FALL 2020 | NUMBER 68

DEAN’S MESSAGE EXCELLENCE AT YOUR COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY OCCURS WITH A “BOW TIE” In this era of COVID, you may be asking why I’m talking about “BowTies?” Rest assured your College has taken multiple leadership steps to guide the College’s various educational, clinical and research roles over the past three months of the pandemic, building on excellence and aiding the Chicago Dental Society and the Illinois State Dental Society in their roles and missions in assisting the dental profession. The ability of the College to foster the best in education, collaborative spirit, and recognition acknowledges that the best occurs from a collaborative team, not an individual. This is the hallmark of how we build trust and accountability. Be it the best educational models (such as Small Group Learning), our state of the science clinics and simulation spaces, the amazing transformation to a hybrid learning space in spring 2020, and ongoing peer-to-peer mentorship; all represents the best that is UIC. We build our patient’s trust when we trust and know our students and faculty colleagues are performing at the top of their game, every day. Integrity derives from this bond of trust between a patient and the provider. Integrity occurs when the student provider embraces the ethics and values of the College and the American Dental Association. These ethical codes define us as a healing profession and we can only build integrity through trust. If we lose that trust, we lose integrity. Excellence in patient care outcomes, in turn, derives from the trust our patients have in the provider being up to date, knowledgeable and using the latest evidence-based practices for the trusted care of the patient. Through a reciprocal trust and integrity between the various members of the College,

4

we build excellence at multiple levels. Excellence in turn is what the College is and always will be known for. One cannot have excellence without integrity and one cannot have integrity without trust. This is how we “tie” the very best in patient care through Trust, Integrity and Excellence (or, TIE). Dentistry is now at an important moment with a set of changes in the patient care models that will move us forward. The profession and industry is changing with many new vendors, new products, new workflows and possibilities—many in response to the coronavirus. The desire for patients to come to our clinics and private practices following the COVID-19 pandemic will depend heavily on our ability to mitigate aerosols, create safe workflows, and enhance infection control protocols. Will they trust us? While we have had a strong blood-born infection strategy for years, the future will cause us to utilize best practices based on the weight of the evidence (BOW). Yes, we will have to “bow” to a new reality. As a profession grounded in science, we recognize the need to balance the evidence as we support the best for our patients. Going forward, the pronounced economic impact will alter the pace (or desires) of our patients’ abilities to return to a resemblance of normal. As our practices start to equilibrate to a new normal, we each will be impacted by the need to assure our patients we are prudent, insightful, and fully aware of where they are coming from. In this new future, we can document for them that each of us are at the top of the profession. This comes from an education at one of the best colleges of dentistry in the world—the UIC College of Dentistry. This is not because of where we were, but where we are going. Won’t you join us on this mission? Each of you can rely on your College to provide the very best in networking, collaboration, science, and education to maintain the trust, the integrity and the excellence we all aspire to. This is the “Bow-Tie” of our wonderful UIC College of Dentistry.

Sincerely,

Clark M. Stanford, DDS, PhD, MHA UIC Distinguished Professor and Dean College of Dentistry

In 1980, a small group of CDA members took action and founded The Dentists Insurance Company with a mission to protect only dentists. Since that time, TDIC has transformed from providing professional liability coverage to delivering comprehensive insurance and risk management solutions for a community of 24,000 policyholders in 15 states. Today, we still protect only dentists — with the same drive and dedication as our founders. Discover our dentist-led vision at tdicinsurance.com.

IGNITE REPORT

from left to right: Mr. Ravi Jadia, Ms. Masumi Jadia, Mr. Mark Valentino, Dr. Kamlesh Amin, Dean Clark Stanford, Ms. Hala Dairi, Dr. Firas Dairi, Ms. Nawal Dairi

A WIDENING CIRCLE

Loyal alumnus’ generosity inspires other donors By Gail Mansfield Dr. Kamlesh G. Amin, ’83, isn’t just a generous donor to the UIC College of Dentistry. Through his enthusiasm, energy, and example, he also inspires other alumni to give back. “Dean Stanford, our department heads, and my advancement team all work hard, but it’s the one-on-one relationships alumni have with each other that truly make the difference in attracting support,” says Associate Dean for Advancement Mark J. Valentino. “Dr. Amin really partners with other graduates and inspires them to give.” Leading by example, Dr. Amin recently created the Dr. Kamlesh G. Amin Endowed Professorship Fund. This generous gift will support a named professorship, with preference given to faculty in the restorative sciences. 6

Dr. Amin says he’s committed to helping the College continue to attract high-quality professors, and sees his gift, inspired by positive improvements at the dental school during recent years, as a means to support the prestige of the faculty. Of his choice to give preference to faculty in the restorative sciences, he says, “I’m a general practitioner and have seen the way that restorative skills produce a much better dentist. Focusing the gift this way can attract very good talent to the College.” Endowments make it possible for a gift to live on in perpetuity, preserving the principal and using its earnings to support the intent of the fund. An endowment can be created through an outright gift, through a bequest in a will, or

IGNITE REPORT the Dean’s Council, composed of individuals who contribute $1,000 or more each year, ever since. He and his partner, Dr Yenna, also made a clinical operatory naming gift during clinic renovations, and Dr. Amin regularly supports other College giving initiatives, including the Fund for Excellence and the Dr. Bruce S. Graham and Linda M. Graham Scholarship Fund. Dr. Amin is also a member of the dean’s Strategic Advisory Board, on which he provides valuable perspective as an active practitioner. “Dr. Amin is a great example of an alumnus who started giving back after he established himself in the profession,” says Valentino. “He supported the previous two capital campaigns, Campaign Illinois, Brilliant Futures, and is now making his legacy gift through the IGNITE campaign.” Not only is Dr. Amin a generous donor; he also speaks regularly to other alumni about contributing to the dental school, often inviting them to revisit the campus to see the positive changes. “He opened his home to us for what we call a ‘parlor event’ at the beginning of IGNITE so that the dean could talk about what the campaign would mean for the College,” Valentino says. “Dr. Amin followed up and helped open up doors to other people,” Valentino continues. “As a result, we’ve raised almost a million dollars from that one event.” Two other significant gifts that grew out of seeds planted at that event are the Dr. Sham S. Chandok and Dr. Syed S. Rehman Scholarship Fund (see page 7) and the Dairi Family Scholarship Fund (learn more on page 9).

