Let's Talk About Money Five topics to tackle when talking to your student about the value of a dollar
Paying For College Did your student apply for college loans? Review all loan terms with your student and make sure he/she understands those terms. Encourage your student to make interest-only payments on loans with unsubsidized interest rates to get into the habit of paying for loans and minimizing the amount of interest.
Set A Clear Budget Talk to your student about tracking their daily expenses. Also, make it clear to him/her what you will and will not pay for. Putting a clear budget in place based on their spending habits may lessen their requests for cash.
Discuss The Use Of Credit Cards Building credit is important. However, building credit card debt is not. If your student has a credit card, make sure they are paying the card off monthly. It would be a good idea to schedule 'financial check-ups' with your student to ensure they are paying their bills on time.
Don't Give In To Peer Pressure Talk to your student about activities that fit within their means. If going on a summer cruise with their friends is out-of-budget, expense expectations should be addressed.
Saving For The Future Making small savings goals can be crucial for your student. Encourage him/her to start saving for their first home, car, etc. Extra money put aside is never a bad thing!

Top 3 Study Myth #1 Study abroad is too expensive. Fact: When studying abroad at a UIW sister school, students continue to pay UIW tuition. Additional costs include housing, food, airfare, insurance, books and personal expenses. The costs vary depending on the location and length of stay abroad. When studying abroad at one of UIW's study centers in Strasbourg, France or Heidelberg, Germany students pay a program fee, which is currently less than UIW tuition! We encourage students and parents to meet with the Study Abroad Office as early as possible to begin the planning process. Early planning allows families enough time to save for additional expenditures and to research alternate funding.
Myth #2 Studying abroad is all about having fun. Fact: There is no doubt that students will have lots of fun while abroad, but there is a lot more to it than that. While we do stress the study in study abroad to our students, the experience also instills in students a number of soft, or social, skills, including independence, adaptability, confidence and problem solving. While students are traveling throughout the semester, they are learning to operate in unfamiliar environments and navigate countries where they may not speak the native language. During their time abroad, students are building valuable skills that will challenge them on a personal level and have an impact on their academic and professional careers.
Abroad Myths Myth #3 Studying abroad will delay graduation. Fact: As mentioned previously, we emphasize the study in study abroad and work closely with students and their academic departments to meet their academic goals. Students work closely with their academic advisers and academic deans to select courses that adhere to their degree plans. Early planning is key! In order to ensure that students stay on track for graduation, we strongly suggest that your student visit the Study Abroad Office as early on in their academic career as possible.
