KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | NCAA & SEC

The Best of the Best

THE NCAA & SEC EXPERIENCE The Southeastern Conference is widely regarded as the most dominating gymnastics conference in the NCAA. Since the inaugural NCAA Championship in 1982, the SEC has had at least one team in all 28 national championship meets, with Florida being one of only two teams nationally (Utah is the other) to have appeared at all 19 contests prior to the Gators barely missing the cut in 2000. The SEC has also had at least one team finish in the Top-10 in the NCAA since 1982. The SEC entered the record books at the 1998 NCAA Championships, becoming the only conference in women’s collegiate gymnastics to sweep the top three spots. Georgia won its fourth championship title with the largest margin of victory in over 10 years. The Bulldogs outdistanced second-place Florida who finished just ahead of Alabama. It marked the 12th consecutive year that the SEC placed at least two teams in the final top five.

SEC NOTES • Georgia won its 10th national championship and fifth in a row in 2009 and brought home the SEC’s 14th overall title. • In 1998 the SEC entered the record book as the only conference to sweep the top three spots at the NCAA meet (Georgia, Florida, Alabama). • 2009 marked the 25th consecutive year that the SEC placed at least two teams in the final top five and the 17th consecutive year placing three in the top 10. A record five SEC teams advanced to the Super Six in 2009. • 19 times in the past 25 years the SEC has placed at least four teams in the Top 10 at the NCAA meet, including 1991,1993, 2008 and 2009 when five teams were ranked. • SEC leads all Division I conferences in NCAA Individual titles with 74. • Georgia leads all Division I schools in NCAA Individual titles with 38. • The SEC was awarded 28 first team All-American honors in 2009.

The Kentucky gymnastics team is synonymous with making postseason appearances. The Wildcats, who have made five consecutive NCAA Central Regional appearances, have qualified for regionals in 21 of the last 28 years. In 1990, Amie Winn became UK’s first regional all-around champion. Winn also earned the vault championship the same year. In 1994, Jenny Hansen took center stage as she claimed first place on the vault and floor to become the school’s second regional all-around champion. Her 10.0 on the vault was only the third such score in the meet’s history. She would go on to claim another vault championship in 1995 along with second-place finishes on the beam and in the all-around, as well as third place on the bars. In 1996, Hansen placed second on vault and floor. Though the 2010 gymnasts are attempting to earn their first-ever trip to the NCAA Nationals as a team, several Wildcats have had individual success at the national level. In 2002, sophomore Aronda Primault became just the third gymnast in school history to earn All-America status.

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | FACILITIES

FANTASTIC FACILITIES of Kentucky Gymnastics Since the program’s inception, historic Memorial Coliseum has served as the home of the Kentucky gymnastics program. In addition, the Wildcats have their own exclusive practice facility in the Nutter Field House, so they never have to worry about sharing practice time with any other team. The Kentucky gymnastics facilities at Memorial Coliseum have undergone a complete transformation. New gymnastics facilities include: • A new locker room overlooking the Memorial Coliseum court. • A new team room, exclusively for the gymnastics team, that features room to meet, study or relax, adjacent to the squad’s locker room in Memorial Coliseum. • New offices for the Kentucky gymnastics coaches overlooking the Memorial Coliseum floor. • A brand-new state-of-the art athletic training room adjacent to the court and locker room.

“I love our new facilities. They show a continued commitment from the administration to our program. The new locker room and team room really make the athletes feel special.” — Head Coach Mo Mitchell

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | TRAINING

Emphasizing First-Class Development

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

UK OLYMPIC SPORT TRAINING PHILOSOPHY: 1. Development of core strength. Imagine the body as a three-link chain with the head and arms being one link, the torso / trunk being the second link and the legs being the third link. If the core (trunk / torso) link is weak or inflexible, there is little chance of maximizing potential because all body movements stem from the core. 2. Train using ground-based, multi-joint lifting vs. machine (isolation) lifting. Most athletes participate in stand up power sports using many muscle groups at once. The emphasis of training should be on total body athleticism and flexibility rather than having body weight supported by a machine and forcing isolation of just one muscle group. By incorporating ground-based lifts and exercises that focus on the total body, the athlete becomes more prepared to use his/her whole body in sport skills. 3. Train for power (which results in increased speed). Power = (Mass Moved x Distance) / Time The less time it takes to move a mass a certain distance, the higher the output. As seen in the above formula, an increase in speed of movement results in an increase in power. 4. Train athleticism. Many factors are included in athleticism: strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, coordination, fitness level and mental toughness are just a few. It is the goal to maximize an athlete’s overall athleticism.

