RIFLE FACILITIES
T
he University of Kentucky rifle range is located on the ground floor of Barker Hall, which also houses the UK ROTC offices. Although other groups are allowed use of the facility, the range is used primarily for UK rifle practices and matches. The range has 12 firing points on which the Wildcats shoot both air rifle and smallbore. All equipment is stored on the range and team members have access to practice at any time. In 1995, the range underwent a $100,000 renovation which included a new backstop, upgraded target system, and increased storage area. During the 2006-07 season, the squad transitioned into a new electronic target system which makes the sport much more spectator friendly.
“UK’s range is centrally located in the heart of campus, which allows our student-athletes a convenient place to practice. The addition of electronic targets provides our shooters with a great training environment in which to prepare for international competition and the NCAA Championships.” >>Head Coach Harry Mullins

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING CHAD HUSTKO
T
he Kentucky rifle team calls Nutter Training Center its home for strength and conditioning. The complex is under the direction of coach Chad Hutsko and features a variety of free weight equipment, which complements the training philosophy of the Shively staff.
Chad Hutsko is in his fourth year as Kentucky's head strength and conditioning coach for the rifle team. He also serves as the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the nationally-ranked football team, helping the Wildcats to one of the most successful three-year runs in the history of the program.
The primary focus of the facility is the development of core strength using ground-based, multi-joint lifting through use of the Olympic lifts. The core of the athlete’s body also is trained and complemented with a variety of lifts, including squats, lunges, plyometrics, presses, pulls, trunk rotation and abdominal exercise. Through the combination of these exercises, the athletes are better able to reach their goals.
Hutsko, who joined the UK staff in March of 2005, is no stranger to the UK athletics department. The native of McKeesport, Pa., began his coaching career with the Wildcats as an intern in the weight room from 1994-96. Following two seasons at UK, Hutsko spent four years at the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant strength coach. He served as a volunteer coach in the Pitt weight room during the summers of 1996 and 1997 before being hired as the assistant strength coach in 1998. In his four seasons at Pitt (1998-01), the Panthers advanced to two bowl games. Pitt met Iowa State in the 2000 Insight.com bowl and defeated North Carolina State in the 2001 Tangerine Bowl. He also worked with the baseball, softball, and volleyball teams while at Pitt.
With the help of a staff nutritionist, the Shively staff also helps educate the athletes on nutrition and supplement awareness. The rifle squad trains together at Shively, promoting team chemistry and teamwork. Through this set-up, teams work on mental toughness, attacking goals and maintaining a positive attitude, keeping everyone moving toward a common goal.
Hutkso has trained many successful student-athletes in his career, including 2000 Biletnikoff Award winner Antonio Bryant. In 2002, Hutsko moved into personal training, spending three years (2002-05) at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville, Pa. He also served as the head strength coach at South Allegheny High School in Liberty Boro, Pa., and Clairton High School in Clairton, Pa. during that time. Hutsko graduated from Penn State with a degree in health education and is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
“I am extremely excited to have Chad Hutsko working with our program again this year. He has a pulse on what the team needs and realizes that we are not trying to build them into hulks, but concentrating on building core strength. Even though it is pain, blood, sweat and tears, the team really enjoys the workout sessions because Coach Hutsko keeps them motivated and highly productive.” >> Head Coach Harry Mullins 4

CENTER FOR ACADEMIC & TUTORIAL SERVICES
T
he University of Kentucky has made a commitment to put the student-athlete at the heart of the program. The cornerstone of that commitment lies in the academic success of the University’s student-athletes. And at UK, that success stems from the resources within the Ohio Casualty Group’s Center for Academic and Tutorial Services (CATS).
CATS STA F F
UK opened CATS in 1981, the nation’s first academic center dedicated exclusively to student-athletes. Over the years, as the services offered by CATS have grown, so did the need for additional space. As a result, UK built a new facility - the Ohio Casualty Center for Academic and Tutorial Services, thanks to a one-million dollar grant from the Ohio Casualty Insurance Group. The Ohio Casualty Center opened in 1998 at a total cost of $2.4 million.
Bob Bradley Associate Athletics Director
Much of the credit for UK’s academic success goes to the Athletics Association’s academic support system the Center for Academic and Tutorial Services, or simply, “CATS.”
Barbara Deniston Director of Academic Services
CATS, CONSTRUCTED IN MEMORIAL COLISEUM, INCLUDES: >> 20,000 square feet of space - more than double the size of the former CATS facility >> A computer room housing 35 computers
Mike Haley Director of Advising Services
>> A study area which accommodates 90-100 people >> 24 tutoring rooms
Amy Craiglow Academic Counselor
>> A career development and life skills resource center >> A community outreach office >> Offices for the staff. Certainly, a facility is a good start, but any program - especially in academics - is only as good as the people who run it. And UK is fortunate to have outstanding leaders in its academics support system.
Dustin Lewis Life Skills Coordinator
Bob Bradley, Associate Athletics Director for Student Services, oversees the CATS program. Bradley was named National Academic Advisor of the Year in 1989 and 1992. In 2000 he was selected as the CHAMPS Life Skills Coordinator of the Year by the NCAA Division I-A Athletic Directors Association.

