Q5 Evaluation Mark Scheme

Q5. Evaluation Plan:

You don’t need to include all of these for every experiment, only write about what is relevant.

Annotate! Write on the method, results and conclusion to make a plan before you start answering Evaluate Independent variable

Dependent variable

Have they chosen an appropriate range? (Is there a pattern? If not the range might be wrong)

Will this DV test the hypothesis? (do the results answer the question?)

Have they chosen the right intervals? (can you accurately find the result? Would having more in between values help?) Have they chosen enough different categories? Will this IV test the hypothesis?

Are they measuring frequently enough? (can you see a clear pattern?) Are they using the right equipment to measure it? Are the units right? (pipette rather than measuring cylinder for volume, balance with the correct precision, number of decimal places?) Are they being precise?

Analyse and interpret Control variables

Conclusion

Equipment And method

Data analysis

Conclusion

Are they using the right equipment? Is it set up correctly? Check the diagram if there is one.

IMPORTANT

IMPORTANT

Is the table suitable? (IV and DV in the correct place, units correct, calculations correct)

Does the data support their conclusion?

Are there any anomalies?

E.g. Temperature Volume Mass Concentration Species Time Space

Is their method in a logical sequence?

If there are calculations have they been done correctly?

Is there enough data to make this conclusion?

Are they taking readings at the right time?

Have they included repeats (at least 2) and calculated a mean?

IMPORTANT Are they controlling everything they should be?

Are there any mistakes in their method? Have they missed any steps?

What pattern do the results show? Draw a sketch graph to help you see the pattern. Include evidence from the data

How could they improve their data to answer the conclusion? (More repeats? Different range? More readings?) Be concise (no waffle)

Q5. Evaluation mark scheme: Criteria Analyse and interpret

Evaluate

Conclusion

Level 1 (1-2 marks)

Level 2 (3-5 marks)

Level 3 (6-8 marks)

Adequate interpretation and analysis of the scientific information

Good analysis and interpretation of the scientific information

Comprehensive analysis and interpretation of all pieces of scientific information

Generic evaluative comments made with little linkage to supporting evidence/reference to context

Evaluative comments with supporting evidence/reference to context and a partially developed chain of reasoning

Evaluative comments supported by relevant reasoning and appropriate reference to context

A conclusion may be presented, but will lack focus and be superficial and underdeveloped

Conclusion will be mostly focused and developed and draw on some of the information presented before

Conclusion will be clear and concise and welldeveloped drawing upon the most relevant information presented before
