HEADTEACHER ’ S WELCOME Welcome to our 2019 winter edition of sUCCess magazine. What a wonderful term it has been here at Ullswater, students and staff have been working hard since September, not only in the classrooms but everywhere. It is difficult to imagine how so much can be squeezed into such a short period of time! We have welcomed our largest ever group of Year 7s and they have made a fantastic start to their time in the school. We already have students who have achieved their gold merit awards and a number of the UCC pledges as well as immersing themselves fully into UCC life. Prize day was another incredible experience not only for those students receiving awards but for all of those involved on the day and I need to once more offer my thanks to Fiona Clayton and Kate Proctor (both ex-students) for adding even more to the event and inspiring our students. This has been a long term and an incredibly busy one – we’ve had charity events in the form of our shoe-box appeal, Children in Need, the Salvation Army food bank and Save the Children’s Christmas jumper day. We’ve had our ‘wear something green day’ to raise awareness of the climate crisis that has launched our ‘No Planet B’ initiative onto a national level. There have been trips and fixtures all over the county, country and internationally. We’ve had sporting success, national poetry day, competitions, clubs and many, many more... I hope you enjoy finding out more about recent events here at UCC and let me take this opportunity to wish every member of our community a very happy festive season. Mr Gilby

LOWTHER FRIGHT NIGHT

This year saw the school’s fifth return to the Haunted grounds of Lowther Castle to act as spooks and scarers for the annual Halloween event. This year involved a weekend of terror with a number of our students from Years 11-13 giving their all to terrify guests. Another successful year, with praise for our performers coming from all quarters. Matt Forrest

Nearly 2000 students, parents, sponsors and guests were present to see the awarding of prizes at our annual Prize Day. Our two special guests for the day were ex-students Fiona Clayton and Kate Proctor, Fiona treated us to a debut of her song ‘When the Night Starts to Leave’ and Kate took part in a lively Q&A session, on her time at UCC, and her current experiences working as a journalist for The Guardian. Encouraging students to pursue their goals and not to give up when things got tough. The inspirational theme continued with some truly outstanding performances of gymnastics, music, drama, dance and the UCC Street Band.

UNIVERSITY PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP Year 13 fine art students visited the University of Cumbria art department for a campus tour by Martin Fowler followed by a printmaking workshop. We were fortunate to use the university equipment, the experience was invaluable for many as a catalyst for their current project, but also to add a greater range of experimentation to their prep work.