through a life income gift such as a charitable gift annuity or a charitable remainder trust. Endowed scholarships and faculty professorships—like the one made possible by Dr. Amin—are a focus of the IGNITE campaign. Says Dean Clark Stanford, “Dr. Amin’s dedication to the College is based on how he has seen the profession change. He recognizes the need for an in-depth, state-of-the-art dental education and the critical need to recruit and retain worldclass faculty. Doing this requires creating endowed positions, and Dr. Amin’s support has been phenomenal in its impact.”

LONGTIME, LOYAL SUPPORT Dr. Amin operates a successful Chicago family practice and is devoted to mentoring young dentists and dentists-to-be in the program—some of whom later come to work with and for him. His support of the dental school has been wide and deep, extending back to 1991. In 1997, he established the Dr. Kamlesh Amin Scholarship Award. He’s been a member of

Says Dr. Amin of his inspiration to other alumni donors, “We’re all here because of the UIC College of Dentistry. People want to help, but sometimes they get busy with their working lives and forget. “I’m very comfortable reminding others of what the school has done for them and asking them to help. And most of them say yes.”

KEEPING THE GIVING CYCLE GOING His UIC experience was a career changer—and he’s paying it forward “What I got from UIC is priceless,” says Dr. Syed Rehman, ‘15. “I believe in the cycle of keeping it going, so giving back is the least I can do.” Dr. Rehman, who runs 14 dental practices across Milwaukee and the Chicago suburbs, is generously paying his College of Dentistry education forward with the new Dr. Sham S. Chandok and Dr. Syed S. Rehman Scholarship Fund. Dr. Chandok mentored Dr. Rehman in the early days of practice, and the two later became partners. 7

Dr. Kamlesh Amin with daughter, Ms. Masumi Jadia, and son-in-law, Mr. Ravi Jadia.

Dr. Firas Dairi with his wife, Ms. Hala Dairi and daughter, Ms. Nawal Dairi.

Says Dean Clark Stanford, “Dr. Rehman recognized the value of investing in key programs using a targeted approach. He’s making a large impact on an area of personal interest. This personal approach is so valuable in seeing the impact of giving, because it’s something that comes from the heart.”

“It was an amazing program,” Dr. Rehman says. “The professors and mentors we got were humble and down to earth, and I’m still in contact with many of them. I joined right when we began small-group learning. It really developed my interpersonal skills and taught me how to speak up.”

Dr. Rehman’s road to successful multi-practice ownership came with some twists and turns. After earning a bachelor’s degree in dental surgery in India, Dr. Rehman and his wife, Ameena, moved to the United States. He completed an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at New York University, then enrolled in the UIC College of Dentistry’s advanced standing program for practitioners who have completed their dental studies in other countries (DMD-AS).

His first days in the U.S. were “struggle, struggle, struggle,” recalls Dr. Rehman, who sees his time at the College as a genuine turning point. At an IGNITE campaign event hosted by Dr. Kamlesh Amin, ’83 (also see page X), Dr. Rehman saw an opportunity to extend a hand to today’s dental students by creating a scholarship fund.

At UIC, he earned several scholarships and awards, including the prestigious Frances Best Watkins Award, Dr. Kamlesh Amin Scholarship Award and Dr. Lina K. Tharp Award, recognizing Dr. Rehman’s clinical excellence, academic standing, compassion for patients, and leadership skills.

“You can’t forget how you started or where it started,” he says. “You’ve always got to go back to your roots to remind yourself of your beginnings—and be there for people who were there for you. “I am who I am because of the College.”

IGNITE REPORT “IT’S THE ONE-ON-ONE RELATIONSHIPS ALUMNI HAVE WITH EACH OTHER THAT TRULY MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN ATTRACTING SUPPORT.” —Associate Dean for Advancement Mark J. Valentino

GENERATIONS OF GIVING Family-funded scholarship designed for long-term support Dr. Firas Dairi defines wealth as “not how much you have, but how much you give.” And he believes the act of giving should be a multi-generational effort. So when he and his wife, Hala, generously established the Dairi Family Scholarship Fund at the UIC College of Dentistry, they did so with the intention that their children would carry on funding the scholarship once they’re established in their own careers. “Giving back is a pleasure. For UIC to give us this opportunity is a beautiful thing,” he says. “We believe our kids, the new generation, need to realize that they can’t just go out and make money; they have a responsibility to the generations to come. We want our kids to be good citizens who have a habit of philanthropy that leads to better research and healthcare—and they should be loyal to the institutions that educated them.” A highly accomplished family with multiple interests, the Dairis have all chosen careers in healthcare and are extremely active in the community and humanitarian causes. Dr. Dairi, a graduate of the University of Baghdad College of Medicine who completed a fellowship in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine at Rush University, is a pulmonologist in private practice in the northern suburbs. Hala who studied French literature at the University of Damascus, manages the practice and has received the Karam Foundation’s Woman of the Year Award for her work on behalf of Syrian refugees.

under Dr. Fady Charbel, Professor and Head, Richard L. and Gertrude W. Fruin Professor, and Chief of the Neurovascular Section. After graduating from the Midwestern University Chicago School of Osteopathic Medicine, Obaida is now an internal medicine resident at Dartmouth University Medical Center. Layal, the Dairis’ middle child, earned a BS in biology cum laude from UIC’s Honors College, where she was recognized with a Chancellor’s Student Service Award. She’s currently a third-year dental student at the College. Her younger sister, Nawal, is majoring in biology at Loyola University Chicago, where she’s a Gannon Scholar at the Gannon Center for Women and Leadership. Nawal also plans to go to dental school—and “UIC is my first choice,” she says.

