Our history is filled with firsts William Benjamin Munson, the University of Kentucky’s first graduate in 1869, studied engineering and became a prosperous entrepreneur who eventually owned 10 million acres of Texas land.
We Want You Here
Margaret Ingels earned a mechanical engineering degree in 1916, becoming the first woman to receive an engineering degree from the UK College of Engineering. When she later received a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, she made history as the first woman in the United States to earn a graduate degree in engineering. The first African-American student to receive an undergraduate degree at UK was Holloway Fields Jr., who graduated with an electrical engineering degree in 1951. Mr. Fields enjoyed a long, productive career with General Electric and was inducted into the college’s Hall of Distinction in 1998. Thousands of students have become the first college graduates in their families and used their engineering degrees to launch lucrative and enjoyable careers that permanently changed their futures. First-Year Engineering Program
First-Year Engineering classes give you a chance to try out different kinds of engineering. In the first class, you get introduced to all the majors. You get to test the waters of each engineering discipline before you invest a lot of time in classes geared toward your particular major. In the second semester, you get a design project where you’re given a problem and over the course of the semester you work with a team to design a product that will solve the problem. Here at UK, we have a fantastic Career Development Team. They do a lot of work and set up opportunities for engineering students to get positions that we want. I have really benefited from the fall and spring career fairs. When employers come, they’re actually looking for students for internships and jobs, and they really want you to apply. Students can talk to top employers and get interviews the next day. I even attended a career fair during my freshman year. I passed out approximately 50 resumes and got called back for two interviews. Eventually, I obtained a summer internship with Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati.

You can pick the classes that tailor to your interests. And you can get six of your 18 hours by doing research, which is what I did. I joined biomedical engineering professor David Puleo’s biomaterials lab, and it was a great fit. I was the only undergraduate working in it, which was great because I got to be mentored by postdoctoral students and graduate students. SCHOLARSHIPS
An engineering education at UK is very affordable when compared with other universities. The College of Engineering awards merit scholarships based on high school grade point average and ACT or SAT scores. There are also financial need scholarships that consider GPA and standardized test scores but also writing ability and overall leadership potential. Here are some of the scholarships available to students.
LESTER SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Named after the longest-tenured dean in the College of Engineering’s history, the Lester Scholars receive up to $12,000 for four years of college. Incoming freshmen who apply to the College of Engineering by December 1 and who meet certain criteria will automatically be offered an engineering scholarship as a Lester Scholar.
DEAN’S SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS
The College of Engineering awards scholarships to incoming engineering students transferring from another college, community college or university. Scholarships are available for students entering UK during both the fall and the spring semesters.

As I was exploring different career paths I could take with my materials engineering major, I realized biomaterials was an up-and-coming field, so I thought by having a biomedical engineering minor I could create a unique profile for myself. Because biomedical engineering is so broad, almost any engineering discipline works with biomedical engineering.
UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY SCHOLARSHIPS
While the college offers need-based and merit-based scholarships, students should not overlook potential scholarships from UK’s Office of Academic Scholarships. For competitive academic scholarship consideration, students must complete that section of the undergraduate admission application by December 1. Early application is strongly encouraged. FINANCIAL NEED-BASED AWARDS
In addition to aid awarded from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the college also awards scholarships based on financial need. Each year we recognize students who without the help of college scholarships would not be able to attend UK. Typically, these renewable awards range between $3,000 and $12,000 per year and are available for eight semesters. To apply, students must fill out a separate financial need-based scholarship application from the College of Engineering.
