dr. Saeed noted that “the profession of dentistry truly is a lifetime of learning and the AGD is here to help. “You will be faced with many ethical challenges,” he added. “Your moral principles will always help you make the right decision.” Dr. Saeed concluded, “Always stay hungry and always stay involved.” Dr. Kirk Noraian, President of the Illinois Section, American College of Dentists, told the students, “As President I humbly come before you as a colleague and friend to talk about excellence. “Entering the clinic is one of the most important times of your career,” he continued. “You will remember lessons learned there when you least expect it. “Strive for excellence every day; you will never tire of your chosen profession,” Dr. Noraian said. “There is a light at the end of the tunnel—even though sometimes you’ll think the power went out,” he continued. “But know that we left the light on for you. “Seek out mentors in school and after graduation, and pay it forward after graduation,” Dr. Noraian concluded. “May your white coat remind you to always do your best.” Dr. Phillip Fijal, Loyola ’86, was the final speaker from organized dentistry. At the time of the ceremony, he served as President of the
52
Chicago Dental Society. Although he graduated from the Loyola School of Dentistry, “I’m an adopted UIC alum,” he noted. The CDS, Dr. Fijal said, is “the largest component dental society in the country. On behalf of our 7,000 members, I’d like to congratulate you for reaching this milestone.” Dr. Fijal recalled that when he was in school, classroom work preceded clinical work, and “when it was finally time to make it to the clinic, I was both nervous and excited. In the clinic, you will be taught patient care and you will quickly put it into practice. “Always remember, every patient is someone’s mother, father, brother, sister, son, or daughter,” he concluded. “Take care of them as if they were your own.” Students then received their white coats from College faculty. Their names were announced by Dr. Priscilla Chang, ’07, Clinical Associate Professor, Restorative Dentistry, and Dr. Adriana SemprumClavier, Clinical Director, Advanced Standing Program. Dr. Seema Ashrafi, ’93, MS Histology ’94, Periodontics ’99, Clinical Director, Advanced Standing Program, led the faculty recognition. Dr. Caswell Evans, Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health Sciences, led the students in the Dentist’s Pledge. Dr. Roucka presented pins and offered closing remarks. A reception for students, families, and faculty followed at the College. We invite you to become a 2018 UIC College of Dentistry White Coat Sponsor and contribute to the success and journey of the next generation of UIC dentists. Dr. Elizabeth Kaminsky Named an Albert Schweitzer Fellow
Periodontics Resident Dr. Elizabeth Kaminsky was named an Albert Schweitzer Fellow for the 2017-18 year. Dr. Kaminsky earned her fellowship through the Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows Program, a chapter of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, and through the Health & Medicine Policy Research Group, an independent policy center that conducts research, educates, and collaborates with other groups to advocate policies and impact health systems to improve the health status of all people. Schweitzer Fellows spend a year working to address barriers affecting the health of underserved communities and develop lifelong leadership skills. In doing so, they follow the example set by famed physician-humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer, for whom the fellowship is named. “The Schweitzer Fellowship program is an extraordinary opportunity for students and residents to engage in service
UIC
projects and set the stage for a service-oriented career,” said Dr. Caswell Evans, Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health Sciences. “Fellows understand the need to extend access to care and respond to the health challenges faced by the whole community. We are proud of the record of achievement by our Schweitzer Fellows. Elizabeth Kaminsky is continuing that record.” “I chose to apply for the Schweitzer Fellowship because I believe holistic care, interdisciplinary teamwork, and community outreach should be the foundation of dental medicine,” Dr. Kaminsky said. “Becoming a Schweitzer Fellow will help me reach these goals as a future dentist and healthcare provider.” She noted that her Schweitzer project “involves increasing dental education and access to dental care for an at-risk, underserved community on Chicago’s North Side.” Dr. Kaminsky is working at the Broadway Youth Center (BYC), a branch of Howard Brown Health. “BYC is a safe space for LGBTQ youth ages 12-to-24 who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability,” Dr. Kaminsky explained. BYC offers low-cost and free services such as medical, social, and mental health care along with resource advocacy (ID replacement, housing referrals, and food stamp and job application assistance), education opportunities (a GED program, tutoring, and scholarship assistance), and drop-in services (such as food, clothing, youthled programming, and leadership opportunities). “I am seeing youth for dental screenings and education sessions to
improve dental knowledge and help them access dental treatment at UIC,” Dr. Kaminsky said. “I hope to increase awareness about the importance of dental care as a component of the overall systemic health of the youths,” she continued. “I also hope to create a partnership between BYC and UIC so that a dental referral system will be in place for future years.” Dr. Kaminsky noted that she is working closely with her UIC Schweitzer mentor, Dr. Colin Haley, ’07, Clinical Assistant Professor, Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, to make the referral system possible. Dr. Kaminsky is one of two current Schweitzer Fellows at the College. The other is student Joseph Deek. Since the 2006-07 year, the College has had 16 students or

