What the Doctor Doesn't See (Yet)

Gain a complete picture of your health and take back

control

Everyone knows the typical doctor's visit: you arrive with a complaint, symptoms are analyzed, and based on this snapshot, a treatment is proposed. But what if your symptoms are not the real issue but merely signals of a much deeper-rooted problem?

As an osteopath for top athletes, Thomas D’havé began applying a different approach. For each physical or mental complaint, he creates a comprehensive timeline, including not only the triggering factors (a fall, bacterial infection, etc.) but also risk factors (diet, biorhythm, movement, stress, etc.) and exacerbating factors. He then applies lifestyle interventions aimed at improving vitality and resilience in the long term.

With this book, you can start working with this groundbreaking kPNI (clinical psycho-neuro-immunology) method yourself. You will create your own health timeline step by step and learn about (self-) healing interventions such as intermittent living, anti-inflammatory nutrition, and breathing techniques. Whether you are an elite athlete, an entrepreneur looking to enhance performance, a patient managing a chronic illness, or a student dealing with extreme exam stress: this guide will help you regain control over your own body and health.

Thomas D’havé is a health expert and osteopath and also the founder of kPNI Belgium and WOLV. He is also a sought-after expert in the media.

Why Our Fat Isn't the Enemy

170 x 240 mm | 208 pages 50,000 words

A surprising new perspective on the most common medical issue of our time

What we really know about losing weight, gaining weight, and everything in between

Written in an accessible style with relatable practical examples and evocative anecdotes

Why Our Fat Isn't the Enemy

The science behind our most misunderstood organ

We curse it, we hide it, we fight it, and we mock it. Yet, we rarely make a genuine effort to understand it or to treat it like any other part of our body.

Fat is not just a lump of weight. It is an organ that works intensively with our genes and hormones. Moreover, it is an extremely dynamic organ that defends itself when disturbed, often resulting in even more fat cells.

In this book, obesity surgeon Prof. Dr. Van Nieuwenhove reveals the surprising science behind our fat. He explains the mechanisms that make us crave food and consequently gain weight. He also explores the history of how this organ has been influenced by famines and diet cultures. Furthermore, he delves into the fascinating connections between our body fat and our fertility, mood, aging process, sleep, and immunity.

Prof. Dr. Yves Van Nieuwenhove studied at the VUB, where he trained as a gastrointestinal surgeon. He is currently the head of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at UZ Gent, specializing in weight-loss surgeries. Van Nieuwenhove is also (co) author of over 100 scientific publications on topics such as obesity, esophageal cancer, and recovery post-surgery. He is a sought-after expert in the media on obesity.

Tackling Your Fatigue

After covid, cancer, and chronic conditions

After covid, cancer treatment, and in the case of significant chronic conditions, fatigue is a common complaint. Only as a last resort, most practitioners tend to recommend lying down to rest. Based on the belief that those suffering from fatigue will only make matters worse by doing so, treatments often focus more on building physical fitness instead.

Healthcare psychologist Annemarieke Fleming knows from both her practice and personal experience that lying down or even taking short naps during the day can be crucial in rebuilding energy reserves. In Tackling Your Fatigue, she offers a practical, scientifically-based method and explains in clear terms why the body benefits from daytime rest. Not only will you gain a better understanding of fatigue, but the book also provides the recognition that is often lacking in both medical and personal circles.

Digitally, we are closely connected, but outside of that, more and more people seem to be losing connection with each other. According to psychologist Marissa van der Sluis, this lack of meaningful connections leads to loneliness, restlessness, and feelings of emptiness. By building walls around us or fleeing, we ignore our feelings, resulting in even more disconnection.

With a touch of humor and relatable examples, Marissa helps her readers better understand themselves and others. Drawing on her psychological expertise, she offers practical tools to achieve greater connection.

Swinging to the Rhythm of People with Dementia

Better communication with the Resonance Method

In this book, researcher Kasper Bormans emphasizes the importance of connection, highlighting that human interaction is the best medicine.

When we think that people with dementia are unreachable, we lose the motivation to engage with them. The first step is to recognize that the person is on a swing, and that you can play a meaningful role. By attuning to the other’s rhythm - sometimes close, sometimes distant - we can connect with them and give them a supportive nudge. Communication as resonance.

