Neira briefly attended St. Mary’s University in the 1950s, but put his education on hold when he got married and started a family, Salazar told BuzzFeed News. Throughout his life he took classes here and there, but “it was never a consistent thing, until my grandma died in 2009,” she said. After that, Neira became really determined to graduate, and he went back to school this past spring.

Meet Melanie Salazar, 18, and her 82-year-old grandfather, Rene Neira. They aren’t just family — they’re classmates, too. Salazar just started her first year at Palo Alto College, where her grandpa is taking the last class he needs to get his associate’s degree in economics.

“Just last June, he watched me cross my high school stage and now I’m going to get to watch him cross the college stage,” she said. “He’s very proud of me, and I’m very proud of him.” https://www.buzzfeed.com/juliareinstein/girl-and-grandpa-going-to-college-together?utm_term=.hpk6qZ3zE#. bggMq8Yb2

Carlton helped spearhead an aggressive Nicholls Athletics marketing campaign, while personally designing and producing posters, billboards, online media and television commercials. He also maintained Nicholls Athletics’ social media outreach through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, weekly newsletters and web site content. In 2013, Carlton coached secondary and receivers, while teaching world geography and economics at Byron P. Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, where the Knights outscored opponents 434-30 on their way to a 10-0 district championship. Prior to his time at Steele, Carlton served as a graduate assistant for marketing and development at Nicholls. He managed all donations to Nicholls Athletics through the Colonel Athletic Association and various other departmental organizations and events.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – University of the Incarnate Word Athletic Director John Williams and the UIW Athletic Department announced Monday the hiring of Zachary Carlton as Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Information. “We are excited to have Zack joining our Cardinal Family. He brings the qualities and skills we need to continue the process of reclassifying into DI, and into the future,” said Williams. A native of San Antonio, Carlton returns home after spending three years as Assistant Director for Media Relations at Nicholls State University in Louisiana. At Incarnate Word, Carlton will handle all sports information elements for the university’s 23 varsity teams and also serve as video coordinator. He will oversee the Assistant Director of Sports Information, three graduate assistants and student interns in the video area. Carlton will work closely with the UIW athletics marketing department to streamline branding efforts and increase the program’s media outreach. He will also work with radio crews to continue to expand the Cardinals radio and online broadcasts. While at Nicholls, a fellow Southland Conference member, Carlton served as the Sports Information Director and primary contact for men’s basketball, baseball, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country and women’s track. Carlton also held a secondary contact role for the university’s six other Division I programs.

Before joining Nicholls, Carlton worked in various capacities for a number of political figures and organizations. He served as an assistant for U.S. Congressman Mike Conaway, was a production assistant on six political documentaries produced by Citizens United and Gingrich Productions in Washington D.C. and worked as Special Assistant to Louisiana Senator J.P. Morrell of New Orleans. Carlton played football, basketball and baseball at Samuel Clemens High School in Schertz, before continuing his football career as a quarterback at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. While at HPU, he served as Head Video Coordinator for football and men’s and women’s basketball, President of the Iota Chi Alpha fraternity and Editor of the university newspaper. Carlton is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and a graduate of Public Relations School at the Leadership Institute in Arlington, Virginia. Carlton has a bachelor’s of science degree in communications with a media and public relations emphasis from Howard Payne (2010), as well as a master’s in the art of teaching from Nicholls (2013). Son of Rick and Sharon Carlton, Zachary married his wife Lillie in May 2014. For the most up-to-date information on Incarnate Word Athletics visit uiwcardinals.com.
