Moving to a brand new city can be a daunting experience but hopefully after reading these tips you will feel a little more reassured and start getting excited about becoming a fresher in Leicester! You’re probably sat reading this and panicking about how you’re going to fit your entire life into a suitcase. Don’t panic! You probably won’t need everything you think you do and if you accidentally forget something, Leicester has everything you could ever want from huge supermarkets to Highcross, a brand new shopping centre in the heart of the city. Using this as a guide rather than a prescriptive list, here’s a brief rundown of things we suggest you bring:
Clothes Bring daytime and evening clothes, socks, underwear, a towel and bedding. Any fancy dress items you may own will be handy, as you will inevitably end up with a huge collection by the end of the year anyway.
Your I.D. You don’t want to be left outside the club just because you forgot it!
Mobile phone To keep in contact with friends and family back home as well as all your new friends you’ll meet in the coming weeks.
Tea & biscuits Making a cuppa is a great icebreaker to get to know your new flatmates.
A door wedge Keep your door open. That way, you can meet anyone that walks past your door and it’s a great way of being sociable.
Toiletries Toothpaste and toothbrush would be a good start, as well as things to keep you smelling good!
Home comforts such as photos, pillows and things that remind you of home.
Cash for Freshers Fair to sign up for societies and pay for cards and passes etc - the cash machine queues can get quite long.
medical things such as
paracetamol, plasters and tissues. You never know when you may need them!

Safety First It’s exciting being at University and we don’t want anything to get in the way of your exceptional experience. So, here’s some great tips for staying safe at Uni. Lock your door and shut the window- even if it’s just to go for a shower. Home Office statistics show that opportunist theft is on the rise. Don’t let anyone have the chance to nick your stuff! Similarly, don’t let anyone you don’t know into your flat unless you’ve checked their ID first. Sign up to the Freemen’s Common Health Centre, which is located just a few minutes away from campus. You’ll have the opportunity to sign up at halls and at Freshers Fair. Don’t walk home alone at night. Carry a personal safety alarm when it’s dark and make full use of the Safety Bus Service. Avoid poorly lit areas and always walk in a group.
make sure you know your limits. Plan your night in advance- make sure you know who is going with you and how you’re getting home. Eating isn’t cheating- make sure you eat something substantial before drinking vast amounts of alcohol. Never leave your drink unattended and drink water or soft drinks in between rounds. Have a few taxi numbers saved in your phonebook just in case. Be safe. Always wear a condom. Mark your valuable items with a UV pen in case. anything gets stolen.
Freshers week has the reputation of being one big party. If you do decide to drink alcohol,

email su-wiofficer@le.ac.uk twitter @suziburtenshaw facebook/suzi.burtenshaw Hello, so who are you and where are you from? I’m Suzi Burtenshaw from Brighton. What’s the best thing about being a student? The opportunities and the experiences you won’t ever get elsewhere, as well as the amazing people you meet! What do you miss most from home? Chips on the beach after a night out, my dogs, and a well-stocked fridge… Freshers’ is nearly upon us, what are you most looking forward to this year? There is so much! I can’t wait for the International Student Welcome Programme followed by Freshers’ Fortnight, and the chaos that will ensue afterwards! I’m also looking forward to working with our recently honoured PC Harvey Watson to increase safety provision for students on campus, as well as working with DSU to create a joint private accommodation scheme, including a ‘Rate your Landlord’ system! It’s quite a big decision to run for a Student Officer post, what made you do it? After being so involved with the Union during my time as a student I wanted to give something back and make changes I felt the Union needed and that I could achieve. And I wasn’t ready to leave Leicester yet!
1412-FreshMag_2011.12.indd 14
What does your job involve? I am in charge of the welfare of all students, as well as dealing specifically with international students. This includes aspects such as accommodation, finance, health, and safety issues. I do a lot of case work with students, as well as run welfare campaigns. If you ever have any problems, no matter how big or small, my office is always open for a chat!
I wasn’t ready to leave Leicester yet! What would you add to your Freshers ‘Must Do’ List? I want to make sure every student knows where they can go to for welfare advice and support, for instance services such as the University’s Welfare department, the Choices sexual health clinic, the free legal advice service Pro Bono, and myself! Why did you get involved with the Union? I came to University wanting to get involved with everything and take every opportunity possible. I got involved from day one by joining the Women’s Rugby team, the English society, and getting elected on to Union Parliament in my first year. Ever since then my life at University has been non-stop, having done everything from being a RAG calendar model to skydiving to playing rugby at the Tigers’ stadium!