FANS OF THE COLLEGE—AND ALL OF UIC The idea for the scholarship grew out of an IGNITE campaign event hosted by Dr. Kamlesh Amin, ’83 (see page 6), a neighbor whose daughter is a close friend of the Dairi family. “When Layal got accepted to the dental school, our relationship developed,” Dr. Dairi explains, adding that his family has been inspired by Dr. Amin’s career story and pattern of giving to the College. “He’s an immigrant who’s succeeded and become a true pioneer of dental services in his community,” he says. Beyond establishing the dental school scholarship, the Dairis support UIC as a whole in thanks for their children’s education and the top-quality care a family member received from Dr. Charbel. “UIC is a jewel that people sometimes miss out on,” Firas says. “It’s giving my kids the education they deserve and need, leading them to better careers, and helping them reach their goals.” “From their family’s experience with the dental profession and dental school, the Dairis see that their gift will be transformative,” says Dean Clark Stanford. “Their support will make key impacts on the College, its faculty, and especially the excellence of student education.” Future dental student Nawal says she plans to contribute to the scholarship fund once her career is launched. “I was blessed to have my education covered, and I definitely want to help students who are struggling,” she says. “It’s the way we were raised,” Nawal explains. “My parents always taught us that anything you’re given you should share.”

Son Obaida received a BS in neuroscience magna cum laude from UIC ‘s Honors College. For all four years of his undergraduate work, he was a neurosurgery research fellow

“The PPE being collected is distributed across the UIC healthcare system— it’s a team effort.” —Dean Stanford

RISING TO THE COVID-19 CHALLENGE Teamwork enables College to continue classes online while providing urgent care BY GAIL MANSFIELD

The patient had stage 4 pharyngeal cancer, requiring a full mouth extraction before he began radiation and chemotherapy. But, because it was early in the COVID-19 crisis, he could identify no insurance-compatible Chicago-area dental professionals whose offices were open. He found help at the UIC College of Dentistry, where a dedicated team of 40 faculty members, students, residents, and staff made themselves available daily to fill a critical community need. With vanishingly few options for urgent 18

dental care available in Chicagoland until early summer, the College stepped up to fill the gap, triaging 1,500 adult patients and treating more than 300 patients between March 23 and June 4. The cancer patient’s case highlights how well College constituents worked together to provide care during an uncertain time—and the positive outcomes this teamwork yielded for grateful patients. “It was a tricky situation; it was early on, and we weren’t doing many extractions,” recalls

fourth-year dental student Benjamin Richardson. “With great

COMMITTED TO PATIENTS With so many dental offices shut down, patients with pressing dental problems usually had two choices: urgent care clinics— which rarely have dental professionals on staff—or emergency rooms. “Our goal has been to minimize the diversion of patients with dental urgencies to hospital emergency rooms so as to alleviate unnecessary burdens” on COVID 19-stressed healthcare systems, explains Dean Clark Stanford. Dr. Susan Rowan, ’84, Executive Associate Dean and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, and Clinical Associate Professor, led the College’s planning and implementation of limited clinical services during the pandemic. Initially, the College canceled all patients through June using automated messaging, but it quickly became apparent that Chicagoland was experiencing a dearth of emergency dental care.

Dr. Betti Shahin outside of the College. Because having staff members in the building to process payments would expose more people to risk, the College served the community further by providing all clinical services for free through early June.

EVALUATION AND PROBLEM-SOLVING The faculty who triaged and treated patients during the pandemic’s first weeks followed an urgent care protocol to assess the level of urgency. “Patients with dental emergencies that were potentially life-threatening—for example trauma or swelling that could result in airway obstruction—would get in immediately,” says Dr. Betti Shahin, DPDS, MSc, DMD, Clinical Assistant Professor, who screened patients by phone as well as seeing cases requiring immediate attention. Most elective treatments had to be deferred to avoid the danger of aerosolization. In many cases, faculty were able to resolve the problem with information or by prescribing an antibiotic or pain medication. Sometimes they recommended a temporary fix, such as dental glue available at a pharmacy.

“We have an obligation to our patients and it’s not in our ethos to turn away people in need,” Dr. Rowan says. “So we began urgent services, paying special attention to infection control and personal protective equipment.”

“Most importantly, we assured them that if they needed us at any time, they should call us back,” Dr. Shahin continues. “Many patients were relieved—they didn’t want to come here or go to the ER if they didn’t have to.”

At Dr. Rowan’s request, between 10 and 15 faculty members took turns speaking with patients by phone to understand their dental issues and screen them for possible exposure to the coronavirus. “Our phenomenal students, who were at home and wanted to help, volunteered to come in,” she adds, explaining that the clinic had three or four students plus three faculty members seeing patients with urgent issues each day.

Although students and residents in the clinic couldn’t perform routine dentistry, “We gave them a good understanding of what emergency treatment involves,” she says. For example, oral surgery residents were more frequently using the cone beam CT, using 3D imaging to evaluate whether interventions should be surgical or nonsurgical. “Some of the students became quite good at it,” Dr. Shahin says.

Soon, the College began receiving phone calls from people who weren’t patients of record at UIC. To keep ERs and urgent care clinics from being overburdened, “We decided to treat anyone in need,” Dr. Rowan says.

FEATURE TRANSITION TO REMOTE LEARNING Complementing the College’s clinical response to COVID-19 was the quick action the dental school took to bring instruction online. “Our deans, department heads, program directors, faculty, and staff came together to quickly transition our educational curriculum to a remote format,” says Dean Stanford. “When students ‘returned’ from spring break on March 30, they did so via telelearning. It was a big lift requiring teamwork, ingenuity and collaboration of our faculty and staff to make sure our students had the tools they needed to learn remotely and complete the spring semester.” Following guidance from the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation, the College took every step necessary to ensure residents and dental students could graduate and be prepared to enter practice this summer. And, although an in-person commencement ceremony wasn’t possible this year, the College worked with the Dental Student Council and class representatives to create a graduation keepsake book for graduates and hosted a virtual graduation celebration.

