Heavy rains caused water to pool on the roof as drainage systems were overwhelmed.

“With Sterilization flooded and many of the instruments contaminated, I had to cancel clinics for a day-and-a-half,” Dr. Stanford said. “The support staff, along with Robin Waner, Director of Sterilization, literally rolled up their sleeves, put on gloves, and took all of those instrument cassettes apart that had already been sterilized, cleaned up all the instruments, repackaged them, and sterilized them again. Luckily, we didn’t lose the autoclaves.”

“Storage closets from the first to the fifth floor were affected,” explained Dr. Susan Rowan, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. “The flow of water caused a loss of supplies and materials.” “We lost revenue because we had to shut down the clinics,” Dr. Stanford added. “We also had to shut down Lecture Hall North; what with the HVAC repairs, some areas of the building are already closed off so we’re very tight for space, and this just exacerbated the problem.” The State of Illinois declared the flood a “Level I Emergency.” “That,” Dr. Stanford said, “allowed the HVAC contractors to tap the expertise of Servpro,” which is a firm that deals with water and fire remediation. “They brought in fans and dehumidifiers which were placed throughout the building, because the goal was to prevent mold.” Concerning the flood, “The response of University and College personnel was phenomenal,” Dr. Rowan said, noting that Mark Donovan, UIC Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services; Richard Anderson, UIC Director of Environmental Health and Safety; the College’s Fred Chapa; and Winston Atwater, UIC Superintendent of Building Maintenance all came out to the building in the wee hours of the morning, many of them bringing staff to help out.

He expressed his gratitude to Dr. Rowan; Dr. Darryl Pendleton, Associate Dean for Student and Diversity Affairs, and Dr. Seema Ashrafi, Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, who dealt with rearranging student space; Mark Donovan and his Facilities Management Staff; Janet Parker, UIC Associate Chancellor and Vice Provost for Budget and Resource Planning; and Provost Dr. Eric Gislason. “Everybody was incredible,” Dr. Rowan said. “Our staff had to work hard to contact patients to let them know that we had to cancel their appointments. Nish Shivnani, AxiUm Support Specialist, made emergency arrangements through the electronic patient record for messages to go out to as many scheduled patients as possible to inform them of clinic closures. Our registration staff communicated with patients who had not received the information and who arrived at the College.” The College’s personnel performed their duties and cleaned up the College “with optimism and a vision that we will dominate this challenge,” Dean Stanford said. “Everybody was unbelievably responsive, and everybody was helpful,” Dr. Rowan said. “We have the most incredible faculty, staff, students, and even patients who were rerouted, had to take stairs, had to make tremendous last minute changes, and did it all without complaining,” Dr. Rowan said. “Our faculty, staff, and students are already stressed, and I was amazed at their resilience concerning the flood,” Dr. Stanford said. “No one lost their cool. Everyone was constantly problem-solving. There’s no one who said we couldn’t do it. Again, everybody decided that ‘we are going to dominate this situation.’”

Dr. Stanford concluded, “In the end, our College is about people. The educational and research missions of our College make us distinctive; our excellence and the pride it brings only make us stronger.”

Grant to Expand Horizons for Pediatric Dentistry Residents; Some to Earn MPH

The Department of Pediatric Dentistry has been awarded a $1.5 million grant by the Federal Health Resources and Services Administration. The grant will allow Pediatric Dentistry residents to improve their knowledge and skills in public health dentistry, advocacy, and leadership, and provide them with the opportunity to improve access to care for vulnerable populations through pursuing alternative careers in academics, research, dental public health, and oral health policy. The grant will pay for tuition for two residents to pursue an MPH degree and another two to earn a Certificate in Public Health in cooperation with the UIC School of Public Health. The grant also will provide all Pediatric Dentistry residents the opportunity to teach oral health principles