TYPICAL TRAINING SCHEDULE Monday - 6:30-7:30 a.m. - Spinning; 1-4 p.m. - Practice Tuesday - 1-4 p.m. - Practice/Weights Wednesday - 6:30-7:30 a.m. - Cardio; NO PRACTICE Thursday - 1-4 p.m. - Practice/In gym conditioning circuit Friday - 6:30-7:30 a.m. - Spinning; 1-4 p.m. - Practice/Weights Saturday - OFF Sunday - 1-3 p.m. - Team Meeting/Cardio

5. Train as a team. When teams train together, it provides another opportunity to develop chemistry, teamwork, leadership skills and a competitive environment. Within this competitive environment, teams can work on mental toughness, attacking the weights and maintaining a positive attitude. By enabling athletes to work on these things as a team, it helps to promote a stronger sense of unity, therefore making it harder to “fold” under pressure. 6. Make workouts short and intense. There are many philosophies on how to get athletes stronger, faster and more flexible. But, when combined, all these philosophies have the same three underlying principles: 1. The workouts should be highly organized; 2. The workouts should be short in duration; 3. The workouts should be extremely intense. The following are recommendations for athletes concerning days and times of strength training (including warmups): • In-season: 2-4 days /week; 25-45 mins /workout; • Post-season: 3-4 days /week; 45-60 mins /workout; • Pre-season: 3-4 days /week; 30-60 mins /workout.

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | ACADEMIC PRIORITY

CATS

Ohio Casualty Center for Academic & Tutorial Services

The University of Kentucky has made a commitment to put the student-athlete at the heart of the program. The cornerstone of that commitment lies in the academic success of the University’s student-athletes. And at UK, that success stems from the resources within the Ohio Casualty Group’s Center for Academic and Tutorial Services (CATS). UK opened CATS in 1981, the nation’s first academic center dedicated exclusively to student-athletes. Over the years, as the services offered by CATS have grown, so did the need for additional space. As a result, UK built a new facility - the Ohio Casualty Center for Academic and Tutorial Services, thanks to a one-million dollar grant from the Ohio Casualty Insurance Group. The Ohio Casualty Center opened in 1998 at a total cost of $2.4 million.

10

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | ACADEMIC PRIORITY Much of the credit for UK’s academic success goes to the Athletics Association’s academic support system - the Center for Academic and Tutorial Services, or simply, “CATS.” CATS, constructed in Memorial Coliseum, includes: • 20,000 square feet of space - more than double the size of the former CATS facility; • a computer room housing 35 computers; • a study area which accommodates 90-100 people; • 24 tutoring rooms; • a career development and life skills resource center; • a community outreach office; and • offices for the staff. Certainly, a facility is a good start, but any program - especially in academics - is only as good as the people who run it. And UK is fortunate to have outstanding leaders in its academics support system. Bob Bradley, Associate Athletics Director for Student Services, oversees the CATS program. Bradley was named National Academic Advisor of the Year in 1989 and 1992. In 2000 he was selected as the CHAMPS Life Skills Coordinator of the Year by the NCAA Division I-A Athletic Directors Association. CATS has a full-time staff of 11. They also employ seven graduate assistants and numerous tutors, both from the University and the surrounding

community. UK has budgeted more than $1,000,000 for the operation of CATS in the coming year. “We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished in the academic arena,” Bradley says. “The CATS program is focused on winning in the classroom. We look at each student-athlete’s individual needs, set goals, and develop strategies to attain those goals. Our center provides our student-athletes with a definite advantage over student-athletes at many other institutions. Our goal is to show that we care about the student as well as the athlete.” For the CATS staff, showing you care means more than helping athletes maintain eligibility, graduate, or win awards. The academics staff also prepares student-athletes for life after college with the Wildcat Career Development Program. The Career Development Program helps student-athletes look to the future through a step-bystep process which includes: • Mentoring and internships, which help determine career interests; • career counseling; • resume writing; and • forming a career plan. The Wildcat Career Development Program works closely with the University’s Career Planning and Placement Center in order to provide additional assistance when needed.

