HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME Welcome to the Spring Edition of our sUCCess magazine – another jam-packed record of 12 weeks’ action at Ullswater Community College. At a recent visit to my dentist, the sUCCess magazine was the main topic of conversation and an Autumn Term edition, picked up from Booths, had certainly resulted in the same positive response I always feel when I get my first glimpse of the range and quality of the opportunities available to our pupils. It seems too that Ullswater’s reputation as a vibrant and exciting place is spreading not only to Penrith dentists but even further afield – we have record numbers joining Year 7 next year from outside the catchment area, many attracted by the opportunities available here. HARRY POTTER NIGHT 4
On Monday 2nd February, Muggles and wizards alike descended on UCC to celebrate International Harry Potter Book Night. Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 attended the event, playing quidditch, brewing potions, making wands and drinking butterbeer. Thank you to all students who attended for making it a truly magical event! Jodie Newsham

PHYSICS TRIP TO CERN LABORATORY AND THE HADRON COLLIDER The UCC physics department went on their first trip to the world famous science laboratory of CERN in February. Seventeen Sixth formers travelled by plane to Geneva, Switzerland, to see the Large Hadron Collider. The pupils were given a personal tour of the ground breaking research by scientists who work in CERN. Pupils learned about new research into the big bang and our universe. We were also able to visit local museums and experience the culture of Geneva. The students who went felt that “no other trip compares”, “this was really useful for my A-level physics” and “it was a fantastic experience that I would recommend to anyone” Rob Derbyshire

GCSE CATERING AFTERNOON TEA
Year 10 catering students brought a real ‘taste of success’ to UCC with their highly skilled and imaginative afternoon tea menus. All students chose individual dishes and revealed capabilities that astounded even themselves! Crisp, short-crust pastry was used to make mini quiches, choux pasty for éclairs and scones varied from traditional with clotted cream to smoked salmon with dill and cream cheese. Megan created individual chocolate box squares accompanied by delicate macaroons; Jake’s brandy snaps were hand-crafted to perfection and Georgia excelled in presentation, with her vintage china and dainty zingy orange and ginger possets set in miniature teacups. Ms Thompson & Mrs Rutherford represented UCC at a reception held by the Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan, at Lancaster House, London. UCC was selected to send representatives because of our “great improvements over the past few years, as reflected in the most recent Ofsted rating”. Around 100 guests heard Nicky Morgan speak & met representatives from the Department for Education.

With a wealth of film & TV credits between them, including the Harry Potter Pyjamas & Shanghai Knights, our guests were the perfect people to encourage our students hrough reading. Branch Out is our whole-school reading competition, now in its fifth year, tunity to try out new books & get rewarded for reviewing them with prizes such as a Kindle ets, kindly sponsored by the Penrith Alhambra. Gemma & Richard were visiting the Keswick g of their film Radiator, directed by Tom. The film was largely filmed in Cumbria. FARM
ANIMAL FARM This year’s Drama Department production of Animal Farm helped us close the year with the highs and lows of life on Manor Farm. A staggering undertaking, the show had not one but two casts and was completed in just nine weeks of rehearsals! The play was a real testament to the dedication and efforts of those involved, with almost all clocking up over 100 hours to help realise the dream. So many people deserve a specific mention – from those who dusted off their violin after years of hibernation to those who made it on stage in the face of raging illness. Without their efforts, and without the support of those who came to revel in the spectacle, Animal Farm would not have been possible. Matt Forrest

ONE NIGHT ONLY DANCE SHOW
16
On the 20th March students from all year groups took to the stage & performed at the 5th annual dance show extravaganza One Night Only. The show celebrated talent across the school, giving the audience a real variety of dance styles ranging from contemporary to ballet, street to lyrical & tap to jazz. All the students worked really hard & should be proud of what they have achieved. The evening, which sold-out all tickets, was fantastic & a true celebration of all the dance talent at UCC. JACK AND THE BEANSTALK
Thursday 29th January dawned cold with a little snow on the ground in Penrith but with a brooding sky, which by 10 a.m. started to produce significant snowfall. This was the opening night of the Annual College Pantomime – Jack and the Beanstalk of the cast had been unable to attend school and a decision had to be taken on whether to go ahead with the performa Luckily, by lunchtime most of the snow had cleared, the sun was shining and it was decided that show would go on. The th nights were fantastic performances full of humour, song and dance. The pupils’ hard work was well repaid when the Headte described it as a ‘triumph’, praising the talents of the cast and staff who had had him ‘enthralled from start to finish’.
As Mr Pattinson said, pantomimes are an institution at UCC and are eagerly looked forward to by a great many people – p and townsfolk alike. Well done to the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk, the next feature is Dick Whittington. Ian Tuer

OLIVER PRODUCTION
What a thoroughly enjoyable way to learn about Charles Dicken’s classic novel! The BTEC Performing Arts group, along with other dedicated drama students, took to the stage in a most entertaining and enchanting version of Oliver Twist. The invited audience were captivated by the students’ ability to produce a slick-paced, all-inspiring production. It was all bowing and ‘at’s off, ain’t that right Dodger. Helen Pickup

YEAR 10 & 11 HISTORY TRIP TO BERLIN
After a 2.45 a.m. start, a group of Year 10 and 11 students flew into Berlin in high spirits. We were all systems go from the first day, getting stuck straight into the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag Building and an exhibition. More poignant was our visit to the Holocaust Memorial and a concentration camp – a very moving experience. We also visited a section of the Berlin Wall, a nuclear bunker, Checkpoint Charlie and a variety of other exhibitions; on the last day a trip to Berlin Zoo was great fun. We ate curry wurst and pretzels, immersed ourselves in German pastries and negotiated the complex underground system without getting lost! Laura Allen

RED NOSE DAY The Year 10s had a real push to raise money for Comic Relief – selling red noses, bake sales, flump race eating, nail bar appointments, selling loom bands and sponsored swims to name a few. The final total raised will be around the £915.73 mark, which is a superb effort! I am extremely proud of my year group for their efforts – well done! Marcus Castle

RUGBY
As County Champions, the Year 9 rugby team was given the opportunity to take part in the North of England County Champions Rugby tournament, competing with the champions from Cheshire, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland and Yorkshire in a round-robin event. Unfortunately, UCC managed only one victory, although the commitment and determination demonstrated by every single player was outstanding. There were stand-out individual performances from Harry Hunter, Vincent Chan and Ronan Erasmus, all of whom made a significant impact on each game. Greg Key

On Saturday 7th February the Year 13 BTEC Dance group performed their site-specific piece Timelapse‌ A Step Into The Past. The group had been working on the project since September 2014, using the castle architecture & Lowther family history as inspiration. The performance was exceptional, with the mist around the castle making the piece very atmospheric. The many UCC staff, friends & family, as well as members of the Lowther family, thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Erin Dixon