What’s the best thing about being a student? The endless possibilities of what to cook at 4am after a night out, currently I’m partial to a cheese and pesto toastie. Why did you choose Leicester? The feel of the campus, how everything just fell into place as I walked round, everyone seemed so nice, the atmosphere was great! What do you miss most from home? The beach, Leicester is just landlocked. It’s quite a big decision to run for a Student Officer post, what made you do it? I’ve always been a campaigner and the student body is powerful when it works together, I can’t think of a better way to make a difference than being an activist within the student movement. What does your job involve? I run the priority campaigns in the Union, so in previous years this would have been about Tuition Fees, Fair Trade, and going back even further Free South Africa, LGBTQ rights and student representation. I also look at student engagement and democracy in the Union, making sure all students are involved in what we do.

currently I’m partial to a cheese and pesto toastie What would you add to your Freshers ‘Must Do’ List? Talk to the person that looks lonely, buy them a drink and make a new friend. What do you want to achieve during your time in office? Make the Union a safe and ethical place to be in, a place that our students are proud to call their own! How did you get involved with the Union? During my first 2 years I was really active within the campaigning groups and media and in my third year I ran for Union Parliament, it was really in my third year that I realised just how powerful the student body is when it comes to making a social difference.

Hello, so who are you and where are you from? I’m Alex Nutt from Guildford. What’s the best thing about being a student? The best thing about being a student is that you have so much freedom to do anything! There’s so much opportunity to get involved you won’t have time to do everything! There’s too much choice!
I help you make improvements to the University Why did you choose Leicester? When I came to the University open day I knew it was for me. Because it’s such a great, friendly campus and it is one of the best universities in the country. The Students’ Union also has so many opportunities to get involved with anything and everything. It has a wide range of societies and sports clubs which was ideal for me as a badminton player. Freshers’ is nearly upon us, what are you most looking forward to this year? I am looking forward to going out and meeting all the new students so I can shape what I do and what I campaign for around core, topical student issues.
1412-FreshMag_2011.12.indd 16
It’s quite a big decision to run for a Student Officer post, what made you do it? Because I wanted to represent students at the University level so I can fight for real improvements to your education experience. I also wanted to give something back to the Union. I have been involved with the Union since day one and committed so much time to it. I have so many ideas that will improve the Students’ Union and I wanted to run for the position so I could devote all my time to it, to make improvements and ensure that this Union is exceptional in everything it does. What does your job involve? I am the principal point of contact between the Students’ Union and the University. It is my job to support you through any academic problems you may have and create educational campaigns to improve your educational experience. I also look after all the course reps who help you make improvements to your courses and the University at large. What would you add to your Freshers ‘Must Do’ List? You need to get involved with as many things as possible and make as many friends as you can! Developing friendships is great at University and most of your friends you make now will last with you throughout the rest of your life. University goes past so quickly so my best advice is to take advantage of every opportunity thrown at you! University is a great place where you can try so many things you have never tried before. So try something new and just have a great time whilst doing it!

Learning something new everyday (or at least attempting to) Why did you choose Leicester? its a big city that has a lot to do whilst not being so over whelming that I feel lost coming from a smaller town. And the engineering building is shaped like a boat which is pretty cool. Freshers’ is nearly upon us, what are you most looking forward to this year? The summer ball, I have big plans for this year. It’s quite a big decision to run for a Student Officer post, what made you do it? I’ve absolutely loved working on the bars for the last 3 years and the whole management team are great so I thought running for sabb would give me the opportunity to work with them to bring the fantastic experience I’ve had on both sides of the bar to all the students at Leicester. How did you get involved in the Union? Like many of you will, I got involved by going to the nights out during Fresh Festival. During Freshers I struck up friendships with some of the Fresh Reps who introduced me to Union Parliament which I was soon elected on to and being as nosey as I am, I loved always knowing what’s happening!
1412-FreshMag_2011.12.indd 17
I want to bring the fantastic experience I’ve had on both sides of the bar to all the students at Leicester. What would you add to your Freshers ‘Must Do’ List? Go to as many club/society events as possible at the start of the year, this is the best time to do it before your course kicks in. If you only end up going to one club for the rest of the year, at least you’ll be able to say you tried lots of different things! I know you’ve got many plans for this year, what do you want to achieve most this year? Improve communication between staff and students and between all staff members. Last year we had some fantastic events held in our building but people didn’t always know about them so I want to make sure every one knows about all things union related so no one is missing out.

