Despite being a shorter-than-normal edition, there is still a lot going in the world of Scout Network, writes Emma Saunders
You can read all the section supplements, and the main magazine, online at www.scouts.org.uk/magazine
Check out the booklet of activity ideas to support Our Sporting Adventure, a UK-wide competition designed to get you inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic values. It runs from January to September 2012, so there is plenty of time for everyone to get involved. Even if you don’t want to compete, you may find some fun and exciting programme ideas that you would like to try out with other Networks in your area.
Stick your oar in Along with that resource we also have some questions to ask, with suggested methods of how you might ask them. Why are you a member of Scout Network? What do you enjoy? What do we need to improve to grow the section? Most importantly, what’s the unique selling point of Network? I can’t wait to see what sort of feedback you give us.
Happy birthday to us
GET THE CANDLES OUT Don’t forget 2012 is the tenth birthday of the Explorer and Network sections. We’ll be introducing a commemorative badge and holding events at our national centres. Turn to page 6 for more information.

Network members enjoy Bear Island escapade It was a weekend they’ll never forget for eight members of Scout Networks who got to take part in the Chief Scout’s Survival Camp on a wet and windy August weekend. Picked because of their success in gaining the Queen’s Scout Award, the lucky few descended on Bear’s castaway home in Wales, where they were treated to cliff-face abseiling, climbing and a masterclass in rabbit-skinning from Bear’s fellow survival expert, Woody. Becky Alexander from Essex gained a lot from the experience. ‘It was great to learn first-hand from survival experts like Bear and Woody. We got a sample of true Welsh weather, wet and windy, but it didn’t stop our fun.’ George, 19, from Oxfordshire said ‘It was a great weekend. I wish we could go back next year!’ Early on the Sunday morning, the Chief Scout led all the Queen’s Scouts to the shore for a bracing dip in the sea. ‘He said it was warm’ said Wrexham member Suzie Gregory, ‘…but he lied!’

Challenge yourself
ly Even our very own Emma Saunders recent ran a 10k for Scouting, so you can too!
If you’re yet to don the lycra and get active for Scouting, perhaps now is the time to say ‘enough is enough’ and sign up for a challenge event. Not only will you raise money for The Scout Association, allowing more young people to have the adventures you enjoyed, but you’ll be getting fit and meeting new people. There are loads of events you can sign up for, from the Steeplechase in Norfolk to the Santa Dash 5k in Liverpool. Go to www.scouts.org. uk/challengeevents to pick yours.

T
he summer has drawn to a close and the sun has set on the 22nd World Scout Jamboree. However, a new international opportunity awaits in the form of Roverway 2012. We are looking for Network age participants and IST members to join the UK Contingent.
What is Roverway? Roverway is a joint Scout and Guide event for participants aged 16 to 22 and IST (International Service Team) members aged 22+ organised by the Scouts and Guides of Finland. The nine-day event takes place from 20-28 July 2012 and includes two main parts; paths and camp. There are over 50 paths to choose from which will see participants exploring the stunning Finnish landscape, taking part in exciting activities, experiencing different cultures and meeting Scouts and Guides from around the world. It will be a truly memorable adventure. The remainder of Roverway will be held at Evo Campsite, where the IST will have built the infrastructure and be ready to lead a number of challenging activities including tree-top cafes, kayaking, survival nights and much more.
‘I visited Finland for the Heads of Contingent meeting earlier this year,’ says UK Scout Contingent Leader Richard Taylor. ‘The campsite is truly stunning, set between freshwater lakes and tall pine forests. It’s the perfect setting for a real Finnish camping experience. The paths look amazing and will give participants real adventures. It’s shaping up to be the best Roverway yet.’
About the UK Contingent If you attend Roverway 2012 you will become part of the UK Contingent. The cost of the event will cover all aspects of the experience including a number of briefing weekends, UK Contingent-branded kit, a pre-Roverway event and optional post-Roverway bolt-ons (so you can extend your trip further). There will be two travel options to choose from so you can tailor the trip to your needs and budget. Click on Registration opens on 1 October 2011. Visit www.scouts.org.uk/roverway for more information about Roverway, registration and event fees. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.

Ten and counting
2012 marks ten years of the Explorer Scout and Scout Network sections, and there are several ways to get involved
T
o celebrate a decade of the two newest sections, a special badge is being produced. We want you to have a say in the final design, which will be available to stitch onto your uniform in December. Go online to www.scouts.org.uk/network10 where you can see the designs and vote for your favourite.
Celebrate good times We’d also like to hear what you’re cooking up to celebrate this momentous milestone for Network. Are
you supersizing an event, launching a challenge or going somewhere new? The next issue of Network will be a special birthday edition, so if you’re planning something of note, let us know right now so we can share details with other Networks. Similarly, if you have special memories of the first ten years that would make a good story, tell us about them.