Faculty/Department News
Dr. Stephen Campbell and Dr. and Mrs. Ken Gehrke.
Faculty/Department
News Dr. Ken Gehrke Retires After Nearly 40 Years at College Dr. Ken Gehrke, ’82, Advanced Prosthodontics ’84, Clinical Associate Professor, Restorative Dentistry, retired from teaching at the College on Dec. 31. “I have been at the College since 1978, when I began as a D-1 in a class of 165 students,” he recalled. “Back then, we started on the fifth floor as D-1s, fourth as D-2s, third as D-3s, and second as D-4s. After completing all of our requirements, it was a short escalator ride out the front door—yes, we used to have escalators.” In 1984, Fixed Prosthodontics Department Head Dr. Valdemars Jekkals invited him to join the faculty. Dr. Gehrke taught at the College and

had a private practice until 1999, when he sold his practice to “devote my time entirely to the College,” which included participating in the Faculty Dental Practice. Dr. Gehrke is pleased by how relations between faculty and students have improved over the decades. “During my undergrad years, there was in many cases a less than collegial relationship between many faculty in their interactions with students,” he noted. “I have seen a constant movement away from this attitude to a much improved collegial atmosphere with faculty. The present environment is far more amicable, productive, and supportive than it was in my days as a student.” Dr. Alex Chan, ’78, Advanced Prosthodontics ’80, and the late Dr. Jim Buckman, ’64, served as role models and mentors for Dr. Gehrke, he said. “Their commitment to their teaching duties, their students, and their patients was amazing. I owe much to Dr. Buckman and Dr. Chan.” Another role model and mentor “beginning with my years in the undergraduate clinics and extending to the present day is Dr. Charles Luptak,” (Loyola ’68) Dr. Gehrke added. “Dr. Luptak supervised one of our first clinical experiences, our group complete denture patient with three students participating in the
treatment procedures. Dr. Luptak exhibited his skill, patience with our slow progress, and kindness and respect for the students and the patient throughout the entire process.” Dr. Gehrke expressed his gratitude to all of the Deans who have guided the College during his years—Deans Seymour Yale, ’45; Allen Anderson, ’64, Pediatric Dentistry ’65, MS ’66; Dale Eisenmann, ’65, PhD ‘68 (Interim), Bruce Graham, Bill Knight (Interim), and Clark Stanford. He also expressed his gratitude to Department Head Dr. Stephen Campbell. “He guided my introduction to and participation in national Prosthodontics organizations,” Dr. Gehrke said. “I am also very appreciative of Dr. Campbell’s guidance and support during my promotion process.” Recalling a fun memory, Dr. Gehrke noted that during a D-2 Prosthodontics course, “some students came up with a method of delaying the setting time of the rubber base that we were using for typodont final impressions—mixing the rubber base in an area of cooler ambient temperature. The cooler temperature in late fall could be found on the roof of the College. So off to the roof we went with rubber

UIC
Dr. Sath Allareddy Named Ortho Department Head Dr. Veersahtpurish (Sath) Allareddy will become Head of the College’s Department of Orthodontics on July 1. Dr. Allareddy was chosen following a national search by a committee led by Dr. Lyndon Cooper, Associate Dean for Research and Head of the Department of Oral Biology. “This is a proud moment in the College’s history,” said Dean Clark Stanford. “Dr. Allareddy has an incredibly strong history of scholarship and orthodontic teaching, especially concerning craniofacial anomalies.” Dean Stanford noted that Dr. Allareddy “brings a combination of academic rigor, clinical expertise, leadership, management, and business expertise that will be invaluable as a member of the senior leadership of the College." “In this era of genomics, I want the Orthodontics program to prepare our residents to excel in delivering multidisciplinary, personalized, and ‘precision Orthodontics’ care,” Dr. Allareddy said. “I am confident that the very accomplished Orthodontics team will provide a solid platform for our residents to excel. We want our residents to be life-long learners and leaders and to leave an imprint beyond Orthodontics.” Areas of research in which Dr. Allareddy is an expert include hospital quality of care, orthodontic clinical outcomes, cleft and craniofacial clinical outcomes, dental education, dental related outcomes in hospital based settings, the role of hospital procedure volume on surgical outcomes, and Class II Division I malocclusions. He has had ten grants funded during his career. “One of my interests would be to prepare the Department of Orthodontics to serve as an Oral and Craniofacial Clinical and Translational Research Center of Excellence,” Dr. Allareddy said. “As a first step, we are working with Dean Stanford
to recruit an outstanding ‘Big Data Analytics’ scientist. The goal is to drive innovation through translational research using ‘Big Data Analytics’ techniques. We want to position the UIC Department of Orthodontics at the forefront of research, teaching, clinical care, and service.” Most recently, he was Professor and Director of Clinical Research at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Allareddy also formerly taught at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA, where he was Director of Pre-Doctoral Orthodontics. Dr. Allareddy wanted to come to the College for several reasons. “Chicago is a melting pot of cultures and truly represents what America is,” Dr. Allareddy said. “Added to that, the historic UIC Orthodontics program is one of the oldest and largest programs in the country. Since 1931, close to 800 Orthodontists have graduated from the program, and several of them have gone on to become giants in the Orthodontics field.” Dr. Allareddy also noted that, “The core strength of the UIC Orthodontics program stems from its outstanding faculty members and residents.” He holds more than 20 honors and awards, including two Research Achievement Awards in 2018 from the Society of Critical Care Medicine. A reviewer or editorial board member with 30 journals, he also has been active in organized dentistry with both national and local societies, having served as President of the Iowa branch of the American Association of Dental Research. The co-author of the book Canine Exposure in Clinical Cases in Periodontology, Dr. Allareddy is the author or co-author of more than 160 journal articles and has made more than 225 presentations at regional, national, and international dental meetings. He also has directed seven graduate theses. Dr. Allareddy earned his BDS from Ragas Dental College in Chennai, India; his MBA from the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa; his MHA and PhD