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | ADMINISTRATION

DR. LEE T. TODD, JR., Lee T. Todd, Jr., became the 11th president of the University of Kentucky on July 1, 2001, after serving as senior vice president of IBM’s Lotus Development Corp. President Todd is the sixth UK alumnus to hold the presidency. President Todd has concentrated his efforts and energies on helping his alma mater achieve a greater level of national prominence. He launched the University of Kentucky’s Top 20 Business Plan in December 2005. The plan is a quantitative analysis highlighting what it will take for UK to achieve its state-mandated goal of building a Top 20 public research university. Widely hailed as the first business plan by a public university in the nation, UK’s plan garnered widespread national attention. It has been featured by national media outlets and recognized by peer institutions, as several higher education leaders have visited UK’s campus to learn more about the Business Plan approach. He continues to champion UK’s outreach efforts. President Todd launched a university-funded research program called the Commonwealth Collaboratives. The initiative features 36 of UK’s top research teams, who are focused on solving the

intrinsic problems that have held the state back from reaching its full potential. It is part of UK’s effort to ensure that its research hits the ground in Kentucky and changes lives throughout the Commonwealth. President Todd has spearheaded an effort to revitalize health care in Kentucky. In June 2006, UK unveiled the Commonwealth’s Medical Campus of the Future, a multi-phased project aimed at providing Kentuckians with cutting-edge, 21st century health care. As part of the revamped academic medical campus, UK will construct a new, one million square foot University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital and a new College of Pharmacy. President Todd is Chair of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). He also is President of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Executive Committee. President Todd serves on the Equitable Resources Board of Directors and is chair of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Task Force. He is chair of the National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education’s (NCCI) Leveraging Excellence Award selection panel. President Todd also is a member of the Business Higher Education Forum and the Council on Competitiveness.

MITCH BARNHART, Mitch Barnhart is in his eighth year at the University of Kentucky, with unparalleled accomplishments in his past and unprecedented goals for the future. When he arrived in 2002, Barnhart’s first move was to totally support all 22 varsity sports with the maximum number of scholarships and coaches, along with the facilities, equipment and support staff needed to make those teams successful. The commitment to fully fund every sport produced never-before-seen successes in UK athletics, with first-ever Southeastern Conference championships in baseball, men’s golf and women’s tennis. Perhaps the biggest on-field turnaround has been in football, where Barnhart’s hire of Rich Brooks has led the Wildcats to bowl wins in three consecutive years, the first time that has been accomplished in UK’s 117 seasons in the sport. In order to make the dreams a reality, Barnhart spearheaded record-breaking growth in philanthropic giving, ticket sales and a comprehensive multi-media

rights agreement. Barnhart’s connection to UK student-athletes is evident by his individual interaction and dedication to provide the support services necessary to meet their needs. UK Athletics spends more than $1.5 million annually on its nationally renowned Center for Academic and Tutorial Services. He also began the CATSPYs, an annual awards program that honors the best of UK Athletics. Additional initiatives begun under Barnhart’s leadership include the UK Athletics Hall of Fame and the Joe Craft Center, a $30 million facility that includes new practice and administrative space for a variety of sports. Barnhart’s influence reaches far beyond the fields of competition. Despite athletics’ urgent financial needs, Barnhart initiated a $1.2 million annual contribution to the University’s scholarship program, a contribution that is being increased to $1.7 million this year. Social responsibility in the Commonwealth of Kentucky is a priority for Barnhart, who has been extremely active in community service and encourages the UK athletics staff to do the same. 14

Not content with past successes, Barnhart’s ambitious course for the future was revealed with his recent announcement of the “15x15x15” plan. The goals are to win at least 15 conference or national championships and rank among the NCAA’s top 15 athletic programs by 2015 – all of which would represent unprecedented achievements for UK Athletics – while continuing to expand UK Athletics’ service to the local community and Commonwealth of Kentucky. Another goal of the initiative is a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average for UK’s 500 student-athletes. Barnhart arrived at Kentucky from Oregon State, where he served four successful years (1998-2002) as athletics director. Before his term at OSU, he worked in athletics administration posts at Tennessee (1986-98), Southern Methodist University (1983-86), Oregon (1983) and San Diego State (1982-1983). Barnhart, 50, is a native of Kansas City, Kan. He received his bachelor degree from Ottawa University (Kansas) in 1981 and a masters in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. He and his wife, the former Connie Brown, have three children, Kirby, Blaire and Scott.

2010 KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | IT’S BUSINESS

2010 OUTLOOK Head coach Mo Mitchell feels a new team mantra will give the University of Kentucky gymnastics team an extra edge this year. “It’s business,” Mitchell said. “When we go on the road; it’s business. When we are at home; it’s business. They aren’t vacation trips; they’re business trips. We’re taking our office on the road and we have a job to do. It starts from the top, it starts from me. I’m all about business too. The coaches and the athletes all have to be on the same page. I think we have a good group of athletes willing to do that.” Mitchell begins his seventh year at UK after helping the Wildcats add 22 team and individual records into the Kentucky record books last season. He also guided a solid vault team to a year-long top-15 status. Mitchell even developed freshman Whitney Rose into the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year. “We may have made a few mistakes last season, but this year our whole attitude is changing,” Mitchell said. “We’re going to get ready earlier. When the season starts we don’t want to be focused on staying on the equipment. When the season starts we want to