D R. LEE T. TODD, JR., PRESIDENT
L
ee T. Todd, Jr. became the 11th president of the University of Kentucky on July 1, 2001, after serving as senior vice president of IBM’s Lotus Development Corp. President Todd is the sixth UK alumnus to hold the presidency.
President Todd has concentrated his efforts and energies on helping his alma mater achieve a greater level of national prominence. He launched the University of Kentucky’s top-20 Business Plan in December 2005. The plan is a quantitative analysis highlighting what it will take for UK to achieve its state-mandated goal of building a Top 20 public research university. Widely hailed as the first business plan by a public university in the nation, UK’s plan garnered widespread national attention. It has been featured by national media outlets and recognized by peer institutions, as several higher education leaders have visited UK’s campus to learn more about the Business Plan approach. He continues to champion UK’s outreach efforts. President Todd launched a universityfunded research program called the Commonwealth Collaboratives. The initiative features 36 of UK’s top research teams, who are focused on solving the intrinsic problems that have held the state back from reaching its full potential. It is part of UK’s effort to ensure that its research hits the ground in Kentucky and changes lives throughout the Commonwealth. President Todd has spearheaded an effort to
revitalize health care in Kentucky. In June 2006, UK unveiled the Commonwealth’s Medical Campus of the Future, a multi-phased project aimed at providing Kentuckians with cuttingedge, 21st century health care. As part of the revamped academic medical campus, UK will construct a new, one million square foot University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital and a new College of Pharmacy. President Todd is chair of the board of directors and executive committee for the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. He also is president of the Southeastern Conference executive committee. President Todd serves on the equitable resources board of directors and is chair of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Task Force. He is chair of the National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education’s Leveraging Excellence Award selection panel. President Todd also is a member of the Business Higher Education Forum and the Council on Competitiveness. He is married to the former Patricia Brantley, a UK graduate who earned her master’s degree from Simmons College in Boston. They have two

itch Barnhart is in his eighth year at the University of Kentucky, with unparalleled accomplishments in his past and unprecedented goals for the future.
When he arrived in 2002, Barnhart’s first move was to totally support all 22 varsity sports with the maximum number of scholarships and coaches, along with the facilities, equipment and support staff needed to make those teams successful.
meet their needs. UK Athletics spends more than $1.5 million annually on its nationally renowned Center for Academic and Tutorial Services. He also began the CATSPYs, an annual awards program that honors the best of UK Athletics.
The commitment to fully fund every sport produced never-before-seen successes in UK athletics, with first-ever Southeastern Conference championships in baseball, men’s golf and women’s tennis.
Additional initiatives begun under Barnhart’s leadership include the UK Athletics Hall of Fame and the Joe Craft Center, a $30 million facility that includes new practice and administrative space for a variety of sports. Barnhart’s influence reaches far beyond the fields of competition. Despite athletics’ urgent financial needs, Barnhart initiated a $1.2 million annual contribution to the University’s scholarship program, a contribution that is being increased to $1.7 million this year. Social responsibility in the Commonwealth of Kentucky is a priority for Barnhart, who has been extremely active in community service and encourages the UK athletics staff to do the same. Not content with past successes, Barnhart’s ambitious course for the future was revealed with his recent announcement of the “15x15x15” plan. The goals are to win at least 15 conference or national championships and rank among the NCAA’s top 15 athletic programs by 2015 – all of which would represent unprecedented achievements for UK Athletics – while continuing to expand UK Athletics’ service to the local community and commonwealth of Kentucky. Another goal of the initiative is a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average for UK’s 500 student-athletes. Barnhart arrived at Kentucky from Oregon State, where he served four successful years (1998-2002) as athletics director. Before his term at OSU, he worked in athletics administration posts at Tennessee (1986-98), Southern Methodist University (1983-86), Oregon (1983) and San Diego State (1982-1983).
Perhaps the biggest on-field turnaround has been in football, where Barnhart’s hire of Rich Brooks has led the Wildcats to bowl wins in three consecutive years, the first time that has been accomplished in UK’s 117 seasons in the sport.
Barnhart, 50, is a native of Kansas City, Kan. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ottawa University (Kansas) in 1981 and a masters in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.
In order to make the dreams a reality, Barnhart spearheaded recordbreaking growth in philanthropic giving, ticket sales and a comprehensive multi-media rights agreement.
He and his wife, the former Connie Brown, have three children, Kirby, Blaire and Scott.
Barnhart’s connection to UK student-athletes is evident by his individual interaction and dedication to provide the support services necessary to