This book offers hope and inspiration for everyone who cares for the elderly, specifically for people with dementia. It provides practical tips and insights that can be directly applied in daily caregiving practices.

Dr. Kasper Bormans earned his PhD in 2020 under the renowned psychiatrist Dirk De Wachter (KULeuven). Affiliated with Maastricht University, he conducts intergenerational research on the role of connection and imagination in communication with the elderly and people with dementia. He gives lectures and workshops, organizes exhibitions, and designs practical modules for caregivers. For this book, he spent several months living in a nursing home.

The New World Book of Happiness

Wars, the climate, inflation, poverty and loneliness make people feel insecure. In these troubled times, there is more interest than ever for what is truly important in life: happiness, hope and love.

What does science teach us today? Are we still allowed to strive towards happiness? And how do we do that? Leo Bormans asked the same question over and over again to a hundred professors all over the world: established names and young up-and-comers. Every scientist briefly summarises their recent research after which they formulate their insights in one single sentence: the essence. To this they link at least three concrete pieces of advice: for our own lives, for our friends and for society.

Leo Bormans travels around the world as an Ambassador of Happiness & Quality of Life. He is a researcher, keynote speaker, author and editor-in-chief of The World Book of Happiness (first published in 2010) and The World Book of Hope (2015). He is a Distinguished Lecturer of Happiness Research at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam.

Gentle Nights

For parents who don’t want sleep training, but do want better nights

Written by two experienced sleep coaches with a strong scientific background in child development

Full of practical tips and tools to support your baby’s natural sleep development

Gentle Nights

A revolutionary book to support the natural sleep development of your baby and toddler

Is your baby not sleeping as the books say? Congratulations, your baby is completely normal!

There is nothing natural about a baby sleeping alone, in a different room, through the night. Does this mean you should just accept sleepless nights? Absolutely not. In fact, by letting go of unrealistic expectations and adapting to your child’s rhythm, you can create a healthy sleep environment that benefits both you and your baby.

In this groundbreaking book, sleep experts Hanne Wils and Anouk Van Nuffel debunk persistent myths about baby sleep. They provide countless tools to gently and supportively guide your child's natural sleep development. The result? Happy babies and well-rested parents!

We expect so much from babies: for instance, that they sleep through the night quickly, even though that’s not the biological norm at all, but rather a socially imposed ideal. Such persistent misunderstandings make many parents feel very uncertain. Thankfully, this much-needed book finally shows what normal baby sleep really looks like.

Why does one person believe that money is there to be spent while another prefers to save as much as possible? Why does one person treat themselves to a delicious latte every day, while another chooses to invest the same money? Why does one person always experience stress when it comes to money, while the other almost never does?

The answer is that everyone is a different money type! Each person is a combination of eight money types, with the first three forming your money personality. By understanding your money type, you can recognise your own financial patterns, break free of your fears and become aware of your financial beliefs.

Charlotte is the first author to focus on the softer side of money, as real money problems often have psychological rather than numerical origins. Chips

How digital technology changes the world

In the 1960s, a computer filled an entire room. Today, a multifold of that computing power is contained in devices that are so small that they can disappear into our environment or into our bodies. We have the astonishing advances in chip technology to thank for that. From your smartphone or car to ChatGPT or brain implant: just about everything runs on microchips.

Not only have they become indispensable in the electronic devices we use every day, but they also form the basis for innovation in many emerging sectors. 1.15 trillion chips are shipped annually, or about 145 for every person on earth.

Its increasing strategic importance has also set a lot in motion on the world political stage. Anyone who really wants to understand technological, economic and geopolitical developments must understand the key role chip technology plays.

Jan Rabaey is an emeritus professor at UC Berkeley and Chief Technology Officer System-Technology-Cooptimization at Imec. Rabaey has made important breakthroughs in research into chip technology and mobile devices, for which he has received several awards and honorary doctorates. Why a pineapple belongs on the table and a smartphone does not

Etiquette is more important than ever. Treating people with attention and respect never goes out of fashion. In The Art of Etiquette you read ‘how you are supposed to act’ in certain situations, but also discover the stories or history behind these rules. What does Louis XIV have to do with the fact that we keep our hands above the table during dinner?