Mo Mitchell

focus on doing our skills at perfection, not just doing them. We’re going to come out with a killer attitude this year; we want to have a killer instinct.” Two pre-season exhibition meets are scheduled for the Blue and White this season, one intra-squad meet in November and an exhibition inter-squad meet against Ball State is slated for the beginning of December. Complete preparation is the key for UK this season. A squad of 14 will be leading the Blue and White into the program’s 30th season. At the end of the year waits what will be the team’s 22nd post-season appearance since 1982. And this year the meet is in Kentucky’s own Memorial Coliseum hosted by the Wildcats themselves. “I think it is a brilliant opportunity for us,” Mitchell said. “We can’t ask for a better situation. It’s at our home, on our equipment, we have our fans here and we need to get it done.” But before UK can look to the regional meet, they must take on the ever challenging SEC schedule as well as a difficult non-conference slate. Six home and five away meets headline the 2010 year. Kentucky faces the top gymnastics programs in the nation every season, so they are no strangers to the type of game the six other conference schools can bring. The LSU Tigers will be meeting Kentucky at the Lady Luck Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., for the Cats’ first conference meet of 2010. Arizona State and Missouri will also be competing in Sin City with the Tigers and Wildcats. Other league meets include Florida, Auburn and Alabama in the Bluegrass while UK is set to hit the road to meet Arkansas and the reigning NCAA Champion, Georgia. Texas Woman’s, Kent State, Illinois State, George Washington and Oregon State finish out the schedule. Whether or not home court makes a difference, Mitchell believes in one bottom line: “If you hit your hand stands, stick your landings

16

and make your routines, giving the judges nothing to take off, then they don’t take anything off.” There are three new additions to the team, current Level 10 National Beam champion Caitlyn Ciokajlo, Rachel Sarnovsky and Caitlin Satkowiak. The trio of Wildcat rookies will be added to an already solid roster. However Kentucky will be looking for athletes to step up and fill the voids left by Heather Hite, Natalie Rubinstein and Bridget Carreiro who graduated in May. Not only is competition amongst teams rigorous, but competition to be in the starting six for Kentucky is also just as challenging. In order to prepare the team, Coach Mitchell has demanded dedication and hard work from the get-go. “They’ve worked hard this summer,” Mitchell said. “Coach Chuck [Dickerson] has been here with them all summer working hard and we’ve put some ground rules down. We have some conditioning and running tests we have been doing so that we are in the best shape we can be in when we start the season. Is it going to be tougher? Yeah it is, but we’re in the SEC, five of the top six teams came from the SEC last year and if we’re going to be a part of that this year we need to train that way.”

Emily Green

Vault

The Wildcats were a top15 vault squad in 2009 and return all of the starters but are also jam packed with depth on this event. There are several members of the team who can put up big numbers on the vault outside of the starting six. Last season Kentucky broke its vault Regional Qualifying Score and looks to improve its mark once again. Senior Emily Green led the Cats last season and will be returning after having a record season on vault, averaging a 9.850 with a career-high 9.950. She also ranked as high as No. 20 in the country. SEC Freshman of the Year Rose and junior Jasmine Minion are also back in the line-up, each averaging above a 9.800 on the event last year. Consistency on

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | IT’S BUSINESS “It’s business. When we go on the road; it’s business. When we are at home; it’s business. They aren’t vacation trips; they’re business trips. We’re taking our office on the road and we have a job to do. It starts from the top, it starts from me. — Head Coach Mo Mitchell vault was an element UK perfected last season under the direction of Coach Dickerson. Dickerson brings more than 25 years of coaching expertise to the event. His emphasis on training and conditioning will help maintain the success UK as seen on the event. Outside of last year’s vault line-up is senior Emilie Rymer who is a strong candidate to start on vault after being sidelined by an early season ankle injury last year.

Uneven Bars The Wildcats take a hit in their uneven bars lineup with the loss of Rubinstein who ranked top-20 on the event and averaged a 9.800 on bars. Although Coach Mitchell feels that Jamie newcomer Ciokajlo can fill the Reimann void: “I’m really excited about Caitlyn because not only is she a really good beam worker, she’s a great all-arounder. Her floor scores are great, her bars are incredible and she’ll definitely be that kid in that spot to take over for Natalie on the bar routine. A lot of very unique stuff in her bar routine and just a great kid to work with.” Bars specialist Jamie Reimann will be returning for her senior year. Reimann stepped into the line-up last season and didn’t disappoint, earning a career-best 9.850 at a meet in her home state of Iowa. Junior Colleen Williams will also be returning to the line-up after competing bars the second half of the season. Sophomore Storey Morris, now with a year under her belt, is a solid contender on the event.

