#areyoumarked The question arises with the creation of every book. Which tendencies are ‘striking’ on paper? What ‘deserves’ to be eternalised in a book? What are the voices shaping today’s fashion, design and architecture? Which artist names are rolling off the tongues in the galleries? Which photographers have their finger on the pulse of our times and dare to leave the trodden paths? What kind of book is a true pleasure to give, to your partner, to a friend, to yourself? In the world of Marked we take you on a journey through the printed universe of the most beautiful books. Marked books, carefully selected by hand. Curated by the best authors and artists, designed by the most outstanding graphic designers. But Marked also stands for a community of people like you, who are enthralled by beauty. Looking for the pearls. We are glad to hand them to you. Irene Schampaert and Iris De Feijter selected the world’s most compelling brutalist interiors. Concrete, wood, steel: raw, yet elegant, just like their makers. Athos Burez already seduces with his photography, but into these interiors selected by Thijs Demeulemeester, you can project yourself as James Bond or Emanuelle. Chique. Erotique. Break through The Sweetest Taboos with Frieke Janssens’ aesthetic photography or lose yourself in Henk van Rensbergen’s No Man’s Land, a book of new work that both amazes and disorientates, presenting a world without people, or hope. Then again, hope and the search for a new life are the central themes in Carl De Keyzer’s Higher Ground. Apocalyptic, mystical, literally, a Higher Purpose. That quest returns in Tim Dirven’s imaginary journey from north to south to that place, somewhere, far away, where the carcass of life is all that remains standing. The contrast with the sublimely glamorous portraits of international stars like Rihanna by Annie Leibovitz couldn’t be sharper. And to conclude, discover the designs of some of Belgium’s finest of fashion: Dries Van Noten, Martin Margiela, Olivier Theyskens. Mastery with a big ‘M’. The M of Marked. Are you Marked?

RAW INTERIORS AND RUGGED MAKERS Slick or soft? These interiors are as hard as a rock and as tough as they come. Solid houses with a polished look, and a generous portion of poetry and patina. Imagine: raw materials, such as bare bricks, rusty metal, weathered plasterwork, discarded materials and concrete. The imperfect and aesthetic interior designs radiate a warm atmosphere. Get acquainted with the artisans in this book too, each of them with a passion for metal, wood or ceramics.

INTERIORS OF SEDUCTION Thijs Demeulemeester on Erotique Chique Erotique Chique is a sexy interior design book. An architectural peepshow, filled with alluring film stills. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, modernism experienced several glamorous excesses. Not only in Los Angeles, Hollywood or Palm Springs, but also in Europe, architects designed houses that appeal to the erotic imagination. Sunken lounge rooms, indoor swimming pools, groovy carpeting, satin wall cladding, dance stages: these are the interiors you would normally only see in movies. And yet they still exist. You cannot visit them, in contrast to the classical glamarchitecture by John Lautner or Bruce Goff in the States. This book is vintage architecture porn: a sneak peek in private gems, for your eyes only. “Why do bad guys always get the best houses?” This film quote might just as easily have been the book’s subtitle. Because in these houses, you picture a wild night rather than a cosy Easter brunch. These houses are film sets rather than homes. In houses like this, you are less a resident than you are a character in your own script. You become an extra in the film you could be making there.

That is exactly what we did in Erotique Chique. Photographer Athos Burez unleashed his cinematic fantasy on the sexy architecture. The result is not a series of cool architectural images à la Julius Shulman, but rather, tantalizing film stills. They make you wonder what happened – in private – behind these doors. Erotique Chique is James Bond meets Serge Gainsbourg. ‘2001: A Space Oddysey’ meets Bilitis. Bad Guy meets Bad Taste. Or just call it architectural lingerie: just subtle enough to still be seductive, exactly the right amount of lure to get in the mood. Your place or mine?

DRIES VAN NOTEN’S LEGACY His fascination with professional skill, his designs, characteristic shapes and gift for combining unique prints and colors are the trademarks of his signature. 10 years after the first book achieved cult status, collections 51 to 100 of the famous Belgian fashion house are now also presented in a wonderfully illustrated and luxuriously designed book. Together, the reissue of Dries Van Noten 0 -50, and Dries Van Noten 51 – 100 capture Van Noten’s continuously evolving, yet always coherent, aesthetic vision.

TIMELESSNESS AND TACTILITY Martin Margiela’s pioneering and timeless designs, made for the luxury house of Hermès between 1997 and 2003, are the stars of this book, highlighting that period in the iconic and enigmatic Belgian designer’s career. The match between Hermès, the epitome of French luxury, and Maison Martin Margiela’s deconstruction generated an earthquake in the fashion landscape that is still being felt to this day. Innovations in tailoring, technique and materials, as well as a new vision of fashion with an emphasis on comfort, timelessness and tactility, created clothing with the primary aim of pleasing the wearer, not impressing the spectator. An image of women was also introduced that was no longer obsessed with youth, but made room for women of different ages, thus generating an alternative vision of beauty. This key period of 20th and 21st century fashion is evoked through interviews with Margiela’s closest collaborators, more extensive essays by Rebecca Arnold, Kaat Debo and Sarah Mower, and a foreword by Suzy Menkes. Previously unpublished material from the Maison Martin Margiela archives, numerous striking and exquisitely refined images from Le Monde d’Hermès, as well as new photographic material tell the story of Margiela’s supreme wardrobe for Hermès.

