MASTER OF JOURNALISM Digital, Entrepreneurial, Investigative
MASTER OF JOURNALISM
YEAR ONE
Journalism today demands new forms of storytelling, new investigative techniques and even new types of news organizations. The Master of Journalism is for journalists who want to lead the way. This two-year program was established in consultation with industry and independent journalists in Canada and abroad. It consists of two streams of study: Data and Investigative journalism and our entrepreneurial program of study known as New Ventures. As the industry continues to evolve, the Master of Journalism addresses the need for journalists to take their skills to a higher level through the application of data, investigative or entrepreneurial techniques. Students produce professional-level work, while building their portfolio, culminating in the delivery of a final project.
In the first year of the Master of Journalism program students gain fundamental journalism skills by completing the coursework for our one-year Bachelor of Journalism. This first year begins in September. Students must maintain and graduate with an average of ‘B’ in order to proceed to Year Two of the Master of Journalism degree.
YEAR TWO The second year of the Master of Journalism begins with a focus on digital storytelling. Students take courses in multimedia reporting and audience engagement. Students then focus on one of two streams: Data and Investigative, or New Ventures. Both streams are built around a core of courses in the craft and economics of digital journalism. Students study full-time on campus until the end of December. Students are not required to be in Halifax in the Winter term. All students produce a final project with the guidance of their mentor in order to graduate.

DATA/INVESTIGATIVE STREAM
PROFESSIONAL PROJECT
Led by multiple-award winning journalist and faculty member Fred Vallance-Jones, the Data and Investigative stream teaches techniques such as data scraping, digital mapping, data set analysis, data visualization and the investigative method. Students who graduate from this stream will be skilled in traditional and emerging investigative techniques. They will be able to create and analyze large sets of data and be able to visualize their findings in an engaging and meaningful way.
Students in both streams work with a professional mentor towards the delivery of their final project. Mentors are working journalists who advise, critique and help students in shaping and creating their submission. Depending on their stream, students produce a data/investigative package suitable for professional publication, or a business plan and prototype of their new journalism enterprise.
NEW VENTURES STREAM The New Ventures stream is led by award-winning journalist Kelly Toughill. It is for journalists who want to develop or create an entirely new journalism enterprise or create projects within an established media organization. Students learn how to identify markets, raise start-up funds and create a business plan. The program blends the expertise of Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Management and the King’s School of Journalism.