This book immerses the reader in the wonderous world of etiquette and looks for the origin of those rules, a must-read book to handle every situation elegantly and politely.

Essential science, now finally in layman's terms

The real story behind arguably the biggest scientific revolution of the last century

Frank Verstraete is professor of Quantum Physics at the University of Cambridge

Why Nobody Understands Quantum

and yet everyone should know something about it

Music, literature, movies and history; everyone can appreciate their value. It makes humans human. But who knows why matter is hard? Why the properties of an object are determined by the way we look at it? Why grass is green (also on the other side)? Why 1+1 can be both more and less than two? Why earth does not wither into a black hole?

An answer to these questions came 100 years ago with the discovery of quantum physics, the most abstract and counterintuitive scientific theory ever – but also the most controversial.

In this book a seasoned quantum physicist and a gifted storyteller –husband and wife in real life – give everyone insight in this seemingly incomprehensible theory. They go for a stroll through the history of physics, and the phenomena that lend colour to the world and make the sun shine. They pause at the most important insights that form the basis of our modern technology, and the people who uncovered the countless mysteries of the world. By now, it is impossible to imagine our lives without quantum physics. This ode to quantum compiles everything everyone should know about it.

The Flexible Brain

130 x 200 mm | 176 pages 50,000 words paperback all rights available

A unique perspective from an expert in the field

An overview of the latest research on underlying mechanisms, models, and experimental methods

For anyone curious about why children learn new skills more easily than adults

The Flexible Brain

The science behind brain plasticity

Our brain has an incredible ability to adapt to changing environments. While not always at the same pace, we do continue learning throughout our lives, and impressive recoveries are possible even after severe brain damage. However, this immense adaptability isn’t always beneficial. The mechanisms behind tinnitus, chronic pain, and phantom pain illustrate how the brain can sometimes develop undesirable patterns, leading to persistent symptoms and discomfort.

In this book, Emilie Cardon explores both the great potential and the drawbacks of our ever-changing brain.

During her training as a musician, Emilie Cardon became fascinated by the way we listen. A subsequent PhD in neuroscience gave her the opportunity to analyze how our brains interpret the soundscape around us.

Worries of the Mind Understanding neurodiversity in 33 questions

Terms such as ADHD, ADD, high sensitivity and autism are often used as definitive labels, failing to do justice to the massive variety and complexity of these diagnoses. This leads to widespread problems in treatment, education and therapy, and can have a devastating impact on the confidence and self-worth of individuals.

The key for a better approach is to start from a different perspective, abandoning the perspective of disorder towards one of neurodiversity, as a different way of looking at the world, always in a unique context of development and environment. We all have our own development. If we can map out how this works out differently for everyone, we’ll get a better understanding of how our brain works, and particularly of how we can make room for resilience, support and a higher sense of self-worth for those involved.

Plea for a broad change in mentality and societal evolution

What does the way we look at common complaints like burnout and chronic fatigue say about our society?

Renews the attention for old wisdoms and values

The Stressed Society

Why we have everything yet still get sick

Hundreds of thousands of people suffer from chronic fatigue, pain and other bodily and psychological symptoms without doctors being able to diagnose why, or what they can do about it. It seems like many people quickly burn through the resilience that was supposed to last them a lifetime and that our body is telling us that maybe humankind wasn’t made for the 21st century. Why is it like that? Why do so many people get overburdened?

The Stressed Society looks for the broad societal tendencies that raise the pressure on people. An answer to this: focus the attention onto our bodies as a signaller of overburdening.

Stephan Claes is a professor of psychiatry at the KU Leuven, and a psychiatrist at the University Psychiatric Centre of KU Leuven. He is a chairman of the research group Psychiatry and leads the Mind Body research group, studying stress as a central theme.

The Dinosaur Revolution

Dinosaurs broke all the records in the animal kingdom. They were the longest and tallest, the fastest, the most heavily armored, and they had the largest teeth and claws. The fact that these impressive animals roamed the earth for millions of years continues to capture the imagination. Gijs Rademaker and Maarten van Rossem traveled together through Canada and the United States, where they visited excavation sites and met with experts. In British, German, and Dutch museums, they examined unique skeletons and spoke with leading dinosaur scientists.