TIM DIRVEN’S JOURNEY FROM NORTH TO SOUTH Tim Dirven has been capturing iconic images for over 20 years. He defines his collected works as Karkas (carcass), because it centralizes the architecture of man and animal, defining the essence of bodily existence. When everything has been eaten, the carcass is all that is left behind: the last witness. Similarly, this book is a search for the essence of existence. Dirven portrays no-nonsense people hardened by life, who are trying to find balance in an often insecure religious, cultural, political and ecological context.

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES This is a book about discovery. About curiosity and adventure. About exploration and new trade routes. It’s also about far-away civilizations and their exotic fauna and flora. But first and foremost, it is a book about knowledge, proven as well as invented. Wunderkammer. An exotic time travel is a brave hunt for souvenirs on paper. An exciting and boyish adventure tale, for hunters and collectors. These exotica collections show the best and the most beautiful aspects of nature, from ostrich eggs to narwhal tusks. They demonstrate the best that mankind can do with nature. Stuffing and mounting animals for example, until it becomes impossible to see what is human and what is animal. Empiricism versus mother nature: does a plant even exist if it has never been given a scientific name? And what if a blacksmith creates elegant cutlery out of a rare shell: who is the actual artist? Do we acknowledge creation’s inventiveness? Or do we try and outshine nature? That is the silent struggle within this collection of exotica: who is the greatest artist of the universe: nature or mankind? Who imitates whom? And who is fooling whom?

AMERICAN MASTER Annie Leibovitz: Portraits 2005 – 2016 is the iconic photographer’s follow-up to her two iconic books, A Photographer’s Life 1990 – 2005 and Annie Leibovitz 1970 – 1990. In this newest collection, Leibovitz has captured the world’s most compelling subjects in the style that has distinguished her as one of the most loved and influential talents of our time. The photographs document contemporary culture with an artist’s eye, wit, and uncanny ability to personalize even the most recognizable and iconic figures. “I realized recently that a great deal of work had accumulated since 2005. History takes over when you do this for so long. I wanted to stop and take a look and make a new book, and I knew what the end of the book would be. It would end with a portrait of Hillary Clinton in the White House. I planned my shoot with her. I spent a lot of time imagining what desk Hillary would choose to be her desk in the Oval Office. Was one of Eleanor Roosevelt’s desks available? Then Hillary lost. My imagined ending, which was really an extension of something, or a beginning, belonged to a view of the world that had been rather dramatically shattered. The years 2005–2016 now seemed like a discrete era. They were the years when Barack Obama held high public office, as a senator and then as president. And I guess you could say they were years when the culture was shifting in ways that we didn’t quite take in. I wasn’t thinking about any of that when I decided to do the book. I just wanted to assess what my work looked like.”

SUBDUED TENSION In Moments Before the Flood, Carl De Keyzer portrayed a Europe on the cusp of drowning, flooded due to climate change. In Higher Ground, the flood has already passed. His images show people that have fled to the high mountains, depicting a fictional world of tomorrow. A large portion of the work is irony, but it bears an uncomfortably close resemblance to scientific predictions of the future.

THE SWEETEST TABOO Frieke Janssens sheds a new light on taboo. By evoking subjects that are considered improper or unacceptable, Frieke strips these taboos of their immoral connotation. She actively explores the threshold where taboo transforms from immoral vulgarity into aesthetic sophistication.
Why this book? I consider it an exposition on paper. In a book, my work can be shown to full advantage. On top of that, a book offers the opportunity to reach a different audience. Death, smoking, alcohol… : Where does your fascination with taboos come from? It is sometimes claimed that there are no taboos left. I do not agree with that statement. When I read that some countries banned The Beauty and the Beast because there is a ten second scene in which two men dance with each other, I seriously question the reactionary turn our society is taking. I want to put that message across in my work. I believe an image should be aesthetically pleasing, initially. But when you look at it for longer, you should be confronted with a second layer
which is less beautiful. I don’t want to shock just for the sake of shocking, but I do believe in having a strong message. Your photographs are very recognizable. What do you feel gives shape to your artistic signature? I believe that has to do with the way I use light. Chiaroscuro, but in a milder version. Moreover, I leave nothing to chance. The composition must be perfect before I make a print. Attention to detail is extremely important. My preparations are meticulous. Before I could start shooting the Diana-series – on single women and the hunt for a man – I collected fifty pages of research. I have to know everything there is to know on a subject before I can start shooting.

THE SCANDINAVIAN WAY The art of living life is called ‘hygge’ in Scandinavia. Enjoying the company of loved ones in a nice, cozy setting with a glass in the hand and something tasty to eat. The Nordic nation aspires to a certain quality of life that inspires many of us. Pure design, natural produce, warm interiors and living life in harmony with nature. TECHNICOLOR VEGETABLES Chef Seppe Nobels has a predilection for vegetables and greens. They inspire him, and gradually, he began to carve out a new niche for himself. At the heart of Seppe’s cooking are easy, low profile, seasonal ingredients – ordinary vegetables, and some meat, but always of exceptionally high quality. If he puts a sausage on the menu, rest assured it will be a very high end sausage, he says. “It fits a more contemporary lifestyle – people want to eat a delicious lunch but a light lunch, they are more health conscious.” Seppe surprises every time by preparing vegetables in an unexpected way, often using methods more commonly used for meat or fish. Salad is grilled and glazed like a Peking duck, root vegetables are barbequed – there is so much more to this vegetable world than boiling and steaming.