What’s the best thing about being a student? Is having a unique window of opportunity; being both constantly intellectually stimulated, with the simultaneous opportunity to explore avenues of adventure and develop your life skills.
I miss Cál Ceannann, pigs head and cabbage What do you miss most about home? Cál Ceannann, pigs head and cabbage, the hill-tops of Conamara, and the cold and crisp Christmas nights. Freshers is nearly upon us, what are you most looking forward to this year? Freshers fortnight, Union Awards, Union Parliament, Summer Ball extravaganza, getting my teeth into Exec led campaigns, and of course meeting all of the societies, clubs and media groups. There’s, literally, too much to look forward too! It’s quite a big decision to run for a Student Officer post, what made you do it? Well, I have been a student here at the University for the past 6 or more years (since 2005!), in that time I have seen our Students’ Union go through times that are both
1412-FreshMag_2011.12.indd 18
good and bad; I felt that this long running retrospective experience (of being an active member in the SU) gave me the insight and perspective required to steer the SU in the right direction. What does your job involve? It is my job to oversee the strategic and political development of student led activity within the Students’ Union. Whether it be concerning a sports club or society’s funding, through to constitutional changes, long term development, or media related matters; I’m here to provide the structure and leadership in order to develop student groups beyond the microcosm of here-and-now, and instead to ensure growth and development for the future of all clubs, societies and media groups at our SU. How did you get involved with the Union? Honestly?..., I originally got involved in the SU through my love of performance; as a fresher, I joined LUSH, LUST, The Ripple, Public Speakers society, Let Us Play (now called the DJ & Dance Society), and many, many more societies that I genuinely forget the name of now - it was a long time ago! I ended up being a LUSH Radio DJ for the 6 years I have attended the University, and hold the record for the longest running show at the station. What are you going to change this year? Even though our SU is the bees-knees, there is always room for improvement; my main project is to simplify the financial system for our societies and clubs; and ensure there is a long term plan in place for the strategic development of all our societies, media, associations and sports clubs.

Charles du Couedic I have been a Course Representative and Union Officer for the last year. I can honestly say that it has been a really enjoyable experience. There is so much more to being a Course Representative than adding it to your C.V! You have the opportunity to represent your fellow students and assist them with any potential problems they may have, which is always rewarding. Furthermore it is a valuable experience in the sense that it develops your communication and interpersonal skills, which is essential in any working environment. You will meet a wide range of challenges and have the opportunity to support fellow students’ beliefs with the University itself. During the year, you will also have the chance to meet a diverse range of people from a host of departments, and share your experiences with theirs. The Students’ Union will provide assistance in a variety of ways, such as training sessions, and putting you in contact with the Education Department. The Executive Officers (more commonly referred to as Sabbatical Officers), will always be eager to offer their help with any issue you may have. I would definitely recommend being a Course Rep to anyone who is willing and who wishes to be involved with the Student’s Union. It is a fantastic opportunity and you won’t regret it!

I have been a course rep for the last 2 years and loved it! Being a course rep is one of the most valuable roles you can have whilst being at University, you get the opportunity to makes loads of friends because all of the people on your course will know who you are, and most of the staff members will know your name, which is great when it comes to looking for references! As well as this, you learn so many valuable transferable skills that will really make you stand out in the job market. This year, I was voted Course Rep of the year, which looks brilliant on my CV and is such an honour. Also, I was one of the first recipients of the University’s brand new Teaching Partnership Award for 2011. This looks great on my CV as well! I would definitely recommend all course reps who feel like they really make a difference to try for the Teaching Partnership Award, as it is such a prestigious award and will be really valued by future employers. Whilst being a course rep, you get the opportunity to be on Union Parliament as an Academic Officer, which is a fab role to have as you can bring forward proposals that can really change University policy! I would also recommend any future course rep to try out for Union Parliament, you don’t have to be seriously involved or interested in politics, you just need to be keen and care about your University.

