HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME Welcome to the Spring Edition of our sUCCess magazine. I thought it would be hard to match the last edition, which was packed with articles about a busy autumn term, but this edition is again full of reports of the wealth of tremendous opportunities at UCC. As we brush ourselves down after the unprecedented disruption wrought by the ‘Beast from the East’, if this last week is a brief snapshot of ‘life at UCC’ then I’m not at all surprised that the LRC team struggles to fit all of the articles and images into one edition. As an example, in just one week at UCC: Sixth Form and Year 11 students completed their final mock exams and started attending intervention and revision sessions, with a busy Easter revision school planned for the weeks ahead; the highly successful Branch Out programme has seen visits from Orlando Weeks and the Bookshop Band; sports teams have featured in many district and county finals, including the Year 9 and 11 County Rugby Finals at PRUFC, where both teams carried off silverware; dancers from Years 7 to 13 showed off their tremendous talents in our annual dance show; Year 9 Scientists visited Newcastle University; Year 10 artists visited the North Yorkshire Sculpture Park… and I could go on! At this time of year I have the great pleasure of visiting Year 5 students in neighbouring primary schools, where I talk about the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere at UCC, which provides so many opportunities to so many young people. I am sure that you will agree that this is not an overstatement when reading through this magazine. Mr Ellery

HARRY POTTER BOOK NIGHT 2018

Cumberland Hall recently played host to an enthusiastic group of budding magizoologists at our fourth annual Harry Potter Book Night. Students and teachers dressed up as basilisks, house elves and famous witches and wizards, and took part in a plethora of magical activities, from designing their own ‘fantastic beast’ to battling dangerous monsters to hunting for treasure with nifflers. The evening was rounded off by a Hogwarts-themed feast, including chocolate frogs, enchantingly good cakes and butterbeer. Karen Simkins

Twenty-one students from Lycée Saint-Sauveur in Redon, Brittany, arrived to a snowy Cumbria to be warmly welcomed by their host families on the third annual French exchange. In their week-long stay they spent time in lessons, experienced British family life, discovered the region and above all perfected their English! We go to France for the return trip just before the Easter break. We can’t wait! À bientôt! Chris Pattinson

As part of the Branch Out launch, and in conjunction with the Art Department, students from across the school participated in an interview and attended a workshop with Orlando Weeks. Orlando, formerly the lead singer of award-winning indie-rock band The Maccabees, has recently written and illustrated ‘The Gritterman’ for which he also wrote an album to accompany the book. Students were treated to a reading and insight into Week’s process and illustrating style, as well as receiving inspiration from a musician, illustrator and author. Thanks to Orlando! ROCKET CAR RACING The Race for the Line project, which is sponsored by the British armed forces and Microsoft, saw over 200 students in Year 7 design and make rocket cars as part of a national drive to promote careers in science and engineering. With the help of some visiting rocketeers, over 60 cars were raced at UCC and the top two teams will go onto the regional finals to compete against other schools in the area. Over 100,000 Year 7 students are competing nationally, with the finals being held in June 2018. Ben Harnett

STEPPING OUT DANCE SHOW

This year’s Dance spectacular “Stepping Out” was a celebration of student’s hard work. Students from Years 7-12 groups participated and everyone proved themselves to be a real credit to the school and to themselves. The show combined GCSE and BTEC assessment pieces as well as work which was created in both curricular and extracurricular time. The event was supported by a full house made up of staff, parents, carers, friends and extended family members of the performers. There were many so many compliments, but three words do sum it up succinctly, “a roaring success”. Erin Dixon

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, visited UCC to see the prayer space and to meet students and staff. After hosting a question-and-answer session with sixth form and Year 9 students, meeting the Student Council and looking in to some Year 7 RE lessons, the Archbishop was keen to visit the prayer space to see how it allows students of all religious faiths (and those with none) to explore themes about religion, life and death in a manner that might not normally be possible in a school context.
