Year 7 Summary of content: The exam will be one hour long. You should spend 35 minutes on section A and 25 minutes on section B AF1 – To understand, select and/or retrieve information, events or ideas from a piece of writing. AF2 – To deduce, infer or interpret information. AF5 – To explain and comment on the writer's use of language/choice of words or phrases. AF6 – To comment on the writer's viewpoint and the effect of the text on the reader. The writing task is a descriptive writing task. In the writing paper, you will be assessed on all the writing AFs. You will need to think carefully about what you are writing, and any particular advice your teacher has given you. AF1 - To write imaginative, interesting and thoughtful texts. AF2 - To produce texts which are appropriate to task, reader and purpose. AF3 - To organise and present whole texts effectively. AF4 - To construct paragraphs and cohesion within and between paragraphs. AF5 - To vary sentences for clarity, purpose and effect. AF6 - To write with technical accuracy of syntax and punctuation. AF7 - To select appropriate and effective vocabulary. AF8 - To use correct spelling. If you don’t understand any of the AFs, please make sure to ask your teacher for assistance. Suggestions of how to prepare: 1. Read extracts from modern drama, including plays and scripts. 2. Look up unfamiliar words to improve your vocabulary. 3. Practice writing short descriptive paragraphs and then draw what you’ve described to see if you have created a good picture. 5. Learn to spell correctly any frequently mis-spelt words. 6. In your revision, try using longer more complex words when writing to create a more sophisticated vocabulary. You can ask your teacher for an APP sheet which will tell you what you have to do to reach a certain level. Important information: The reading task will be based on reading a modern drama passage and answering questions that show you understand the meaning and the language used. The writing task will involve writing a short story.
