hen Kentucky men’s golf head coach Brian Craig and associate head coach David Trainor sat down to look at the 2009-10 roster earlier this year, they couldn’t help but look up at each other and smile. Glancing over the list of talented golfers, Craig and Trainor saw two players, senior Jordan Blann (Kentucky Golf Association) and junior James Kania (Golf Association of Philadelphia), who currently sit atop their respective amateur Player of the Year standings. They also saw one of last year’s mainstays in Ben Fuqua, and a talented junior in Brian Belden, who redshirted last season after an impressive sophomore campaign. It was easy to see why the two were so excited. “What I am most excited about this season is that we are going to have depth,” said Craig, who enters his ninth year as Kentucky’s head man. “We haven’t had this kind of depth in quite a few years and we are going to have a lot of competition for the top five spots. That typically is a good thing because it makes everyone on the team better.”

that depth so that really wasn’t the case.”

On top of Blann, Kania and Fuqua, Kentucky also returns veteran leaders in seniors Derek Oldham and Alex Volpenhein, along with steady sophomores Chase Carpenter and Mads Kristensen. Carpenter took a redshirt year last season, while Kristensen played in all 12 events for UK.

“From a coaching standpoint, you want the kind of depth on your team that pushes each of the guys on the team to get better,” Craig said. “For us, it allows us to create a really competitive environment where the top five guys will rise to the top.

“Right now, you would have to say that our topthree guys are Ben (Fuqua), Jordan (Blann) and James,” Craig said. “But they have no guarantee of going to every tournament if they get a little lax or unmotivated. In the past, we haven’t had

2

2009-10 KENTUCK Y G O L F

If the team wasn’t already deep enough, Craig and Trainor added three extremely talented true freshmen, Michael Kania, Cody Martin and Chase Parker, to the roster. They also have two quality redshirt freshmen in Joseph Barr and Seth Blann.

“On the team itself, it creates what I like to call a ‘healthy tension,’ where you look around the locker room and say, ‘There are a lot of good players in here and a lot of players that could beat me if I don’t step my game up.’ It creates an environment where you are either motivated or

you get left behind, and that is a good thing as far as I am concerned.” Craig says his excitement level rose even more when the team performed as well as it did this summer. Along with Blann, James Kania and Fuqua having great summers, almost every other UK golfer played exceptional in the summer with several golfers posting wins in very competitive events. “I think that this was probably one of the better summers that we have had,” Craig said. “That is a good sign leading into the fall because it shows that guys are doing what they need to do to get better. The summertime is a very important time to work on your game and get better because you have long, warm days and no distractions.” “It is easy to play good in the summer time, but

JORDAN BLANN

college golf is a lot different because you have more to juggle and have to balance more. The guys that play well in the summer don’t always play well in the school year; it is not always a given that happens. I think that these guys are good in the classroom and socially and will be able to balance that out and bring their strong summer play into the college season.” Combined with the all-around depth on the team and the high level of talent that the team leaders have, the 2009-10 men’s golf season could be something special.

T H E TEAM “Kentucky will return its entire roster from last season with the exception of departed Andy Winings, who led the Wildcats in stroke average, top-10 finishes and top-20 finishes last season. Ben Fuqua receiving an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA will help fill the void left by Winings along with the depth of this year’s team and continued strong play of veteran leaders. We are returning three of our top players from last year in Ben Fuqua, Jordan Blann and James Kania," Craig said. "There is no doubt that we will be looking for those three upperclassmen to be strong leaders on this year's team. Mads Kristensen will also be back for his sophomore campaign after gaining invaluable experience last year. I expect our incoming freshmen, Michael Kania, Cody Martin and Chase Parker, to all compete for a spot in the starting lineup along with the returning players. We should have the most competition that we have had in a number of years for the travel team."

