CHIEF EXECUTIVE

The last twenty years have seen an extraordinary leap forward, both in the quality and the quantity of international films that explore Jewish themes. We are proud to have played our part in that development, and in bringing many important films to the attention of audiences and film industry alike, and into the mainstream of British cinema culture. For this landmark anniversary year we are excited to present 80 outstanding new films from 20 countries through more than 120 festival screenings and events in London, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and Nottingham. As always there is the question ‘what makes a film Jewish’? There are no easy answers. It is not only about Jewish ritual and life, but sometimes a Jewish sensibility and state of mind. It is our job to open up the question to debate and discussion and this is part of the excitement and buzz of the Festival.

Israeli cinema is stronger and more varied than ever, and this year’s Festival includes the pick of the crop – from the Sundance Jury Prize Winner Sand Storm, to the Cannes Film Festival competition nominees One Week and a Day and Beyond the Mountains and Hills (from Eran Kolirin, director of The Band’s Visit); not to mention the wry Israeli humour of The 90 Minute War and the untold stories and unseen historical archive from real life stories like Rabin in His Own Words.

We remain passionate and dedicated to supporting and nurturing new creative cinema talent. As well as premiering the two winning films of the 2016 Pears Short Film Fund at UKJF we will be holding a FilmLab day during the festival for those embarking on the first steps in their filmmaking career and anyone who is curious about filmmaking. The FilmLab programme continues throughout the year, as do our extensive education programmes for young people, and the many other festivals, nationwide year-round screenings, and other projects that we run year-round as a cultural charity. Thank you for your support and we look forward to welcoming you soon to celebrate with you this 20th anniversary Festival.

UK INTERNATIONAL JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2016

We are delighted to be opening this 20 Festival with Indignation, a powerful and profound tale about the son of a kosher butcher, based on the Philip Roth novel, and from award-winning American director-screenwriter James Schamus. Poignant and moving, it thoroughly deserves the warm reviews it has been receiving and will be on release in the UK from the end of the Festival. th

Among this year’s huge range of world films are hidden gems of European cinema such as the stylish and gripping French mystery The Origin of Violence, where we will be joined for a Q&A by the director Élie Chouraqui; Polish police detective thriller A Grain of Truth; and sweeping romance in the beautiful Greek drama Cloudy Sunday. From farther afield we are bringing you no less than two new Argentinian dramas, The Tenth Man and Glories of Tango, redolent with the spirit of that country. For the final weekend we will be screening the inspiring true story of Fanny’s Journey, and we will be joined by Fanny Ben Ami.

WELCOME

Welcome from the Chairman Jonathan Lewis CHAIRMAN

Dear film lovers Welcome to the 20th UK International Jewish Film Festival. It is remarkable that 20 years after it was founded by our president Judy Ironside MBE as the Brighton Jewish Film Festival, the Festival continues to grow and thrive attracting an audience at venues around the country of more than 15,000 people. There is a resurgence of interest in all forms of Jewish culture, as the Jewish community – faced with the threats of the BDS movement and antisemitism across Europe – seeks to strengthen its roots in ways that appeal to its diverse make up. Films with Jewish and Israeli connections provide a powerful and accessible way to stimulate interest and understanding of our culture through entertainment. We bring to the UK an amazing variety of films, both features and documentaries, from across the globe, which would not otherwise be shown in this country.

4

In addition, our educational programmes use film to engage young people in Jewish heritage and to combat antisemitism. For young filmmakers we have a new FilmLab project; and our Pears Short Film Fund at UKJF, has entered its 10 th year of producing award-winning films about British-Jewish life. Year-round we have expanded our audiences for Jewish and Israeli films to include cinemas in Manchester, Glasgow, Borehamwood and East Finchley, as well as the JW3 Cinema in London. I am proud to have become chairman of UK Jewish Film following on from Stephen Margolis who did a fantastic job. All the hard work is done thanks to our dedicated team led by our chief executive Michael Etherton, his staff, and our wonderful volunteers. I would like to thank our sponsors without whose support we would be unable to bring these superb films to you. Enjoy the fascinating array of films that we are screening for you this year.