COLLABORATION AND CAMARADERIE Beginning June 8, the College began its phased clinical and education reintegration plans. “Our comprehensive plan covers four aspects: the didactic curriculum, technical and simulation curriculum, clinical operations, and research and post-graduate programs,” says Dean Stanford. Though the plan lays out stages for reopening postgraduate and general dentistry clinics, gradually adding types of procedures that can be performed, the timing is fluid. “This is a schedule the virus will determine, not us,” says Dean Stanford. “We’re staggering the opening of the clinics so that we don’t stress our infrastructure. “I joke that it’s easier to shut down a college than to start one—the crank is far harder on the arm than the brake is on one’s foot,” he adds. “This outcome is only occurring because of the dedicated and incredible hard work of so many faculty and administrative staff.” Dr. Rowan and student Richardson share Dean Stanford’s admiration for the remarkable teamwork shown across the College. Dr. Rowan, who first came to the College as a dental student in 1980 and has been part of the community almost continuously since, says, “I’m never been prouder to be part of this organization. Our folks here are just beyond words. Everybody said yes and nobody complained.”

“Healthcare professionals are widely admired as they courageously fight on the front lines of COVID-19, helping patients while putting themselves at risk of exposure,” says Richardson. “Among this group are some unsung heroes: the professionals who continue to treat dental emergency patients but aren’t usually mentioned in the news. I’m very proud to be part of the College’s response during this unprecedented time. We’ve seen the whole dental school pull together.”

A SHIFT IN PROTOCOLS As the College of Dentistry continues its clinical and education reintegration, new protocols have been established to reduce the risk of COVID-19:

• Social distancing: The College requires students, faculty, and staff to remain at least six feet from other people whenever possible and to avoid congregating.

• Personal protective equipment (PPE): All providers, faculty, and staff actively engaged in patient care must wear a gown, gloves, eye protection and a level II or III N95 or KN95 mask. Head coverings are encouraged.

• Enhanced housekeeping: From lounges to elevators, classrooms to offices, public spaces are receiving additional attention.

• Fewer entrances: Employees are using only the south door off Parking Lot F; patients are using the Paulina Street door. At both entrances, temperatures are being taken.

• Clinical administrative controls: Prescreening of patients for COVID-19 risk continues one day prior to appointment and again on the day of appointment.

• Engineering controls: Furniture has been reduced and separated to encourage distancing. With campus engineers and College of Engineering faculty, the College is evaluating other environmental system changes to the clinic infrastructure.

PROFILE

DR. PARIKH PUSHES THE PARAMETERS BY GAIL MANSFIELD

Dr. Roshan Parikh and Dean Clark Stanford. AS WALMART’S HEAD OF DENTISTRY, ALUMNUS IS HELPING CHANGE THE WAY PATIENTS ACCESS QUALITY CARE Walmart’s slogan is “Save money. Live better.” For Roshan Parikh, ’08, the healthcare version of that philosophy might translate into “Save money. Live better—and healthier.” Last year, Dr. Parikh—affectionately known as “Dr. Ro” to patients and many colleagues—was named the first-ever Head of Dentistry for Walmart Health to help develop and roll out a strategic roadmap for the retail giant’s recently debuted dental services. In this new role, Dr. Parikh is using his more than 12 years of experience as a practicing dentist, private-equity backed healthcare provider, and DSO founder—and the solid, personal 22

education he received at the UIC College of Dentistry—to build strategic partnerships that bridge the gap between patient care and business.

NEW HORIZONS IN HEALTHCARE “People often forgo dentistry until it becomes a huge issue,” Dr. Parikh says. “What we’re doing at Walmart is creating much more access in communities that didn’t have it, at prices patients can afford.” Building on less extensive healthcare services already offered in its stores, the company piloted Walmart Health, an initiative that includes a comprehensive dental clinic as well as primary care, counseling, labs and x-rays, health screenings, vision services, hearing, fitness and nutrition information, and health insurance education and enrollment services. The

model focuses on transparent and low pricing for all key health services regardless of patient insurance status. To avoid surprises, patients receive a cost estimate as soon as they book their appointments. Walmart Health has opened its first four clinics, three in Georgia and one in Arkansas. The company has plans to expand the model to other Dr. Roshan Parikh. communities, including adding two locations in Chicago to stores that are being rebuilt and redesigned after they were looted in June protests. After limiting services to emergent patients during the early days of the pandemic, Walmart Health has returned to a steady number of dental patients for routine care. “With reports of 40 million unemployed, saving money and price transparency matter more than ever,” Dr. Parikh says, “but I also like to say that time is the new currency.” Working adults are especially hesitant to take off work right now, so patients welcome an opportunity to get a cleaning on Sunday afternoon rather than taking off work on Tuesday. And even when coronavirus is behind us, “I don’t think there’s ever going to be a time when people say, “Let’s spend more money and take more time off work to see the doctor or get my teeth cleaned,” Dr. Parikh says.

HEALTHY VALUE Offering reduced-cost healthcare and dentistry may seem counterintuitive to revenue goals, but the scalability of affordable dental care, he says, is the wave of the future because it results in direct patient benefits beyond saving them money and time. Just as hospitals are increasingly required to meet thresholds for low patient readmissions, the practice of dentistry is moving in the direction of associating compensation with outcomes rather than to individual procedures. “We think outcomes should be the main focus and means tying success to keeping patients healthy,” Dr. Parikh says. “If we’re creating access so that patients come in for regular care, not

just when they’re in dire need, patients will be healthier and live longer.”

