HEAD COACH DON WEBER E

ntering his 28th season as head coach at the University of Kentucky, Don Weber has seen NCAA Champions, AllAmerica honors, Conference Champions and academic honors. Overall, he has dedicated his time and passion over the past 34 years including the seven seasons Weber served as head cross country coach and as an assistant coach for track and field. Weber has built Kentucky into the prestigious program that it is today. A veteran to the Southeastern Conference, Weber’s coaching tenure at UK is the longest among his peers in the league. Weber has spearheaded track and field and cross country at UK since 1984, and under his direction, the program has become a staple at the national championships. National success quickly followed after Weber was elevated to direct the program. His 1985 women’s cross country team finished fourth at the NCAA Championships. The Wildcats improved the following year with a third-place national finish, leading up to his crowning achievement. In 1988, Weber guided the UK women’s cross country team to the NCAA National Championship title. At the same national championship event, the men’s team finished eighth. In 1989, the women’s squad returned to the championship as the national runnerup. In 2008, Weber helped guide a new generation to the national stage as the women’s team made its fifth postseason appearance at the NCAA Championships. In recognition of the Wildcats’ success on

the cross country course, Weber was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1988. Prior to that, he was honored as NCAA District III Coach of the Year in 1985. In both of those years, he also received the SEC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Weber has been named SEC Women’s Coach of the Year three times (1985, 1988 and 1989) and was Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year in 1995. After more than two decades at the helm of the Kentucky program, Weber’s athletes have earned 187 NCAA All-America honors and six Wildcats have won 10 NCAA individual national championships. He has also coached a total of 106 SEC individual champions. During Weber’s tenure at Kentucky, Wildcat cross country and track and field athletes have consistently been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Weber’s prolific coaching career stems from his vast experience as a Kentucky athlete and former SEC Champion. As a student-athlete, Weber participated in track and cross country at UK from 1968-72. In 1970, he helped his team to the SEC Cross Country Championship, which led to an All-SEC honor in cross country. Weber also received All-SEC honors in indoor track from 1968-72. He was the SEC 1,000yard champion in 1972, establishing a thenconference record with a time of 2:10.20. Weber received the UK Athletic Leadership Award the same year. In addition to all of his honors and records, he was named captain of both the cross country and track squads. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from UK in education in 1973, he began his coaching career at Jesse Stuart High School in Louisville. Following two successful years at the high school level, he entered the collegiate ranks

as an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Murray State University in Murray, Ky. While coaching the Racers, Weber earned a master’s degree in secondary education. In 1975, the Concentracion Deportiva de Pinchincha (the Sports Committee of the Ecuadorian State of Pichincha) selected Weber as the National and Olympic Track and Field Coach and to guide the team at the Montreal Summer Games. Following the 1976 Olympics, Weber returned to the United States to serve as the assistant coach at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan., before joining the coaching staff at his alma mater in 1978. ASST. COACH THOMAS MORGAN T

homas Morgan, former University of Kentucky student-athlete and 2003 Southeastern Conference cross-country champion, is entering his second season as assistant coach of distance events with UK. “I am thrilled to have Thomas returning to UK as my assistant coach,” said head coach Don Weber one year ago. “He’s not only returning to UK, but his hometown of Lexington as well. As a former UK athlete I know how meaningful the opportunity to coach at UK was to me, and I am certain it is meaningful to Thomas. “In 30 years of coaching at UK, Thomas was one of our all-time success stories as a student and as an athlete, so bringing him back into the program is very exciting, rewarding and comforting to me. Thomas will be a great role model for our athletes. He started his UK career with modest athletic credentials, but based on who he is, he developed into one of the nation’s very best collegiate distance runners while simultaneously excelling in the classroom.” Morgan joins Kentucky after a five-year stint with the Zap Fitness Foundation, Inc., as a professional athlete and support staff member.

While at Zap Fitness, he traveled to countless domestic competitions of all levels and took five trips to Europe, meeting many influential figures in the track and field community. As a support staff member and camp counselor, Morgan provided support in hosting running camps that included speaking to groups of up to 500 people on running-related topics such as nutrition, lifestyle, mental strategies and racing experiences. "I consider it a great privilege to return to the institution that provided me so many opportunities, both athletically and academically,” Morgan said. “I am looking forward to providing that same opportunity to the current student-athletes and fostering an environment of success." In 2004 and 2008, Morgan qualified and participated in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 5,000-meter run as a member of Zap Fitness. Using the experience gained in 2004, Morgan had his best performance at the trials in 2008 when he placed 10th in the 5,000m run with a time of 13:47.76. Also in 2008, he finished ranked in the top-100 5,000m runners in the world and seventh-fastest American with a time of 13:27.45. While at the University of Kentucky, Morgan was a two-time All-America honoree for his performance in the distance medley relay in 2001 and 2003. The former Wildcat student-athlete was also a five-time All-SEC performer, twice in

5

cross country, once in indoor track and twice for outdoor track. He was a seven-time NCAA Championship qualifier as well, twice in cross country, three times in indoor track and twice during the outdoor season. Morgan broke a 32year-old school record in the 5,000m run during his final outdoor season at Kentucky with a time of 13:45.57. He stands in the top five in three events, and the top 10 in three other events in the Kentucky record books, including first in the outdoor 5,000m, third in the indoor 3,000m, fourth in the indoor 5,000m, sixth in the indoor mile, sixth in the outdoor 1,500m and sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase. Morgan graduated in May 2003 from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor of business administration in finance and later a masters of business administration in 2005.