UK INTERNATIONAL JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2016

Over the last 12 months our film programme has reached more people than ever before, not only through our annual festival, now the largest of its kind in Europe with 120 screenings

and more than 50 UK premieres; but also through the Jewish film festivals we run or programme in Geneva, Zurich and Montreal.

Education

Since it started, UK Jewish Film has welcomed over 200,000 visitors to its annual film festivals, making it the largest Jewish film organisation in Europe.

UK Jewish Film’s educational programme puts film at the core of learning about Jewish values, heritage and culture in the UK and beyond.

We are also one of the largest exhibitors of Israeli films in Europe, screening around 40 new titles each year and helping to bring together the UK and Israeli film industries. At the UK Jewish Film Festival in 2015, we hosted over 130 screenings of 84 new international and British features, documentaries and short films. 52 of the films screened at UKIJFF were UK premieres. This year’s Festival will be screening at 20 venues in London, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham.

At UK Jewish Film we are constantly looking for ways to support filmmakers and contribute to the diversity of British filmmaking culture. In 2005, UK Jewish Film established the Pears Short Film Fund at UKJF. This aims to create opportunities for young filmmakers and encourage the creation of short films that engage with Jewish life and culture within the UK. Two grants of £10,000 are available for the production of a short film with a theme of significance to both Jewish and general audiences.

UK Jewish Film is dedicated to developing a culture where Jewish and Israeli films are watched and enjoyed by the widest possible audience. Through film we aim to promote a better understanding, affinity and awareness of Jewish life and to help to diminish prejudices. We also bring a broad range of outstanding British and international films to UK audiences, the majority of which would not otherwise be seen in the UK.

The success of this Fund is evidenced by Billy Lumby’s short, samuel-613. This was the winner of the Pears Short Film Fund at UK Jewish Film in 2014, and has since been nominated for a BAFTA in the Best British Short Film 2016 category. Our 2009 film Sidney Turtlebaum was shortlisted for the Oscars. Other Pears Short Film Fund films have won numerous awards at international festivals. We’ve had some fantastic education programmes this year – our interfaith project included events in Manchester and Bradford with screenings and discussions about faith, identity and belief, together with our partners Three Faiths Forum, Radical Middle Way and Insight Film Festival. Our ‘Lights, Chutzpah, Action!ʼ Project culminated with a fantastic event where the young people involved showcased their work on the big screen. You can find out more and see our education resources by visiting ukjewishfilm/education. With so much going on, make sure you sign up to our newsletter or follow us on social media!

Katie Gilbert HEAD OF MARKETING & MEMBERSHIP

Interfaith education continues to be a strong focus of our work. Promoting better understanding between communities is key to our education mission. With thanks to The Pears Foundation, and working in partnership with The Three Faiths Forum and Radical Middle Way, we offered workshop screenings of a selection of films to interfaith audiences in Bradford and Manchester. Building on the success of this project we have created a new online educational resource to promote film as a tool for opening interfaith conversations: ukjewishfilm.org/belief-in-film

Our Holocaust education through film programme ‘Speak Out’ is paramount in our overall educational work, and includes screening events for non-Jewish pupils, in partnership with city councils. These screenings are followed by a Q&A and supported by online teaching and learning resources developed by UKJF. Teachers have found this resource extremely effective in developing their pupils’ understanding of the Holocaust, and to engage young people with this sensitive subject. UK Jewish Film education team has forged excellent partnerships this year with diverse audiences in both the Jewish and wider community. Working with a Charedi girls group, Teen Action, and The Hackney Museum – supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund – we have enriched our ‘Hackney Roots’ resource to include unique visual and oral histories from the Stamford Hill orthodox community: hackneyroots.org.uk/ourhackney/stamford-hill Our outreach programme has expanded in partnership with UJIA, by offering London schools workshops exploring Jewish film and Israel on Screen. As well as exploring partnership heritage projects with JW3, The United Synagogue and the BFI, we are also developing plans to launch in the near future a UK Jewish Film Youth Festival with films curated and promoted by young people for young people.

