The High School Youth Researcher Summer program (HYRS)

CAREER EXPERIENCE
Early Start Experience (ESE)
Take a liberal education course for full credit before the start of the Fall 2023 term! Liberal education teaches you how to think critically and become a global citizen.
The Early Start Experience (ESE) promotes success and eases the transition from high school to university while giving you credit for your degree. Get to know the Lethbridge campus, meet fellow students and your professors, and learn about the resources we offer. The ESE is open to ULethbridge students in all bachelor’s degree programs. Students who live off-campus can still take part.
Don’t take our word for it, hear what ESE students had to say about their experience!
Note: This video was created during the pandemic, but ESE will be offered in-person in Fall 2023.
If you apply to any of our living and learning communities by the deadline, and pay your deposits, you are guaranteed a bed in residence!
CAREER EXPERIENCE
What do employers want?
According to Forbes, employers want “human skills” and look for people who:
• Learn on the job • Know how to learn, often under pressure • Investigate, question assumptions, collect evidence • Make informed and reasoned decisions
• Communicate effectively • Take action
CAREER EXPERIENCE
What employers want is also what our society needs: thoughtful, creative thinkers and problem solvers with skills to tackle complex issues, predict the consequences of their decisions and act in the public good.
At ULethbridge, you will learn to think critically and creatively, develop new skills quickly and become resourceful and resilient. You’ll learn to communicate clearly, work collaboratively, solve complex problems and contribute to your community as a global citizen and leader.
Learning transferable, critical-thinking skills will help you adapt to careers of the future — whatever they may be.
How did the liberal education you received at ULethbridge prepare you for your career?
“Liberal education encouraged me to take courses that I likely would have otherwise overlooked. One course, Exploring Creativity, forced me to move outside of my comfort zone to focus on my own creativity and imagination. I walked away with a new sense of confidence and understanding of myself. Now in my career, being able to draw on areas outside my field has help me so much; for example, when writing educational materials and patient communication, engaging in the artistic side of hands-on dentistry or creating lectures for dentistry students. Liberal education has had a huge impact on my education and career as well as in my personal life.”
Dr. Fern Leavens (BSc ’13)
ULethbridge 2021 Young Alumna of the Year
“During my time at ULethbridge, I developed a lot of base skills in many different areas. It’s really helped me be versatile. For my business, I do all my own product photography, social media, website design and marketing. After going through the new media program, it’s been so beneficial for me to start my own brand, because I haven’t had to reach out to any other experts or professionals. It’s made it very accessible to start a business.”
