Educational Programming WHAT WE CARRY
You can bring the story of a local Holocaust survivor, liberator, or righteous gentile to your school or group. A Holocaust Commission docent will share a documentary film and a vintage suitcase full of artist-created replicas of the subject’s artifacts and mementos. Over 25,000 people have seen a presentation since the 2012 premier of the program, recently presented at the National Conference for the Social Studies. To view our films or inquire about a presentation visit http://jewishva.org/holocaust-what-we-carry or email mlipkin@ujft.org.
THE 2018 ANNUAL ELIE WIESEL WRITING & VISUAL ARTS COMPETITIONS
These competitions honor the memory of Elie Wiesel (1928-2016). A survivor of the Holocaust, Wiesel was a writer and professor who received the Nobel Peace Prize for his dedication to human rights and Holocaust remembrance. He spent much of his life advocating against indifference and promoting action on behalf of those who could not help themselves. His words challenge us to remember history and to open our eyes to the present. They are a call to move forward past indifference. The Holocaust Commission encourages students to learn about the Holocaust and apply its lessons to their own lives. By entering this competition with their original words or artwork, they can understand the importance of moral courage, and show themselves and others the dangers of all types of prejudice, peer pressure, unthinking obedience to authority, and indifference to the suffering of others. For more details visit http://jewishva.org/holocaust-elie-wiesel . Winners will be honored at Yom Hashoah. Mark your calendar for Yom Hashoah, at Beth El Temple on Wednesday April 11, 2018, with guest speaker, Dr. Mark Wygoda, discussing his father’s life as a Jewish leader of the Italian partisan.

Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities BeAR—Be A Reader
The Be A Reader (BeAR) program is a literacy and mentoring project that has been helping elementary school children in the Tidewater Area for 18 years. Currently, the BeAR program is serving eight schools with more than 75 program participants at various schools in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. BeAR volunteer mentors go to area schools for an hour each week and spend quality one-on-one time with a child who has been identified by their teacher as a candidate for literacy mentoring. Time spent with the child helps with reading skills; however, it gives the child so much more. BeAR gives children five books to keep, and a mentor to help them progress in their development of academic and social skills. For more information, email WWeissman@ujft.org or visit JewishVA.org/BeAReader
SUPPORTING JCC ANNUAL PROGRAMS
Each year, the Simon Family JCC hosts hundreds of programs which fit into our core priority areas of Culture, Family, Wellness, and Community. An unrestricted donation to the Simon Family JCC will support all of the events and programs in these categories. In addition, we want our members and valued supporters to have the opportunity to direct gifts toward the programs of their choosing! Please visit the JCC’s website to learn about ways to support our programs and the annual fund, and to make a gift online today. This fall, we look forward to our annual Lee and Bernard Jaffe* Family Book Festival as well as other Cultural Arts programs. These programs are made possible through generous support of our annual Patron of the Arts Campaign. In addition to individual contributions, the Simon Family JCC looks forward to continuing our Corporate Sponsorship Program which adds major support to everything that the JCC offers our community.
