UKYA CITY TAKEOVER: NOTTINGHAM 2019
WWW.UKYOUNGARTISTS.CO.UK
Welcome to our fifth major survey show of works created by young artists across all art forms. UKYA City Takeover gives visitors the chance to attend over 100 free exhibitions, performances, workshops and talks; many of which are family friendly. This is a unique opportunity to tour the city, discovering and learning about contemporary arts culture today. We have put together a programme which we hope will both inspire and generate conversation. We have introduced a new strand of work, Connecting the Community so more young people in the city can participate; a new Fringe event to show the wealth of talent in our regional universities; and presentations from UKYA alumni artists who since working with us have gone on to great acclaim. UKYA City Takeover: Nottingham 2019 offers cross disciplinary artists an opportunity to explore answers to questions in a collaborative and connected ecology over the course of a week. We seek to experiment with the city’s cultural and social landmarks as arenas for progressive conversation and new shared creative thinking between artists. This event will build on Nottingham’s growing identity as a destination for contemporary dialogue and ambition, alongside extending a hand to ongoing partnerships and new ways of working together as artists, organisations and as people. The economy, identity, place and the obliqueness of things that we encounter whether political, social, artistic, run

through the City Takeover; showing the expansive yet combined intelligence of a generation of artists seeking to respond, react and re-imagine the future. This high quality flagship biennial; although nomadic, influences and insights change, growth of community and peer engagement, and most of all progresses the career and social connectivity of the artists involved. It also marks some milestones for UK Young Artists: it’s our tenth birthday, and first biennial as a member of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio, and we have invited friends and partners from across the world to celebrate with us. Offering new connections for young artists internationally is so important both to the career of a young creative but also to the society we now find ourselves in. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the UKYA Board of Trustees, and our terrific team Laura Evans; Jade Foster; Vikki Jones; Nick Lawford; Justin Turford; Tristan Hessing; Ella Gondzic; Aja Ireland; Garth Gratrix; Sarah Ragsdale and Steve Houghton of Redbrick Communications. Special thanks to Federica Candelaresi, Marco Alfieri and Stefania Inverso from BJCEM, and our partners Seojung Arts Centre and Yiyuan Tang for all the hard work and dedication. Thank you to our selectors, sponsors and supporters, particularly our headline sponsor It’s In Nottingham; to our partner universities, Arts Council England as well as all our Nottingham venues, partners and friends who have helped us so much to achieve this ambitious project.

DIRECTOR’S WELCOME It’s really exciting to hear that UKYA’s City Takeover: Nottingham 2019 is going to showcase an extraordinary array of contemporary work from more than 250 artists from 25 countries, right here in Nottingham. Investing in opportunities for young people to see, participate and enjoy contemporary work from their peers nationally and internationally is a key part of what the Arts Council does to nurture the next generation of creative talent, and I can’t wait to see the whole city – from theatres and galleries, to shops, businesses and cafes – really come alive with music, performance, digital arts, literature and more next February. Peter Knott, AREA DIRECTOR FOR ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND
As a founding partner and the current host of UK Young Artists, we’re thrilled that Nottingham is to experience this celebration of exceptional artistic talent. NTU is passionate about widening access to cultural education and we know that this event will inspire young people across the city and beyond. We’re proud that so many of our students and alumni will be showcasing their work as part of this event, which is a wonderful addition to Nottingham’s rich calendar of events. NOTTINGHAM IS A BEAUTIFUL CITY, filled with history
and charm. It’s famously the home of Robin Hood, and was the centre of the world’s lace industry during the British Empire. Nottingham is currently the second youngest city in the UK, with more under 30s than any other except Manchester. This ensures that Nottingham is a vibrant place for the arts to thrive. Nottingham is also a UNESCO City of Literature and has been named as England’s Official Home of Sport. Our remarkable underground caves are the largest network of man-made caves in Britain and date as far back as medieval times. That’s not to say we don’t have some grand things on top of these caves too, Nottingham Castle (which is currently closed for a major re-development) is a landmark building and there are many fine examples of the work of architect Watson Fothergill to enjoy across the city as well as newer examples notably Nottingham Contemporary which was designed by Caruso St John Architects. Nottingham has a rich cultural heritage and a tradition of artist led projects including the influential Midland Group (1943 to 1987), which was committed to the presentation of ‘progressive and experimental visual arts in Nottingham’. The opening of Dance4’s International Centre for Choreography, and two public galleries, Nottingham Contemporary and New Art Exchange, has helped cement Nottingham as a centre for the contemporary arts. More recently The New Midland Group, comprised of three independent artist studios, Backlit, One Thoresby Street and Primary, have built on the legacy of the Midland Group, seeking to further develop the promotion of a unique visual arts infrastructure and developmental opportunities for artists in the city. New Midland Group Director, Matthew Chesney says, ‘New Midland Group celebrates self organised spaces within the city and encourages us to collaborate in support of the vibrant arts and culture provision we have here. It also allows us to work together through ambitious city wide partnerships such as hosting Bloomberg New Contemporaries and UKYA City Takeover to highlight the great spaces, artists, galleries and museums Nottingham has to offer.’