Balance Beam A beam coaching change brings former UK gymnast Heather Hite back onto the gymnastics scene. After leading the squad 13 times on the beam last season and acquiring 16 career balance beam titles, Hite looks to help the team from a coaching position now. The Cats also lost Lexington, Ky., native Carreiro who was a solid beam worker as well. Stepping up to

the plate from last season’s line-up will be Green, the Kentucky native looks forward to making big conRymer, Minion and Rose, all gymnasts who will be tributions on the mat later in the year. Ferguson finished 2009 with high scores of able to post solid scores. I’m really looking forward to the improvements we’re going to have over there.”

Floor Exercise Always an explosive event for the Blue and White, the Cats should continue their dominance on the floor exercise. Despite a big hole left by the loss of Hite, Kentucky still has many standouts eagerly waiting to fill the position. Junior Minion earned two floor titles last season and led the team three times on the event. Rymer will be back in full health this season and looks to make up for lost time while fellow senior Green will also return to the lineup. Green impressed nailing a 9.825 or betting in five of the last seven meets.

All-Around Senior Hillary Ferguson and Rose were UK’s two primary all-around performers last season. Junior Andrea Mitchell also competed on four events at the start of the season before suffering a back injury. Rose and Mitchell will be back in the lineup and compete for the all-around spots. Ferguson, entering her last year as a Wildcat, underwent surgery during the summer on some nagging injuries. Despite not being able to kick off the season on all four events,

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | COACHES

HEAD COACH

HAJILE “MO” MITCHELL Head coach Hajile “Mo” Mitchell has become a leader in landmarks for the Kentucky gymnastics team. Seven years have passed since Mitchell acquired the Wildcat team, which he has established as a program that can compete on the national

scene and in the demanding Southeastern Conference. In 2009 and 2008 Mitchell’s Cats smashed multiple school records throughout the season and put several team and individual scores in the UK record books. The Wildcats have also broken three

20

Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) records and earned Kentucky’s longest winning streak of eight meets in the past two years. Last season the Blue and White finished in the top 30 of the GymInfo polls for the fourth consecutive year under Mitchell. Kentucky ended the season top25 on all four events which includes Mitchell’s vault squad who ranked top-15 all year, peaking at No. 7. With such a high performance team, Mitchell was able to add 10 top-10 scores to his resume. Two of those scores ranked top-three in Kentucky history. Not only has Mitchell created a winning program, but he has established an exciting brand of gymnastics for fans to watch. Kentucky has made five uninterrupted NCAA Regional appearances and ranked in the nation’s top-15 in attendance in each of his six seasons guiding the Cats, including top-10 attendance rankings in four of those seasons. Off the mat, nine of Mitchell’s student-athletes were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, including two SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll distinctions. In 2006, Mitchell directed UK to its first winning season in 13 years and just the second in the program’s history. During the year, the Wildcats posted two of the top-four team totals in school annals. Three of the top four overall have come in the past three seasons as Kentucky has continued to ascend to national prominence. The Wildcats also scored one of the biggest wins in school history when they knocked off ninthranked Auburn. Along with the success came a second consecutive NCAA Regional appearance, at which UK finished fourth and NCAA Central Region Coach of the Year honors for Mitchell. The 2005 campaign was another building block in Kentucky’s step-up into national prominence. The year saw the Cats enjoy their highest win total in over a decade, an NCAA Regional appearance and a top national ranking of No. 10. Outside of the gym, Mitchell’s gymnasts continued to perform at a high level in the classroom, earning a 3.39 team GPA. Of the team’s 16 gymnasts on the roster, 13 earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher, including seven above a 3.5. Throughout his coaching career, Mitchell has been determined to guide his gymnasts to their top performing level. He coached numerous state, regional and national team and individual champions. Two athletes under his coaching direction

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | COACHES won the prestigious McDonald’s Cup award. “Coaching at different levels gives me the opportunity to see gymnasts’ careers progress,” Mitchell said. “It’s wonderful to see the determination and growth of your athletes pay off for them.” Mitchell not only pushes his athletes to excel in the gym, but in the classroom and social settings as well. “I love college, especially the academic part of it,” Mitchell said. “I’m in a perfect world because I love academia and I love working with athletes and helping them reach their full potential. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

