The World Book of Love Leo Bormans • A record of worldwide scientific research on love • Full of practical advice • Science presented in an appealing, accessible manner The World Book of Love will take you to the heart of romantic love. What do we know about love? Despite cultural differences, love itself has always existed. It is universal and can take many forms. It is an extremely powerful emotional state. But we all know that the fire doesn’t burn forever. After the worldwide success of The World Book of Happiness, editor in chief Leo Bormans has spent two years studying the international scientific research on love. He succeeded in engaging the most brilliant scientists and unexpected newcomers to describe in their own words what we finally know about love. No butterflies and sunsets. In this book, 100 researchers from 50 different countries share what we know about attachment, passion and commitment; about jealousy, abuse and pressure; from Darwin to science fiction; from hidden secrets to open sex. They explain the system and unveil the mystery. In a global and rapidly changing world

we can all learn from each other. From Asia to America, Europe and Africa. You can find more information on www.theworldbookoflove.com Leo Bormans is a journalist, writer and public speaker. The World Book of Hope Leo Bormans • A record of worldwide scientific research on hope • Including a selection of ten of the world’s most hopeful projects • Full of inspiring examples After the worldwide success of The World Book of Happiness and The World Book of Love, author Leo Bormans has spent two years studying the scientific research on hope and meeting the most prominent experts in the field. Hope is not a luxury of the privileged few. It represents a universal psychological resource that can be found in all corners of the world. Hope is all of this: a tool for envisioning definable goals, a coping resource, an expression of trust and openness as well as a spiritual gift earned by faith or ritual. In the course of a lifetime every individual is apt to experience these different shades of hope. The World Book of Hope is an inspiring quest to the breadth and depth of hope. It offers a universal framework for understanding and using the most powerful tool of mankind: hope. Without hope there is no life. In this book, 100 professional researchers from all over the world share what we know about hope. Not spiritual philosophy but evidence-based knowledge

of recent experiments and life-long research, set in a language everybody understands. This book unveils the secret power of hope in love and relationships, study and work, health and illness, education and care, freedom and prison, management and leadership, therapy and economy, youth and old age. It even shows how we can make pessimism work and how we can benefit from post-traumatic growth: one door closes, one door opens. Leo Bormans is a journalist, writer and public speaker. How to Become Einstein or Da Vinci?

An introduction to science for tomorrow’s homo universalis Metaforum • Written in an accessible way, by subject • High-level knowledge by renowned specialists in their fields • All subjects are approached from different angles, so that you’ll get the whole picture Almost daily, scientists announce important discoveries on the news. While the one researcher says he found a medicine which should help to eradicate a deadly disease, another researcher announces that he dropped a robot on Mars by making use of a remotely controlled spaceship. The more knowledge scientists gather, the less you’re able to see the big picture. You may find research into stem cells interesting, but you don’t know exactly what its impact is on your personal life. At the same time, you don’t quite get how an architect is trying to diminish social inequality, by designing a city project.

Thanks to How to become Einstein or Da Vinci? the big scientific questions are easily digestible for everyone. In an understandable and illuminating way, more than 50 inspired lecturers of the University of Leuven talk about a wide variety of subjects: ranging from the mysterious expansion of the universe and the determination by the brain and genes, to the creation of life on the basis of DNA. Do you really want to become a homo universalis? This book is the perfect place to start! Metaforum is an interdisciplinary think tank of the University of Leuven, in which study groups brainstorm about important social questions.

The Book of Breastfeeding An honest book about the dos and don’ts of breastfeeding Martine Boonen & Eva Boonen • Facts and fables about breastfeeding • Accessible book with beautiful and practical illustrations • Exceptional testimonials and advice from experts Most mums start breastfeeding in good spirits and with high expectations. However, some of them come across unexpected difficulties, lose courage and become disheartened. Being well-informed and prepared is crucial to making breastfeeding a success, because a great number of difficulties can easily be avoided or overcome. This book aims to provide mothers with honest and practical information so that they can make wellinformed choices and embark on a pleasant breastfeeding journey. What is the best way to nurse your baby? How do you know if your baby is drinking? How do you avoid sore nipples and breast infections? What can you do if you do get a breast infection? What is the best way to pump breast milk, and how can you store it? Aside from giving answers to these (and more) questions, this book also contains fun