Djanogly Theatre, Nottingham Lakeside Arts The Art of Conflict follows a group of individuals who are the representation of mankind on Earth. Set in the gritty inner city of London, plagued by capitalism; materialistic greed; and technological advancements that separate us from reality and steal our independence. We follow these individuals as they navigate this harsh world that was designed to divide, as they search for the spark of love to end the conflict. What Is Written is a leading dance company, fusing contemporary, hip-hop and martial art styles. Producing an explosive mix of energetic, fast-paced choreography; lighting design; and original post-apocalyptic beats.
Spoken Movement’s Obibini is a hip-hop theatre show taking you on a journey of self-reflection. It’s a multi cross art platform, using dance vocabulary and rooted in hip-hop. The evening opens up on cultural hierarchy, challenging society’s perspectives and how this affects and shapes our culture today. In an immersive evening, the audience will experience a historical relapse and the emergence of worlds, where questions, domestic occurrences, humour and religions collide.

Some days the clocks begin to droop, or the windows disappear, or a room appears that she knows not to enter. Highly poetic but character driven, and drawing on physical theatre and performance poetry staging, the piece is a powerful exploration of the effects of agoraphobia and a woman who truly believes ‘her mother had made her up as a cautionary tale’. It’s a show about failure, messing things up and how it feels to be a 20-something artist with an increasingly intrusive and overbearing mental illness. It’s endearing, funny but never shy. Combining elements of stand-up comedy, live art and movement, this piece aims to celebrate the discussion of mental health in a light-hearted but touching manner. “You must reboot the system otherwise the new value will not be in force”. Hannah-Joy Spencer is a contemporary dance artist who specialises in dance theatre and multimedia work. In Reboot, she explores personal escapism through video games and comic conventions, as a means to ‘turn it off and turn it back on again’. A touching and funny autobiographical inquiry into whether escapism can unlock creativity and productivity.

A mix of comedy, spoken word and general frustration at the state of current affairs, it details one girl’s navigation through deciding which of her nationalities to keep, as she has recently turned 21 and is being forced to give up two of her three passports. Includes shorts from a UN sponsored documentary on migration and diasporan identity.
In a dark and uncertain environment We may think we know the right course of action to take But when circumstances are in constant flux Can we improvise and adapt? Do we change our position or stand our ground? Even stillness can be painful The consequences very real Five performers fight for territory in a space dominated by two suspended wooden beams. These are swung, manipulated, spun and dodged by the performers as they negotiate a series of movement and score based games, challenging to dominate or to support one another. MUS IC

UKYA CITY TAKEOVER: NOTTINGHAM 2019
A new global disorder has left many feeling numb and unsettled. In the aftermath of the American Presidential election, Brexit, the dissolution of Hong Kong’s Umbrella Revolution as well as an on-going world refugee crisis, dreams of progression seem less achievable than ever. Psychic Cards for Uncertain Terrain: Nottingham invites anxious viewers to have their futures read by a very specific deck of tarot cards. The deck is formed of instant photographs taken in 2018 around and within Nottingham featuring street life, private life, and the people who live here. Cards contain partial nudity.
Guests are invited to a guided walk through the garden where they will get to know the plants in a personal way. They will search the habitat of field grass, and hear stories about the diverse relationships between small and tall plants and remember to walk on the grass and watch your step.
Take Us as We Are is an autobiographical performance that explores Romany Gypsy heritage and culture. Unapologetic and interrogative, the work is embellished by truth and takes nomadic form as it forces the public eye to consider Liza’s presence/female Gypsy presence. A thought-provoking performance with themes of family, pride, innocence and identity.

LaPelle’s Factory – The Night Shift 10–10.30AM

A special performance from one of UKYA’s first alumni. A unique musical experience inspired by Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand featuring world-renowned concert pianist Nicholas McCarthy. Infamous pianist Paul Wittgenstein commissioned Ravel to write him a concerto after he lost his right arm during the First World War. The assassin that triggered that conflict, Gavrilo Princip, was kept in shackles in prison in Terezin, his withered arm tied up with piano wire, fading into the snow. Unravelling narratives surround this piece of music and together they weave a true story that spans 100 years. Michael Pinchbeck’s Concerto is a deconstructed, re-orchestrated exploration of the legacy of war and the healing power of music that marks the centenary of World War One. Musical manuscript will fall from the sky like snow on a battlefield. A conductor will become an assassin. An audience will become an orchestra. And a pianist will play.