UK has had several players this summer take their games to the next level. Seniors Jordan Blann, Fuqua, Oldham and Volpenhein each put together impressive summers. Jordan Blann started the action this summer for Kentucky by winning the Kentucky-Am with an amazing score of 7-under-par in the weather-shortened 36-hole tournament. Fuqua and Oldham also posted strong showings at the Kentucky Am, with Fuqua also finishing tied for 21st in The Players Am and Oldham posting a top-20 finish at the Kentucky Open. Volpenhein’s summer started strong when the senior qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and finished in the top 20 at the Kentucky Am. Probably the most impressive summer put together was by James Kania. The junior from Haverford, Pa., dominated the Golf Association of Philladelphia tournaments and leaderboard. Along with winning the Joseph H. Patterson Cup and the 2009 Braemar Invitational, he advanced through four rounds of tough match-play competition to advance to the finals of the Philly Am. Kania’s summer ended with history, as he and his father became the first father-son duo to each win the Patterson Cup and the Silver Cross award, which is given to the player with the lowest combined aggregate score from the qualifying rounds of the Philly Am and the Patterson Cup. Junior Brian Belden, also a Pennsylvania native, put together a good summer after redshirting last season for Kentucky. Belden was selected as an alternate for the U.S. Public Links Championship after a great 36-hole score in Louisville, Ky. Belden finished his summer extremely strong, with an eighth place amateur finish in the Pennsylvania Open.

JA M E S K A NI A

Kentucky’s underclassmen also had a strong summer, including sophomores Carpenter and Kristensen. Carpenter placed 30th in the Kentucky Am while posting a top-five finish at the Stephens Oil Classic and winning the Cherry Blossom Invitational. Kristensen, who went back to his native country to play this summer in Europe, played in several big tournaments stacked with competition. The native of Denmark finished 14th at the Danish Amateur and won his first two rounds of the Danish Match Play Championship. Kristensen also qualified for the European Amateur Championship. All five of Kentucky’s freshmen posted good summer play as well this year. Joseph Barr and Seth Blann, UK’s two redshirt freshmen, posted good finishes at the Kentucky Am. Barr finished in a tie for 58th while S. Blann finished in a tie for 14th. Seth also won the Western Kentucky Open after sinking a birdie putt to finish the tournament 6-under-par. Barr’s summer concluded with a second-place finish at the 2009 Lexington City Tournament. True freshmen Michael Kania, Martin, and Parker, the three newcomers on the team, roll onto campus after posting brilliant summers. M. Kania finished tied for 22nd at the Philadelphia Open Championship and qualified for the U.S. Amateur. Martin, a native of Union, Ky., finished second at the Kentucky Junior-Am and posted a impressive mark at the Kentucky Open, finishing tied for sixth overall and second in the amateur division. Parker, who comes to UK from Augusta, Ga., played great all summer, with his best finish coming at the Georgia Am, where he finished 23rd. 2 0 0 9 - 1 0 K E N T U CKY GOLF

rguably the best golfer to ever walk the halls of the University of Kentucky was Gay Robert Brewer Jr. The 1949 U.S. Junior Champion attended UK from 1952-54 and went on to a distinguished career on the PGA Tour, which was highlighted by a victory at the 1967 Masters. Brewer received the Ben Hogan Award after the 1972 season for his “courage in the face of trying circumstances” after surviving a near-fatal ulcer attack the night before the ‘72 Masters. A 10-time champion on the PGA Tour, the Middletown, Ohio, native has been a member of the Senior PGA Tour since 1982 with his lone victory coming at the 1984 Citizens Union Seniors held in Kentucky. He was also a member of the 1967 and 1971 United States Ryder Cup teams. In his 43-year career as a professional golfer, Brewer earned nearly $3 million in prize money and made his 37th Masters appearance in April 2001. Brewer was elected to the University of Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. In the summer of 2007, the city of Lexington renamed Picadome Golf Course the Gay Brewer Jr. Golf Course at Picadome. Mr. Brewer lost a long battle with cancer, passing away at his residence on Aug. 31, 2007. He was 75. In June, more than 300 people turned out to honor Mr. Brewer at Picadome Golf Course, where he learned the game 60 years ago. Bobby Nichols, Bob Goalby and Lou Graham, all of whom won major championships on the PGA tour, attended. Brewer called having the course named after him “a great thrill, beyond anything I expected.” A portrait of Brewer in his green Masters jacket was unveiled to hang in the course pro shop.