recipes, interesting trivia, funny anecdotes and touching stories. Experienced mums Eva and Martine Boonen know all too well the problems that breastfeeding mums have to deal with. Seven years ago, Eva and Martine won the Belgian TV show De bedenkers (The creators) with their revolutionary invention: a breastfeeding bra both functional and elegant. Since then, the bra has already been sold in ten countries. In the Netherlands, the bra was honoured with the Baby Innovation Award, the Oscars of the baby business.

The mindfulness theory has become increasingly influential and successful in recent years. Its supporters believe that to acquire a more balanced psyche, it is essential to be aware of one’s thoughts and sensations. Instead of trying to reach distant goals, mindful people should approach life from a position in the present. This will allow them to deal with the problems of life in a peaceful manner.

Life on the Sidelines Erik De Soir • A meditative approach to trauma and loss • Includes a CD with exercises • Contains testimonials from, among others, psychiatrists and experience experts For many years now, trauma psychologist Erik De Soir has been helping people who have ended up on the sidelines of life as a result of a great loss or trauma. Experience has taught him that meditation can be an enriching addition to the more traditional types of grief therapy. By means of 18 meditations, based on core concepts such as serenity, simplicity, perseverance and honesty, Erik De Soir demonstrates in this inspiring book that dealing with loss and trauma can be done in many different ways.

‘Traumatic events and losses tear you away from the continuity of life and suspend the connection with others. I’ve written this book to help people living on the sidelines re-establish the connection with the world around them.’ – Erik De Soir Trauma psychologist Erik De Soir offers psychological care and guidance to victims of traffic accidents, collective emergencies and situations of war, among others to the bereaved of the bus disaster in Sierre. He has previously written Redders in nood (Rescuers in need), a basic guidebook for professional social workers.

The Trial Against Wilhelm II Hans Andriessen, Paul Mevis & Willem Sinninghe Damsté • An interesting and original book about WW I which will cause a great deal of controversy • Well-founded indictment, plea and sentence with a link to rich (online) source material • Counterfactual ‘what if’-historiography is on the rise The Allied Powers never got the chance to call the emperor to account for starting a world war and a series of other charges. Nearly 100 years later the trial is being held in this book. For eight years, a team of young historians and lawyers tackled the question of how the planned trial against Wilhelm II (William II) would have unfolded if the Netherlands had extradited him after WW I. The book does not only offer historic insight into the dynamics of WW I and investigates the criminal culpability of the emperor, but also returns to the origin of international jurisdiction.

Hans Andriessen is the author of De Eerste Wereldoorlog in foto’s (World War I in Photographs), of which 400,000 copies were sold in 13 languages. He is the founder of the Stichting Studiecentrum Eerste Wereldoorlog (Foundation Study Centre World War I). Paul Mevis is a criminal law professor at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Willem Sinninghe Damsté is a lawyer and writer. The contributing judges are Jan Reijntjes, Ruud Rosingh and Marijke van de Vrugt.

Belgians Make Bombs Dirk Musschoot • The captivating story of how Belgian refugees contributed to the war • Well-documented with original photographs • Includes first-person texts and stories of descendants to make the book even more poignant When in 1915 the British have insufficient ammunition to supply their troops, the shell scandal becomes a reality. There are just not enough factories and labourers to meet the demand. At the same time, one million and a half Belgians are on the run. Approximately 250,000 of them find refuge in Great Britain. Many of them decide to contribute to Great Britain’s fight by becoming a factory worker and making bombs. In Birtley, Northern England, they even build a new ammunition factory with a fenced-off camp: Elisabethville. There, from 1916 until 1919, four thousand Belgian refugees and rejected soldiers, some accompanied by wife and children, will make bombs.

