She also received an outstanding leadership award from the college. University of Idaho helped her balance it all. “The campus is very military friendly,” Avery said. “The professors were always flexible. They understood I had a huge commitment outside of my studies.” Now stationed in Germany, Avery continues to learn and achieve. She is in a platoon leader in the 709th Military Police Battalion at her current duty station—and she’s continuing her studies through the College of Natural Resources’ online master’s degree program.

When Josh Moore left the U.S. Marine Corps, he set out to find a career where he could work outside and apply the skills he learned during his service. He found that perfect mix at University of Idaho studying natural resources conservation. “All the classes have been really fantastic,” he said. “The degree program gave me a lot of flexibility. It’s allowed me to develop broad knowledge of a lot of different conservation management issues.” As a student, he started an internship as a fisheries technician at the Lower Granite Dam, just southwest of Pullman on the Snake River—and after graduation he was hired full-time.
