GCSE English Language and Literature Two separate courses, two separate grades


English Language Two exams • Paper 1: 1hr 45 mins (Creative) • Paper 2: 2hr 5 mins (Transactional) • Both assess Reading and Writing • Key skills are Analysis, Evaluation and Comparison • Writing requires both Creative writing and Transactional writing


English Literature Two exams • Paper 1: 1hr 45 mins • Paper 2: 2hr 15 mins Texts being studied: “Macbeth”, “A Christmas Carol”, Relationships’ poetry, and a modern text - either “An Inspector Calls”, “Blood Brothers”, “Journey’s End” or “Animal Farm”.


English Literature Paper 1 - “Macbeth” and modern text • “Macbeth” is split into two parts, a and b, and there is only one question. Students have an hour for this. • The modern text is one question from a choice of two and SPG is part of the assessment. Students have 45 minutes for this. Paper 2 - “A Christmas Carol” and poetry • “A Christmas Carol” follows the same format as “Macbeth”. • Poetry is split into two parts - the seen and the unseen. Students have 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete both questions. Both parts require students to compare two poems. There are no books allowed in the exams.


How to Help - Language Students should: • Complete all homework as thoroughly as possible • Use SAM Learning to develop their grammar and punctuation skills, as well as developing spelling skills • Use SAM Learning to develop their understanding of key language techniques • Practise close word and sentence level analysis of text • Practise evaluating texts of all kinds- reviews, recommendations, articles, etc • Practise comparing texts and learn the language of comparison • Experiment with their writing and practise using different styles and forms • Develop their vocabulary - read more challenging materials


How to Help - Literature Students should: •

Complete all homework and extend the amount they write

Re-read all the texts more than once

Learn the plot structure and key character quotations for all texts

Research the texts on the Internet - BBC Bitesize, Schmoop, Poetry Foundation, Ask Mr Brough, Sparknotes, York Notes, CPG books

Use the LRC, which has a number of new critical texts, mainly on Shakespeare

Visit the UCC website as there are a number of vlogs focusing on “Macbeth” and the poetry

Buy revision guides, which are available to buy from UCC, as are ‘Key Quotes’ postcards

GCSE Mathematics Foundation Tier: Grades 1 to 5 Higher Tier: Grades 4 to 9


GCSE Mathematics Three exams • Paper 1: 1hr 30 mins (Non-Calculator) • Paper 2: 1hr 30 mins (Calculator) • Paper 3: 1hr 30 mins (Calculator) 80 marks per paper, total of 240 marks. All 3 exams could test on any topic from the syllabus.


It’s not just calculations anymore….. Key assessment objectives are: • Use and apply standard techniques • Reason, interpret and communicate mathematically • Solve problems within mathematics and in other contexts


How to Help - Maths Students should: • Arrive at every lesson ready to learn • Have the required equipment every lesson • • • •

Complete all homework as thoroughly as possible, seeking help outside of lessons if required Use a ‘little and often’ approach to revising GCSE Maths Use their prompt booklet when revising and the Maths revision guide in your packs Use the topic list in your revision packs as a starting point….