Rachel Burns EDUCATION MANAGER

UK INTERNATIONAL JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2016

In the last year we have expanded our YearRound programme so that you can now see a fantastic collection of curated films throughout the year at JW3 and the Phoenix in London, the Reel in Borehamwood, Cineworld in Didsbury and the CCA in Glasgow. Films include Festival favourites and new films that weren’t part of the Festival. We’ve also made some of our films even more accessible through our Video On Demand platform. From the comfort of your own home, you can browse through all types of Jewish and Israeli films and select the one that suits you.

It has been a busy and successful year for UK Jewish Film’s education programme, the highlight of which has been the launch of our brand new project ‘Lights, Chutzpah, Action!’ Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and delivered in partnership with Noam Masorti Youth, young people researched and documented the contribution of British Jewry to film heritage in the UK. Recording the London Jewish memories of film and cinema from the 1930s onwards, they curated unique screening events and created innovative content for our highly acclaimed online resource: ukjewishfilm.org/lights-chutzpah-action

A powerful and profound tale of youthful passion as the gifted son of a kosher butcher from Newark wins a scholarship to better himself at a prestigious university in Mid-West America. Based on the best-selling novel by Philip Roth, the young Marcus – fiercely independent and intellectual – is a straight-A student until he is unexpectedly swept off his feet by blonde bombshell, Olivia Hutton. Oscar-nominated director James Schamus creates an extraordinary portrait of 1950s America where love and idealism are pitted against the unyielding ties and expectations of country, family and tradition.

They have tried it all: wars and peace processes, terror attacks and closures, road checks and Intifadas. After long decades of futile attempts to settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, there is only one solution left: a football match. There are more than 200,000 Jews living in Germany today, including thousands of young Israelis. How has Germany progressed from the Nazi aim to obliterate Jewish life forever to being the country with the fastest growing Jewish community in Europe? Can Germans today accept Jews as merely fellow citizens rather than the children or grandchildren of victims? And why is philosemitism just as dangerous as antisemitism? Bringing together Germans and Jews, this fascinating documentary explores the dramatic changes in German-Jewish relations since 1945.

Keep Quiet is the remarkable story of Hungarian politician Csanád Szegedi, who – as a vocal antisemite and Holocaust denier – came up through the ranks to become vice-President of Jobbik, Hungary’s far-right party. When he discovers that he is in fact Jewish and that his beloved grandmother survived Auschwitz, he goes on an astonishing journey that takes him from the dark depths of hatred to repentance, self-acceptance and reconciliation. Mountain Film Review by The Guardianʼs Jordan Hoffman The enormous Jewish cemetery overlooking Jerusalem takes centre stage in this quiet, slowly unfolding family drama where a woman questions her isolated existence.

UK PREMIERE NOMINATED FOR BEST DEBUT FEATURE AWARD

Mountain LANGUAGE Hebrew w/ English subs GENRE Drama YEAR 2015 LENGTH 81 mins

A stunning film with a powerful punch from first-time Israeli writer-director Yaelle Kayam. Tzvia is a devout woman, married with children, yet inside she feels empty and trapped. Left alone most days in the family’s Mount of Olives home, she has a deadening routine. One evening she goes for a stroll in the nearby cemetery where she observes the prostitutes and drug addicts who inhabit it at night. This encounter awakens in her new unspoken desires and an urgent need for change, no matter what the cost.

Tzvia (Shani Klein) is an Orthodox Jewish mother of four. While she adheres to a strict religious code and boasts about being able to see the Temple Mount from her kitchen window, she is neither wide-eyed zealot nor unkind settler. She is a caring woman, slowly realising that her husband Reuven (Avshalom Pollak) is drifting away. He takes no interest in her sexually and is working longer hours. He is negligent of their children and has virtually no reaction when informed that he has bought the jam Tzvia specifically told him not to buy. In short, he’s a jerk. Tzvia doesn’t have many shoulders to cry on. While the specifics of how and why are a little vague, the family live in solitude in a cold, cave-like house adjacent to the Mount of Olives cemetery. They aren’t caretakers