2009-10 PREVIEW
R
epresenting Kentucky athletics is a responsibility that carries championship expectations each and every season. The UK rifle program is no stranger to expectations of excellence and head coach Harry Mullins embraces them.
“Entering every season, the expectations are always the same,” Mullins explained. “Win the NCAA Championships, win the Great American Rifle Conference and push every athlete to be an All-American.”
valuable experience that will lead them into their senior year.” Megan English and Ethan Settlemires are Kentucky’s two sophomores and a year ago the duo stepped into the UK lineup immediately and became some of the top freshmen in the nation.
Mullins, who is entering is 23rd year at the helm of the UK rifle program, led the Wildcats to a second-place finish in the NCAA Championships a year ago, their ninth consecutive season finishing in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships.
“Typically in our sport, it’s very hectic being a freshman and balancing everything between life, school and rifle,” Mullins said. “Megan and Ethan now have that first year of school complete. Both will play an integral part in producing some of those 590s in air rifle and 580s in smallbore when postseason time comes.”
“To finish last season in second place at the NCAA Championships was bittersweet,” Mullins detailed. “To be in a position to win on the final day and coming up short is a difficult way to end the season.”
UK’s incoming freshmen feature acclaimed recruits Katie Fretts and Heather Greathouse and two Kentucky natives, James Jasis and Stacy Wheatley. The four make up one of the top incoming classes in the nation.
Coming into the 2009-10 season, Kentucky has a clear goal: improve everything. “Our biggest goal for the season is to improve the team from top to bottom and get our numbers consistent,” Mullins stated. “We have good talent coming in and a strong senior class to lead us.”
“You have to take these athletes coming in and shape them in the direction they want to go,” Mullins stated. “All are very shapeable and very receptive to coaching with a strong competitive desire. Katie and Heather have shown strong promise and James and Stacy have tons of heart being from Kentucky.
UK is lead by its four seniors Leslie Angeli, Thomas Csenge, Ashley Jackson and Jennifer Pason. “Tom brings enthusiasm, knowledge and passion to the team,” Mullins said. “He is a champion and we really want to max out every bit of potential he has this season. He can break lots of records this season or at least will be very close to doing so.”
“It’s going to be a tough task for this freshmen class to live up to the senior class. It is possible, though, that through hard work and doing the right things they can be just as good as the seniors at certain points or at the end of their career.”
For Mullins, the term “finish” really fits this year for the senior class. As always, UK will play a challenging schedule, featuring tests from Army, Murray State, Nebraska, Texas Christian and West Virginia, while shooting in the very competitive Great American Rifle Conference, a year after winning the regular-season and conference championships.
“We recruited these seniors to win national championships and we’ve fallen short so far,” Mullins said. “For them to finish what they started their freshman year is key and the number one goal.” The Wildcats return juniors Sarah Broeker and Logan Fox. Mullins says it’s time for them to “make a move.”
“The main preparation of the schedule is to get us in the mindset to compete against one person and one thing. That one person is ourselves and that one thing is the course,” Mullins stated. “Being able to go to compete against quality programs helps prepare and teach us how to put up numbers anywhere, anyhow, under any circumstance, against any opponent.”
“Sarah and Logan have learned a lot the past two years,” Mullins said. “Both have put up big numbers and shown sparks of promise, now they need to close the deal and start preparing for being seniors. We will see good performances and good things out of them this year. They will also gain

Mullins has coached several great shooters, including 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Nancy Napoliski and former NCAA Woman Athlete of the Year nominee, Taryn Lewis. Mullins has also helped mentor outstanding young shooters Mary Elsas, a four-time first-team All American in both smallbore and air rifle, and Bradley Whelldon a silver medalist in the 2003 Pan American Games. The rifle program is also perennially one of the most successful academic programs in the nation, as numerous rifle shooters have been honored with academic All-American honors.

