Drop-In Babysitting & The Zone The Simon Family JCC strives to help our members get the most out of their experience here! We are happy to provide complimentary babysitting to members for children ages 6 weeks – 12 years. While you enjoy your workout, younger children (ages 6 weeks – 5 year) will have fun in the Babysitting Playroom (downstairs next to the pool entrance) reading, coloring or climbing in our indoor playground under the care of our loving and experienced staff! Our littlest ones can enjoy a nap or a swing in our bouncy seats or in caring arms. Older kids (ages 6 – 12 year) will have a blast in The Zone (upstairs outside of the fitness center), which is stocked with toys, puzzles, and games. Jewish Holiday Descriptions Rosh Hashanah: The first two days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei are Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. It is also known as Yom Hadin, the Day of Judgment. Yom Kippur: Known as the Day of Atonement when each person’s future is decided, Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year. People pray and ask for forgiveness for past mistakes. It is a fast day on which Jewish people neither eat nor drink. Sukkot: The eight day Feast of Tabernacles is when temporary dwellings known as “sukkot” are built as reminders of the journey the Israelites traveled after the exodus from Egypt. Shemini Atzeret: The day of Holy Assembly, Jews gather in the synagogue to celebrate the end of the harvest season. Simchat Torah: On this joyous occasion, the cycle of the reading of the Torah is concluded and immediately begins again. Hanukkah: This is the Festival of Lights. Chanukah candles are lit every night of the holiday to recall in Temple times when one day’s supply of oil lasted eight nights.

• TWO BEWELL FITNESS SESSIONS with a Certified Personal Trainer. Get

started with a special work-out plan created just for you. This program is designed for new members or individuals looking for the best fitness workout to meet their needs. We provide two One Hour sessions. These sessions include a BeWell Fitness Assessment, Goal Setting, and a results-based Fitness and Wellness Plan. BOOTCAMP

Energetic and creative class featuring strength, speed, agility and cardio drills! Class may be performed outside, weather permitting. Meet in Studio 1.

CORE & MORE

Express class offering targeted work for your abdominals and lower back.

LIFE-FIT

Too young for Silver Sneakers? Not quite ready for the intensity of Muscle Blast? This is the class for you! Strength and cardio without being too intense.

MUSCLE BLAST

This is a total body lifting experience that improves your muscular endurance, tone and definition.

PILATES

This exercise technique tones and lengthens muscles, increases abdominal and back strength, improves posture and promotes flexibility. (Private Pilates instruction is also available. See page 8.)

SILVER SNEAKERS

These classes are specifically designed for older adults who want to improve their strength, cardiovascular fitness, balance and flexibility.

SILVER SNEAKERS YOGA

This class will move your whole body through a series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered for safety. Class designed to promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

SPINNING

This class uses a specialized stationary bike in a group setting. Focus is to improve your strength and aerobic endurance while burning lots of calories.

SPINNING/CONDITIONING 45 minutes cycle and 15 minutes conditioning off the bike.

STEP

Choreography and movement patterns offer a fun filled step aerobic workout.

STEP AND SCULPT

Mix it up with 1/2 step aerobics and 1/2 strength training. A great way to get it in one class!

TABATA

30 minutes of high intensity exercises with minimal rest promoting maximum calorie expenditure. Prepare to work hard and get the results you want! 15 minutes of core work and stretching at the end.

YOGA

Movement promoting balance, flexibility, strength, and relaxation through various poses and breathing techniques. Yoga is a class that has many styles and intensity levels.

ZUMBA

Swimming Lessons for Children

The Swim Safe Program is created around sound swimming fundamentals and promotes active learning in each class. The teaching philosophy is based on our instructors’ understanding of how to teach swimming for age appropriate levels of development. This program eases children into the water so that they feel safe and comfortable in the pool as beginners, and, as they progress, it works on their technique and form. For up to 16 children Birthday parties at the JCC give parents the opportunity to sit back and relax while their child celebrates a milestone in their young lives. Leave the planning to the JCC and your party host/hostess. Our parties are scheduled in two-hour blocks in our state-of-the art facility. The party includes one hour of celebration time in the party room and one hour of activity time. For activities you can choose from several options: a pool party, the GaGa Pit, an arts & crafts party and a gym party. All activities are tailored to the age of the birthday child. Your party package includes a party host/hostess, paper products (tablecloths, plates, cups, napkins, and utensils) for the children, a customized 1/4 sheet cake from “Custom Cake Shoppe,” candles and Goody Bags for up to 16 children. Kids Night Out Kids Night Out, the 3rd Saturday of each month, is a program especially for JCC members. Children ages 6 weeks to 12 years are invited to join us for this evening of games, crafts, snacks, swimming (for those 5 years and up with lifeguard supervision) and more. These exciting theme-filled evenings are sure to bring a smile to your child’s face. Enjoy your night out while the JCC staff provides a safe, supervised and fun environment for your child – a place where they can be active, make friends, have fun and most importantly – leave parents at home! Pre-registration is required. Due to staffing requirements, drop-offs may not be able to be accommodated the day of the event. Every 3rd Saturday of the month (09/21, 10/19, 11/16 & 12/21) 6:00 – 10:00pm | $10 per child, JCC Members only