(there is a chatty Arab who is), but they are there because a “Jewish presence” is preferred. A customary wire separates their house from the acres of stone steps and above-ground tombs. From their vantage point, they can see the Old City of Jerusalem and mixed in with Reuven’s morning Jewish prayers are church bells and Muslim muezzin calls. As the increasingly lonely Tzvia begins taking late-night strolls around the mountain, she sees a couple having sex against a grave. Later, she sees that there is a group that gathers there each night. About six or so men drinking, maybe selling drugs. The women are probably prostitutes, though we don’t actually get that close to business operations. But Tzvia returns time and again to watch. Not so much out of prurience, but just because there’s some life out there with more happening than her own. Shani Klein, who was marvellous as the tough army sergeant in Zero Motivation, is achingly sympathetic. Her character’s physical softness is the visual counterpoint to the sharp, often chipped stones lining the walk to her isolated home. It is an altogether striking character, though the unhurried pace does begin to wear you down. Overlooking Jerusalem from a city of the dead, however, there is more than enough time to take things slowly. The full review can be read at theguardian.com

One of the more obnoxious things critics say about movies is that “the location is a character”. But in Mountain, a quiet, melancholy family drama set almost entirely at the Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, the location really is a character. There appears to be no trick photography and, considering how touchy folks can be about holy places (and considering what goes on in this film), one has to wonder if first-time director Yaelle Kayam lied on her permit applications.

Having started his career as a Rabbi at 70, William Wolff, now nearly 90, is not your average man. Born into an Orthodox family in Berlin, Rabbi Wolff moved to England with his parents at the age of 12. He was a successful political correspondent before deciding on pursuing his dream of becoming a rabbi, a decision that brought him back to his homeland. This heartwarming documentary introduces us to the fascinating and delightful Rabbi Wolff as he travels back and forth between his home in Henley-on-Thames and north-eastern Germany where he serves as a State Rabbi.

After Eran Kolirin’s break-out hit The Band’s Visit, he returned to the 2016 Cannes Film Festival's 'Un Certain Regard’ competition with a compelling and intelligent new feature about an Israeli family in crisis. Lieutenant-Colonel David Greenbaum is discharged after serving for 27 years, returning to his family who are more used to his absence than his presence. When a friend suggests working as a salesman, he sees this as an opportunity to get his foot in the door of the business world and make something of himself. But things don’t turn out as he expects. An accomplished and impressive film from one of Israel’s leading young directors about decent people living in a difficulty reality.

Supported by her famous parents – poet Natan Alterman and actress Rachel Marcus – Tirza Atar also became a well-known artist in Israel the 1960s and 70s. She started out as an actress but made her name as a poet, lyricist and the author of children’s books. Her success, beauty and young family, however, were not enough to save her from recurring bouts of depression and a premature death. Bird in the Room is both a celebration of remarkable creativity and a moving portrayal of a tortured soul.

When your memory fades, your grip on reality becomes fragile and the sense of self slowly slips away. In a synagogue hall in North West London, a group of elderly people gather to find release. Using music and song they try to reconnect with themselves. Through the poetic use of poignant personal photographs and carefully assembled voiced-over memories, this film takes us into the emotional heart of these people coping with the onset of dementia.

“In order to become the person you always wanted to be, you have to, on occasion, become someone else first.” Daniel, an ultra orthodox Jew, hasn’t seen his identical twin brother Mordechai in years; Mordechai’s ‘life choices’ were a bit too much for the family to handle. But today is the day of their father’s funeral… Mordechai is a funny and touching fable about family, faith and the roles we play.