A native of Chicago, Mitchell attended the University of Houston and graduated in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology-Piping and Design. As an assistant under legendary coach Leah Little, he made a name for himself as a phenomenal coach and recruiter. He was twice named NCAA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year (1999 & 2002). Mitchell, who has 25 years of coaching experience, started coaching at Lansing (Mich.) Eastern High School, when he was a sophomore in college. After a year as an assistant coach, Mitchell was promoted to head coach and took the team to its first conference championship. His next assignment was at a private club, the Capital City Kips, in Lansing. He coached there for two years until moving to Texas to work briefly with the highly regarded Bela Karolyi. “It was pretty intense and eye-opening,” Mitchell said of his experience with the former Olympic coach. “It’s an experience I don’t regret because I learned a lot, but it wasn’t the route I wanted to take as far as how I wanted to train athletes.” Mitchell then spent eight years coaching at Gizi Gymnastics in Houston before joining Little’s staff in 1997. He had become acquainted with Coach Little several years before and helped her with summer gymnastics camps in the Bluegrass. Under Little’s tutelage, Mitchell refined his skills and learned valuable lessons about coaching at the collegiate level. “I was pretty good at dealing with upper-level gymnasts (at the club level) before coming here, and that’s what made my transition a lot easier.” Mitchell said. “But, I also learned that you really have to be willing to listen, and it’s not just about gymnastics. You have to be a role model, counselor, and tutor among other personas to be successful.” Mitchell is married to Lynn Mitchell of Cincinnati, Ohio. The couple has one son, Xavier Alexander Mitchell. The family resides in Richmond, Ky. Under Little’s tutelage, Mitchell refined his skills and learned valuable lessons about coaching at the collegiate level.

Q & A WITH COACH MITCHELL Are there any changes you are making this year? “One of the things we’re going to change is getting ready earlier. When the season starts we don’t want to be focused on staying on the equipment. When the season starts we want to focus on sticking our landings and sticking our handstands and doing our skills at perfection, not just doing our skills. We’re going to come out with a killer attitude this year, we want to have a killer instinct. It’s business. We’re going on the road, it’s business. When we’re at home it’s business. They aren’t vacation trips, they’re business trips. We’re taking our office on the road and we have a job to do. Our whole attitude is going to change, those are some of the things we’re going to change this year. It starts from the top, it starts from me. I’m all about business too. ” Are there any advantages to competing in a neutral location? “The great thing is there are more than two teams. We will have eight judges instead of four and I think that makes a bigger difference because one judge can’t hurt you as bad in that kind of arena as when there is just four. The bottom line is in our sport there is no defense. There isn’t really a home field advantage IF you do your job. If you hit your hand stands, stick your landings and make your routines, giving them nothing to take off, then they don’t take anything off.” Thoughts on hosting the NCAA Lexington Regional in April... “I think it is a brilliant opportunity for us. It’s a year we are trying to take the step where no team has ever gone before at UK. We can’t ask for a better situation. It’s at our home, on our equipment, we have our fans here, we need to get it done. It is exciting to have it here, we have a brand new floor to compete on. We just need to get it done and I think we will. They are setting themselves up to be the team that goes next.”

ASSISTANT COACH

CHUCK DICKERSON Chuck Dickerson, entering his third year with the Kentucky gymnastics program, has helped oversee UK’s success since his inaugural year in 2008. “Chuck has been a breath of fresh air to the gymnastics team,” head coach Mo Mitchell said. “He is well respected and his passion for success is incredible. I am very comfortable with everything he brings to the program. Chuck handles the responsibilities of the vault team and shares the responsibilities of the bars team.” Since Dickerson joined the Blue and White, he has helped improve the team’s vault and uneven bars Regional Qualifying Scores. A team’s RQS is based on its six best scores, three of which must be away. The top score is then eliminated and the remaining five marks are averaged to obtain the score. After just two years with the Cats, Dickerson’s guidance on the vault and uneven bars has given UK the edge to secure new school RQS records. The vault score has increased by .125 for a final RQS of 49.150 on vault, ranking No. 14 in the country. Kentucky remained in the nation’s top 20 all season long. The Wildcats’ uneven bars RQS has improved by almost .2 points since 2007, as the Cats reached as high as No. 19 in the rankings this past season. Under the direction of Dickerson, several gym-

nasts have achieved individual success. One of his rising stars has been Emily Green, now a senior. As the Cats’ leading vaulter in 2008 and 2009, Green earned a career-best 9.950 her junior season, a mark which had not been earned since 2003. Green has averaged above a 9.800 the last two years and is continually ranked top 20 on the event. Sophomore Whitney Rose also stood out for the Blue and White in 2009. Her consistency on vault gave her an average of 9.827 while also earning scores of 9.9 and above. Junior Jasmine Minion is another solid piece of the vaulting line-up. Averaging a 9.845, Minion never recorded a mark below a 9.800, seven scores were a 9.875 or better. Last season saw the return of the Blue and White’s uneven bars leader, Natalie Rubinstein. In her final season of competition, she earned three bars titles and led the Cats 11 times on the event, averaging 9.802. Several other gymnasts drastically improved their individual averages on the uneven bars with the help of Dickerson. Junior Colleen Williams averaged over half a point better this past season on the bars while seniors Hillary Ferguson and Jamie Reimann both showed marked improvement. With over 25 years of coaching experience, Dickerson is able to assist the Wildcats in recruiting top talent. In 2008, Dickerson helped sign fellow Tyler,