‘For the first time since its inception, the factory in Birtley has produced more than 20,000 grenades in one week’s time (...). I am convinced that we will further improve on this result thanks to the stamina, competence and patriotism of our workers.’ – factory director Hubert Debauche in a telegram to minister De Broqueville Dirk Musschoot is known for his original research of interesting historical subjects, such as the fate of the passengers of the Titanic. As with his other books, he went straight to the source in search of compelling stories: he travelled to Birtley multiple times and interviewed a large number of descendants.

Never before has a pope been so popular. In his written texts and spoken words, Francis dreams of an authentic type of faith and a world filled with solidarity. Because of this, his quotes often begin with the words, ‘How beautiful would it be...’

Tom Zwaenepoel has a PhD in Germanic languages. He is affiliated with the universities of Ghent and Bayreuth. He specializes in the Vatican and popedom. Lannoo has published his previous works The Small Encyclopaedia of the Vatican, Who Believes Is Never Alone, In All Simplicity and The Voice of Silence.

With his ‘revolution of tenderness’ he longs for a courageous and trustworthy Church. A Church that has the will return to the essence of faith. He dreams of a fair world that battles war, poverty, hatred and indifference. The foundations of Francis’ dream home are familiar pillars: faith, love and hope. The overarching theme is mercy and charity, notions to which he has dedicated the year 2016.

Unequal but Fair

Why our society is more unequal than you fear, but fairer than you hope Marc De Vos • This book is the answer to T. Piketty’s famous Capital in the 21st century and fundamentally challenges the world view of the pervasive anti-inequality movement in politics, media, and the academic world • Unique in its blending of history, philosophy, economics, sociology, and demography, offering a compelling 360° degree understanding of inequality • Paints the picture of inequality across the whole Western world, pinning down cross-country trends that will surprise many Inequality has gotten very bad press recently. In America and all over Europe, growing inequality has been labeled the key societal question of our time. World-wide bestsellers depict an era of ever-growing polarization undermining the very essence of our economies and democracies. This book offers a welcome antidote to these prophesies of doom. It defends good inequality as the by-product of merit and success that does benefit all, however unequally. It explains how globalization, technology, demography, and family structures combine to boost human potential, and therefore deepen inequality, to unprecedented levels. It argues how decades of equal opportunity politics are forming a natural societal elite, with economic superstars at the very top. Its message is both comforting and disturbing.

Much of today’s inequality lament is really about the triumph of talent that met opportunity. At the same time, inequality has very deep and personal roots in our increasingly diverse societies, making it extremely hard to tackle. The book warns against ‘soak the rich’ populism that will do more harm than good. It offers a bold agenda for active promotion of new opportunities instead. Marc De Vos is a professor at Ghent University Law School and the director of the Brussels-based thinktank Itinera. A leading public intellectual, he has published and lectured widely and internationally. A syndicated columnist, he has written for the Wall Street Journal Europe and has published several books, including After the Meltdown: The Future of Capitalism and Globalization in the Age of the Twin Crises.

Everyone a Racist

An analysis of the dream of multiculturalism Alain Van Hiel • Accessible analysis of a controversial subject • Based upon years of scientific research • Contains balanced and critical findings, steers clear of partisan statements Human beings are creatures of habit and of small groups. We meet with one another in our own circle of friends and find a partner there, but often ignore or disregard members of other population groups. We like to think of ourselves as broad-minded, but naturally speaking we can’t help thinking in terms of ‘Us’ and ‘Them’. How can we recognize these mechanisms in ourselves, in small groups as well as in society as a whole? This book lays bare the basic mechanisms of racism and intolerance, but also formulates ways of recognizing and resisting these mechanisms and of realizing change.

“As soon as someone comes up with the unholy idea of describing or classifying social groups, it is inevitable for discrimination to occur sooner or later.” – Alain Van Hiel Alain Van Hiel is a professor in Social Psychology at the University of Ghent and annually teaches his course to nearly 2000 students from a variety of educational backgrounds.

