This is the first time we have attempted a project of this kind since the launch of this programme and we are grateful to anyone who is able to help. Please use the four-page pull-outs to perform the activities, record the results and send it back to us. The results of this will take some time to collate and will be published next year.

News and updates The golden girl A Birmingham Sea Scout has made history by becoming the first girl in the history of her Scout Troop to achieve the Chief Scout’s Gold Award. The feats of 12-year-old Jennifer are even more impressive as she has dyslexia and dyspraxia. ‘To me, winning this award is no big deal and I don`t know what the fuss is about because I

was just having fun with my friends,’ said the heroic achiever. Jennifer received her award alongside other recipients from the All Saints Sea Scouts Group; Oliver, Rohan, Tom and William. Do you have a Scout in your Troop who has achieved something special? If so, we’d like to hear all about it and see the pictures at scouting.magazine@ scouts.org.uk

Spreading the fire safety message Since its launch in 2004, more than 84,000 Scouts have been awarded the Fire Safety Activity Badge sponsored by Chubb

A

s part of its badge sponsorship, Chubb offers live fire demonstrations across the UK. This gives Scouts the opportunity to use fire extinguishers and fire blankets on a live fire in a controlled environment and spread the important message of fire safety. Earlier this year, Shoreham Fire & Rescue Service and Chubb played host to over 60 Scouts completing their Fire Safety Activity Badge. Meanwhile, over 80 Scouts participated in a live fire demonstration from Chubb Fire Training Officer Andy Hicks at Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Station in order to complete their Fire Safety badge. The final live demonstration day is due to be held in Leeds on 27 October. For further details visit www.chubb.co.uk and go to the News & Resources page.

Competition

win!

The annual fire safety competition is inviting Scouts to produce a Home Escape plan poster that details the priority actions in the event of a fire. A Home Escape plan is a vital part of every household’s fire safety. Both the Fire Service and Chubb recommend that all homes have two exit routes as part of their Home Escape plan. This competition reinforces that crucial safety message. For further details, visit www.chubb.co.uk and go to the News & Resources page.

Make sense of money

The Scout Association and NatWest have launched a brand new series of activity packs to teach Scouts all about money management

F

ive different activity packs have been produced for Scouts, with detailed accompanying resources for leaders. Each pack covers a specific area of looking after money and is full of exciting ideas to help your Scouts learn about managing their own finances both now and in the future. There are also lots of Scoutingspecific activities to give young people a taste of what it’s like to organise a camp, run a fundraising campaign or be a treasurer.

6

THE PACKS ARE: • • • • •

Money and your life Staying on budget Bringing the fun into fundraising Running your own event Running your own business

Fun and finance As well as teaching your Scouts important life skills, some of the things you’ll cover in the packs can also count towards badges and challenges. Some of the fun activities can be done in your meeting place, while others will give you the opportunity to get out and about. In addition to the activity packs, NatWest has also produced various online tools to help Scouts and leaders alike with their finances, including a budgeting tool that you could use for planning camps and events. Visit www.scouts.org.uk/natwest to download your pack today.