Texas, native Storey Morris and Rose of Frisco, Texas, the 2008 Texas State vault and all-around champion. Rose was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2009. He also helped bring in Caitlyn Ciokajlo who won the Level 10 Junior Olympic National balance beam title. Since 2004, the Tyler, Texas, native had been working in his hometown at Texas East Gymnastics where he coached current UK gymnast, Morris. In both 2006 and 2007, he qualified a gymnast for the USA Championships to go along with his numerous national qualifiers in his four-year span. Prior to his time at Texas East, Dickerson spent eight years at Rowland/Ballard Gymnastics in Kingwood, Texas. While there, he had seven athletes receive Division I scholarships and sent 15 on to the national championships. In 2002, he earned his greatest honor when voted the Texas USA Gymnastics Coach of the Year by his peers. Early on in his career, Dickerson spent 10 years working under famed coach Bela Karolyi. In his coaching career, Dickerson has coached three national champions. Dickerson resides in Lexington.

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | COACHES

ASSISTANT COACH

HEATHER HITE Former University of Kentucky gymnastics standout Heather Hite will return to her alma mater as assistant coach this season. Hite competed for the Wildcats for four years and was one of the program's most exceptional balance beam and floor exercise performers. "You watch Heather and you can just see her leadership skills and how much respect she garnered from the athletes last year," head coach Mo Mitchell said. "I'm really excited to have her stay with our program. There are some pros and cons; for one she's a little young, but on the other hand she has some experience beyond her years. I just think that it's a small change that is going to make a major difference. She's young, enthusiastic, excited and wants this season to be perfect. The athletes who competed with her can look at her and see that she knows what she is talking about because she got it done when she competed for UK." Hite has many other credentials than just her outstanding career as a member of the Kentucky squad.

She has previous coaching experience (2006-present) from All-American Gymnastics, training all levels of gymnasts and choreographing floor routines. Hite also has 16 years of dance experience, studying ballet, tap and jazz, which will be invaluable to the development of the Wildcats' beam and floor routines. During her senior season in 2009, Hite ranked as high as No. 16 on the beam while also reaching national status on the floor. Last year she competed in every meet for the Cats while leading UK 13 times on the balance beam and eight times on the floor exercise, recording season highs of 9.925 on both events. The senior captain's leadership helped guide the team to the program's second-best beam score in school history while in Anchorage, Alaska, with a 49.300. Two of Hite's finest career performances came in 2007 as a sophomore when she recorded a 9.950 on beam and floor, becoming the first Wildcat since 13-time All-American selection Jenny Hansen did so in 1996. Both marks were earned within six days of one another.

23

Hite ended her career with 27 event titles, 14 on beam and 13 on floor. While at Kentucky, Hite was a two-time Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll selection, was named the 2006 CATSPY Female Rookie of the Year and inducted into the Frank G. Ham Society of Character in 2008. "It is amazing to be able to stay at Kentucky," Hite said. "I love Lexington. I loved every experience I had as a gymnast here. I am so happy I get to stay where I've been for the past four years because that is why I chose this school in the first place. They are such a great athletic department, a great team and have great coaches all the way around, and I want to be a part of that. I came to UK to accomplish a goal of going to nationals and we didn't quite make it there while I was on the team. Therefore, I want to reach that goal as a coach and help those girls go on to the next level of competition. I feel like I still have work to do here." Hite graduated from UK in the summer of 2009 with a degree in kinesiology. She is the daughter of Roger and Pam Hite who reside in Parkersburg, W. Va.

HISTORY AND RECORDS

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | RECORD-BREAKING SEASON

2009 SEASON IN REVIEW

In 2009, the Kentucky gymnastics team continued to make its mark in school history. The Wildcats broke the vault Regional Qualifying Score record, set team records while individual Cats found their own place in UK’s record books. This year marked Kentucky’s 21st overall and fifth straight time advancing to the NCAA Regional Championships since they first went in 1982, just one year after the program’s inception. UK has also made NCAA postseason appearances five out of the six years Mo Mitchell has been the head coach.

Top-20 Vault Team

Rose. The Cats scored a season-high 49.250 at the NCAA Central Region meet and earned three scores of 49.225 during the 2009 season, including at the Southeastern Conference Championships. Both scores rank in the top five in school history.

