HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME A very warm welcome to the final sUCCess magazine of 2018 – and what a year it’s been! This issue reflects the amazing diversity of life at UCC and I am once again tremendously grateful for the work and commitment of all our students and staff over the past term. Our Year 7 students have made a fantastic start to their time at UCC and are already playing a full part in school life. They have joined students from other years in Prize Day performances, sporting events, trips and on the School Council. In October we enjoyed another highly successful Prize Day and are incredibly proud of all of our students. We are very grateful to our two special guests, proud of all the students who took part in the music, dance, gymnastic and drama performances, and of our many prize winners who made the day so special. The last few weeks have been incredibly busy at UCC. In addition to a visit by Ofsted, we have seen theatre trips, the regular prayer space event, our annual food bank collection and many, many sporting events, including success for our rugby, girls’ football, gymnastics, cross country and show jumping teams. Other events have seen our students take part in the Bake Off competition; a National Youth Jazz Orchestra workshop; an amazing science event organised by the Science Museum, London; a geography mapping project; and trips to London, the Theatre Royal Newcastle, the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester, and the Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, among many others. I hope and trust that all of you and your families enjoy a memorable and restful Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year. Mr Ellery, Headteacher

JENNI’S LONDON FINAL
Jenni has secured a place in the finals of the Teflon and Diamond Standard Awards’ ‘Keen Young Cooks’ competition at the Waitrose Cooking School. To qualify Jenni needed to adapt a well-known chef’s recipe, choosing to model her dish on the Hairy Bikers with her own twist of a special sauce and local produce. Let’s send all our best wishes to Jenni for the January final! From her delighted Food Teacher, Joy Albert

MEDIA AND ENGLISH TRIP
The English & Media Studies trip to London this year saw a wide range of activities: we caught two West-end shows (Don Quixote and Book of Mormon); visited Shakespeare’s Globe, the British Library, the Museum of Brands and finished with Xmas markets and shopping. Mr Shearer & Mrs Simkins would like to thank our fantastic students. Marc Shearer

It has been an absolute honour to work with Leanne and Jonny this year. As Head Girl and Boy they have truly represented every aspect of not just the sixth form but also our school and everything it stands for. I for one have learnt a great deal from them both and I know I speak for every student and all our staff in thanking, sincerely, Leanne and Johnny for all they have done for us these past two years. Year 7 Geography students will be involved in mapping UCC. Tim Viney from Atlantic Geomatics explained how he makes maps all over the world. We are using his map of UCC and completing it, by carrying out fieldwork in lessons and then adding our findings to Tim’s computerised map. We got to see the £10 000 surveying equipment but we didn’t use it! Beth Leathers