Here in Jerusalem with her feature directorial debut Moon In The 12th House, Dorit Hakim has had a whirlwind three years since returning to Israel from the US. “I barely saw my kids for almost a year while making this movie,” she recalls. The film, which screens at Jerusalem Film Festival (July 7-17) on July 13 and 14, depicts a pair of estranged Israeli sisters who are reunited, forcing them to come to terms with the circumstances that tore them apart. It was nominated for six Ophir awards last year, and had its international premiere at Seattle International Film Festival in May. For Moon In The 12th House, she had to rely on private investors and support from Israeli broadcaster Keshet, the company behind Hatufim, on which US TV series Homeland is based. Hakim notes that she was delighted to have producer David Mandil, a regular collaborator with film-maker Joseph Cedar, on board. “He’s brilliant on the creative side,” says Hakim. “He’s a good mentor, he doesn’t take over, he helps you to find what you need.”

A touching and gently comic family drama that centres on the lives of a Palestinian family in Nazareth and Ramallah. Saleh and Nabella, an ageing couple, are growing apart much to the bewilderment and frustration of Saleh. Their children have fled the stifling atmosphere of home, one to Sweden, the other to Ramallah, where he is desperately hanging on to his singledom, afraid of commitment to the stunning young teacher, Maysa. When brother-in-law Amer is offered an audition in Haifa, the story builds to a moving climax, which touches on the Israeli-Palestinian political context with unexpected sensitivity and poignancy.

A Queer Country takes us on a riveting journey through Israel’s LGBT history. The film celebrates the community’s remarkable achievement in making Israel – Tel Aviv in particular – the gay capital of the Middle East, whilst also considering the oft-heard accusations of so-called ‘pinkwashing’ of other human rights violations. Indeed, the community’s success stories are often overshadowed by the conflicted nature of Israeli society, discriminatory laws and homophobic attacks. While displaying cautious optimism, A Queer Country shows the battle is not yet over.

In this dark and menacing thriller a high-flying Warsaw prosecutor is brought in to investigate a young woman’s strange murder in a small country town. No-nonsense detective, Teo, uncovers a toxic cocktail of fanatical nationalism and racism bubbling away underneath the surface of this close-knit provincial community. A pacy and engrossing detective story, which is also a fascinating exploration of the contemporary Polish perception of Jews, dead and alive, and the worrying persistence of antisemitic myths in the 21st century.

At Barletta, a small town in southern Italy, a quiet but determined hero has brought to life an entire history of forgotten music. For over 20 years, Francesco Lotoro, a professional pianist, has scoured Europe to discover and record music composed clandestinely in World War II camps. Aided by his wife and a handful of friends, he has archived over 4,000 scores, including symphonies, operas, folk songs, liturgical works, swing and gypsy music. From Prague to Krakow, from Rome to Paris, this is the astonishing story of a race against oblivion, where each note sounds like a challenge to the oppressor.

There is an abrasive, snarling humour to this impressive first feature from US-born, Israeliraised writer-director Asaph Polonsky. It occasionally evokes something of the simmering rage that powers the comedy of television show Curb Your Enthusiasm. So when this portrait of a couple mourning the recent death of their son delivers its emotional payload in the third act, it is an unexpectedly devastating moment which more than makes up for the slight dip in momentum which came before. Polonsky resists easy sentimentalisation [and] moments of stillness have real potency This is an accomplished debut which juggles its tonal contrasts adroitly. A tragicomic stoner movie about bereavement, it is a curiosity which should pique the interest of festival audiences. The title refers to the traditional Jewish week of mourning, known as Shiva, which follows immediately after the funeral of the deceased and takes place at the home of an immediate family member. In this case, the home is that of Eyal (Shai Avivi) and Vicky Spivak (Evgenia Dodina), who are coping with the aftermath of their son’s death from cancer in starkly contrasting ways. Vicky, numbed by grief, is clinging to the quotidian routines of normal life to keep afloat. Eyal, the main focus of the film, is rather more unpredictable. Clearly suffering