In 2009 Kentucky dominated the vault scene, ranking in the top-20 all season. It made sense the Cats were a top-ranked vault squad as UK averaged a 49.052 throughout the year. The team improved the program’s vault Regional Qualifying Score record to 49.150, improving its mark by over a tenth of a point (49.035 in 2008). The Wildcats vault lineup was led by junior Emily Green who obtained a season high of 9.950 in Anchorage, Alaska, and was continually ranked on the event all year. She became one of only four other Kentucky gymnasts to earn a 9.950 or better on the event and the first Wildcat since All-American Aronda Primault accomplished the feat in 2003. Two other gymnasts ranked in the top 50 on vault for Kentucky, sophomore Jasmine Minion and freshman Whitney

Emily Green

Balancing Act The Wildcats’ season-best balance beam score came while the Blue and White tested out the Last Frontier. The first mark of 9.800 by junior Hillary Ferguson kick started the way to a record book beam performance by the Cats. Senior Bridget Carreiro stuck a career-high 9.900, placing second overall. Junior Emilie Rymer contributed with a season-high 9.850, while Rose’s career-best 9.850 and senior Heather Hite’s season-high 9.925 solidified the 49.300. The mark ranks No. 2 in school history.

KENTUCKY GYMNASTICS 2010 | RECORD-BREAKING SEASON Mo-Town Records Head Coach Mo Mitchell has not only put more numbers in the Kentucky record books, but his own as well. In the last meets of the regular season, Mitchell grabbed season-high totals on vault, balance beam and overall. The Cats earned a 196.225, the third highest in school history and second highest since Mitchell has been at UK. His team was also able to nab a 49.300 on beam, also the second best in school annals and Mitchell’s career. To cap off the season, at the 2009 SEC Gymnastics Championships Kentucky earned a 195.000, the best score since the 195.850 earned at the 2001 championship meet. During the NCAA Central Region meet in Columbus, Ohio, the team earned a season-high vault score of 49; a top-five score in UK record books and the best vault total recorded under Mitchell.

score for her third career title. Community service was also acknowledged by the SEC at the championship meet. Senior Natalie Rubinstein was named to the SEC Community Service team. The Gymnastics Community Service Team consists of seven SEC gymnasts, one from each competing institution. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.

9.805 in the event. Rubinstein tied her career-best 9.900 on the uneven bars and was selected to the SEC Community Service Team. Carreiro graduates after earning a beam careerhigh of 9.900 against Alaska, helping the Wildcats to a season-best 49.300. Carreiro transferred in 2007 from Western Kentucky’s diving program and instantly made a splash with the Cats’ beam lineup. The Lexington native proved to be a dependable asset to the team, competing in 11 of this year’s meets.

Kentucky Rules in Academics The University of Kentucky gymnastics team placed nine student-athletes on the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll, two of which were freshmen. The gymnastics team had the second most athletes listed on the honor roll. A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution. Jacque Behrendt, Bridget Carreiro, Hillary Ferguson, Emily Green, Storey Morris, Phylicia Reshard, Whitney Rose, Natalie Rubinstein and Colleen Williams all made the cut.

Hillary Ferguson Senior Swansongs

Wildcats Honored by SEC Younger talent shined during the 2009 season and it didn’t go unrecognized. Freshman Whitney Rose was named SEC Freshman of the Year, just the fifth freshman to be awarded the honor in UK history. Rose progressed from vault specialist to one of UK’s all-around performers. She earned three titles in the 2009 season, two on vault and one all-around. The freshman received her first top-honor on vault when she registered a season-high 9.900 against LSU, then bettered the score against Alaska-Anchorage with a career-best 9.925. In the same meet against the Seawolves, Rose used a 9.825 on the balance beam to give her a season-best 39.100 all-around

Kentucky’s win during Senior Night meant so much more than the “W” it earned. UK’s three seniors, Heather Hite, Natalie Rubinstein and Bridget Carreiro were given a farewell like no other. The Wildcats defeated North Carolina, Ball State, and William & Mary while also upsetting No. 15 Illinois. Senior Heather Hite’s 9.850 on floor gave UK the extra push to capture the win. Hite was a leader on both the balance beam and floor exercise for Kentucky. She holds the most career titles on each event and leaves with career high of 9.950 on both apparatuses. The senior led Kentucky 21 times this season while grabbing eight career titles, giving her a total of 27 (16 on beam and 11 on floor). Rubinstein returned this season just in time for her career finale. After being sidelined for two seasons due to injury, she made a remarkable comeback, grabbing all five of her career titles this year on the uneven bars. Not only did she make the lineup, she led the Wildcats 12 times with an average of 59