Athletic Leagues A child plays for free if his/her parent is the head coach for the team (limit of one). Parents/guardians are required to sign a completed participant waiver form before a player may participate. League sponsorship (Your logo on every jersey) is $250. PEE WEE SOCCER For ages 3 – 6 years

This league teaches the basic techniques and skills of the game of soccer to include dribbling, passing, throw-ins, defense, and shooting. Participants practice once a week with a game each Sunday. Players must supply their own shinguards. Team jersey is included. YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Open to K-12 boys and girls of all faiths. This program will instill a fundamentally sound approach to the game while appropriately balancing participation and competition. Skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship are the goal of providing a fun and rewarding youth basketball program. Teams will practice for several weeks before the 7-week regular season, ending in a Championship Day on February 23, 2014. Basketball jersey included for each player. Caregivers and tots explore how much fun cooking can be! Enjoy a nutrition and tasting adventure together with these fun, hands-on nutrition and tasting activities that teach simple nutrition concepts, develop children’s cleanliness skills and provide a variety of cooking, baking and tasting experiences. Each child will receive an apron that they will decorate in class and then take home with them when the session is over. Our enrichment programs provide an extension of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ curriculum, helping your child grow, learn and succeed in class by introducing topics they will discuss in school. High School Programs B’NAI B’RITH YOUTH ORGANIZATION (BBYO) For grades 9 – 12

BBYO is the leading pluralistic teen movement aspiring to involve more Jewish teens in more meaningful Jewish experiences. For more than 80 years, BBYO has provided exceptional identity enrichment and leadership development experiences for hundreds of thousands of Jewish teens. Hillel is a student organization created to welcome Jewish college students in intellectual, spiritual and social growth. The Virginia Festival of Jewish Film celebrates and supports international Simon Family JCC's | 21st Annual Jewish films and filmmakers, presenting the newest and best films worldwide. The of Festival brings together community and provides entertainment and education through various film genres. Mark these dates to come and celebrate the 21st Anniversary of the Virginia Festival of Jewish Film. Opening Night takes place at the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach. Films will also be shown at the TCC Roper Performing Arts Center in Norfolk and other locations in the area.

The Simon Family JCC’s Annual Israel Festival celebrates Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day. An afternoon of fun and games for all ages including camel rides, food, unique shopping, music, games, arts and crafts, inflatable rides and much more! Free admission.

The Art Gallery showcases various Jewish artists and their work throughout the year. All exhibits are free and open to the public. A portion of the proceeds from the purchase of artwork supports the JCC’s Cultural Arts Department.

BEAR – BE A READER

The Be A Reader (BEAR) program is a literacy and mentoring project that has been helping elementary school children in the Tidewater Area learn to read for 14 years. Currently, the BEAR program is serving seven schools with more than 75 program participants at various schools in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth. BEAR volunteer mentors go to an area school for an hour each week and spend quality one-on-one time with a child who has been identified by their teacher as a candidate for literacy mentoring. Time spent with the child helps him or her learn to read; however, it gives the child so much more. BEAR offers children five books to keep, and a mentor to help them progress in their development of academic and social skills. Please contact the BEAR Coordinator, at 757-321-2338 to mentor a child or make a monetary donation to the program. Be A Reader is made possible through the generous support of Build-A-Bear, Target, First Book and many local individuals just like you!

These cards, featuring artwork by local artists, can be sent for any reason including birthdays, B’nai mitzvahs, graduations, and more! Tribute cards are processed within 24 hours of the request. Your minimum donation of $18 may be applied to any program at the JCC. JCC ANNUAL PRESIDENTS’ CUP GOLF TOURNAMENT

Each year, the Simon Family JCC hosts a golf tournament fundraiser in honor of those who have served their community as President of the JCC. We recognize that their combined leadership has allowed our center to grow and thrive for more than 60 years. We, as a community, are grateful for the time and energy that the Past Presidents have donated to the center. The portraits of our Past Presidents hang in the JCC Fitness Center hallway. The monies raised through the Presidents’ Cup Golf Tournament help the Simon Family JCC provide special services through before and after school care, summer day camp, youth sports and swim classes, exercise classes for women recovering from breast cancer, scholarships for both membership and camp, so much more. This year’s tournament will be held in June 9, 2014. Keep an eye out for more information.