and management of children, including special needs youngsters, in the subspecialty medical clinics at University of Illinois Hospital and partner clinics, where they will have an opportunity to experience different models of care. They will also receive training in leadership skills development. Dr. Marcio da Fonseca, Department Head, and Dr. David Avenetti, Director of the Pediatric Dentistry Postgraduate Program, were the Principal Investigators on this grant and will run the program. “The funding is approved for five years,” Dr. Avenetti explained. “The first year will be the planning year, and the next four will be for implementation. “We are going to solicit applicants to the MPH program and develop partnerships with clinics the College already has a collaboration with so our residents can rotate through to experience delivery of care in a different environment,” Dr. Avenetti continued. “We will also strengthen our ties with the University of Illinois Hospital in terms of educating physicians and residents about pediatric oral health issues.” “We have nine residents per year, and every year will include two in the Certificate in Public Health Program and two in the MPH program,” Dr. da Fonseca explained. “The others will continue to earn a Master’s in Oral Science and/ or a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry.” The grant will also provide a stipend for the MPH students in their third year. “One of our goals is to focus on leadership training

We want to develop leaders who can train others.” “But everyone, not only the people in those programs, will benefit because they will be rotating through community partner sites and the University of Illinois Hospital, and doing leadership training,” Dr. Avenetti said. “Only a handful of schools earned this grant,” Dr. da Fonseca noted. “The fact that we are one of them speaks to the strength of our plans and to the strength of UIC itself. “Our historic mission is serving the vulnerable populations of the State of Illinois, and we think that the people who go through this program will have a better idea of what public health means and how to serve the underserved,” Dr. da Fonseca concluded. “It will be a great addition to our graduate program.”

Dr. Adriana Semprum-Clavier Honored with National Outstanding Faculty Award

Dr. Adriana Semprum-Clavier, Co-Director of the DMD Advanced Standing program and Clinical Associate Professor, Restorative Dentistry, was honored with the Colgate Palmolive Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) National Outstanding Faculty Award at the HDA 25th Annual conference in San Antonio, TX. The Colgate Palmolive award recognizes the top faculty member who has “made a significant contribution toward enhancing the overall quality of oral health for the Hispanic population by exceeding the scope of their position as faculty member and HSDA advisor,” said Dr. Vidal Balderas, National President of the HDA. Dr. Semprum is advisor to the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) chapter at the College. The HSDA nominated Dr. Semprum for the national award “based on our activities to promote and improve oral health in the Hispanic community,” she said. With Hispanics in Chicago “almost a third of the population,” Dr. Semprum said, that provides a “great opportunity to work with the Hispanic community in need. Hispanic patients can feel more comfortable with a dental professional who shares his/her culture and language. I assist students on finding opportunities for service in the community.” Dr. Semprum helped establish a partnership between the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Esperanza Health Centers and the HSDA to conduct monthly oral health education and application of fluoride varnish for an average of 15 families one Saturday a month. The UIC team also provides referrals to other oral health providers. “With this partnership we were able to significantly increase the percentage of children having a dental visit by the 24th month of life,” Dr. Semprum said. Jacqueline Magallanes, president of the College’s HSDA, nominated Dr. Semprum whom, Magallanes said, “goes above and beyond by mentoring HSDA members in advocating for the oral and general health of underserved Hispanic communities in Chicago through volunteer work with Esperanza. “Dr. Semprum is always willing to find an answer to a

question or solution to a problem for students, and always has time to meet with you one on one,” Magallanes said. “She inspires the members of HSDA to reach back to our needy communities and be the voice of the underserved.” “I promote advocacy for our students,” Dr. Semprum said. “I am always available. I am in contact with students every day and I think about myself as a role model for Hispanics and non-Hispanic students. I help them improve their performance with a good learning environment and help them overcome their challenges. Internationally Renowned Researcher Dr. Lyndon F. Cooper to Serve as Associate Dean for Research, Head of Oral Biology

Dr. Lyndon F. Cooper, Program Director of Advanced Prosthodontics and Stallings Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina, will become Associate Dean for Research and Head of the Department of Oral Biology at the College in November. October 2015

