Boost your language skills I came to Manchester from China early so I could take a 10 week Pre-sessional English Language course. Before starting I was really nervous about my poor English, but, when I finished, I realised that the most important thing is practice.
We’ve learned a lot about the principles which can be used in academic writing – how to use references, avoid informal language and build the whole structure of an essay. I’ve treated it like a ‘warm-up’ – it’s helped me to get used to a new life in a strange country. I’ve also made lots of friends from different countries, such as Brazil and Iraq. Our tutor also introduced us to the learning facilities at the University, such as the Main Library and the Albert Gilbert Learning Commons. Taking a Pre-sessional course will be a really unforgettable time in your life. Just go for it – you’ll improve your English skills before your main course begins. It’s really useful and well worth the time. Yichen Wang Pre-sessional Course, 2016