Without a doubt the best way to maximize your experience here at Leicester University is to ‘jump in’ to the Students’ Union’s wide ranging, and ever expanding, plethora of societies and sports clubs.
In other words: don’t hold back, get involved – jump into the deep end, as it were! Going to University for the first time can be an overwhelming process (even for the ‘social butterfly’ types). Joining and, more importantly, being actively involved in societies and sporting clubs is the primary way that students build up their friendship network. But the focus of student societies and clubs is not just in the social sphere; involvement is a great way of obtaining key ‘transferable skills’ (as is the current buzzword used these days!) and training in specific fields (such as journalism, campaigning or first aid). Involvement opens up opportunities to be part of epic adventures (both locally and internationally), which frankly, would never be feasible from a financial or logistical point of view, if you endeavored on such adventures alone. Examples include, but are in no way limited to, having your own radio show or featuring in a TV show, learning how to fence, snowboard or surf, and playing the beautiful game at Walkers Stadium, just to name a few. Perhaps most importantly of all, the vast array of societies and clubs that the Students’ Union offer (150+ in fact) provides the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in fields you never conceived of, let alone dreamt of partaking in!
The answer; FRESHERS FAIR – 3rd and 4th October 2011. This is a two-day extravaganza of an event that takes up the entire Students’ Union premises, giving you the opportunity to find out all about the societies, associations and clubs that exist. The best part is that students, just like you or I, run all the societies and clubs. Also don’t forget to check out LEICESTERUNION. COM for a full list of societies, associations and clubs. There is something for everyone. No matter whether your interests lay in Sport or Extreme Sport, Campaigning, Volunteering, Media, Journalism, Performing, Gaming, Recreational, Eating, Drinking, Religion, Politics, Art, Crafts, Academia or indeed just the plain weird or bizarre, there will be a society, club or association which will represent those interests and activities. And in the highly unlikely case that you cannot find a society/club/association that does it for you, then simply SET UP A NEW ONE! (Tax Disc Collecting Anonymous Society or Pillow Fighting Society anyone?) To give you a little peek – and I mean literally just the tip of the metaphorical iceberg that is Student Activities here at Leicester – the following pages feature just some of the 150+ societies, sports clubs and associations that constitute a large part of our Students’ Union. I look forward to meeting you personally in freshers’ week, right here in the Percy Gee; it’s going to be an exciting year… My Best Regards, Fénian Ó Dughaén Student Activities Officer Email: su-activities@le.ac.uk
Now, you maybe thinking; how do I find out about all these societies and clubs?

Our media groups are not just for those budding journalists, radio presenters, producers, DJs, actors, TV presenters, directors, writers and editors out there. Their dynamics and flexibility offer involvement at levels from the gentle to the full on; it is suitable for everyone. From those who wish to have fun, as well as to those who wish to gain invaluable communications experience, all the way through to the future stars of tomorrow’s media world. As with all societies and clubs, find ‘em at Freshers Fair or pop into the Activities Resource Centre!
THE RIPPLE Facebook “The Ripple 2011-2012” The Ripple is the University of Leicester’s student magazine and was first founded as The Wave in 1957. Boasting a potential readership of over 10,000 students, The Ripple really is the place to get your views heard. Divided into sections to meet your interests including University News, Current Affairs, Opinions and Debate, Sport, Music, Reviews, Arts and Creativity, Travel, Fashion, and Health and Beauty, the monthly glossy magazine has something for everyone. Covering everything from events on campus, to the issues affecting each and every student, The Ripple promises to be an essential read; a magazine written by the students, for the students. Not only does The Ripple offer a quality publication for its members each month, but it also offers first hand journalistic experience for those interested in getting their work published. Every student is able to join The Ripple as a society at Freshers Fair to receive emails and updates; additionally any student who wishes to submit work, whether part of the editorial committee or not, will have their articles considered for publication. The Ripple also provides a platform for Leicester students to get their voice heard on matters which are concerning