fter winning his second FBR Open in 2008 and having the biggest moment of his professional career by winning the 2008 Ryder Cup, former Wildcat J.B. Holmes continued his climb up the PGA Tour rankings with a second-place finish at the Shell Houston Open and three top-25 finishes in 2009. At the Shell Houston Open, Holmes was the leader in the clubhouse after posting an impressive 3-under-par on the final round to finish the tournament at 11-under-par. Paul Casey, ranked No. 6 in the world rankings, bogeyed the final hole of the tournament to tie Holmes and cause a playoff to decide the winner. Casey would defeat Holmes on the first playoff hole to claim the tournament title. In 2008, Holmes represented the American squad in the 2008 Ryder Cup, scoring 2 1/2 points to help secure the victory over Europe in dramatic fashion when he birdied the 17th hole at Valhalla Golf Club to defeat Soren Hansen in individual play. With Holmes’ help, the United States won its first Ryder Cup since 1999.

Holmes opened his professional career in 2006 with a 10th-place finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii, his first start as a TOUR member. He was only two back of the leaders through 36 holes, but could not catch a hot David Toms (61-65) on the weekend. In his fourth start of the season, fifth as a professional, Holmes earned his first TOUR victory at the 2006 FBR Open. Holmes led J.J. Henry and Ryan Palmer by one stroke through 54 holes prior to defeating five players by seven strokes, the largest victory margin in a player's first TOUR win since Jose Maria Olazabal won the 1990 NEC World Series of Golf by 12 strokes. Holmes posted all four rounds in the 60s, including the final round's only bogey-free round, a 5-under 66. His secondround 64 is a career best. Holmes is the ninth player to collect his initial TOUR win at the FBR Open and first since Jesper Parnevik in 1998. He was the youngest player at 23 years, nine months and nine days to win the Phoenix tournament since Jerry Pate won in 1977 at age 23 years, three months and three days. Holmes also became the first rookie to win on TOUR in 2006 and topped Retief Goosen's record of becoming the quickest player to reach $1 million in his TOUR career as a member, earning that amount in just four events. Holmes went from not being ranked in the official World Golf Ranking at the beginning of the 2006 season to No. 77 after the win. He added three top-10 finishes in 2007, including a fourthplace finish at the Mercedes-Benz Championship in January. Holmes finished the 2009 season with two runner-up finishes and three top25 finishes. Other than his second-place performance at the Shell Houston Open, Holmes finished tied for sixth at the Northern Trust Open and tied for 16th at the RBC Canadian Open.

OHIO CASUALTY CENTER FOR ACADEMIC & TUTORIAL SEVICES

T

he University of Kentucky has made a commitment to put the student-athlete at the heart of the program. The cornerstone of that commitment lies in the academic success of the University’s student-athletes. And at UK, that success stems from the resources within the Ohio Casualty Group’s Center for Academic and Tutorial Services. UK opened CATS in 1981, the nation’s first academic center dedicated exclusively to student-athletes. Over the years, as the services offered by CATS have grown, so did the need for additional space. As a result, UK built a new facility - the Ohio Casualty Center for Academic and Tutorial Services - thanks to a one-million dollar grant from the Ohio Casualty Insurance Group. The Ohio Casualty Center opened in 1998 at a total cost of $2.4 million. Much of the credit for UK’s academic success goes to the Athletics Association’s academic support system. CATS, constructed in Memorial Coliseum, includes: > 20,000 square feet of space - more than double the size of the former CATS facility > a computer room housing 35 computers > a study area which accommodates 90-100 people > 24 tutoring rooms > a career development and life skills

resource center > a community outreach office > offices for the staff. Certainly, a facility is a good start, but any program - especially in academics - is only as good as the people who run it. And UK is fortunate to have outstanding leaders in its academics support system. Bob Bradley, associate athletics director for Student Services, oversees the CATS program. Bradley was named National Academic Advisor of the Year in 1989 and 1992. In 2000, he was selected as the CHAMPS Life Skills Coordinator of the Year by the NCAA Division I-A Athletic Directors Association.