from the College of Public Health at Iowa; and his MMSc in Oral Biology from Harvard. He also performed a residency in orthodontics at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and a fellowship in cleft and craniofacial orthodontics at Harvard and at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Allareddy is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He noted that when he applied for Orthodontic residency positions, “the UIC Orthodontics program was my top choice. I could not get into UIC, so I went to Harvard instead. Since then, I have been following the progress and accomplishments of the UIC Orthodontics program and when an opportunity presented to serve as the Department Head, I could not let this slip by.” His commitment to healthcare is a deeply personal one. Three months before he was to graduate from his Orthodontic residency, he was hospitalized in Boston with malaria and developed black water fever, which has a high mortality rate. So, he noted, “I want every patient of mine to experience the best possible care. This is my driving philosophy." Dr. Budi Kusnoto had been serving as Interim Head of Orthodontics, and will continue in the department as Professor and Orthodontics Program Director.

Case Study Comprehensive Diagnosis: The Fundamentals of Esthetic Implant Dentistry This case study comes from Dr. Lyndon Cooper, Associate Dean for Research and Head of the Department of Oral Biology. Sometimes we miss the forest for the trees. In the following treatment scenario, the initial presentation (Figure 1) masked important diagnostic features that would assure eventual esthetic success. Most importantly, these features guided a relatively simple approach to treatment. Noted is the presence of an ankylosed maxillary left central incisor. Given the history of trauma at age eight or nine, its location is not surprising. What is not necessarily obvious is the root resorption/agenesis, its relative buccal position in the arch, and – importantly – the unaffected health and position of the connective tissue attachments at the adjacent teeth. With good systemic and oral health, as well as a stable occlusion, replacement the maxillary left incisor was positively indicated. For many reasons, including the patient’s current enrollment in college away from home, a staged approach to implant placement and restoration was selected. The extraction was completed and healing was uneventful (Figure 2). After several months, the implant was placed by a one-stage procedure. A simple provisionalization scheme using an interim removable partial denture was provided for the duration of healing. After three months, a final implantlevel impression was made and a patient-specific zirconia abutment was made. Using the same impression and digital information, a lithium disilicate crown was designed, milled, and characterized using an in-office system. Following this nine-month period involving extraction, implant placement, and prosthetic management of the missing tooth, the abutment (Figure 3) was placed, Note the condition of the peri-implant mucosa is free of clinical signs of inflammation and its form is appropriate and symmetrical with the contralateral central incisor tooth. After etching and silane treatment, the crown was cemented to the abutment using a dual-cure, resin cement. The shallow location of the abutment (< 1mm) relative to the mucosal margin facilitated residual cement removal. The final crown at one week post-cementation demonstrates proper dimension, contour and color. Importantly, there is reasonable symmetry of the peri-implant mucosa demonstrated for the left and right central incisors (Figure 4). This treatment scenario illustrates how the decisions made regarding treatment can be guided by initial diagnostic information. Knowing the relative importance of the buccal bone volume, the dimension of existing keratinized tissue (estimated following extraction), and the location of the connective tissue contacts at the adjacent teeth, helped to identify a staged approach to treatment as one method of managing this scenario with minimal, yet, proper intervention.
