In between spaces National Institute of Design, Bhopal Semester 10 I UG thesis I 2018
A reminder: what is NID The National Institute of Design(NID) is internationally acclaimed as one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design education and research. NID today is premier design hotspot of the country providing research service and training in industrial design and visual communication. Why NID, bhopal NID provides students design knowledge, experience and information on products, systems, materials, design and production processes related to traditional as well as modern technologies. There is a great shortage in design education in india as there is only 4 NIDs currently of which only 3 has its own building. Only a limited number of students gets enrolled in NID for undergraduate course annually. The construction of new Institutions will reduce the shortage significantly.“Make in India - The initiative taken by government of india gives a great boost for indian industries there by increasing the demand for better designs.

The north portion of the site, facing the low lying agricultural fields and hills is zoned for Residential area. For better access and engagement the Administration and the Academic zone is placed in south end of the site. A green buffer is provided in between the Residential area and main active part of the campus. Two different axis is made along the contour which form the basis of zoning for academic and administration spaces. These axis act as a main pathway connecting all the spaces. Main pedestrian access act as an deisgn corridor, creating facades to showcases works of students. Central plaza as focus of the campus in form and function wise. 8

AD Portfolio 2019, Design thoughts Should be in Human scale. What is it? Human scale is the set of physical qualities, and quantities of information, characterizing the human body, its motor, sensory, or mental capabilities, and human social institutions. Sense in Freedom Freedom in spaces Freedom in Circulation Sense of Progression To Create a “Sense of Progression” through series of varying cross sections. The progression through spaces are carefully thought out as buildings are designed, which is created with both direct and subtle clues to evoke a wide range of feelings and emotions.
Everything in human scale
Perception field- 15o
Building avoids monumental or sculptural gestures instead creating a dialogue with site, with a series of paths and bridges and open spaces criss-crossing the site to provide rich networks of spaces
Single side section • provide in edges of the block. • get max light and ventilation. • less private, exposed
Section with over head plane • Define a volume. • Ventilation is ensured.
Section with over head volume, with pocket space and terrace. • privacy is achieved • Ventilation is restricted

Hope of Biennale to Kochi
Methodology The project was initiated with the imageability study of Fort Kochi and Mattacherry after which everyone came up with images of the study area as individually perceived. After a pilot survey and discussion with experts the study area was delineated. Four Groups were formed to systematically approach the study area with respect to History, Structure and morphology, Architectural characteristics and socio-physical infrastructure. The respective studies conducted helped us to arrive at the SWOT analysis addressing the factors that affect the precinct positively and negatively. All the information acquired was used for a brain storming session between students to devise guidelines, structure plans and design proposals which were merged into a single final structure plan. The project was conclude with 4 urban design interventions individual architecture designs and a scaled model of the precinct
Mapping out the different layers was the major part of the entire study which helped in bringing conclusions. These began with mapping out the evolution of Kochi to the existing building use, age and condition as well their roofing typologies. The enclosure studies along with the building heigh map helps in finding the texture of the place and the sense of enclosure and they relate to the activities.

Urban Design ,Ullas Karuvath Problems
Messy electric and telecommunication wires and hanging of flex boards and signage on them disrupt the view and take up space in the walkway.
Inefficient use of open spaces beside the road. This can be a space for parking for two wheelers.
Lack of information or signages for historic and community buildings.
Piling up of garbage in the demolished building’s site. Use of many coloured tarpaulin sheets in fruit market at the junction.
Flex boards covering the front facade of the buildings.
Entry to the exisitng traditional gujarati houses is dilapidated.
Uneven heights of footpath along the same sidestretch of road. Open drains, can be hazardous for pedestrians.
Lack of footpath- encroachment from papad makers. Small commercial buildings don’t have a veranda space.
Proposals
Opening up the buildings to the streets, with no name boards fixed in the ground. Only above 210cm
Promoting hand written sign boards clearing this area from the left over demolition waste and using that spaces for hawkers or food vendors, enhancing its character as a food street and hence night activity. providing parking
Story along streets- on footpath or roads
Making an accessible veranda space for whichever shops possible. plant trees inside adhering street wall such that it would shade the trees. Making continues even footpaths.
gateways for communities instead od information boards.
Dilapidated entrance compound wall and traditional entrance gateway can be reconstructed, or maintained.(special lighting features to enhance the night view o fthe street) Proposing a graffti wall- depecting the history of the gujarati settlement in mattancherry.