A PERFECT FIT Dr. Parikh is bringing diverse experiences from his academic and professional background to bear in his new role. The same year he graduated from the UIC College of Dentistry, he bought his first practice in the south suburbs of Chicago. Just three employees in 650 square feet grew into a thriving dental services organization (DSO). Now, Chicagoland Smile Group is a network of 20-plus multispecialty dental group practices with more than 70 dentists and dental specialists. Dr. Parikh remains a part owner. As he rapidly grew his practice, Dr. Parikh earned a master of business administration degree from Loyola University Chicago. He used his boosted business acumen to manage his DSO by metrics. “As a company grows, you can’t have line-of-sight management of everything,” he explains. He learned to take dashboards and strata and slice the data to have a deeper understanding of performance, priorities, opportunities, and challenges. Now, “I can speak to a board member, CFO, or private-equity person, but I can also translate why numbers should matter to a single dentist or hygienist,” Dr. Parikh says. One illuminating example: at Chicagoland Smile Group, he began asking the front desk to measure outbound calls to patients who’d missed their appointments. “We tracked how many patients got back on the books and how much revenue came through from those appointments,” Dr. Parikh recalls. After he showed skeptical dentists how robust callback efforts could blossom into patients and dollars, some of them called or texted him to express their amazement: “It worked!” That penchant for big-picture thinking—along with expertise in rapid corporate growth—is a major reason why Walmart tapped Dr. Parikh to lead its dental services. “I’m bringing perspective and experience with me to help Walmart live its mention of live better and expand business while keeping the patient experience at the center,” he says. “Whenever you grow, you must remember what’s important,” he adds. “All my offices have kept a unique culture despite being part of a larger DSO. They remain focused on providing personal attention and care to every patient and maintaining excellent relationships among their colleagues. A medical practice that sacrifices personal care to attain franchise growth will find it difficult to succeed and begin to lose their patients to smaller practices that have the time to devote to their needs.”

EXPERIENCE AND ENCOURAGEMENT AT UIC Dr. Parikh credits the UIC College of Dentistry with building 23

FALL 2020 | NUMBER 68

PROFILE him a foundation and letting him climb higher—especially in his clinical experience. “I’d finished a lot of the requirements, but I wanted to do veneers. So the clinical instructors said, ‘Let’s find you a veneer case,’” he recalls. He went on to ask for additional clinical training outside what was required—always with the faculty’s support. “They could have easily said, ‘You’re a student and you need to stay in this box,’ but they weren’t telling me I couldn’t do this. They were there for me every step of the way,” he recalls.

DR. PARIKH IN BRIEF Here’s a snapshot of Dr. Roshan Parikh, involved alum and Walmart’s new Head of Dentistry:

• Active in the College: frequently mentors current students and recent graduates, has served as a judge at Clinic and Research Day, and consults with the Office of Advancement on issues relating to recent alumni.

• 2018 recipient of the College’s C.A.R.E. (Connecting Alumni to Reignite and Engage) Award, which honors an alum who graduated no more than ten years ago and meets criteria such as involvement in humanitarian and philanthropic efforts, leadership in organized dentistry, promotion of access to care, alleviating disparities in care, and other accomplishments that have brought honor to the University and the College.

• Founder and current part owner of a Chicagobased dental support organization (DSO), now a network of more than 20 practices with 70-plus dentists and specialists

• Founder of the dental consulting firm DSO Strategy, LLC, to help entrepreneurial dentists strategize a growth plan to transform practices into DSOs and investable platforms for institutional capital

• 2008 graduate of the UIC College of Dentistry

• MBA from Loyola University Chicago with dual emphases in finance and marketing

Join Our Alumni Board

Activity on the UIC Dental Alumni Board offers the opportunity to network, engage with alumni, and effect change at the College.

• Member, American Dental Association, Georgia Dental Association, and American Association of Cosmetic Dentists

• Active in the community, including membership in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Give Back A Smile, Karma International, and Generation Rescue

• Enjoys travel, biking, basketball, and running in the park with his goldendoodle, Jordy

By the time he graduated and went on to business school, Dr. Parikh had a portfolio of above-and-beyond dental cases he’d completed. “When I’d go on interviews, people couldn’t believe I’d done this work,” he says. “I left the College knowing that I had no ceiling and could do anything,” he adds. “I was the only person in my dental school class who, with hundreds of thousands of dollars in tuition debt, bought a dental practice. Eleven banks denied me a loan, but I wrote a 12-page business plan and got the funding. I did that not only because I knew how to write a business plan, but also because no one told me ‘no’ here.”

THE SHAPE OF SUCCESS How would Dr. Parikh like his legacy to look, and in what way will he define success? “When I used to think about success, I defined it as ‘FIRE—financially independent, retire early,’” he says. “But as corny as it sounds, everyone wants to leave the world a better place than we found it. Healthcare has a lot of complex challenges. I really believe that this is what I was meant to do: to bring everything I’ve learned and all my experiences to this. “I want to be able to look back and say I made a difference in dentistry in terms of access to care,” he adds. “Here’s what access looked like before Walmart Health—and here’s what it looks like now.”

Karoline Biami, Class of 2020, Reflects on her Dentistry Education and Graduation Emptying my lockers at UIC today was bittersweet. I felt like mission accomplished. It was a happy moment to graduate finally! However, I was also sad about how everything came to an end. I imagined a completely different scenario. In my mind, I would have many hugs and goodbyes... but it was not that way. I was there in the empty college alone with my memories. Graduated during this pandemic is very weird and sad. It's like there is no closure. I did not have the chance to say all my goodbyes to so many, many friends that helped me so much. I will never forget all that I lived there. It was not easy, I had literally many, many days where I doubted myself, where I thought about giving up. But thanks to some fantastic people that I had the pleasure of meeting there, I did not! Many, many tears! But also funny and happy memories. How much I discovered about myself there. I grew up, I became stronger. It was a long journey, longer that I thought would be... But I did it!!! God held my hands there and showed his power and mercy on the face of my classmates, professors, college employees, and patients. My strength came from Him. Thanks, UIC COD, for all the lessons that I learned. I will miss you. DMD!!!!

