Don’t go to Canada And other misunderstandings about love Evelien De Vlieger • Inspired by the life of De Vlieger’s grandfather • The story of the growing pains of a 17-year-old, intertwined with the tragic love story of almost a century ago Don’t go to Canada is the story of Klaar and her grandfather. It’s the story of growing up, or choosing not to. The story of a bet with a friend about learning how to type in a weekend, about a peeping neighbour, about a wild night with a stranger and a cat, about the time of your life and what to do when that time has past. The seventeen-year-old Klaar takes care of the cat of her grandparents when they are off on a trip for the weekend. She has made a bet with a boy, Peer, about being able to learn herself how to type with her ten fingers in one weekend. If she fails the test, Peer can do with her whatever he likes. Here’s what she intends to do: train on her grandparents’ old typewriter, all weekend. But then she finds an old notebook in her grandfather’s handwriting, and

starts to read about his adventures in Canada, in 1929. Several people keep distracting her: Bilal, a construction worker who is giving her the eye, a peeping neighbour, the cat, her own growling belly. She finds out that her grandfather is on the run for something he’s done, and gradually she gets to know what really happened in Canada and why he came back. A woman is involved, his great love, who drowned before his eyes. Her own love for Peer is slowly dawning on her, and when she fails the typing test, nothing stands in the way of their getting together. Or does there? Evelien De Vlieger writes books for young and older children: picture books, informative books and novels. She has been awarded with a ‘Boekenwelp’ for Joe and Pigeon.
