WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO

A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT& CENTER DIRECTOR

Dear Friends, For more than 60 years, the JCC has been the center of Jewish

programming and services for the Tidewater area. Our programs and

services reach individuals and families, from birth through seniors. We

continue to evolve through the dedication of our professional staff, lay leadership, members, volunteers and our generous donors.

Closed just three days a year, our beautiful building welcomes people of all ages to a comprehensive fitness center, outdoor water park,

exceptional full day infant care and an inviting senior lounge. There is a place and a program for everyone at the JCC.

Year after year, we have been able to grow and develop lasting

memories while building a strong community; and this past year

was no exception. Our Beginnings program continues to grow; we

to be an organization guided by our Jewish values and welcoming to all members of

the community, regardless of age, faith or background.

WE THANK YOU! The Simon Family JCC would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the Tidewater

from area synagogues and organizations, a live band from Israel, and activities for the entire family to enjoy.

Next year, we promise to do even more as we expand class offerings

from fitness to Jewish learning and build programs for families. Our goal in the coming year will be to build and strengthen lasting relationships while maintaining our focus on you and the community. By providing new and enhanced opportunities for our members and donors to

engage with each other through our myriad of programs and services, we will continue to be the JCC for everyone for many generations to come.

WE ARE FAMILY

20

WE ARE FAMILY I am so grateful to the JCC summer camp and their shadow program for children with special needs. My son has down syndrome and has participated in the summer program for a number of years, allowing him to spend quality time with his typically developing peers. I have enjoyed watching his peers adapting to his skill level to allow him to participate and greeting him with enthusiasm when he arrives for the day. I am forever grateful to the JCC and all the children who have provided a safe and welcoming summer experience for my son and other children with special needs. – Lora Schwartz, Camp JCC Parent

We distributed more than 400 books through the BEAR Program. • Eight teens were selected and participated in our first Teen Leadership Program. They provided more than 250 volunteer hours to local agencies.

THE GIFT OF GIVING: AN IMPACT STORY

BRANDON TERKELTAUB INVESTING IN THE NEXT GENERATION

Sheryl Grossman is grateful for the financial support package she receives

from the JCC. The single mother who works full-time says Kids Connection and Camp JCC bring stability and culture to her daughter Sydney’s life. A rising 2nd grader at Kempsville Meadows, Sydney has been in the JCC’s Kids Connection before and after school program for two years. “Kids

Connection provides a solid foundation as well as an enrichment source for Sydney. She’s made friends who she sees day after day, and she’s

become close with her counselors. The music, art, drama and all the extras make Kids Connection very special—it’s amazing to hear about all she’s

done, and Kids Connection provides her with all of these great programs.” Sheryl is also pleased that Sydney is returning to Camp JCC for a second summer. “Since I went to the JCC camp in Norfolk, it’s nostalgic for me.

She sings the same songs and gets to know some Jewish friends. I feel like she is connecting with her heritage, and Camp JCC provides her with this. Plus, she loves all the daily activities of summer camp.”

I’m so thankful for the generosity, the acceptance of non-Jews here, for the financial aid, and for the flexibility. I’ve got the whole package. – Jenn Poston, Kids Connection Parent

When Brandon Terkeltaub was approached about giving once again to Beginnings, the infant and toddler care program at the Simon family JCC, he says it was a “no brainer.” Having generously supported the expansion and redesign of Beginnings almost two years ago when the indoor facility at the JCC was decorated with murals, he decided to support the new infant and toddler playground this year as well. Beginnings, which is thriving, has been limited to an indoor facility only. The new playground, directly adjoined to the infant full care area, offers convenient and safe access for infants and toddlers. The playground enhances the programs by offering a state-of-theart facility and providing meaningful activities to promote socialization and cognitive development such as a climbing structure that can be accessed from a crawling position, a surface made from a special recycled rubber tile to protect against falls, a shade structure covering the entire playground area, and interactive accessories to encourage socialization and cognitive development. Brandon Terkeltaub is the son of Marcy and Paul Terkeltaub, who have been active JCC supporters for years, co-chairing this year’s most successful Israel Fest to date. Following in their

generous footsteps, Brandon made his gift to the Simon Family JCC through the Tidewater Jewish Foundation, and chose Beginnings once again because he was a “lifer” at the JCC himself. “I grew up at the JCC in Norfolk,” says Terkeltaub, a 2011 ODU graduate who is now an investment advisor at the Frieden Agency. “I went to JCC preschool, and spent my summers at JCC camp. It just made sense to help build something for the very young at the Simon Family JCC, in the hopes that children grow and thrive at the JCC as I was fortunate to have done.” “One generation is not enough to benefit society,” say his parents, Marcy and Paul. “The next generation has to continue what we have started. We are very fortunate in our family to be on our third generation giving back to the community. You know that you have been blessed when you see your children expanding upon your goals, dreams and desires, and we are very pleased with what Brandon has chosen to do for the JCC.” The infant and toddler playground is also funded by a grant from the Simon Family Foundation and support from Heidi and Ben Simon.

in assistance will be provided to families in need through scholarships, making summer camp attendance and before & after school care accessible.

WE ARE TOTAL WELLNESS With over 60 group fitness classes offered each week, there is a tremendous variety of group exercise options. For the active older participant, the JCC offers the award winning Zumba Gold. This class is also a great introduction for those just starting Zumba. Ai Chi, a new class to the JCC, is a restorative option taught in the warm water therapy pool. Regular water fitness classes continue to be popular with active seniors on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. The JCC is the only official facility in Virginia Beach to offer Piloxing. The program uniquely blends the power, speed, and agility of boxing with the targeted sculpting and flexibility of Pilates. These techniques are supplemented by the use of weighted gloves. The class is already very popular among members.

level cycle classes, and has the ability to host training and certifications on site. A new Boxing Fit class utilizes boxing gloves and wraps, while instructing students on boxing techniques such as foot work, agility, and speed. H.I.T. (High Intensity Training), another new class, has become a lunch power hour with circuit training designed to strengthen and simultaneously provide an intense cardio vascular workout. The long standing popular classes at the fitness center continue, such as Life Fit, a strength and cardio workout designed as a moderately intensive group exercise class. A range of yoga and Pilates classes from beginner to experienced continue to fill; as does Barre Body, a ballet-based lengthening and strengthening class, which includes upper body as well as floor work.

As the only official Spinning facility in Virginia Beach, the JCC provides top

MARKETING DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS • “Returning To Work,” magazine published to promote our Beginnings Infant Care program won the highest award at this year’s National JCCA Biennial.

Eight year old Kadie Rushing was surprised at Kids Connection when her father, Dustin Rushing, stopped by to see her! Chief Rushing, deployed for six months, arrived home a day early.

• Also at this year’s National JCCA Biennal, our “Word Up Wednesday” YouTube video series received an award for exemplary initiative activity that can be replicated by other JCCs.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS • We opened our doors for the first time on December 25th for the community and served up fun at our Inaugural Christmas Day Pancake Breakfast. Over 150 members of the community had a great day. • We kicked it up a bit with our annual Israel Fest. This year’s Israel Fest presented by Charles Barker Automotive saw record crowds to the campus with 1,800 – 2,000 in attendance. Community synagogues provided a myriad of authentic cuisine, offering festival goers a delicious taste of Israel.