RESEARCH DR. ANNE GEORGE EARNS PRESTIGIOUS IADR AWARD Congratulations to Dr. Anne George, the Dr. Allan G. Brodie Endowed Professor, Professor of Oral Biology, and UIC University Scholar, who has received the 2020 International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Distinguished Scientist Award for Basic Research in Biological Mineralization. The honor includes a monetary award, a commemorative plaque, and membership on the IADR subcommittee that selects the award recipient for the next five years.

Dr. Anne George.

Dr. Anne George.

Dr. George has been instrumental in cloning dentin matrix protein genes (DMPs) from the mineralized dentin matrix of animal models, and she is working toward dentists filling cavities with DMP1, which would allow dentin to regenerate.

In addition to her work on biomaterials and regenerative sciences, Dr. George’s research also focuses on bioengineering and stem cell biology. She is the director of the College’s Brodie Tooth Development Genetics and Regenerative Medicine Research Laboratory.

Her lab’s research focus on biomineralization is from the perspectives of dentistry, as in dentin regeneration; of basic research, as in understanding the role of proteins in forming a calcified tissue; and lastly, translational research, as in development of biomineralization related protein-based biomaterials for bone and dentin regeneration.

Dr. George is internationally known for her pioneering work in protein regulation of biomineralization and regenerative sciences.

The research of Dr. George and her team on the role of the gene Dentin Matrix Protein 1 (DMP1) in bone metabolism could lead to a new way of filling oral cavities. They are studying how proteins can regenerate dentin, a calcified tissue of the body that, along with enamel, cementum, and pulp, is one of the four major components of teeth.

FALL 2020 | NUMBER 68

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Fellow alumni, future alumni, prospective alumni, and friends: It has been a great honor to serve as your UIC College of Dentistry Dental Alumni Board President for the last two years and represent over 6,000 alumni, students, faculty, and future graduates. The alumni board exists to help our alumni and, by extension, the College and University, succeed. The world gets more complicated with every passing day. We get involved with our families and work and suddenly we’ve lost touch with those outside our close circle. In recent months with the COVID-19 pandemic, we can see and feel how important connection is within your immediate circle and beyond. The Dental Alumni Board can help you reengage with lost friends and colleagues. We do this through the utilization of available resources and a variety of “stay connected” programs designed with you in mind. Offerings such as print and digital communications, continuing education, recent alumni networking events, the golf outing, alumni reunion, organized dentistry receptions, and service to the board are all put forth to support you as you pursue success in your post-academic life and career. As I think about my time served as president, I am proud of our golf Chairs in bringing back the golf outing and having double the attendees, hosting our second annual C.A.R.E event for recent alumni, and increased alumni participation and donations on Giving Tuesday. At the same time, I would challenge you to think of ways you can give back to the University to whatever degree you are comfortable. You can participate by judging the annual Clinic and Research Day, sponsoring the career fair, joining an alumni board committee, and/or attending academic and social events. And let’s not forget athletics. Rooting for the Flames in whatever sports appeal to you is always a fun and exciting time and a great way to connect and reconnect with old friends.

32

There any many ways to assist the College without being physically present on campus. Supporting the annual fund, scholarships, and awards with contributions to the IGNITE campaign enhance programs and research, and celebrate students and residents in their scholarly endeavors. Spreading the good news about the College through social media and by word of mouth also provides ambassadorship for our student recruitment and patient care efforts. As you will find, giving back has another benefit: it feels good. This July, as I become the immediate past, vice president Dr. Paul S. Burkey, Loyola ’83, will transition to the President’s role. He will continue to represent all of us and I know he will do a great job. I am also looking forward to working with him as well. I would also like to welcome our newest directors, Dr. Joseph W. Hamman, ’85, Dr. Victoria A. Ursitti, Pediatric Dentistry ’95, Dr. Christian X. Caicedo, ’19, and returning directors Dr. Shellie M. Harden, ’94, and Dr. Frank A. Maggio, Loyola ’71, UIC Periodontics ‘75. The prestige and professional impact of our degrees and certificates are a reflection of a superior education, reinforced by the College’s ongoing commitment to evolving technology, emerging science, improving the curriculum, and engaging our communities to address oral health disparities in Chicago, throughout Illinois, and beyond. Thank you for all that you do. This is my final message as President of the Alumni Board, as my term ends this year. I encourage you to explore all that we have to offer, to stay connected, and to make yourself and the UIC College of Dentistry stronger. And if you should find yourself in the area, please do not hesitate to stop by the College and see all the good that is going on. The staff here will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. It has been my privilege to serve. I couldn’t have done it without you, my fellow alumni and friends of the College. I look forward to seeing you at the next College of Dentistry event, when we are able to resume in person events. Thank you,

Dr. Jon Nickelsen, '03 President, UIC Dental Alumni Board

when Tony visits the dentist that he discovers the truth about the dentist and sees the smile beneath the mask. Dr. Markewicz decided to write this book in part because depictions of dentists in popular culture have often been negative. But many people do not realize that the profession of dentistry has evolved over the years. With improved dental technology and techniques, dentistry is more comfortable today than it has ever been. But how do we change the image of dentistry? Clearly, we cannot change the way dentists are portrayed in popular culture or prevent children from hearing exaggerated stories told by their peers. So, he decided the best way to change the current cultural stigma around dentistry was to address it head-on, thus, his children’s book Dentists Are Monsters. Dr. Markewicz’s hope is that this book reassures children that it is okay to be nervous to visit the dentist, but there also may not be truth behind all the rumors they’ve heard.