“Dr. Cooper has one of the strongest international reputations for innovation, perspective, and patientoriented research and clinical care in the world,” said Dean Clark Stanford. “He has led an innovative team in translational research evaluating the role of a variety of pro- and anti-inflammatory bio-markers as well as innovative medical device designs to create researchoriented clinical solutions for relevant patient care.” As Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Cooper hopes to facilitate sustained and increased research activity among the faculty, students, and staff through departmental, College, and University-wide outreach. “I hope to encourage an academic culture that places innovation and discovery at the highest levels,” Dr. Cooper said. “I envision that the current successes represented by our exiting grant activities, the remarkable laboratory renovations, and the strong combined degree programs will all be elevated through a process of pan-departmental engagement and joint activities that target shared research goals.” As Head of Oral Biology, Dr. Cooper hopes to maintain a well-organized faculty and curriculum that elevates the level of basic science education within the existing clinical program. “My duty is to support our faculty in their efforts to provide the best possible basic science education in dentistry,” Dr. Cooper said. “We will listen to the students and faculty and continue to manage, update, and revise a curriculum that is a template for educational excellence in dentistry.” As an independent investigator, Dr. Cooper will work to be a successful collaborator among basic scientists at UIC. “I hope my enthusiasm for translational research will be a spark to others and that together we can fan that into a translational research fire,” he said. “I hope that enhancing research Dr. Lyndon F. For example, music is very interesting to me in terms of how it is possible to form sound into such varied creations.” He also is interested in cars. “I’ve often threatened my family that I can give all this up and become a Porsche mechanic, an F1 mechanic, or a world class automobile restoration specialist,” he said. A runner, Dr. Cooper also enjoys biking vacations with his wife, kayaking, and swimming. Dr. Cooper is pleased that his new roles “allow me to be part of the large discussion regarding the future of the dental profession,” he said. “I would like to see that the UIC research mission remains healthy and expands, that it becomes recognized for being tightly woven into the educational fabric of undergraduate and graduate dental education, and that UIC represents a model of dental professionalism,” Dr. Cooper said. “As a dedicated clinician I know this can and must be done without sacrifice to clinical education and diminution of our capacity to care for the community in which we live,” he concluded. After earning his DDS from New York University, Dr. Cooper completed a PhD from the University of Rochester and earned a Prosthodontics certificate from the Eastman Dental Center there, and completed a research Fellowship at the National Institute of Dental Research in Bethesda, MD. He is board-certified by the American Board of Prosthodontics and is a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists.

Dr. Michael D. Harner in Charge of Finance, Administration

Dr. Michael D. Harner has moved from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford to the College of Dentistry, where he has taken on the role of Associate Dean for Finance and Administration. “My responsibilities encompass looking after the finances and other administrative functions of the College of Dentistry,” Dr. Harner explained. “My direct reports include Human Resources, Finance, and InformaDr. Michael D. plan to also work closely with all units and departments in creating and monitoring fiscal issues and operations of the educational and clinical activities.” Dr. Harner noted that he will work to “support the missions of education, research, and community service of the College,” he said. “In the current fiscal environment it will be necessary to work with people throughout the College in order to work within fiscal constraints of State funding and explore research and clinical opportunities to enhance funding.” Previously Director of Financial Affairs for the U of I College of Medicine at Rockford, Dr. Harner is the former Chief Financial officer for Shappert Engineering Co. of Rockford. He also previously worked in financial positions for Boeke & Associates, Rhenberg Jacobson Manufacturing, Colorgraphics, Miller Transportation, and McGladrey & Pullen. He earned a BA in Business Administration and Accounting from the University of Iowa, an MBA from Rockford College, an MA in International Relations from Boston University, and a Doctor of Education degree in Adult and Higher Education from Northern Illinois University. Dr. Harner and his wife, Eileen, have been married 32 years. They have three adult children: Ben, 29; Kathryn, 27; and Erin, 24. When he has the time, Dr. Harner likes to read fiction, non-fiction, and literature concerning learning in the workplace. He also likes to exercise, doing “marathons and triathlons, and I swim, bike, and run every week,” Dr. Harner said. “I am currently training for the Marine Corps Marathon in October in Washington, DC.” Dr. Harner noted that he is “really happy to be here. Everyone has been very welcoming and willing to help me learn about all of the great things that are taking place at the College. I look forward to coming to work every day and learning more about why, what, and how we get things done, while hoping to collaborate to improve things where appropriate.”