Urban Design,Ullas Karuvath Climate Analysis The sun angle here can be harsh, mostly from the southern side. Only in june we have sun coming from northern sidewhich can be controlled with appropriate shading devices The major wind is from northwest beach side. southeast wind at the night time.
Site analysis Vegetation Analysis The site is covered with more trees on the Southern side than the Northern side . Most of the tress are big ones which provide a character to the site
Pedastrian Path All the road has not well maintained pedestrian path. some where the closed drainage slab acts as pathway.
Transport Network The main access to the site is T M Muhammed Road With bus route that connect Fort Kochi and Ernakulam city. The surround roadd network are residencial lane and less active which is good to have for an housing project site.
Water Body / Canal The canal on the northern side of the site is stagnant and stinking, the canal was used as atransportation network years back. The present site was a pond which led a great role in purification of the drainage system of fort kochi. The govt aquired land turns to flat waste land of fort kochi. Redevelopment of this pond is the first step before building anything around. A clear water source is the main necessity here.
Building Use To the southern side of the site are residences. eastern side has residences that comes under slum relocation scheme that was done some years back. Fort kochi Government hospital is on the northernside.it is the only thing that is active for whole day ,residencial area is less active during night time but active during day time. Streets will be dead by night. 29

The Gurukul Experience Habitat Technology Group Internship works Semester 8 I Internship IJan- June 2017 Principal Architect Padmashree G Shankar
About Having an opportunity to work at Habitat while at the same time living in the establishment has been a fulfilling experience. This being a highly acclaimed green building has enriched my views and understanding of the architectural style of the building, the firm, the material use and the multifaceted qualities of mud, bamboo & other cost effective materials. The site visits to bamboo centre of habitat help to explore the wide variety of possibilities of bamboo construction.
“It’s important to construct building around nature and not on it” -Ar. G. Shankar
36
Internship at Habitat Technology Group ,Ullas Karuvath
Bamboo joinery techniques These are some sketches of bamboo joineries that I have learned and observed from bamboo centre HTG, during my training period. Making good and aesthetically pleasing bamboo joints is rather complicated because bamboo is hollow, tapered, has nodes at varying distances, and it is not perfectly circular. It is important to keep all these constraints in mind when designing a bamboo joint.

Woodpecker chair Furniture design ZonalNasa I Competition I 2014
Competition brief Since ancient times chair follows a definite role of structure and function ranging from palatial thrones to mediocre seats, all occupy a certain standard volume. Thus challenge arises to create a design wherein the chair occupies nil floor area thereby facilitating the needs of modern public
Concept The biological marvel portrayed by woodpecker bird species in clinging on to vertical tree trunks balancing their lopsided weight comfortably with extreme stability came as the solution which was inspired from the brainstorming. Space increasingly becoming a major constraint directed our output to rely on the second dimension,ie the wall plane to define chair effectively in various scenarios and various age group. The chair can be attached to plane surface using suction cups. Can use attachable hooks and clamp to mount to other places
The chair design is stackable to provide efficient mass transportation
The chair can be easily fold into onethird of it’s size

Infillcube is a 3dprinting start-up. They used to provide wide variety of 3d printing services and product development services. They also developed custom 3dprinters in their production unit. Design C300 is the finest version of the 3d printer they have launched. With its large build volume and all metal framed construction it is unique in its kind. C300 demands a rigid, bold and boxy design for its heavily packed specs under hood. The front profile is designed like an ‘X’- shaped frame projecting outwards. A chiselled slope is given on the front profile at 4 corners, to give a smooth look. Overall visual bulkiness is reduced by providing glossy, piano black finished acrylic panels. This increases the overall premium look of the printer.