While in his pediatric rotation at UIC, Dr. Markewicz noticed that kids, many of whom had not been to the dentist before, came into the clinic terrified. “If it was their first visit, how could they possibly already be scared? I did some research and found out that fear of the dentist generally stems from two places: past traumatic experiences and things they hear from friends, family, and the media,” Says Dr. Markewicz. Although Dr. Markewicz did everything during a patient’s visit to limit the trauma and make them comfortable, he had no way to mitigate the image of the dentist portrayed in some movies, or heard about in stories told by their friends. Regardless of where or who they hear it from, children often arrive at dental visits with a preconceived notion that dentists might be monsters. His goal was to flip that idea on its head through a simple story—Dentists Are Monsters. Just like children might hear scary stories about the dentist from their friends, the main character, Tony the Tooth, hears frightening rumors from other teeth in the mouth. For example, is it true that dentists wear masks because, like dragons, they can breathe fire? It is only 34

As for the experience of writing the book? Dr. Markewicz said that, “The journey from idea conception to releasing the book on Amazon took nearly two years. Over those two years, I worked closely with editors, illustrators, book layout designers, and printers to bring Tony’s story to life. Although the process required a lot of patience, I was eager to work with creative individuals. Unboxing the first printing of the book was a dream come true!” The response to the book has been more than Dr. Markewicz had hoped for. He was honored to be interviewed by both the American Dental Association and the Chicago Tribune. The book is now in a second printing. He has also been using the book as a tool to educate children in his community. He began going into local elementary school classrooms to read his book, discuss dental visits, and review oral hygiene concepts. Dr. Markewicz reports that the overwhelmingly positive response from the kids he reads the book to has been the most rewarding part of the entire process. In his practice, Dr. Markewicz hopes to make uncomfortable and anxious dental visits a thing of the past and to change the stigma of dentistry one young patient at a time.

ALUMNI PROFILE THE TIME IS NOW: HOW DR. SCOTT DRUCKER IS CHANGING THE WAY YOU RUN YOUR DENTAL PRACTICE By Jessica Mueller

Dr. Scott Drucker. Photo by Tricia Koning Creator and President of Supply Clinic, Dr. Scott Drucker, Periodontics and MS Oral Sciences ‘16, lives by the mantra, “The time is now,” words which resound in him and serve as the driving force in his decision to forgo specialized dentistry full-time in order to start his own marketplace business. Chicago-based Supply Clinic is disrupting the traditional dental products consumer experience, delivering dental supplies around the nation and changing the way practitioners run their dental practices. Dr. Drucker came upon this business idea as a newly graduated DMD looking to purchase instruments for his residency program. He found the run-around inherent in such a straightforward task to be riddled with problems, including opaque and inconsistent pricing structures and inefficient ordering processes—all things that could be streamlined on a user-friendly platform. In the age of e-commerce and marketplace consumption, this supply sourcing problem was the perfect place to add some fine tuning. Together with his brother Jacob Drucker, Dr. Scott Drucker began Supply Clinic, which links product manufacturers and distributors directly to users at a competitive price point that is often 30-35% below distributor pricing. Because Dr. Drucker is himself a dentist, he takes very seriously the need to vet and research each of the 65,000 products that reach his e-shelves. This way, dentists around the nation are assured of the highest 36

Supply Clinic is also great for his 120-plus sellers because they are able to reach a much larger audience, capturing more of the buyers’ market across the country. Supply Clinic also works to help the seller’s companies with content-rich product pages, which provide dental education on product use and specifications. So where did this all begin? Dr. Drucker’s interest in dentistry began with a childhood interest in sciences, a little nudging from his parents, who are physicians, and an auspicious shadowing experience with Dr. Jeffery Ganeles, now a member of Supply Clinic’s Board of Advisors. “I realized I wanted to pursue specialty care after shadowing Dr. Ganeles, and there were a lot of attractive aspects to the UIC College of Dentistry residency programs, including comprehensive patient care, clinic rotations outside of the College, and a great mentorship and research experience with Dr. Lin Tao, UIC College of Dentistry Professor of Oral Biology.” Dr. Drucker went on to say that the UIC College of Dentistry, “offers students a tremendous amount of hands-on experience, and is well positioned to allow for residents to leave very

ALUMNI PROFILE equipped to provide excellent patient care. If I could give one piece of advice to current students it would be to unabashedly pick the brains of their faculty. The faculty are a wealth of knowledge, and the only stupid question is the one you're too afraid to ask.” While in residency Dr. Drucker definitely leaned on his faculty and co-residents through it all saying, “I'm not sure if I would have made it without the help of Dr. Jennifer Adhami (née Shango), ‘16, Dr. Ankur Patel, ‘16, and Dr. Samia Suleiman-Ata, ‘16. I'm thankful that UIC brought such an amazing group together and I learned the importance of working closely with a team—patient care simply cannot be delivered without a number of key participants. Good team dynamic is equally as important when running a startup, or any business for that matter.” Aside from successfully running his business, Dr. Drucker practices periodontics, taking on unique patient cases. He also finds time to speak at organized dentistry events and is even making his rounds in media outlets as a top changemaker in the Chicago business scene. “I bring a very different perspective to the table than most dentists, and am always happy to chat or share things I've learned,” noted Dr. Drucker.

When asked what drives Dr. Drucker’s operations and decisions day in and day out, he said, “I love both of what I do. I genuinely like the surgeries that I perform. The patient interaction is super special and an absolute privilege. I am also very attracted to the opportunity to change an inefficient system that needs a lot of work. I’m actively tackling and solving a problem every day by providing the supplies and instruments necessary for patients to be cared for. It all ties together.” And while “the time is now,” future endeavors for Dr. Drucker and the team at Supply Clinic include streamlining other management operations in order to free up time-consuming tasks. Dr. Drucker said, “At the end of the day, our goal is to assist practitioners in refocusing back to delivering the most excellent care possible.” To see how Supply Clinic can change the way you run your dental practice, check out the e-marketplace at www.supplyclinic.com