When Digital Becomes Human Customer relations in transformation Steven Van Belleghem • Our world has gone digital, so must customer relations • However, merely digitalizing customer relations will not be enough • Companies that manage to combine a digital approach with a human one, will be tomorrow’s winners Our world is turning more digital every day, and costumer relations need to adapt to the evolution. Digital customer relations are necessary for the survival of a company, but relying on these alone will not be enough: digitalization will become a commodity in the long run. The difference will be made by the human touch. The authors stress the importance of keeping sight of the human factor and to keep it prominent when deciding on and developing an effective digital strategy. When Digital Becomes Human does exactly this. It is a book about the extreme digitalization of customer relations, but it focuses on the human touch as the differentiating factor, because companies who manage to make the difference with a ‘human touch’ will win the hearts of their customers.

When Digital Becomes Human was awarded the STIMA 2015 Marketing Book of the Year Prize. Steven Van Belleghem is an expert in customer focus in a digital world, an entrepreneur and a professor in Marketing at the Vlerick Business School. He is a popular speaker at home and abroad. He is the author of three books (The Conversation Manager, The Conversation Company and When Digital Becomes Human), which have sold over 75,000 copies. He spent the first 12 years of his career as a consultant and managing partner of the innovative market research company InSites Consulting and is now a partner in and co-founder of several companies.

The Jihad Caravan A journey to the roots of hatred Montasser AlDe’emeh & Pieter Stockmans • Leading international jihad expert on the origins of radicalisation • Based on both thorough academic research and personal experience • Full of clear recommendations for policymakers This title interweaves the gripping story of Belgium’s most famous expert on jihad with sharp insights into Muslim radicalisation and Islamophobia. The Jihad Caravan tells both a social and a personal story. Jihad researcher Montasser AlDe’emeh himself was once, as an uprooted problem youngster, about to leave Belgium to join the armed conflict in the Middle East. Instead, he decided to study the mechanisms that make Western Muslims radicalize and tried to understand the sources of the hate that make youngsters turn to violence. For the book, he spoke to Belgian ISIS fighters in Syria and travelled along with Middle East expert Pieter Stockmans to his Jordanian hometown of Zarqa, the birthplace of the international jihad. They also researched the hate and fear dynamics in Europe.

The result is a compelling read which offers ideas on how to create an integrated society, without fear of a clash of civilizations. AlDe’emeh has become a popular interview partner of late for those wanting to know why Belgium is losing its youth to the jihad. There is likely no other academic in Belgium who is closer to the scene than he is. – Der Spiegel Montasser AlDe’emeh is an Islamic scholar who researches Islamic radicalisation and international jihad. He is an internationally recognized jihad expert and is regularly interviewed on the topic (e.g. The New Yorker and Der Spiegel). He co-authored the best-seller The Jihad Caravan. Pieter Stockmans is a journalist and has been travelling around the Arab world for 10 years now. His main focus is the radicalisation of fighting groups in the Middle East.

My Rescue from Evil

The story of a young woman and the call of ISIS Montasser AlDe’emeh & Intisar Umm Mansur • An in-depth portrait of a Muslim woman who turned her back on ISIS ideology • Muslim women supporting the caliphate are an underexposed problem • This sequel to The Jihad Caravan is a unique example of counter-propaganda ‘I want to know where it went wrong in my life. I want to rescue myself from the ideology that’s rooted so deeply in myself.’ With these words, Intisar Umm Mansur asked the help of renowned jihad expert Montasser AlDe’emeh. The attacks in Paris had given her second thoughts about her radical ideas, which had driven her to Sharia4Belgium and even almost to Syria. This important book finally sheds some light on the women that support the ISIS caliphate. A quarter of the Belgian fighters in Syria are female. Intisar Umm Mansur – a pseudonym – almost became one of them, but de-radicalized with the help of AlDe’emeh.

A hopeful and enlightening case of counter-propaganda. Liefde

Een onmogelijk verlangen?

In his new book, Belgian bestselling author Dirk De Wachter sets out to search for the vulnerability of the human soul. No longer confined to discussions in psychiatric contexts, our mental wellbeing is receiving more and more attention in our society. In this society, with all its modern conveniences, we somehow feel detached, lonely and useless. But is it really us who have a problem? Or is it our society as a whole that is in trouble?

Dirk De Wachter is a psychiatrist / psychotherapist and head of System and Family Therapy at the Academic Psychiatric Centre of the KU Leuven, campus Kortenberg. He is an instructor and supervisor in family therapy in several centers in Belgium and abroad.