Jade Foster, UKYA’s Emerging Producer in conversation about the City Takeover ‘Fringe’, New Collectives Jade, tell us a little about you and your practice: I graduated from the University of Derby, BA Fine Art in 2017. I am currently undergoing MFA Curating at Goldsmiths, University of London. I would describe myself as an Artist-Curator and my work currently investigates what that means and how this ties into my interests in artist-led initiatives. I am interested in

Both in my curatorial and artistic practices, a key interest is exploring the representations and symbolism of the black body within the public sphere. Through this practice I hope to create a dialogue around the visibility of Black women and non-binary artists in the UK. As an emerging producer, what drives your passion and what type of work are you particularly interested in? There’s still a lot more work to be done in regards to representation in the arts, especially in leadership and creative production. Our cultural leaders set the
Tell us a little about New Collectives: New Collectives has a core vision to support the new wave of artist-led initiatives, and is the first ever ‘Fringe’ event to run alongside UK Young Artists’ City Takeover. We have invited ‘collectives’ or groups of students from UKYA’s partner universities ( De Montfort, Lincoln and Nottingham Trent) to propose an innovative, bold and experimental project to be realised at the City Takeover. These projects might take the form of performances; exhibitions; zines; lectures; public interventions; or cross-art form happenings in the public sphere – the criteria is pretty much non-existent! Michael Forbes, Chair of Trustees at Primary, and myself, will support the chosen collectives to realise their projects. At the end of the process, the New Collectives will reflect in conversation with The White Pube – “the world’s freshest, funniest art critics’’ (DAZED). Why do you think this type of work is important? The art school or university is traditionally a place where people with similar creative,
Connecting the Community Connecting the Community is a new initiative which forms a key part of the City Takeover. These projects will see students from Nottingham Academy develop a new Hip-Hopera with the Community Recording Studio and the Renewal Trust, and members of the Nottingham Refugee Forum’s youth group create an exhibition with Backlit Gallery. The commissions will also encourage young people referred through the Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service to explore creative expression with City Arts, and pupils from Basford schools to develop new arts skills with Nonsuch Theatre. By collaborating with cultural organisations across Nottingham UKYA hopes to see participants working with inspiring young artists from across the UK to create new and exciting work and to creatively respond to their city and their place in it. The idea behind New Collectives uses this history as a basis, and aims to harness the collective power of creatives and importantly encourage and support different approaches to collaborative working. What do you hope to achieve through New Collectives, for yourself as a producer? I think it will be a success if we create a foundation for something to grow – co-produced with the groups. I’d like to see a collaboration across the cities, and creatives going off to carry on their collectives after graduating – adding to their city’s creative ecology. New Collectives should be a platform to support the creative development and personal growth of students. Global Connections We are a national organisation and we want to bring great art to the region and celebrate the diverse heart of England. One of the many ways in which we do this is by providing young artists with international opportunities both physically and digitally, which are so important both to the career of a young creative but also to the society we now find ourselves in. UKYA City Takeover: Nottingham 2019, our most ambitious project to date, takes place on the eve of the UK leaving the European Union. It presents a powerful survey show by a generation of politically and socially engaged artists, from over 25 countries across Europe and the world. UKYA strives to bring the world in closer for artists; promoting artistic mobility, and
the sharing of knowledge. With thanks to our partners BJCEM (Biennale of Young Artists of Europe and the Mediterranean), Seojung Arts Centre, YYT (Yiyuan Tang) and Platform Nord with whom we will continue to grow and offer platforms for international collaboration, co-commissioning and exchanges that stimulate learning and innovation. UKYA is partner of Eurodesk UK, which provides an information and support service to help young people and youth organisations find out about opportunities in Europe, including the Erasmus+ scheme. Look out for UKYA’s pop-up Eurodesk info points across the City Takeover if you’d like to find out more.

UKYA is working with a wide range of spaces to deliver the City Takeover, and as some of these spaces are old structures or period buildings, access may be challenging for those with reduced mobility. Some of the events in the City Takeover feature BSL interpretation, and UKYA is working with volunteers to offer translation for visitors to some talks and performances. If you would like any more information on venue accessibility or interpretation, please get in touch with us using the information below.
