Architects, designers & artists working with marble
The frozen natural beauty of taxidermy
The culture & future of Vanlife
Colourful living and interiors
#WishIWasHere Carefully selecting and curating a range of beautiful books for beautiful people and bringing them together under the name MARKED may not be an easy task, but it is the one we’ve taken on. The challenge we face is evaluating and deciding what is beautiful and what is not when there is no such thing as a universal taste. De gustibus et coloribus non disputandum est. That there’s no arguing about colours is refuted loud and clear by Patrick Kooiman in ‘Volume’. Followed by Iris De Feijter and Irene Schampaert who are definitely ‘not afraid of pink, orange & green’. Colour is also the bohemian-chic leitmotif in ‘Life is Ibiza’ and in the bright world of top designer Dries Van Noten. A stark contrast to the deconstruction reigning in the world of Martin Margiela. ‘Stoned’ takes us on a different ‘trip’, one that shows us marble and natural stone incorporated into interiors and architecture by some of the biggest names in the design world. Artists on the rocks, shaken, not stirred. Turkish photographer Aydin Büyüktas takes us on a pictorial roller coaster in ‘Flatland’: images that will bend your mind. We see ourselves gradually withdrawing from the hustle and bustle. Whether it’s exploring the ‘Vanlife’, simply ‘Roaming America’ or let yourself be ‘Guided by Food’ on any trip you take, we’re all looking to escape our daily routine from time to time. Abandoned is what you could call the desolate universe of the Mothmeister artist duo. Their faces covered with masks, they spin ‘Weird and Wonderful Post-Mortem Fairy Tales’ that take you on an alienating, mystical trip. This bridges the distance to the frozen-in-time, natural beauty of taxidermy. As artful as ambitious, the Darwin, Sinke en Van Tongeren duo, picked up by Damien Hirst, published their ‘First Book’. Are we as human beings indebted to nature? We certainly owe it something, if not everything. The insignificance you experience when you brave the forces of the ocean, bobbing on the swell, waiting for that one wave or ‘High Tide’, is overwhelming. ‘Surf & Stay’ is the motto of 2019. Be different. Be more ‘Unicorn’.

An interior only has meaning when you put something of yourself into it. It’s a monologue that tells where you come from through heirlooms or objects from friends and family. — Muller Van Severen
I always have the golden ratio in the back of my mind. It’s a mathematically timeless approach to beauty. I don’t use the golden ratio as a mechanical trick, but it does make my designs intuitively timeless. — Francesco Balzano

JUNGLE OF LOVE BALTIMORE – Hilton Carter
In the greener part of the city of Baltimore, near the Hampden district along the banks of the Jones Falls River, an old cotton factory from 1870 was transformed into a luxury apartment complex. Today, it is more commonly known as Cotton Mill N°1. Hilton Carter, filmmaker, producer, and an interior decorator and plant specialist in his own right, found his dream loft there. “You feel almost as if you are in the countryside, when you are actually living right in the heart of the city. That makes this place a unique location.”, Hilton says. Though it may look like a jungle, he did not place any of these plants at random. “I see a plant in the house as a design element,” Hilton continues, “and especially with bigger specimens, you can set the tone and make a room even more warm and inviting.

TURN UP THE VOLUME
Clear lines and sober colours. Architecture that simultaneously exudes power and Zen. That is the essence of Think New Modern.
Let Europe’s finest style experts spice up your home. In VOLUME they share their tips and tales to make sure you can have your own unique, colourful home as the reflection of your life story. We asked Patrick Kooiman, curator of VOLUME and author and photographer of Interiorator.com, about his own 3 ultimate pieces of advice to turn up the volume in your interior! 1 Tell your story. The best interiors tell a coherent story – they have a concept. The moment your guests set foot in your home, they should see exactly what you are trying to say. 2 Mix it up. It’s all about context and contrast. Old and new, rough and smooth, don’t be afraid to clash different styles. 3 Turn up the volume. Ignore trends, stop visiting Pinterest. Your home should be about YOU as a loud and proud individual. Your home can be colourful, sophisticated and tell a kick-ass story.