from temporary impulse control issues, he slaps his female neighbour, brawls with her husband and decides to blaze a trail through the large bag of medicinal marijuana that he retrieves from the hospice when looking for his son’s missing blanket. The first of several skilfully handled moments of physical comedy comes when Eyal attempts to roll his first ever joint. After numerous failed attempts, he admits defeat and enlists the help of Zooler (Tomer Kapon), the deadbeat son of his detested next-door neighbours and a childhood friend of Eyal’s son Ronnie. But while the smokefuelled encounter between Eyal and Zooler, which unfolds over the course of the day after the end of the Shiva period, provides closure for both, Polonsky resists easy sentimentalisation. But the moments of stillness have a real potency: Eyal and Vicky lie wordlessly on their son’s bed next to Zooler, who has passed out. And later, having snapped yet again in the cemetery, Eyal stumbles onto the funeral of the woman who is to be buried next to Ronnie. The voice of the cantor, the official who sings the prayers, is mellifluous and melancholy. But it is the achingly lovely eulogy which follows, accompanied by a glimpse of the life of the man who delivers it, which floors us. The sharing of another man’s grief helps Eyal to finally make sense of his own. This is an abridged version of the article. The full version is available on screendaily.com

UK INTERNATIONAL JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2016

Receiving standing ovations and strong reviews following its premiere in Cannes this year, One Week and a Day is on its way to becoming one of Israel’s biggest films of 2016. First-time director Asaph Polonsky tackles heavyweight issues of the heart in a quirky, humorous way. It’s the day after the shiva for their only son, and Eyal and Vicky are not quite sure how to go back to their daily lives. While Vicky insists on keeping to her routine, Eyal is intent on finding the remainder of their son’s medical cannabis at the hospice and getting high with his neighbour’s grown up son. Irreverent yet sensitive, Polonsky’s debut proves there are no rules when dealing with loss.

Established ten years ago, Combatants for Peace is a group of Israelis and Palestinians who have come together to fight for peace and co-existence in a non-violent way. Disturbing the Peace follows the stories of this remarkable organisation and some of its members, who, prior to their joining CFP, had wholly identified with their leaders’ call for armed fight as IDF soldiers or would-be suicide bombers. While portraying a sad picture of an ongoing and bitter conflict, both the film and the organisation it celebrates prove there is another, hopeful, way.

Itay Tiran delivers yet another strong performance, and Haifa’s hillside and port views lend themselves to the protagonists’ quest to move upward or, alternatively, sail away from the city, and their lives.

Louis-Ferdinand Céline, one of France’s greatest writers of the 20 th century, was both celebrated for his literary innovations and reviled for his virulent antisemitism and collaboration with the Nazi regime. This fascinating film focuses on the writer’s meeting with one of his admirers, American Jewish scholar Milton Hindus, while the former is living in forced exile in Denmark. It doesn’t take long for Céline’s admirer to start questioning whether it is actually possible to separate the man and his values from his art. An engaging and insightful film about morals, art and identity in post-war Europe.

This film, the first German cinematic adaptation of Anne Frank’s diary, offers a powerful recreation of the story of the Jewish teenager who documented the trials and tribulations of growing up while hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam. It portrays Anne as the rounded, complex and flawed human being she was, capturing her hopes and frustrations, the special bond she had with her father, Otto, and sister, Margot, and her eagerness to explore her burgeoning sexuality. Emotive as ever, the Anne Frank story receives the cinematic treatment it deserves.

Brunhilde Pomsel joined the Nazi party in 1942 not out of strong conviction but because it allowed her to take a lucrative job as the secretary of Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi minister for propaganda. She was hardly an antisemite but merely an ordinary citizen with little interest in politics. Now 105, Pomsel gives a mesmerising account of the war years. Though she denies any wrongdoing, she has been wrestling with a persistent sense of guilt ever since the war ended. A remarkably powerful documentary that explores both the near inevitable state of becoming silent accomplices that so many Germans found themselves in during the war, and the inner workings of the Nazi propaganda machine.

Beitar Yerushalyim is Israel’s most high profile and controversial football team, traditionally supported by a fiercely loyal fanbase of Jews originating from Arab countries. For years the team languished at the bottom of the league until Russian oligarch, Arcadi Gaydamak, bought the club and invested $100 million. However the signing of two Muslim players from Chechnya tests the power and loyalties of the fans and their beloved team to its limits, releasing a disturbing and violent strain of xenophobia and racism that threatens to tear them apart. A fascinating and uncomfortable insight into the connections between football, politics and money.