The world-famous Tyrannosaurus rex did not stalk its prey with a loud roar, but silently. The long-necked Diplodocus had air sacs throughout its body. The feathered Velociraptor was no bigger than a turkey. Although dinosaurs come in unique shapes and sizes, they are not the terrifying monsters they are often portrayed as, but rather ordinary animals with their own place in evolution.

exemplaren gevonden.

Einiosaurus Als er één dier bewijst dat niet alle hoorns voor verdediging zijn gemaakt, is het Einiosaurus wel. Eini betekent ‘buffel’ in de taal van de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Montana, de Blackfoot. Hoorns boven de oogkassen had het beest nauwelijks, maar wel een flinke neushoorn. Alleen was die op een vreemde manier naar voren gebogen, in een hoek van zo’n dertig graden, als was hij gesmolten of verwelkt in de volle zon. Voor de functie van deze hangende hoorn heeft nog niemand een verklaring gevonden. Einiosaurus heeft ook rechte hoorns: twee spitse, ranke antennes helemaal boven op zijn nekkraag. Als die geen versierfunctie hebben? Er hangen nog net geen vlaggetjes aan. {afb. 3.12} Chasmosaurus Weer een ander (ver) familielid van Triceratops is Chasmosaurus (‘kloof-o-saurus’: chasma is Oudgrieks voor ‘kloof’ of ‘opening’). De naam verwijst naar twee gigantische gaten of ‘kloven’ in het schild. Alleen de omlijsting is van bot Het Oertijdmuseum in Boxtel heeft een exemplaar staan waarbij je uitstekend kunt zien hoe breekbaar het schild is. Chasmosaurus is niet het enige familielid met zulke gaten, er zijn er veel meer. De gaten waren aan de buitenkant niet te zien, ze waren waarschijnlijk bedekt met spieren en kraakbeen. Dit is het ultieme bewijs dat nekschilden geen grote rol speelden als bepantsering: het schild van een Chasmosaurus kan natuurlijk op geen enkele manier bedoeld zijn om klappen te weerstaan. Maar met bijvoorbeeld felle kleuren en vlekken erop, zou het zeker roofdieren hebben kunnen afschrikken. Of hij zou er rivalen mee kunnen imponeren en vrouwtjes verleiden. {afb. 3.13}

Tales of Nature

All life on earth is interconnected. The extinction of one single species has consequences for many others. That interconnectedness makes life on earth vulnerable, also human life.

By means of historical drawings but also through examples from contemporary art, nineteen experts tell stories about the great stress on nature and the role of people in it. It is an extraordinary book that shows how in the grand, overwhelming nature, humans are only a small cog, but one whose actions have far-reaching consequences; for humans themselves as well as many other species.

Hans Mulder is a historian and works as a conservationist of natural history at the Allard Pierson, the collections of the University of Amsterdam.

Gie Goris

India

The invisible giant

Asia dominates the 21st century and yet nobody in Europe seems to pay attention to India. Yet the world's largest democracy, which recently surpassed even China in terms of population, is becoming crucial to stable global politics, the global economy and tackling global environmental and climate challenges.

India sees itself as a guru to the world, but domestically there are plenty of issues. Authoritarian Hindu nationalism under Prime Minister Narendra Modi threatens to silence media, minorities and opposition. Age-old inequalities thwart the future dreams of its 400 million young people. India expert Gie Goris convincingly demonstrates that India has arrived on the global stage. The world can no longer ignore it.

India is not becoming a world power, it already is one. What does that mean for the world?

This book gives the necessary interpretation to better understand the country's strengths and flaws

This ambitious book provides much-needed insight into the country, its people and its leaders. Because to understand India is also to know our own future.

Gie Goris was active in global journalism for more than three decades, first as editorin-chief of Wereldwijd, then as editor-in-chief of MO*. His areas of expertise: culture and religion in the context of conflict and human development, interculturalism and globalisation, and the rise of the Global South. He is specialised in Asia (from Afghanistan to India, from Iran to Indonesia).