The World of De Wachter targets the big issues our world is facing: terrorism, climate change, the refugee crisis ... In between, it takes on the digital challenges of today while looking for an answer to one question: how can we find ourselves in this world gone mad?

The Post Book 500 years of post history Vincent Schouberechts • In 2016, we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of the European postal service • A mix of history and philately with the Thurn and Tassis families at the centre • Contains never-before-seen documents from museums and private collections For the European postal service 1516 was a double landmark year: the Thurn and Tassis families were granted the monopoly on international post for the first time ever, and in the UK, the Royal Mail was founded. The 500th anniversary presents the ideal occasion for an exceptional book about the postal history, from delivering the post on horseback to the rise of the steam train and the birth of the stamp. Thanks to Schouberechts’ contacts with top collectors and museums, The Post Book contains historical documents such as the letter in which Emperor Charles V confirmed the lucrative monopoly, beautiful maps with old postal routes, and unique correspondence of Peter Stuyvesant as governor of New

Amsterdam (New York). That all makes this book a supremely interesting history book as well. The international edition (English-French) will be launched at the prestigious World Stamp Show in New York at the end of May. Vincent Schouberechts (1965) is a professional philatelist and the author of several acclaimed books on postal history. He is an expert on the pioneering Thurn & Taxis family and on horse post. Schouberechts is a fellow of The Royal Philatelic Society Londen and a member of the Association Internationale des Journalistes Philatéliques.

Maria Sibylla Merian Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium Dr. Marieke van Delft & drs. Hans Mulder et al. • Unique, full-sized facsimile of one of the most beautiful books in history • With 60 magnificent full-page illustrations of insects and the original scientific description • Republication with an extensive introduction on the eve of the 300th anniversary (January 13, 2017) of an exceptional woman’s passing Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium (published in 1705) was the work of a very enterprising and independent woman, Maria Sybilla Merian. In 1699, she travelled to Suriname to do research on the reproduction and development of insects. Nowadays, she is seen as a very gifted artist, but also as an empiric scientist who was one of the first people to firmly dismiss the common idea of the spontaneous regeneration of insects out of soil. Her life and work have been and are still being internationally researched by botanists, entomologists and historians who deal with the history of science, art, religion and economy. Scientific publications on her and her oeuvre are plentiful. Countless exhibits have been dedicated to her work and novels or poems have been written about her. Originally of German descent, she emigrated to the Netherlands but nevertheless graced the 500 German mark bill until the transition to the euro.

The facsimile is preceded by a number of essays in Dutch and English which shine a light on Merian’s life, complete oeuvre and the era she lived in. The original texts have been translated into English, and these translations have been added at the end of the book, followed by an index of plant, animal and insect names. This title is edited by two curators of natural history collections: dr. Marieke van Delft (Royal Liberary of Brussels) and drs. Hans Mulder (Artis Library). Arts historian dr. Ella Reitsman has written a biographical introduction in collaboration with drs. Hans Mulder. Dr. Kay Etheridge, professor in Biology at the Gettysburg College (Pennsylvania) discusses Merian’s legacy in the field of biology and dr. Bert van de Roemer (University of Antwerp) elaborates on Merian in her era. British author and Merian expert Redmond O’Hanlon wrote the preface.

The Lee Harvey Oswald Files Why JFK had to be killed Flip De Mey

English edition available

• The long-expected sequel to best-seller Cold Case Kennedy • A thrilling read • Includes materials and sources, which have never been published before Did Lee Harvey Oswald even kill JFK? Jurist and author Flip de Mey gives the answer in the sequel to his pioneering best-seller Cold Case Kennedy. The conclusion is bewildering.

Flip De Mey started his career as a lawyer, but took extra training to become a forensic accounting auditor, specialized in unravelling fraud and irregularities in companies.

With the same meticulousness he used to prove that Kennedy was the victim of a conspiracy, De Mey now focuses on the role of Lee Harvey Oswald. He dove into the files, spoke to two lifelong friends of Lee Harvey Oswald, and managed to get his hands on unique pictures of the rifle that was used to kill JFK.