Christopher Bevel is Director of Digital Marketing and Research Programs

Christopher Bevel, MBA, has joined the College as Director of Digital Marketing and Research Programs. Bevel directs the College’s digital marketing communications and graduate and research training programs and provides direction in the oversight of the Dean’s Office’s administrative and operational functions. He also provides strategic direction for the development of the College of Dentistry brand, ensures brand alignment of digital communications throughout the College, and manages support services for the development of blogs and use of other digital and social media. “I’m very excited to get started on some very ambitious projects for the College, including a complete redesign of our website to make it more modern and user-friendly,” Bevel said. “I’m so happy to be working

Bevel is married to Katie Suda, who holds a parttime appointment as Postdoctoral Research Associate Professor in the UIC College of Pharmacy’s Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomic Research, and she is a Research Health Scientist for the federal Department of Veterans Affairs. He comes to the College after having been a Pediatric Dentistry resident at the University of Washington in Seattle. Previously, Dr. Marion had completed a General Practice residency program at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx in New York City. He earned his DDS from the University of the Pacific’s Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco, CA, in 2012, where he received the Charles, Charles Jr., and Joe Sweet Pediatric Dentistry Award and the San Francisco Dental Society Ethics Award. A Bay Area native, Dr. Marion noted he is “a big sports fan. I enjoy basketball, football, and soccer. I spend a lot of time with books as well—science fiction being a personal favorite,” he said. “I am excited to be a part of UIC, and I look forward to working with everyone,” Dr. Marion concluded. In an effort to improve clinical operations, Valerie Kuhl, Dental Assistant III, now has an expanded role. “The duties and responsibilities of my new position are to perform on-site clinic inspections to ensure that the College is in complete compliance with published infection control policies and procedures,” Kuhl said. “This includes written reports following each clinic inspection, submitted to the clinic manager and to Dr. Susan Rowan,” Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. “My goal is for the College of Dentistry to be fully compliant with infection control policies,” Kuhl said.

Dr. Ian W. She has been with the College since May of 2013. She serves as a member of the College’s Staff Advisory Committee as the representative for the College’s Dental Assistants. “Since I’ve been at the College many staff, faculty, and administrators have encouraged and helped me to advance in my duties and position at the College,” Kuhl concluded. “I am thankful for their support.”

Free Early Childhood Caries and Dental Trauma Lecture Set

The College and the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation will host a free lecture for dental professionals and dental students covering “Early Childhood Caries and Dental Trauma.” 10

Attendees will earn four Continuing Education Credits. The lecture will be Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the College. Breakfast and refreshments will be included. College Participates in Girls 4 Sciences Event

The College’s Division for Prevention and Public Health Sciences in summer participated in a dental health education session for the youth organization Girls 4 Science. Girls 4 Science is a non-profit organization that addresses the lack of accessible quality science programs for female youth in the Chicagoland area. The organization’s leadership believes science exposure and increased scientific literacy will equip young women to confidently pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Volunteers from the College provided studies and information to Girls 4 Science. careers. The program was created by a mother whose daughter expressed an interest in a career in science. This summer module focused on health education. The College of Dentistry contributed to the health module by providing a lesson plan with information about oral health education, how the oral cavity affects the overall health of the body, careers in dentistry, and applying to dental schools. The two-hour session was led by volunteer UIC dental students and held simultaneously at three college campuses—Olive-Harvey College in Chicago,

Egyptian Researcher Dr. Mohammed Elnagar is Visiting Scholar in Orthodontics

Dr. Mohammed Elnagar, an Assistant Lecturer of Orthodontics at Tanta University in Tanta, Egypt, is a Visiting Scholar performing a Research Fellowship at the College’s Department of Orthodontics that will last from one to two years.