POST-MORTEM FAIRY TALES Mothmeister: the non-stop morphing alter ego of two artistic and taxidermy-obsessed soulmates. In their eerie Post-Mortem Fairy Tales, they portray a series of masked, grotesque characters – often accompanied by startling stuffed animals and a variety of curiosa from their private collection.
Where does your passion for taxidermy come from? Even though taxidermy is still very controversial we believe it’s a respectful art, giving dead animals a second life, we’ve been collecting them for more than 25 years now. We take it a little step further and treat them as fairy-tale-like characters by dressing them up and creating this surreal post-mortem fairy tale like universe. For us, it’s a homage. With a little twist that is. And where does the fascination for the masks finds its origin? Since childhood, we’ve both been fascinated by myths, legends, and fairy tales where animals possess human characteristics. We’re intrigued by masks used in ancient rituals, religious cult celebrations, pest-control protection and carnivals. The transformation into our alter ego Mothmeister naturally grew through the years simultaneously with our exploding collection of taxidermy, masks and costumes. Where do you get your inspiration? Our unconsciousness is like a bubbling volcano, pouring vivid dreams and nightmares all over our brain. We are also influenced by some intriguing artists like Cindy Sherman, the exuberant and grotesque characters of Paul McCarthy and the wonderful and weird dioramas of Walter Potter, a 19th-century taxidermist, showcasing stuffed and dressed animals as if they were fairy tale characters.

FASCINATING AND UNIQUE GLIMPSE OF NORTH KOREA
D.P.R. Korea – Grand Tour Carl De Keyzer ISBN 9789401456111 English. € 39.99 Available
North Korea must be the most restrictive country in the world when it comes to foreign visitors or artists. Nevertheless, Carl De Keyzer managed to cross the entire country, divided into three journeys. In his latest book D.P.R. Korea - Grand Tour, De Keyzer points his lens at North Korea, officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the last communist state in the world from an ideological, political and cultural perspective.
De Keyzer is one of very few photographers who gets almost-unlimited access to the country. He photographed more than 200 different locations, many of which had never been captured on camera before. The 250 photos that form his ‘Grand Tour’ – taken on marches, at the shooting range, in the subway and in family homes – are a testament to this country’s uniqueness.

‘They push the skill of taxidermy to a level I have never seen before. I am particularly touched by the poetry of the unknown poses photography which, because of the delicate tones, I assumed to be drawings on first sight. The two artists have the rare talent to transcend the limits of what we know to reach true beauty.’ — Sacha Walckhoff, Creative Director of Christian Lacroix

When you say Ibiza, you say sun, sea and the Mediterranean way of life. But, you also say gorgeous design, funky interiors, scrumptious food and breathtaking nature. The hype never ends, and rightly so. ‘Life is Ibiza’ will bring the summer vibe into your home with the most beautiful interiors, imposing architecture and pictures that will have you imagine you are standing amidst the azure bays yourself.
Carmen Straatsma, Interior Designer, has been living on Ibiza since 2008, in San Mateo.
What’s your story? How did you end up in Ibiza? After a close friend of mine bought a small house in the countryside, I went to visit him for a week. I’d known Ibiza mostly for its nightlife, but during that week I fell in love twice. First with the friend, and then with the island. What is it about the island that attracts you most? The freedom, and a sense of peacefulness, not always apparent in summer. It’s also important for me to be in touch with nature and experience the changes of rhythm that are so typical here. Personally I find it easier to really be myself here than anywhere else. There is a unbeatable quality of acceptance to the island, and I have the feeling it encourages and sometimes even pushes you to find your own way. That in combination with a lot of likeminded, non-judgemental people living here makes it the perfect place.