STUDENT ACTIVITIES 2020 Clinic and Research Day Showcases College’s Research Talent With over 130 posters, our largest number ever, the 2020 Clinic and Research Day, held on March 5 allowed the postgraduates, students, and their faculty mentors to share their research with the dental and other health sciences communities. A wide variety of posters highlighted current research covering basic, behavioral, clinical, and applied sciences applicable in public health and prevention, the development of best practices in dentistry, and the creation of techniques and technology that will allow teeth to be regenerated in adults. Research occurs at the College from the “bench to the chairside” (and the reverse)—to accelerate diagnostic and interventional therapies for College patients. The 2020 Clinic and Research day exceeded expectations for engagement of the COD and surrounding research communities. In fact, over 60 individuals participated as judges for student poster presentations by undergraduate, dental, graduate, and advanced education students. The College’s day was enhanced by the support and participation of local, national, and international sponsors. The Keynote presenter Dr. Gregg Gilbert inspired the audience with his presentation on “Practice-based Research and the National Dental PBRN.” This project has new meaning for the College with the recent induction of a specialty node led by its own Dr. Sath Allareddy, Head of the Department of Orthodontics.

FACULTY/DEPARTMENT NEWS WELCOME TO DR. SCOTT TOMAR, ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR PREVENTION AND PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES By Sara Connell The College is thrilled to announce that Dr. Scott Tomar has joined us as the new Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health Sciences. Dr. Tomar was chosen after a national search. Dr. Tomar has an incredibly strong history of academic and service commitments having worked in the federal government’s Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, as well as holding various leadership positions at state and University institutions. Dean Clark Stanford noted, “Dr. Tomar brings a wealth of insights and experience around public health issues that concern and impact the citizens of Chicago, throughout Illinois, and across the nation.”

opportunity to help shape the future of the profession. I also am excited about the possibility of improving oral health and reducing inequities in one of the largest and most dynamic cities in North America. This provides a fabulous opportunity to provide care for large and often underserved communities, conduct research to better understand which policy and programmatic interventions best improve the public's oral health, and provide real-world educational opportunities as part of those initiatives.” Most recently, he was Professor and Director of Institutional Analysis and Evaluation at the University of Florida. He formerly taught at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Tomar’s previous work was with tobacco cessation and public policy initiatives to improve the health of all of our communities. Among Dr. Tomar’s goals in his new position are to maintain and expand the College of Dentistry’s community-based service learning model. In addition, he wants to strengthen the integration of dentistry into the rest of primary health care as well as public health. He believes that UIC has all the elements to enable better interprofessional education and practice, and most of the conditions that we deal with in dentistry share an array of common risk factors with other chronic conditions. Dr. Tomar also hopes to develop a new and innovative model of graduate education in population oral health. “No city or university in America is better poised to develop such a model,” noted Dr. Tomar.

Dr. Tomar’s combination of academic rigor, clinical expertise, leadership, management, and business expertise is proving invaluable as a member of the senior leadership of the College. His dental degree is from Temple University, his MPH is from Columbia University with board certification in Dental Public Health (following training at the University of Michigan) and his doctorate is in Public Health (DrPH) from the University of Michigan.

Although Dr. Tomar has only been with the College for a few months now, he has been “proud to join an institution that seeks and values input from its various constituencies, is committed to the health and well-being of the community it serves as well as its own people, and that rises to the occasion even when confronted with a situation that was not even on the radar screen just a few months ago.” During what is the most significant public health crisis in the last one hundred years, COVID-19, we are grateful to have Dr. Tomar’s expertise to assist the College moving forward.

On the move to UIC, Dr. Tomar said, “Dentistry’s legacy and impact on the public's health is largely defined by those whom we mentor and educate, and I am thrilled to be part of the leadership team of such a great college and have the

“We will get through this difficult situation together, and I now know that UIC College of Dentistry has the people and perspective to accomplish almost any goal to which it sincerely commits itself,” Dr. Tomar concluded.

FACULTY/DEPARTMENT NEWS ADMINISTRATION Dean Clark Stanford was quoted in a Crain’s Chicago Business article from May 25 about COVID-19 and dentists’ costs and potential changes to practices. “There’s a possibility coming out of this (pandemic) that dentists will be in larger group practices as co-owners,” says Dr. Clark Stanford, dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. “That provides scale, that provides efficiency, that provides distributed overhead— especially if we’re going to have to get into very costly mitigations for aerosols.”

FACULTY/DEPARTMENT NEWS ADMINISTRATION continued dentistry to the 180 registered Pre-Dental students. Dean Stanford also provided welcome remarks. Additionally, we had two relevant and informational presentations that the students enjoyed very much. They were the “Oral Effects of Marijuana and Vaping” presented by Dr. Beth Miloro and “Oral Health Education” led by the Oral Health Forum. As is the tradition, the Pre-Dental students were then bused to the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting exhibit hall where they learned about the latest technology in dentistry.

INTERDEPARTMENTAL UIC Dentistry now has four faculty members serving as officers of ISDS and CDS—Drs. Bona, Boghosian, Hale, and Schneider. The UIC College of Dentistry hosted 120 fifth graders that participated in the Rush Mini-Medical School program on February 8. The students engaged in several handson-activities such as Thumb Impressions “Thumbs Up for Dentistry,” Animal Anatomy led by Dr. Druzinsky and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), and the Mirror Skills/Tooth Anatomy led by the American Student Dental Association (ASDA). This is the youngest group of children that

we have hosted and definitely the largest. It was a great group effort by the faculty, staff, and students! Dr. Robert Druzinsky, Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Oral Biology and Dr. Asha Eapen, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, teamed up to travel to visit DMD-1 students at their homes, to deliver good cheer and donuts and cookies (physically distanced, of course). They visited students in Chicago and many suburbs, from Western Springs to Waconda and Evanston and had a great time doing it! Student Suhrud Shah said, "It was so kind of them to do this and it has definitely been the highlight for many of us DMD-1s while being confined to our homes for almost two months now. We are grateful to have professors that care about us so much!" During the 44th Annual Retirement Recognition Luncheon and Ceremony on March 5, 2020, a number of College of Dentistry retirees were honored. Congratulations!