“My research is focused on skeletal anchorage by bone plates for maxillary protraction in Class III patients with maxillary deficiency,” he said. “In primary results, bone plate anchorage has showed a better outcome than other appliances, achieving greater skeletal changes with less displacement of the dentition. “Bone plate-anchored maxillary protraction could decrease the need for orthognathic surgery for severe cases and for patients who missed early treatment,” Dr. Elnagar continued. “The resulting improvement of facial esthetics in teenagers—instead of postponing a surgical approach until completion of growth— may have a favorable psychosocial effect.” Dr. Elnagar wanted to come to the College’s Department of Orthodontics because it “is considered one of the best departments all over the world in research, teaching, and patient care,” he said. “The department has very good facilities, and faculty and lecturers who provide a great opportunity for learning and sharing. Dr. Carla Evans, the Department Head, is doing an amazing effort to continually improve the department. I would like to thank her for giving me the opportunity, supervising my research, and providing continuous help and support.” October 2015

He also has been pleased by the University. “I like the warm and friendly environment in UIC,” Dr. Elnagar said. “You can feel that UIC is a big family.” Besides his research, Dr. Elnagar is lecturing, “and I participate in almost all the scientific activities” of the department, he said. He also is enjoying Chicago, which he called “an amazing city—an active city full of festivals, events, and exhibitions. I really like it.” Dr. Elnagar graduated from the Tanta University College of Dentistry at the top of his class, and he earned his Master’s Degree in Orthodontics from Tanta as well. South Korean Scholar Visiting Pediatric Dentistry for a Year

Dr. Seunghoon Yoo, a Visiting Research Scholar from South Korea, will be spending his sabbatical year with the Department of Pediatric Dentistry as an observer. Dr. Yoo earned his DDS and his MS from Dankook University College of Dentistry, Cheonan, Republic of Korea. His Master’s Thesis was entitled, “The Study of the Microleakage of the Restoration with Self Etching Priming/ Bonding Agent.” In 2010, he earned his PhD from Seoul National Dr. Seunghoon Yoo with his wife, Miyoung Lim, and children Sophia, Jihyeon, and University, Gangwon. College of Dentistry, Seoul, Republic of Korea, with his dissertation entitled, “Microleakage Analysis using MicroCT of Composite Resin Restoration after Aging Treatment.” He currently holds a position as Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry in the School of Dentistry, Dankook University, where he has held appointments since 2003. He is also a member of the Korean Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Korean Association for Disability and Oral Health. “Dr. Yoo will be observing in our clinics and with the Residency program throughout the 2015-16 academic year,” said Dr. Marcio da Fonseca, Department Head.

“Professor Kitae Park in Korea suggested to me that I visit UIC, and Dr. da Fonseca accepted my visit,” Dr. Yoo said. “Personally, the UIC Department of Pediatric Dentistry is meaningful to me because one of my professors, Dr. Yong-Kee Kim, was trained here 35 years ago, and afterwards, many Korean pediatric dentists have trained at and visited UIC.” Dr. Yoo brought his wife, Miyoung Lim, and three children, Sophia, Jihyeon, and Sangwon to the United States with him for his year at the College.

Players from the Chicago Bliss women’s professional Legends Football League team, including Dr. Allison Alberts, a Prosthodontics Postgrad, are featured in a new television show, Pretty. Strong., on the Oxygen network. The show premieres Tuesday, Oct. 6. Incoming D1 students Madison Allen and Andrew Bertagna have been named Schour Scholars for 2015. Schour Scholars are named in honor of Dr. Isaac Schour, who was Dean of the College of Dentistry from 1956 to 1964. Dr. Schour was an eminent anatomical scientist, and was known for his dedication to encouraging students and faculty in research. Stipends for the Schour Scholars have been provided by a generous alumni benefactor, Dr. Seymour Gottlieb, who Joseph Powers, D-2 President; Dr. was a student Priscilla Chang; and Matthew Bernard, under D-2 Vice President. Dr. Jasmine (Daye) Dillard read the citation on behalf of the Residents. Dr. Dillard said in reading the citation: “It is with great pleasure that I present the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of the graduating class of 2015. This individual, like many others, has dedicated her life to education. She exemplifies poise, grace, and elegance. Her passion to teach is evident every time she comes into the clinic. She even came out of “retirement” to continue doing what she loves to do, which shows us her dedication to the profession. We admire her level of confidence, knowledge and love for pediatric dentistry and for that we say thank you. I aspire to be half of the woman and educator which she is and with that, I present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Fadavi.”
