“Make your decisions very carefully. Don’t choose a subject just because you think you’re going to like it and don’t do something just because your friends say they loved it; you might not! Do your research and look into your options… where can your choices take you in the future? You’ll be told sixth form is a step up and that you’ll need to work harder but I didn’t realise quite how much of a step up it would be; I think a lot of people fall into that trap. You do have to appreciate that you’re going to go home and spend hours preparing for the next lesson. Teachers guide us and support us but don’t tell us how to do things in a prescriptive way. They’re helping us to develop skills we can use for the rest of our lives. Sixth form feels like home now and now I’m coming to the end of my courses I’m glad I made the right decisions.”

“I enjoy the sixth form a lot. Before I started I wasn’t sure about my subjects but the A-level lessons are so exciting and different that I’ve decided I want to study medicine at university. For part of my enrichment I worked in the Radiography Department at the Cumberland Infirmary and shadowed a variety of medical staff at Penrith Hospital, which was great; it helped me in my decision to go to university. The strong relationships you forge with your teacher’s help you mature and give you the confidence to work towards your full potential and to try new experiences.“

“Sixth form is helping me to realise my dreams – I’ve decided that I want to go to university and now I need to decide whether to study marine biology or sports physiology. I’m a competitive swimmer and the balance between studying and swimming was hard at first, but with the support of my sixth form tutors I organised my time so now I’ve got a routine that allows me to combine both – I can continue with my swimming training so that I can compete at a higher level and fit all my studying in too. Being in sixth form is like a small family – you help each other out and we’ve become very close. It’s much more than studying together. I would recommend doing as many activities as you can – there are lots on offer. Also try to do extra activities outside school; I remember selling daffodils to raise money for Marie Curie; I want to inspire people to take up charity work and help their local community.“

“For me I chose Sixth Form because I wanted to go to University, hopefully… I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do - I had an idea but I wasn’t set on it at all - so I thought Sixth Form would buy me some time. It’s really good because I think it opens doors, although it’s so much more than just learning subjects. I’m quite an independent student… I like how, if you are an independent person, and I tend to be, if I need help I can go and ask and I will get it, but if you don’t they don’t pester you or anything like that. It’s very much like you’re in control of what you’re doing. You have to find your own opportunities and take them otherwise I just think it’s a waste of time. Things like finding your own enrichment and using your study time really well. It’s just you. You can see yourself going further and further into courses which is really good.“

“Sixth form’s great. It’s teaching me a lot of the skills I need, showing me where I could go in the future and what I need to do to get there. There’s a lot more independence and responsibility in terms of working outside of lessons, background research and writing essays, but this is nothing to be especially worried about because you’ve got the guidance of your teachers – who tell you what you need to do and what you need to research. It might sound a lot but really, if you take your time with it and break it down, it’s not bad at all. Sixth form’s really good in social terms. Your class sizes are much smaller but the focus is wider, so the whole class is geared to helping each other and working together, especially in classes with group work.”

I am immensely proud of our Sixth Form provision, which opens the door to an exciting and successful future. Ours is an inclusive community that challenges students to be the best they can be. Our students are at the heart of everything we do, and our student-led approach makes for a bespoke Sixth Form both in terms of a wideranging curriculum and a diverse enrichment programme.
At UCC, you will experience a new and different relationship with your teachers; we recognise the maturity of our Sixth Form students and their ability to take on additional responsibility. I also believe that our core strength comes from the skilled, dedicated and supportive Sixth Form team who build strong relationships with students.