them or interesting them on a global or local scale, as well as a facility to find out more about the events and activities taking place on campus. The Ripple is a really vibrant publication and we hope to see you involved as soon as possible.
LUST
(Leicester University Student Television) www.youtube.com/user/LUSTelevision We are LUST, an award winning media society full of enthusiastic people who have a passion for everything TV. Famous for our fantastic content, which is accessible to every UoL student, we pride ourselves on attracting regular viewers and most importantly having a fun, dedicated experience whilst doing this. To further the fun-factor of your LUST experience, our excellent socials are also a determining factor as to why joining LUST is one of the best decisions you will make as a fresher. So, what exactly is this fantastic content we here at LUST speak of? Our compilations of your Student’ Union nights out have proved a great hit, but despite how funny interviews with inebriated students are, LUST is recognised for so much more. We work extensively with other student groups and societies, through to the calendar of annual Varsity matches to covering popular events with a view to producing DVD packages. Other productions are focused with the idea of entering our work into categories subject to the National Student Television Awards (NaSTA).
to get in touch with a member of the LUST executive – passionate people who will help you develop your thoughts into something great and most importantly, watchable! The opportunities available for you to get involved with are endless. Whether you see yourself as the charismatic presenter or a confident actor, or perhaps the brains behind the producing and editing of a show, we would like to hear from you. LUST are always on the lookout for new talent and would love nothing more than to welcome you into our station. So, if LUST is where your desire lies, don’t hold back! Find us at Freshers Fair and sign up! We promise you will not forget the experience!
LUSH (Leicester University Student Harmonies) www.lushradio.net
Broadcasting from the top of the Percy Gee Building, LUSH Radio is the University of Leicester’s Student Radio Station. With hundreds of shows, the station features everything from bhangra and metal to folk and dubstep. Since 1997, LUSH has been run by students for students, reaching thousands of listeners across Leicester, and pulling in audiences as far away as Australia, India and California.
NaSTA is an annual occasion, and furthermore the pinnacle event of any student television station’s calendar. Each Easter, all NaSTA affiliated stations come together to celebrate the past year’s achievements, in the hope of walking away with an award which recognizes all the hardwork and dedication their society has put in. The opportunity to meet industry professionals and attend the useful workshops that are hosted, also adds to this momentous occasion.
At the start of each year we look for creative, confident, enthusiastic people to be part of our station, and after joining up at Freshers Fair, you’ll be given all the training needed to produce and present your very own radio show. But it doesn’t end there: You could also find yourself interviewing some of the world’s biggest bands and artists, reviewing live gigs at venues across the East Midlands, or otherwise producing content for our ever expanding website.
We here at LUST are proud to say that we have a constant record of winning a NaSTA award, our most recent victory being that of an award for “Best Fresher’s Coverage 2011”. Other fun and exciting projects we have produced have lead us to enter other categories which focus upon light entertainment programmes, videos to music, documentaries, drama pieces and so on. If you have an idea which fits into any one of these categories, or in fact any other type of idea, do not hesitate
If new music is more of your thing, why not write for the Reviews Team? LUSH receives the latest promos, you hear the tracks before anyone else, and then we publish your reactions to the masses via the LUSH Radio blog. Sound cool? Next year is set to be LUSH Radio’s biggest by far. Whether it’s at one of our live ‘Square Sessions’ in the Students’ Union, or at one of our up and coming club nights, there’ll be a whole host of events for you to get your teeth into, LUSH member or not. LUSH Radio is here to cater to you: Your songs, your sounds, your station.

Associations
Unlike societies and sports clubs, associations tend to focus on the integration of students with the outside world. They usually represent socio-demographic groups, but can also represent specific interests (such as, for example, European Lawyers) or are affiliated with external organizations.
LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans & Queer Association) Welcome all to the University of Leicester LGBTQ Association! We aim to bring together and represent the Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans and Queer students of the University of Leicester by holding a wide range of events throughout the academic year. These include guest lectures, film screenings, trips, meals and of course the occasional tour of the local bars and night clubs! We have our own common room inside the Students’ Union building (complete with squishy sofas!) that is a safe space that any member can use to relax, study and meet other members. Our most popular social event, ‘LGBTeaQ’, is also held regularly in our room, and is a great time to meet new people and have a chat over a cup of tea and a couple of biscuits. As we are a Welfare Association, every member of our committee is friendly, approachable and will be able to point you in the right direction for any advice or information you may need. Whether it be within the University through the Student Welfare Service or externally with services provided by the Leicester LGB&T Centre or the Trade Sexual Health organisation; we have excellent links with all three. The LGB&T Centre for example hosts various groups and support networks that we can help you in contacting. As sexual health and sexual education can be rather grey areas in the LGBTQ community, our committee is able to direct you to any information you may need to be safe and happy.
visit the bars and clubs of Leicester’s gay scene, we also venture further afield to sample the variety that other cities offer. We aim to enlighten our members in the culture and entertainment of the LGBTQ world, but we also want to have fun and help you make the most of your university career! Previously we have held socials to Laser Quest, local restaurants, fancy dress bar crawls, cocktail nights, film screenings and trips to Manchester, Brighton, Birmingham and many more! As a student group, we are naturally passionate about protecting our rights and therefore the rights of LGBTQ people around the world. We will be working alongside the Students’ Union Campaigns and Involvement Executive Officer to organise demonstrations and fundraising events for causes we care about. Previously we have raised money for the National AIDS Trust on World AIDS Day and used our social networking resources to promote worldwide LGBTQ rights campaigns. We’re really keen to expand our campaigning, and are planning some large scale campaigns in the coming year! A large part of the University experience is in education, or it should be! So we try to provide as many interesting and fulfilling educational events as possible. For LGBT History Month in 2011 we held a series of guest lectures covering some really interesting eras for LGBTQ people throughout history, and hope to extend this further this year! Throughout your first year, keep an eye out for our by-elections which will be held so that new members can get involved! We will also be holding meetings to gather ideas for the Association and feedback on past activity. Your feedback is invaluable in helping the LGBTQ Association to grow! We welcome any enquiries about the association, so go ahead and contact us via our Union email address: su-lgbtqa@le.ac.uk. For real time information about events we’re running and what you are going to look forward to when you arrive, join our Facebook group: http://on.fb.me/lgbtqa or follow us on Twitter: @Leicester_LGBTQ . We look forward to seeing you at Freshers Fair, we’ll be the stand with the rainbows! If you wish to sign up more discreetly then contact us at the email address above.
The many great socials we organise reflect the diverse interests of our members. Whilst we often

