HOW DID YOUR APPROACH DIFFER IN RELATION TO DESIGNING EDGE FROM DESIGNING, FOR EXAMPLE, A LUXURY HOTEL ROOM? It didn’t really. The process was the same, but the execution is different because of the sheer scale of the ship. The design process started with understanding Celebrity Cruises’ vision, and then with me adding in thoughts about where things needed a change.
MEET THE DESIGNER Challenged with leaving traditional thinking in our wake, Kelly took the lead in designing Celebrity Edge’s accommodations, The Retreat, Luminae at the Retreat and The Spa.
INTERVIEW WITH KELLY: WHAT SORT OF CHALLENGE DID DESIGNING EDGE PRESENT? It was a new and exciting challenge! In the past I’d designed private yachts that were large, but to design a ship of this magnitude was something totally different. My design aesthetic remained entirely the same; classic timeless luxury paired with clean lines, soft tones and splashes of colour. What I did need to consider though, were the types of materials being used. Materials and textures are always such a big part of my design that I wasn’t willing to compromise on quality at all. However, I did need to take into consideration things such as health and safety regulations, as well as the weight of certain materials. Once it was clear what we had to avoid and what we could make work, the design part flowed seamlessly.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURES OF THE VESSEL’S DESIGN – IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE?

That’s nearly impossible to answer because I truly love the entire thing, although I have to say The Spa is really incredible. Its huge sculptural reception desk is an amazing piece of furnitureart, and an all-encompassing part of the overall design. I also really love the accommodations, especially the Edge Villas (left), as the space that we had to work with was so interesting. The duplex feel was something totally new on board a ship, and to be able to work on an outside space for it was also great fun.
Mood boards were created, client meetings with long discussions were had, materials sourced, designs signed off and here we are! I always want to create total luxury for my clients – no matter the project, for their visions to become reality, and for the end result to be jaw-dropping. The approach is always the same.
HOW DO YOU BEGIN TO CONCEIVE THE DESIGNS AND PLANS FOR A TASK THIS HUGE? With understanding. You need to understand the client, and in this case also the consumer. It was simple enough to have discussions with the team at Celebrity Cruises, but then you have to extend that to the world’s cruising audience. What would they want to see? What do their imaginations show them when they think of the most amazing cruise ship. Then you have to work at tying that all together into one seamless project. There was a lot of research, inspiration taken from past ships that oozed with class and timeless luxury - but within their own decade. Moving that chic, boundarybreaking feel into 2018 was a big challenge – but one I accepted!
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT CELEBRITY WILL REVOLUTIONISE MODERN LUXURY CRUISING? Absolutely, otherwise I wouldn’t have worked with them. They are a fantastic brand, way ahead of the game in terms of everything to do with cruising. Pairing with people such as myself, who understand whole-heartedly what luxury is, is unbelievably smart.
