Welcome to the JCC

A Letter from the Simon Family JCC Executive Director Dear Friends, You will learn about the wide array of programs and classes that the JCC will offer this winter and spring in this season’s program guide. We have listened to what you want and we are offering a variety of fitness classes to meet your needs. Whether you prefer BodyPump®, Vinyasa Yoga, or another one of the over 60 group exercise classes, we have something for you. For the sports enthusiast, we have leagues for youth and adults, and offer a year-round tennis program for all ages. We are thrilled to have a tennis pro on staff. Our aquatics classes can serve the very young with our learn-to-swim program as well as our more senior members of our community with aqua arthritis classes. Check out all of these updated class offerings and much more at www.SimonFamilyJCC.org. Classes aren’t limited to fitness alone at the JCC! From after school creative movement for preschoolers to Israel Advocacy seminars for adults, there are limitless learning opportunities available. We are excited to bring a number of returning events, such as the Latke Palooza celebration December 17th, the December 25th Pancake Breakfast and the Virginia Festival of Jewish Film presented by Alma* and Howard Laderberg, all of which are included in this guide. This year, in addition to some already successful cultural arts events, your programming includes the 2nd Annual Celebrate Israel series. We will host the community-wide Israel Fest again in May, as well as a feature presentation of National Geographic’s presentation of the movie Jerusalem on an IMAX screen, a rare opportunity for the community to experience the amazing impact this city has on so many different types of peoples and religions in a larger than life presentation. Another highlight is a live performance of Israeli musical icon – David Broza! Celebrate Israel is a tremendous undertaking, and there are a variety of corporate and individual sponsorship opportunities available. After the spring programming season, we will once again kick off the summer with your Annual Presidents’ Cup Golf Tournament. All of these programs are possible due to the support from our membership, but also through the generosity of many donors and sponsors. Making your gift to the JCC is easy and will help so many of your fellow community members. Each contribution directly supports programs in our core priority areas: Community, Family, Wellness and Culture. To learn more about making your gift and supporting our programs and scholarship funds, please contact Evan Levitt, our Development Director, at 757-321-2337 or elevitt@simonfamilyjcc.org. I am pleased to present the JCC’s 2014–2015 Winter-Spring Program Guide. Please note that when we update events and classes this winter and spring, it will be kept current on our online program guide which you can find at SimonFamilyJCC.org. Enjoy, and see you around the center! Sincerely,

2

Jewish Holiday Descriptions Tu B’Shvat: Also called the New Year for Trees, on this arbor day, it is customary to eat fruit from trees that grow in Israel, plant trees and provide money for the planting of trees in Israel. Purim: The holiday of Purim celebrates the Book of Esther in the Bible, which relates a plot by the wicked Haman against the Jews and his eventual defeat and demise through the efforts of Mordechai and Queen Esther. It is a day of wearing costumes and partying. Pesach/Passover: Passover recalls the deliverance of Jews from Egyptian slavery. Jews around the world celebrate their freedom at the Seder table as the story of the exodus from Egypt is told. Yom HaShoah: Holocaust Memorial Day is when we remember the victims of the Holocaust in Europe from the 1930’s – 1945. Yom Hazikaron: The day on which Israel honors its war veterans. It is intended to remind people of the price paid by many in defense of the Jewish State. Yom Ha’Atzmaut: Israeli Independence Day celebrates the founding of the State of Israel in May 1948. Shavuot: Shavuot means “weeks,” signifying seven weeks after Passover. It celebrates the moment when Moses received the Torah and the 10 Commandments on Mount Sinai.

DISCOVER THE EXCITEMENT OF DANCE

The Simon Family JCC is proud to present this dance performance by Todd Rosenlieb Dance & Virginia Ballet Theatre. Beginning with the history of ballet technique and how ballet is used to tell a story with movement and music, the audience will feel and understand the story being told by expression, body language, and musical phrasing. A brief history of modern dance will also be discussed, as this form of dance incorporates more freedom of expression than ballet. Children can get up and move with the dancers! BEAR – BE A READER

The Be A Reader (BEAR) program is a literacy and mentorship project that has been helping elementary school children, in 1-3 grades, in Tidewater public schools learn to read. Celebrating its 15th year of service, the BEAR program is currently serving 6 schools with more than 75 program volunteers in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake areas. We are continuing to expand our program and hope to add Portsmouth. New volunteers are always welcome. BEAR volunteer mentors, working under a team leader, meet at an area school for an hour each week and spend quality one-on-one time with a child who has been identified by their teacher as a candidate for literacy mentoring. The Bear students will receive five books during the school year which they get to keep. Working closely with their mentors, the students progress in their development of important academic and social skills. Please contact the BEAR Coordinator at 757-321-2304 to mentor a child or make a monetary donation to the program. Be A Reader is made possible through the generous support of Build-A-Bear, Target, First Book and many local individuals just like you!

SUPPORTING JCC ANNUAL PROGRAMS

Each year, the Simon Family JCC hosts hundreds of programs which fit into four major categories: Culture Arts, Family, Wellness, and Community. A donation to the Simon Family JCC will support each of these categories equally. In addition, we want our members and valued supporters to have the opportunity to direct gifts toward the programs of their choosing! Supporting the JCC’s Annual Fund is an excellent way to make sure anyone who wants to enjoy the JCC will have the opportunity, and that we are able to sustain and enhance our annual events and programs. This year, in addition to our annual film festival and book festival, our Cultural Arts series once again includes performing arts events and children’s cultural arts event. We are thrilled to continue our celebration of Israel through our 2nd Annual Celebrate Israel Series. Making your gift to the JCC is easy and will help so many of your fellow community members. To learn more about making your gift, contact Evan Levitt, JCC Development Director, at 757-321-2337 or elevitt@simonfamilyj.org.

TRIBUTE CARDS

Sending a tribute card is an excellent way to honor a memory or an accomplishment while simultaneously supporting the Simon Family JCC. These cards, some of which feature artwork by local artists, can be sent for any reason including birthdays, B’nai mitzvahs, graduations, and more! Tribute cards are processed within 24 hours of the request. Your minimum donation of $18 may be applied to any program at the JCC. You may request a tribute card online at www.SimonFamily JCC.org or by contacting Evan Levitt, Development Director, at 757-321-2337 or elevitt@simonfamilyjcc.org.

Volunteer Opportunities & Support Your JCC

Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities

ANNUAL PRESIDENTS’ CUP GOLF TOURNAMENT

Each year, the Simon Family JCC hosts a golf tournament fundraiser in honor of those who have served their community as President of the JCC. We recognize that their combined leadership has allowed our center to grow and thrive for more than 60 years. We, as a community, are grateful for the time and energy that the Past Presidents have donated to the center. The portraits of our Past Presidents hang in the JCC Fitness Center hallway. The monies raised through the Presidents’ Cup Golf Tournament help the Simon Family JCC provide special services for children through before and after school care, summer day camp, youth sports, swim classes and other activities. Stay tuned for a date and location of this year’s tournament. Keep an eye out for more information. For information on becoming a Presidents’ Cup Golf Tournament sponsor, please contact Evan Levitt, Development Director, at 757-321-2337or elevitt@simonfamilyjcc.org.