Sport at Leicester is massive, and is only going to get bigger; the Students’ Union recently signed up to a joint development plan with the University of Leicester itself, in order to capitalize on Leicester’s rise in the intra-University sports leagues (BUCS). Our sports teams are well renowned for their enthusiasm, passion and devotion; our sports clubs meet regularly to take advantage of the epically impressive, and ever expanding, sports facilities the University has offer. Each year in the spring, Leicester teams - from virtually all sports disciplines - gear up in order to spank Demontfort University’s metaphorical bottom, in the grand showdown that is ‘Varsity’. Whether you are just starting to get interested in a sport, or are already a sports fanatic, or indeed if you are prepping yourself up for the Olympic Games in 2012, the diverse range of clubs available will meet all interests.
Surfing in Leicester? Many ask this question, maybe you thought it? It’s not exactly on the coast but you could think of us as being closest to every coast in UK! This year, as well as travelling to new destinations, we have been on more trips than ever holding 4 every term! The ULSC provide the opportunity for students who have never touched a surfboard, through to those who are never seen without one, to participate in the UK’s fastest growing sport.
So what is a weekend like? A typical weekend doesn’t really exist as every trip is incredibly unique. However, if you want an idea of what to expect, it would be something like this; Meeting your car on the Friday evening and starting the journey, don’t worry we promise we wont play Rebecca Black; then arriving at an oasis hours away from deadlines and daily stresses; Soon you will be waking to the sound of voices and alarms, maybe even the smell of cooking before getting ready to surf it out, take it easy and relax on the beach. Post surf is spent however you like, whether this be roaming the surroundings, relaxing or getting a head start for the night ahead! This can be anything from a few drinks, anticipating the waves to a night in the frothing town of Newquay; finally dragging yourself as close to the sea as possible the next day for more surf. And if keen for a sunrise or sunset surf? Don’t worry, someone is already there!
The socials We host some of the best at the University, from quiet films to epic nights out we host events that are more than just another notch on the social calendar, followed by a morning repeating the soon to be famous words ‘never again’. Our first event last year was the Rubix cube social which, proving to be much less frustrating than a real Rubix cube, involved dressing in the 6 colours and swapping at each bar to become one colour by the end of the night – I myself gained a fantastic belt and it proved to be a great way for new and existing members to mix. Our most popular social last year involved the committee dressing up as zombies and in this instance successfully catching members of 2 teams turning them into zombies before they could complete somewhat interesting tasks. Times like these will come thick and fast and you will be sure to relish them and like the rest of us look like a zombie the next day even without the face paint! Greg (Fresher 2010)
The University Championships ( BUCS) Competitive surfing has been a first for us. Last year we had an amazing time at BUCS and won our first competition ‘landlocked’. This September we aim to enter a strong team for the BUCS championship and maybe earn a few points. Unfortunately however surfing isn’t an Olympic sport, yet! But you could represent the UoL in BUCS Twenty-Twelve next year.
Warmer Waters!!! The ULSC will be running its first INTERNATIONAL trip! This December 16th-23rd we will be hitting the shores of Morocco! Getting sweet waves in the day and chilling with friends in the evening, this is set to be a trip to remember. Ideal for beginners with great deals on hire and lessons or more experienced surfers wanting to chill in the greenroom. This World class location is sure to offer something for everyone. With the ULSC you will meet unique people who will become far more than just fellow surfers, so whether you want to start surfing for the first time or continue your passion we are the club to join and not to be missed! We look forward to seeing you at the Freshers Fair Much love, The ULSC.

RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB Named Sports Club of the Year 2010/2011 The Rugby League Club at the University of Leicester is a very approachable sports club that is renowned for its friendly and inviting atmosphere. Joining the club gives new members an excellent opportunity to meet new friends, all of whom share a common interest and purpose. Having celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2009, the club has since created generations of friends for life. New members of any ability or experience are readily welcomed and are encouraged to go to training sessions to really see what the club has to offer them. Training takes place three times a week and from the outset you will be able to watch as you develop your skill level and ability. This is, to a large extent, due to the exceptional coaching team who have a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game which they are keen to impart to every player of every ability. It is through this and also through the dedication of the current members that the club is making great advances in its development and is constantly improving its position within the Midlands competition each year. The social life is a great feature within the club as it allows new individuals to interact and get to know the current members who will be there to welcome you and make you feel part of the club from the start. Social events are organised and held on Wednesday nights, with various themes ranging from shirt and tie socials to joint socials with other sports clubs within the University allowing further opportunities to meet new people and expand your friendship groups. The club is also involved in a tour to Salou in Spain every year and the season ultimately climaxes in May with a one-off game against the ‘Old Boys’; this involves current students of the University playing past players which remains the highlight of the season. The club ultimately strives to promote strong performances and good discipline from all its players that is widely respected by other societies within the Students’ Union and also the teams, which we play throughout the year. Each new player instantly becomes an integral part of the club and remains so during their time at Leicester. Joining the University of Leicester Rugby League Club will be by far the best decision you make in fresher’s week and really makes you part of something with a reputation and history to be proud of.

Campaigns, Politics, Volunteering and Outreach Involvement in the outside political world and outreach to the community at large is vital to the continued fight for our political objectives both as students, and as members of the wider community. The Students’ Union has a non-compromising freedom-of-association policy; democracy - as I’m sure my learned colleague Thom French (Campaigns & Involvement Officer) would tell you - is not just a means to an ends, but an ends in, and of, itself. Our Students’ Union has many campaigning and outreach focused student groups; some are “Political” (in the sense of representing and associating with political parties), some are concerned with human rights (e.g. Amnesty International), some are concerned with socio-political objectives (e.g. Feminist Society, Hope Not Hate, etc), and some are concerned with helping to support charitable work and direct action within the community (e.g. Marrow, UNICEF, RAG, etc). Whatever, the political, social or otherwise related objective our societies provide a broad opportunity for you to integrate and experiment with your political and social beliefs, in addition to helping the wider community through direct and indirect means. Give yourself time at Freshers Fair to search out societies/ associations that represent and reflect your political and social position. Have a look at the suggestions below to get your juices flowing. Involvement in such student groups not only builds invaluable communication skills, but also provides training in how to deal with people in the real world, and allows you to broaden your horizons.
CONTACT VOLUNTEERS Contact is one of the Volunteering associations on Campus. We work to provide you the opportunity to work and get involved your local community. We are the largest student group at Leicester, with over 1600 members, so you’re bound to find friends for life. We are run by students, for students. We quite simply provide a wide range of volunteering opportunities for you to go further.
Why Volunteer? So why should you volunteer? You will meet new people and make new friends. You can gain the experience to land that all important career. Did you know that according to ‘University of Leicester HEACF volunteering project research report’ 73% of students said their employability had increased because they volunteer. This is also a great opportunity for you to test a career, if you’re not sure what is right for you take this opportunity to take it for a test drive. Of course there is the opportunity to help others. Get that feeling of knowing you are selflessly improving somebody’s life, no matter how little or how much you choose to do goes a long way.
Is it for me? Of course! We cater for all students and offer opportunities to suit all needs; we offer over 100 projects every year. You can be involved throughout term time as well as over vacations. We vary our projects to suit your needs, for example we offer long term projects giving you work experience to help achieve your dream career. Popular
1412-FreshMag_2011.12.indd 42
choices include teaching, working in hospitals, with the elderly and so much more. If you want something more relaxed get involved with our flexible short term and one off projects ranging from tidying up the local area to our annual ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ where we do different Christmas themed events in the community. We also offer various social events throughout the year; we aren’t just limited to volunteering. Whatever you want out of your volunteering we will help and support you in achieving it.
What Will You Take Away? Apart from the overwhelming sense of contributing to improving your community, you will leave with a diverse range of transferrable skills (employers love these) that include: communication, motivation, multitasking and more. We also offer the chance for you to gain official awards, earn the Volunteering Award by enrolling and completing 25 hours and two workshops. You will have earned one of the University of Leicester’s most respected awards. Don’t just take our word for it! Listen to what others have to say: “I made new friends and my confidence kept growing” and “It shows that you have an extra ‘wow’ factor”.
How do I Join? By now you are probably thinking that you want to join Contact Volunteers? The great thing is it’s nice and easy, but most importantly of all its free membership. Come and find us at Freshers Fair and we will sign you up. Find us on Facebook- www.facebook.com/ contactstudentvolunteers or follow us on Twitterwww.twitter.com/contactulsv. We look forward to meeting you soon.
ACTIVISTA Founded in 1972, ActionAid has been fighting poverty worldwide for over thirty years. In 2010 onwards ActionAid opened the new decade with one of the busiest years in history, as it took a leading role in the international relief effort following the Hati earthquake and Pakistan floods. More importantly ActionAid doesn’t just tackle the effects of poverty; they also seek to change what keeps people poor. We are the University of Leicester Activista Society, and we want you! Activista is ActionAid’s network of student and youth activist groups in more than 29 countries, coming together from all over the world in order to collaborate and shout, ‘BOLLOCKS TO POVERTY’. If you want to be part of something global, give more than just money, share your ideas and take action then meet us at the Freshers Fair, find out more about us and see what’s in store for you if you choose to become “an Activista!”
15/08/2011 21:28
If you want to join a friendly, approachable society then we are what you’re looking for! If you want to meet like minded people who have a passion for campaigning and socialising whist finding as many ways to make a noise about poverty, hunger, economic injustice, HIV and AIDS and women’s rights you won’t be disappointed! You will gain invaluable skills vital for your CV, as well as making friends and the chance to attend, help organise and take part in some fantastic socials.
Achievements and Activities so far; - London Training: Three committee members attended the Millenium Development Goals conference in Westminster in order to see Nick Clegg speak. - Sophbeck campaign/club night: Combining most students’ love of a drink and a dance we hit local club Sophbeck for our ‘move to the beat, beat hunger night’. As part of our current biofuel campaign this was a great opportunity to socialise and get signatures for our petition. (our 2010/2011 President, Emily wrote to local MP Peter Soulsby regarding this campaign and he agreed to write to MP Norman Baker regarding this issue) - Music your thing? Activista offers members the chance to volunteer at festivals such as Reading and Beach Break Live! Not only that, but keep your eyes peeled and your fingers crossed for more live music campaigns this coming academic year! - Leicester University Debating Association Competition - we submitted a team who reached semi-finals. - Not only do we seek to be actively committed to our campaigns but we also collaborate with other societies who share the same goal. This year we linked up with The University of Leicester Feminist Society for International Women’s day for a joint bake sale in order to raise money for Rape Crisis Leicester. We also collaborated with Sexpression for World Aids Day. So, next year we plan to continue the great impact we’ve already made. Activista will meet informally fortnightly to receive continuous feedback, hear what you’ve got to say and listen to any ideas you may have as to how we can create a campaign with an impact! We also plan to organise more live music events, continue our collaborations with chosen societies, and get as many people as we can shouting ‘BOLLOCKS TO POVERTY!’. To find out more find us on Facebook, (search for ‘University of Leicester Activista Society’ under ‘groups’) or go to www.actionaid.org. We look forward to meeting you!

