Analysis

To get a first impression of Rome and it´s relation to the Tiber, it was very important to analyse all the different layers of the city. First we started to analyse which way the Tiber runs through Italy and then we took a closer look to Rome. While the first step we could find out, that the Tiber changes his appearance in 3 main steps. First, at its spring, it starts as a very cold and clear mountain river (with the german waterquality of 1), then it runs through the valleys of the Apennines and

ends in Ostia at the Thyrrenian Sea. At its last stage, in Rome, the Tiber is nearly like a canal with its fixed riverbanks. And while passing Rome the waterquality is going down to 4! That shows us, that we really have to help the Tiber in Rome! Furthermore we compared other european cities to Rome and how the inhabitants are using there rivers. Then we zoomed into Rome and analysed different spaces along the Tiber, the different bridges in Rome and of course

the different users of the Tiber in the city centre. All in all these Analyzes showed us, that there are many unattractive places along the Tiber in Rome but we also could notice, that there are a lot of nice and calm places along the riverbanks. For example there are many green spaces, partially undiscovered, and of course also some really nice and architectonical spaces. For example the Ponte della Scienza in the south of Rome in the Ostiense district and the area around the Gasometro nearby.

FURNITURE & SIGNS

STEPS You´re biking along the Lungotevere, then you look right and notice that you´re riding next to the Tiber - so let´s go there! But how to pass all these steps down to the River while carrying your bike?! There are almost 60 steps to pass... And in times of rain it´s getting more dangerous and exhausting because of the slippery surface of the steps...

Along the entire length of the Tiber there is not really a nice and comfortable place to stay. There is a lot of destroyed furniture (e.g. benches and bins) and also places you can´t stay in case of the undergrowth. Of course there are many places you could use, but actually you can´t!

RUBBISH AND EVEN MORE RUBBISH

14

If you went down to the riverbanks of the Tiber (after passing all these steps!) and you think that relaxing starts right now, you will maybe be disappointed because of all these rubbish at some places. Should there be more bins or is it a deeper problem that must be solved?

VS.

THE “GREEN” & MODERN TIBER Certainly there are not only problematic places down the Tiber! On the other hand you can find a lot of green and idyllic and also well designed ones! If the luck is on your site, you can even see little roman Tiber-beavers!

Concept

O

31

Our main idea of the concept and the design of “Roma Tevere - new urban waterfronts” is supposed to bring the Romans back to their River - the Tiber. The concept includes the 48 hours Park, an public and partizipative action for the people living next to the areas of our final design. The two areas we have designed are located in the north and in the south of Rome. At these places, the riverbanks are getting bigger and the famous Muraglioni are ending right there. So why shouldn´t we use these places for our two flagship projects - “Parco Ponte

della Musica” and the “Flamingo Beach” in the south? What is a well designed open space without people using it? I might say, it´s nothing. That´s why it is really important to include the locals during and after the process of designing a new open space. But not only locals have to be involved, also local companies should. They can play a really big part in case of the financial factor - let´s involve local companies and ask them if they want to support you! At ‘Roma Tevere - new urban waterfronts’ all these aspects are playing a really important part

for the concept and the realization of the project! When everything went well we have to establish the new open space. If the participation from the 2nd phase was successfull, it maybe runs by itself, but to get sure that the continuous use is guaranteed we will start different events during the year, attracting new locals or even people from other roman districts. Examples for such events could be an italian streetfood market, classical and modern concerts, sports events or even streetart actions.

2ND PHASE - PARTICIPATION

3RD PHASE - ESTABLISHING

To activate the space it´s important to design something. But how should the design look like? It´s very important to think about the future users of the new area. Who are they? What are there wishes for there free spaces? Do they need something certain because it´s missing at there district? All these questions have to be asked and of course have to be answered! As a result of this we can design a great area with the people in mind! At this project it was very important to have kind of a low cost and therefore a down-to-earth design.

Design

45

The main idea of the design is, to keep the centre of these places free from any interventions. We want the crude and wild nature still to be there in the future. But we´ll make interventions on the frame around the centre of the areas! These interventions are fulfilling the wishes and the needs of the citizens from the neighbourhood. A new multifunctional sports area is located in the North of the Parco Ponte della Musica. This area should satisfy the modern claims of the citizens of a metropolis like Rome. The main claim was, to design an area that

can also be used from the schools of the neighborhood because many of them don´t even have an sports area on their schoolyards. If we go a bit more to the south we are entering the area of the climbing hall and the training centre. Here we designed a generous space for the people who want to go climbing or doing some rowing on the Tiber. The other flagship area we have designed, is located in the South of Rome, in the Ostiense District. This area is called the "Flamingo Beach". As the word implies, we have designed a beach here! At

these beach the citizens are having the possibility to relax next to the Tiber on their city-beach and also to do some activities like beachvolleyball. In the West of these are we have designed an urban community garden where you can go whenever you want to and getting a godfather for one of the raised beds right there. You can earn your own vegetables and enjoy them with the other mates from the garden! Or you can share the vegetables at the street food market in the south of this area!
