Biography Karina Schaapman For three years, all day long, Karina Schaapman has been building her Mouse Mansion. This impressive art project gives the scenery for a bestselling picture book of which the stories are also written by Karina. The Mouse Mansion is made out of cardboard boxes and papier-mâché. The interior is made from authentic fabrics from the fifties, sixties and seventies and all kinds of waste material. You can actually walk around The Mouse Mansion. It measures 3 x 2 x 1 meters and counts more than a hundred rooms, alleys and outdoor spaces. The mice who live in the Mansion are also created by Karina herself.
Sam and Julia live in a spectacular world called The Mouse Mansion. Julia lives on the sixth floor - middle-back. She lives there with her mother in a tiny little room. She doesn’t have a father, brothers or sisters, and neither a grandpa or grandma. Julia is SUPER curious and VERY stubborn. She doesn’t like dull or boring things and whenever she gets bored she leaves the house and goes outside, looking for adventures together with her friend Sam. Sam lives in the middle-front of The Mouse Mansion, together with his mum, dad, brothers and sisters. He has got two grandma’s and two grandpa’s, a few aunts and an uncle. Sam is SUPER shy and a VERY good and decent boy. But when ever he is with Julia, he’s doing things he normally wouldn’t dare. The qualities Sam has too much of, Julia has too little and the other way around. But they are inseparable and best friends forever.

The Girl in the Golden Dress
The Temple Guardians
Written by Jan Paul Schutten, illustrated by Martijn van der Linden
Harriet Impey & Katie Pickwoad
Written by Katie Pickwoad, illustrated by Harriet Impey
This is Netty. She wears her finest clothes. Netty’s mother combed her hair for hours and the neighbor has put a beautiful little golden crown on her head. But why does she look so beautiful?
Once there was a boy called Shiro. Since a while he lived with his mother in the last house in the village. The little village lay there along the shore of a lake. To the east, the walls of a Daimyo’s castle towered over the village, and on the mountainside above stood a temple called Iwayaji.
For The Girl in the Golden Dress both Jan Paul Schutten and Martijn van der Linden did thorough research into the Night Watch and the living and painting in the 17th century. This pays off in a beautiful book filled with facts about the world famous civic guard and refers to several famous paintings from Rembrandt’s time. Realized in cooperation with the Rijksmuseum
A unique reconstruction of the establishment of Rembrandt’s masterpiece. Not to miss!

Shiro longed to learn bushido, the ancient art of samurai fighting. Then he could fight the dreaded Enya clan, in the castle across the lake. Fear of the Enya clan hung over the village, for they were known to be jealous of the beautiful lands of Lord Amago. Shiro loved to climb and explore and made wooden swords to practise on his own. But most of all he wanted to make some friends. One day, half the village, it seemed was going up the mountain. They were on their way to the temple. An old lady told Shiro that the Emperor sent two guardians which were brought to their place at the temple. They would stand at the gate and watch for danger. Taller than man, and strong, thus the old lady said. He squeezed through the crowd towards the procession. The villages were carrying enormous parcels wrapped in straw. Eventually they reached the top of the mountain path. The group stopped and put down their burdens. Two men pulled off the straw coverings. Everyone gasped with surprise… Underneath the straw were two huge statues, not real men! Their skin was painted a fierce red, their faces contorted in what looked like fury. The crowd began to murmur. ‘Foreigners’, they were muttering. The crowd was afraid of them and instead of feeling safe, they were disappointed and walked back to the village. Shiro was disappointed too. But as time passed, he visited them as often as he could. And who would have thought that these Temple Guardians would keep their promise one day and did not only guard the Temple, but also saved the whole village against evil from outside? With the help of that little boy Shiro!
The pair of temple guardian figures in the Rijksmuseum were made for the Iwayaji Temple outside the village of Yokata, in West Japan. They were probably made during the early 14th century, when the now abandoned temple flourished and was visited

ARNO! the comic album
Garden chips Written and illustrated by Grietje Huisman
Grietje Huisman (Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, 1962) began to paint when she was sixteen years old, inspired by her famous father, the Dutch painter Jopie Huisman. She started with flowers and plants, then also still-life, portraits and landscapes. In her work you always notice her close relationship with nature and her wonderment of everyday life. When a few years ago she found a photo of herself as a child with her teddy bear Bette, the idea for the children’s story Garden chips was born. With Garden chips the author wants to create a world in which her bear would feel at home. Picture book in the tradition of Beatrix Potter.
Written and illustrated by Yvonne Jagtenberg All four books about Arno are bound together and are being published as a comic album. In this book you will get to know Arno like never before. Arno is sweet, a bit shy, but at the same time courageous and brave. The stories make you smile, even laugh out loud! Welcome in Arno’s world!
Amy and Bette find a heap of potatoes in the kitchen sink, but these potatoes have some really crazy cornicles. Those are called shoots, says their father. If you put a potato into the soil, a plant comes out. And then small potatoes start growing on that plant. That’s something Amy and Bette would like to see for themselves. Off they go into the garden with their little spades to bury some potatoes. The garden gnomes are watching curiously.

Rico, the brave Sock Monkey Written by Fiona Rempt, illustrated by Noëlle Smit Rico is a monkey with extremely long arms and legs. He’s the bravest monkey in the world, because he is never afraid. Rico is born in a factory, like most cuddly toys. One day Rico is folded and put in a small dark box, but he is not afraid. After a while the box is opened and he finds himself in the middle of the jungle, full of wild (cuddly) animals. And Rico? He is not afraid. There is a moment in his life, where he feels quite alone and awkward but this picture book luckily ends well. As a duo, Fiona Rempt and Noëlle Smit created a picture books series called Super Friends, which were translated among others into German, English, Korean and Chinese.
‘Another favorite is the quiet little book from a Dutch author-illustrator duo, Fiona Rempt’s Rico the Brave Sock Monkey, illustrated by Noëlle Smit. [...] Both women are from Amsterdam and tell the story of a beloved, though once rejected, toy. [...] Smit’s fluid lines and animated characters reflect a boundless energy that makes this one… well, golden.’- Kirkus.com
