Welcome to a musical journey! It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this new Season of wonderful music. I invite you to come on a journey with me and the Ulster Orchestra, as we explore familiar favourites and venture towards new horizons. ‘Muchas Gracias’ for the warm reception you gave me in my first year as Chief Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra. It has been so great to meet many of you and hear the stories of your journeys with the Orchestra. I believe that we are all part of something very special here in Northern Ireland and I hope you will be able to join the Orchestra and me for as many great evenings (and lunchtimes!) as you are able. I will continue to explore my passion for the music of Tchaikovsky and Beethoven, and this season we will perform two concerts that are especially devoted to Beethoven’s ‘Seconds and Thirds’; his Second Piano Concerto and Second Symphony, as well as his Third Piano Concerto and his Third Symphony, the inimitable Eroica. We will conclude the Season with Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony, paired with Berlioz’s great and hallucinatory Symphonie fantastique. This is only a taste of the great music that you can expect in the Season ahead! Working with the audiences of tomorrow is close to my heart and so I am especially excited about some of the new learning and engagement initiatives that we will be launching for people of all ages and across all backgrounds this season.

Promenade into a brilliant new season with the Ulster Orchestra and Ravel’s colourful and spectacular orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition: ten varied musical paintings of – amongst other delights – witches, gnomes and chickens dancing in their shells and featuring, of course, the bombastic Great Gate of Kiev.

Chief Conductor Rafael Payare serves up a cordon bleu menu of fine French classics, celebrating the ‘King’ of instruments. Colm Carey, a soloist in demand around the world as much as in his role as Belfast City Organist, joins the Orchestra for this sparkling programme that reaches its climax in the glorious, spine-tingling final movement of Saint-Saëns’ mighty Organ Symphony – one of the world’s best-loved classics and a piece that simply has to be enjoyed – experienced – live!

Mendelssohn, during his short but intensely full 38 years, was an amazing conduit of Romantic energy. He so named his Italian Symphony as much for the happy, buoyant mood in which he composed the piece – a musical postcard from a traveller in the Mediterranean – as for the Italian dances that inspired it. Piazzolla’s lofty Aconcagua carries a similarly ‘sunny’ disposition and is full of the passion and flavour of the South American tango. PRECONCERT TALK

Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3 Tchaikovsky Symphony No.1 Winter Daydreams Rafael Payare Conductor Alexander Gavrylyuk Piano Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto is a favourite with audiences – and a sinew-stretching technical challenge that pushes any soloist to the limit. A block-busting epic of a concerto, it is grand, expansive in tone and style and full of all the melodic passion that we love from Rachmaninov. Since exploding onto the international stage a decade ago, pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk has been earning rave reviews for his interpretations of Rachmaninov’s concertos: ‘Technically, Alexander Gavrylyuk can do anything. In Rachmaninov’s Third... he showed how one note, warm and full, can float above the orchestra, in a state of natural free fall.’ (De Volkskrant, Netherlands) Tchaikovsky’s atmospheric First Symphony is full of the wistful melodies, rich orchestration, balletic rhythms and grand marches that make him one of the world’s most beloved composers. Rafael Payare Conductor Inon Barnatan Piano Beethoven’s revolutionary Third Symphony ushered in the new Romantic period of music, a time of heroes and heroines. Leonore Overture No.3 is his greatest overture, befitting of his daring, operatic heroine. And the ‘hero’ of Beethoven’s elegant Third Piano Concerto is sure to be the star Israeli pianist, Inon Barnatan, who made his debut with the Ulster Orchestra in 2015. ‘A true poet of the keyboard: refined, searching, unfailingly communicative… This is musicianship of the highest calibre.’ (Evening Standard) PRECONCERT TALK

LISTEN OUT FOR… BEETHOVEN’S EARLY SYMPHONIC REVOLUTIONS Symphony No.2

Each of Beethoven’s nine unique symphonies is a masterpiece in its own right and represents a fascinating stage in the unfolding history of not just the symphonic form but of music itself. In this sense, his Second Symphony (26 February 2016) forms a bridge between the old world of Haydn and his contemporaries and the new, revolutionary world that was just around the corner. To audiences of the time, even this ‘crossover’ symphony was startling and exciting and completely different from all that had gone before. On hearing it one person wrote: “It is a noteworthy, colossal work, of a depth, power, and artistic knowledge like very few. It has a level of difficulty, both from the point of view of the composer and… quite certainly unlike any symphony that has ever been made known. It demands to be played again and yet again… until the astonishing number of original and sometimes very strangely arranged ideas

becomes closely enough connected, rounded out, and emerges like a great unity, just as the composer had in mind.” But even these ‘original’ and ‘strangely arranged’ ideas were nothing compared to the musical revolution that was about to hit the world…

Symphony No.3 Eroica

Hyperbolically described today as ‘The Symphony that Changed the World’, Beethoven’s monumental Third Symphony, Eroica (4 March 2016) is one of the masterworks of classical music. Written in 1803 it was (at the time) the largest, most radical and most complex symphony ever written and one which grabbed classical listeners by their ears and dropped them slap bang into the new century! But of course to modern audiences it is simply a marvellous musical adventure and a favourite of many (including Beethoven himself).

How to follow that? After all this revolution, a maturing Beethoven entered what has been dubbed his ‘middle period’, where some of his most attractive works were composed – his Violin and Fourth Piano Concertos and... his Fourth Symphony (27 May 2016), which Schumann described as “a slender Grecian maiden between two Nordic giants [the 3rd and 5th Symphonies]”. Nevertheless, the lean, strong and lively Fourth Symphony is unmistakably Beethoven, always moving forwards, always evolving, always enjoyable. Join Rafael Payare and the Ulster Orchestra as they continue to explore Beethoven’s symphonies in Season 2015/16!

Enjoy a rare performance this evening by internationally acclaimed clarinettist and period instrument specialist Annelien van Wauwe on the basset clarinet, the instrument for which it was originally composed. The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams is another national favourite and his Fifth Symphony is widely regarded as one of his finest achievements.

Helping isolated elderly people in rural areas access live orchestral music October 2015 – May 2016 The Ulster Orchestra’s award-winning Move to the Music scheme is for people aged seventy and over who live alone in rural areas and may have trouble getting out and about. Move to the Music provides access to selected Season 2015/16 concerts, including bus transport (picked up from home), concert programmes and a hot drink. This service is provided for free, thanks to the generous support of JTI. Feedback from our current Move to the Music patrons is extremely positive – they enjoy seeing each other and making new friends at the orchestra concerts as well as appreciating the music; many cite the Move to the Music evenings as some of the only social events they are able to get out to. Playing a vital role in supporting the Orchestra The Ulster Orchestra’s vision is to make classical music accessible to everyone in Northern Ireland through live concerts, radio and television broadcasts, education and outreach work, and our highly acclaimed recordings. The Friends of the Ulster Orchestra play a vital role in making this work possible, providing ongoing support throughout each season through volunteering, advocacy and helping us to promote the orchestra. Patrons aged 60 and over are entitled to a concession discount of £2 off seats in Price Bands D, E and F. Please note that concession discounts are not available in conjunction with a Subscription discount. If you are of working age and in receipt of unemployment benefit you can purchase tickets to Season 2015/16 for £5*.
