Welcome to the JCC

A Letter from the Simon Family JCC President Dear Friends, In this season’s program guide, you will learn about the wide array of programs and classes the Simon Family JCC offers during the winter and spring months. Thanks to your suggestions, we are now offering a variety of fitness classes. Whether you prefer BodyPump®, Vinyasa Yoga, or another one of more than 60 group exercise classes, we have something for you. For the sports enthusiast, we have youth and adult leagues and offer a year-round tennis program for all ages. Our aquatics classes serve the very young with our learn-to-swim program up through seniors with aqua arthritis classes. Check out all of these updated class offerings and much more at SimonFamilyJCC.org. Our classes aren’t limited to fitness alone. From after-school drama classes for school-age children to Yiddish classes for adults, we offer limitless learning opportunities. We are excited to bring a number of returning winter events, such as the Latke-Palooza celebration on December 9th, the Pancake Breakfast on December 25th, and the Virginia Festival of Jewish Film presented by Alma* and Howard Laderberg. This year, we’ll also host the 3rd Annual Celebrate Israel series, which includes Israel Fest in June. All of these events, and more, are detailed in this guide. These programs are possible through our memberships and the generosity of many donors and sponsors. Giving to the Simon Family JCC is easy and will help so many of your fellow community members. Each contribution directly supports programs in our core priorities: Community, Family, Total Wellness, and Culture. To learn more about giving and supporting our programs and scholarship funds, please contact Evan Levitt, our Development Director, at ELevitt@SimonFamilyJCC.org or 757-321-2337. I am pleased to present the Simon Family JCC’s 2016 Winter-Spring Program Guide. Please note that as we update events and classes this winter and spring, it will be kept current on our online program guide which you can find at SimonFamilyJCC.org. Enjoy, and see you around the center! Sincerely,

Marty Einhorn President, Simon Family JCC

Jewish Holiday Descriptions Tu B’Shvat: Also called the New Year for Trees, on this arbor day, it is customary to eat fruit from trees that grow in Israel, plant trees and provide money for the planting of trees in Israel. Purim: The holiday of Purim celebrates the Book of Esther in the Bible, which relates a plot by the wicked Haman against the Jews and his eventual defeat and demise through the efforts of Mordechai and Queen Esther. It is a day of wearing costumes and partying. Pesach/Passover: Passover recalls the deliverance of Jews from Egyptian slavery. Jews around the world celebrate their freedom at the Seder table as the story of the exodus from Egypt is told. Yom HaShoah: Holocaust Memorial Day is when we remember the victims of the Holocaust in Europe from the 1930s to 1945. Yom Hazikaron: The day in which Israel honors its war veterans. It is intended to remind people of the price paid by many in defense of the Jewish State. Yom Ha’Atzmaut: Israeli Independence Day celebrates the founding of the State of Israel in May 1948. Shavuot: Shavuot means weeks, signifying seven weeks after Passover. It celebrates the moment when Moses received the Torah and the 10 Commandments on Mount Sinai.

Volunteer Opportunities & Support Your JCC

Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities

BEAR – BE A READER

The Be A Reader (BEAR) program is a literacy and mentoring project that has been helping elementary school children in the Tidewater Area learn to read for 15 years. Currently, the BEAR program is serving seven schools with more than 75 program participants at various schools in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth. BEAR volunteer mentors go to an area school for an hour each week and spend quality one-on-one time with a child who has been identified by their teacher as a candidate for literacy mentoring. Time spent with the child helps him or her learn to read; however, it gives the child so much more. BEAR offers children five books to keep, and a mentor to help them progress in their development of academic and social skills. Please contact the BEAR Coordinator at 757-321-2304 to mentor a child or make a monetary donation to the program. Be A Reader is made possible through the generous support of Build-A-Bear, Target, First Book and many local individuals just like you!

SUPPORTING JCC ANNUAL PROGRAMS

Each year, the Simon Family JCC hosts hundreds of programs which fit into our core priority areas of Culture, Family, Wellness, and Community. An unrestricted donation to the Simon Family JCC will support all of the events and programs in these categories. In addition, we want our members and valued supporters to have the opportunity to direct gifts toward the programs of their choosing! Please visit the JCC’s website to learn about ways to support our programs and the annual fund, and to make a gift online today. This fall, we look forward to our annual Book Festival as well as other Cultural Arts programs. These programs are made possible through generous support of our annual Patron of the Arts Campaign. In addition to individual contributions, the Simon Family JCC looks forward to continuing our Corporate Sponsorship Program which adds major support to everything that the JCC’s offers our community. Making your gift to the JCC is easy and will help so many of your fellow community members. To learn more about making your gift, contact Evan Levitt, JCC Development Director, at 757-321-2337 or ELevitt@SimonFamilyJCC.org.