He is really getting a feel for what his limitations are and pushing himself through them. I see some great things in his future if he stays focused and works hard.” >> Head Coach Harry Mullins 22

2008-09 SEASON IN REVIEW
P
erhaps no one knows the importance of precision better than Kentucky rifle coach Harry Mullins. In the sport where the smallest measurement makes the biggest difference, the 2008-09 Wildcats came up just short at the NCAA Championships, dropping their bid for the program’s first national title by just five points.
Make no mistake, the 2008-09 Kentucky team penned another impressive chapter in the lore of dominance by the Wildcat rifle squad. It marked the school’s third all-time runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships and is an addition to a legend that includes 16 top-10 finishes in the last 17 years. But it wasn’t precisely what Mullins had in mind for his team.
international events, and needed to win consecutive matches to secure its third conference championship since 2003 in Oxford, Miss. The Wildcats posted a 4626-4565 victory against Ole Miss, putting them one win away from the Great American Rifle Conference Championship. One day later, Kentucky used a 4615-4515 win against North Carolina State to capture the league championship.
“We had an excellent season last year, but we are looking forward to taking the next step,” Mullins said. “We are going to have to work very hard this season to make sure those points come down on our side.”
“I am really excited for the team,” Mullins said after his team clinched the league title. “This was one of our goals that we set out with last year, to go undefeated in the conference. It just shows the hard work the kids are putting in to come out and shoot good numbers without three of our big guns.”
UK opened the 2008-09 season with a solid performance against Ohio State, as the Wildcats charted a 4634-4564 victory. Freshmen Megan English and Ethan Settlemires posted impressive scores in their first-career matches in the starting lineup. Settlemires posted a match-high 199 in prone smallbore to finish with a 576. English recorded a 572 in smallbore and 586 in air rifle.
The Wildcats returned home to the friendly confines of Barker Hall to play host to an NCAA qualifier in Lexington. UK topped its previous seasonbest performance of 4670 against Nebraska in Fairbanks, Alaska. Csenge and Andrew Roland helped spark the Wildcats first team.
Kentucky then traveled far west to Fairbanks, Alaska, to take on two-time NCAA Champion Alaska-Fairbanks. Despite a match-high 592 score in air rifle from junior Ashley Jackson, the Wildcats suffered their first defeat of the season by a score of 4651-4635. Though the loss was UK’s first in a dual-meet match in the last three seasons, Mullins felt like the Wildcats would be able to learn from the experience to help the team down the road.
“I was really pleased, we are on that path where we want to be as far as moving forward and steadily improving,” Mullins said. “We got a couple of really big scores on the first team in Tom and Andrew’s performances and that really sparked us. We left some points off the board and will need to work to continue to shoot scores in the 4670s.”
“Overall, I felt like the team worked hard, we just did not have the right mindset going into the second half of the match,” Mullins said following that match. “It seemed like we were too tight and that got us in smallbore. This was one of our lowest smallbore scores in the past few years.”
Kentucky made a return trip to Oxford and came away with its second trophy of the season. Just a month removed from claiming the GARC regular-season championship with an undefeated regular season, the Wildcats posted a 4650 total score to win the GARC Tournament.
Kentucky stayed in the Last Frontier to take on Nebraska, rebounding with a 4670-4606 victory, led by All-American Tom Csenge’s match-high 1177 total score. He totaled a club-best 198 in smallbore prone, as well as team highs in standing (192) and kneeling (197).
Kentucky had to withstand a strong push from West Virginia in the air rifle portion of the match Sunday, after UK shot a match-leading 2310 in smallbore Saturday. The Wildcats finished second to the Mountaineers in air rifle Sunday, posting a 2340, second to WVU’s 2350 in air rifle. West Virginia finished second with a 4645 overall score.
The Wildcats then returned home for a trio of matches, coming away with four victories, including wins against UT-Martin, Army, Memphis and West Virginia. Junior Leslie Angeli tallied a personal-best 589 in air rifle to lead Kentucky to the victory against the Mountaineers.
Back to Fort Worth for the NCAA Championships, Kentucky was unable to emerge with its third championship of the season. After the Friday smallbore competition, UK sat one point shy of the first-place team, Jacksonville State. The Wildcats were led in smallbore by Jackson, who narrowly lost the individual smallbore national title by .001 of a point.
The Wildcats closed out their 2008 fall season with a trip to Fort Worth, Texas, site of the 2009 NCAA Championships to face TCU. Led by Jackson’s 594 in air rifle and Csenge’s match-high 1169 overall, Kentucky posted a 4647-4636 win against the Horned Frogs.
Kentucky’s second-place finish bettered its fifth-place finish the year before. It was, indeed, another fine chapter in the Wildcat annals, but in 2009-10, Mullins is looking to write the epic tale with his team taking the next step.
UK welcomed in-state foe Murray State to Lexington to commence the 2009 part of the team’s schedule. Numerous Wildcats charted personal-best scores to help the team to its eighth consecutive win and help get the team off to a strong start during the spring slate. Kentucky was without three of its top shooters, who were participating in
