Mister Cookie writes a book: Old Grandpa Waterman Lorraine Francis illustrations by Pieter Gaudesaboos • A new book in the Mister Cookie writes a book series • By acclaimed illustrator Pieter Gaudesaboos • A heart-warming tale about growing old Old Grandpa Waterman is looking for a job, but it’s not easy when you’re as old as he is. “Oh dear... He trudged past the bakery where the baker was already at work. Perhaps I can help him, Old Grandpa Waterman thought. I love cookies and cakes. “When I was a child”, he said to the baker, “I always helped my mother when she baked cakes.” His efforts to help the baker also end in disaster. The oven goes up in fl ames. Then it turns out that there is one thing that Grandpa Waterman is good at: putting out fi res!

The story of creation, rewritten especially for children Poetic writing style: crystal-clear prose With vibrant, colourful illustrations
And then something remarkable happened: Something bumped into Something Else. Something mumbled something. And Something Else mumbled something back. After mumble after mumble and gesture after gesture they started to understand each other better. After a while it even sounded as if they had known each other for a very long time.
Geert De Kockere worked as a journalist for De Standaard and Het Nieuwsblad. He has written more than 75 books for kids, young adults and adults. Inge Bogaerts works as a freelance illustrator for various magazines and publishers, such as Weekend Knack, Okkie and BoekieBoekie. In 2008 she won the Dutch Art Award.

Eleven grandmothers and grandfathers… I thought that was quite enough. At school we’re learning about family trees. And that requires the filling out of forms. I need more, I told my teacher. A whole pile! If I lay them all out next to each other, I’ll have a forest. Then I can swing from tree to tree, like a monkey.
Sabien Clement studied illustration and graphic design at the Sint Lucas instituut in Antwerp. Her work has already been awarded the ‘Boekenpauw’ and the ‘Gouden Uil’.

Karel Duck is in love Mattias De Leeuw • First part of a new series about Karel Duck, a funny, new character • Gift book from a young up-and-coming talent • Full of sweet, funny and cute rhymes Karel Duck only wants one thing: true love. But how do you go about something like that? Karel Duck thinks to himself. ‘I’ll just make my own sweetheart.’ He hammers and tinkers… and slowly but surely his sweetheart starts to take shape. Will Karel fi nally fall in love? REQUEST I am a very special duckling Really, there is only one like me I dance, I sing I laugh and spring On one leg if you think it’s necessary You see, I am truly exceptional Far from conventional I swim and walk I quack, my call Is the loudest of any on the entire channel And yes, I am also gorgeous So with hunters I must be cautious I have two rather nicely toned buttocks Everyone will be licking their chops When I arrive on the scene both daring and decorous
Moreover I am smart, handsome, funny and fine Always modest, without design Always happy, never depressed For that will make you love me less Although, I am faced with a single problem That I am none of these things to anyone else Hence this request At the start of this text: Who wants to be my sweetheart? The source of promising young Flemish illustrators has apparently not yet dried up. – De Standaard, on his debut De Steltenloper/ The Stilt-Walker. Mattias De Leeuw studied illustration design at Sint Lucas in Antwerp. Birdie Laure Van den Broeck • An unusual crossover novel, told from teenage and adult perspectives • A story built on intriguing characters, brimming with humour and suspense Beatrice Munday, nicknamed Birdie, is fi fteen and quietly struggling with the absence of her father. She lives alone with her mother Felicity in a seaport on England’s south coast. Felicity had Birdie at a very young age, and being impulsive, irresponsible and obsessed with her looks, she sometimes seems less mature than her shy, withdrawn daughter. Moreover, she has a sneaky lover with whom she is secretly planning to start a new life in Spain. Worried about her daughter’s reaction, she hasn’t found the courage to tell Birdie about any of it. A sudden hiccup from Felicity’s past throws things into a jumble: on the island where she grew up, her father has passed away.
The day of the funeral comes around, and Birdie, Felicity, her estranged sister Alice and Felicity’s lover set out to make the pilgrimage to the island. Tensions start to broil, slumbering emotions stir awake and a massive storm whips things to a head... Birdie opens doors for teenage readers that generally stay shut, and displays a depth of psychology that is unusual on YA-shelves. From the very beginning to the end, a small cast of intriguing characters sweep the reader along in a tale of inarticulate fi rst love, fundamental loneliness, with a great deal of miscommunications along the way. Laure Van den Broeck won a ‘Boekenwelp’ (the runner-up of the ‘Boekenleeuw’, the award for Best Children’s Book in Flanders) for her fi rst YA-novel, The Seventeenth Summer of Maurice Hamster. She lives in Southampton, UK, where she works part-time at October Books, an independent co-operative bookshop.