His expertise, experience and specific method for analysing complex matters gave him the perfect tools to investigate JFK’s murder, which he is passionate about.

His conclusion leaves no room for interpretation: Oswald was not the perpetrator of the most famous murder of the 20th century. De Mey suggests that the CIA, amongst others, may have been behind JFK’s murder, as the Agency felt threatened by Kennedy’s policy.

Written Testimonies of the Holocaust Alain Goldschläger • The authors suggest five key ways on how to best approach the written testimonies that try to say the unspeakable • With an analysis of works of art, music, films and photographs which help to understand the different types of testimonies • A compelling book that highlights the importance of survivors’ literature A book that comes at the right time. By now, the voices of Holocaust survivors have become a murmur and Holocaust oral history is at an end. Therefore, future enquiries will center on written testimonies of the Shoah. This book brings back to life the depth and richness of the written memories, and explores new avenues for a clear and thoughtful understanding of the survivors’ experiences. It embraces publications from 1933 to 2012 and guides the reader in appreciating all the variations in the narratives of victims. Written in clear and precise but never pedantic language, it would be an ideal reference book for the public at large as well as for university students wishing a more profound understanding of the human side of the Holocaust.

‘Goldschläger, based on a sample of some 3,000 books, has been able to construct a coherent and penetrating narrative that illuminates the nature and significance of survivor literature through a comprehensive re-examination’ - Steven T. Katz, Slater Professor of Jewish and Holocaust Studies, Boston University; Academic Adviser to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Alain Goldschläger studied at the universities of Brussels and Toronto. He teaches French and Holocaust literature at the University of Western Ontario, where he is the director of a research centre for Holocaust literature.

The Last Minute The passing of a philosopher Johan Temmerman • The Last Minute is a cross between a literary novel and a philosophical essay • Flawless in language and insights • It explores the concept of death, the ultimate philosophical topic I don’t remember anything of the beginning. After the end, I won’t remember anything either. I will have gone from nothing to nothing. This is my life story. Just like man goes from nothing to nothing, I do too. Still, life – however short – has been useful. Life isn’t nothing. It’s a moment...

Johan Temmerman first worked as a taxi driver and a fruit picker in Australia. After that, he studied Philosophy and received his doctor’s degree with a study into the common ground between Philosophy and Theology. He teaches Philosophy, and has published De onderstroom van religie en atheïsme.

The Last Minute tells the story of an 80-year-old professor’s last moments. He reflects on the moments that have determined his existence, and re-experiences their intensity. The professor’s death had been announced several months before, when he was studying antique texts in an attempt to find the essence of life. The last text he studied, was the Apocalypse of St. John. With death just around the corner, he interprets this text about the end of the world as a powerful description of dying and death. The novel tells how life is one great cycle of consciousness.

Son in the Congo Search for a father M.M.Montis • Nuanced and historically accurate documented drama set in the dark history of life on the colonial rubber plantations • One of the rare fiction books about Belgium’s colonial past in the Congo, but it’s a story that is also relevant for the history of Great Britain, Scandinavia, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Greece and Germany, as they constituted half of the colonials • Beautiful metaphoric image of a maturing son and the search for his father, and fatherhood in general, in contrast to the background of a colonial country that has to deal with King Leopold II’s ‘paternity’ Despite the fact that he lives in an orphanage, Elias’ future looks fairly good. Until his mother comes for him. At first, he is over the moon. Then it turns out that his ill mother would rather have an extra breadwinner than a son. His mother’s last words turn his world upside down: a hint about who his father is. In the chaos of the strike near the docks in Antwerp, he meets August: a seemingly funny, but mysterious colonial who takes Elias to the Congo to work

for a rubber company. It’s only on the boat that Elias realizes why he agreed to August’s proposal. In the Congo, he finds out that truth and lies are not that far apart and that truth wears many faces. M.M.Montis teaches writing in Flanders, South Africa and Suriname. She has 15 young adult novels to her name; Son in the Congo is her first novel for adults, for which she received a writing scholarship from the Flanders Literature Fund.
