Welcome to the JCC

A Letter from the Simon Family JCC Center Director Dear Friends, I am once again excited to present the collection of the programs and classes that the Simon Family JCC will be offering this upcoming season! Whether you sign up for children’s activities or personal training for yourself, we have something for everyone. We are pleased that our swim lessons are helping children of all ages to learn to swim and be safe in the water. Also check our group fitness schedule online at www.SimonFamilyJCC. org for the latest class schedule. All of our classes and many upcoming events, such as the first of our Children’s Cultural Arts Series on October 19th and our December 25th Pancake Breakfast, are highlighted in this guide. The JCC is a place for everyone. If your child wants to play basketball, we have a league for them. If you are looking for one on one personal training instruction, we are your answer. Social and wellness programs for our seniors, we have that too. We can also boast that our full day infant and toddler care program (Beginnings) and our before and after school enrichment program (Kids Connection) are among the finest in the area. Making your gift to the JCC is easy and will help so many of your fellow community members. To learn more about making your gift and supporting our programs or scholarship funds, please contact Evan Levitt, our Development Director, at 757-321-2337 or elevitt@simonfamilyjcc.org. I am proud to present our 2014 Fall Program Guide. Peruse it and use it to learn about all that the JCC offers for you, your family, and your friends. Enjoy and see you soon!

Sincerely, Scott Katz, MSW Center Director Simon Family JCC

Jewish Holiday Descriptions Rosh Hashanah: The first two days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei are Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. It is also known as Yom Hadin, the Day of Judgment. Yom Kippur: Known as the Day of Atonement when each person’s future is decided, Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year. People pray and ask for forgiveness for past mistakes. It is a fast day on which Jewish people neither eat nor drink. Sukkot: The eight day Feast of Tabernacles is when temporary dwellings known as “sukkot” are built as reminders of the journey the Israelites traveled after the exodus from Egypt. Shemini Atzeret: The day of Holy Assembly, Jews gather in the synagogue to celebrate the end of the harvest season. Simchat Torah: On this joyous occasion, the cycle of the reading of the Torah is concluded and immediately begins again. Hanukkah: This is the Festival of Lights. Chanukah candles are lit every night of the holiday to recall in Temple times when one day’s supply of oil lasted eight nights.

Financial Assistance It is the philosophy of the JCC that no one is ever denied membership because of an inability to pay the membership dues. If there are special circumstances that require adjustments and/or special assistance, please call the Membership Director at 757-321-2338 and request a confidential interview.

“What happens to us after we die? Is our immortality the memory of us in God’s mind, or in the mind of other people?” Or do we have a more personal immortality? Are we made of body and soul, and do our souls, after the death of the body, go to heaven… or elsewhere? Are the souls rewarded or punished? BEAR – Be A Reader

The Be A Reader (BEAR) program is a literacy and mentoring project that has been helping elementary school children in the Tidewater Area learn to read for 14 years. Currently, the BEAR program is serving seven schools with more than 75 program participants at various schools in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth. BEAR volunteer mentors go to an area school for an hour each week and spend quality one-on-one time with a child who has been identified by their teacher as a candidate for literacy mentoring. Time spent with the child helps him or her learn to read; however, it gives the child so much more. BEAR offers children five books to keep, and a mentor to help them progress in their development of academic and social skills. Please contact the BEAR Coordinator at 757-321-2338 to mentor a child or make a monetary donation to the program. Be A Reader is made possible through the generous support of Build-A-Bear, Target, First Book and many local individuals just like you!

supporting jcc annual programs

Each year, the Simon Family JCC hosts a hundreds of programs which fit into four major categories: Cultural Arts, Family Programs for all Ages, Total Wellness, and Community. An unrestricted donation to the Simon Family JCC will support each of these categories equally. In addition, we want our members and valued supporters to have the opportunity to direct gifts toward the programs of their choosing. Supporting the JCC’s scholarship fund is also an excellent way to make sure anyone who wants to enjoy the JCC will have the opportunity!

Volunteer Opportunities & Support Your JCC

Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities

This fall, we look forward to our annual Book Festival as well as other Cultural Arts programs. These programs are made possible through generous support of our annual Patron of the Arts Campaign. In addition to individual contributions, the Simon Family JCC looks forward to kicking off our enhanced Corporate Sponsorship Program which includes a variety of benefits for businesses throughout the Hampton Roads Community. Making your gift to the JCC is easy and will help so many of your fellow community members. To learn more about making your gift, contact Evan Levitt, JCC Development Director, at 757-321-2337 or elevitt@simonfamilyjcc.org.