We look at each studentathlete’s individual needs, set goals and develop strategies to attain those goals. Our center provides our student-athletes with a definite advantage over student-athletes at many other institutions. Our goal is to show that we care about the student as well as the athlete.” For the CATS staff, showing you care means more than helping athletes maintain eligibility, graduate or win awards. The academics staff also prepares student-athletes for life after college with the Wildcat Career Development Program.

ee T. Todd, Jr. became the 11th president of the University of Kentucky on July 1, 2001, after serving as senior vice president of IBM’s Lotus Development Corp. President Todd is the sixth UK alumnus to hold the presidency. President Todd has concentrated his efforts and energies on helping his alma mater achieve a greater level of national prominence. He launched the University of Kentucky’s top-20 Business Plan in December 2005. The plan is a quantitative analysis highlighting what it will take for UK to achieve its state-mandated goal of building a Top 20 public research university. Widely hailed as the first business plan by a public university in the nation, UK’s plan garnered widespread national attention. It has been featured by national media outlets and recognized by peer institutions, as several higher education leaders have visited UK’s campus to learn more about the Business Plan approach. He continues to champion UK’s outreach efforts. President Todd launched a university-funded

research program called the Commonwealth Collaboratives. The initiative features 36 of UK’s top research teams, who are focused on solving the intrinsic problems that have held the state back from reaching its full potential. It is part of UK’s effort to ensure that its research hits the ground in Kentucky and changes lives throughout the Commonwealth. President Todd has spearheaded an effort to revitalize health care in Kentucky. In June 2006, UK unveiled the Commonwealth’s Medical Campus of the Future, a multi-phased project aimed at providing Kentuckians with cuttingedge, 21st century health care. As part of the revamped academic medical campus, UK will construct a new, one million square foot University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital and a new College of Pharmacy. President Todd is chair of the board of directors and executive committee for the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. He also is president of the Southeastern Conference executive committee. President Todd serves on the equitable resources board of directors and is chair of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics Task Force. He is chair of the National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education’s Leveraging Excellence Award selection panel. President Todd also is a member of the Business Higher Education Forum and the Council on Competitiveness. itch Barnhart is in his eighth year at the University of Kentucky, with unparalleled accomplishments in his past and unprecedented goals for the future. When he arrived in 2002, Barnhart’s first move was to totally support all 22 varsity sports with the maximum number of scholarships and coaches, along with the facilities, equipment and support staff needed to make those teams successful. The commitment to fully fund every sport produced never-before-seen successes in UK athletics, with first-ever Southeastern Conference championships in baseball, men’s golf and women’s tennis. Perhaps the biggest on-field turnaround has been in football, where Barnhart’s hire of Rich Brooks has led the Wildcats to bowl wins in three consecutive years, the first time that has been accomplished in UK’s 117 seasons in the sport. In order to make the dreams a reality, Barnhart spearheaded record-breaking growth in

philanthropic giving, ticket sales and a comprehensive multi-media rights agreement. Barnhart’s connection to UK student-athletes is evident by his individual interaction and dedication to provide the support services necessary to meet their needs. UK Athletics spends more than $1.5 million annually on its nationally renowned Center for Academic and Tutorial Services. He also began the CATSPYs, an annual awards program that honors the best of UK Athletics. Additional initiatives begun under Barnhart’s leadership include the UK Athletics Hall of Fame and the Joe Craft Center, a $30 million facility that includes new practice and administrative space for a variety of sports. Barnhart’s influence reaches far beyond the fields of competition. Despite athletics’ urgent financial needs, Barnhart initiated a $1.2 million annual contribution to the University’s scholarship program, a contribution that is being increased to $1.7 million this year. Social responsibility in the Commonwealth of Kentucky is a priority for Barnhart, who has been extremely active in community service and encourages the UK athletics staff to do the same.

Not content with past successes, Barnhart’s ambitious course for the future was revealed with his recent announcement of the “15x15x15” plan. The goals are to win at least 15 conference or national championships and rank among the NCAA’s top 15 athletic programs by 2015 – all of which would represent unprecedented achievements for UK Athletics – while continuing to expand UK Athletics’ service to the local community and commonwealth of Kentucky. Another goal of the initiative is a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average for UK’s 500 student-athletes. Barnhart arrived at Kentucky from Oregon State, where he served four successful years (19982002) as athletics director. Before his term at OSU, he worked in athletics administration posts at Tennessee (1986-98), Southern Methodist University (1983-86), Oregon (1983) and San Diego State (1982-1983). Barnhart, 50, is a native of Kansas City, Kan. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ottawa University (Kansas) in 1981 and a masters in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. He and his wife, the former Connie Brown, have three children, Kirby, Blaire and Scott.