A Charity with a Twist
Are you passionate about development? Do you want to be part of something innovative that impacts on people across the world during your time at university? Do you seek a better understanding of economics and aspire to gain experience and contacts that will catapoult you into a career in finance/banking/development? Officially, “Acumen Fund is a non-profit global venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty”. Put simply, Acumen Fund is a totally different concept to the practices of conventional charities. Acumen Fund recognises the ability of low income people to solve their own problems, take a person selling anti-malarial bed-nets earning $4 / day. He has no access to loans of any kind, a microfinance loan of say, $50 costs more for a mainstream bank to administer than they would obtain back in interest, so where can he turn to if he wants to build up his own business? Acumen Fund will give him the loan and advise entrepreneurs (should they need it) regarding a business plan, with a cycle of wealth generation, he can not only pay back the loan Acumen Fund has given him but with an expanding business, he can employ more people, breaking the chain of poverty. He, as a low income person has done it all for himself, there is no dependency on charity here, no disrespectful “hand-outs” to a person with pride. Not to mention the decline in the incidence of new malarial infection. Acumen Fund merely provides the starting board.
Why not just provide bed nets for free? The WHO offered to provide these for free to a number of countries, for 1 year, but what happens after that year? What happens the minute SAARS or bird flu hits? Aside from this, the psychology that people never value what they are given for free and don’t want to be told how to live by yet more westerners, it isn’t a sustainable solution, the microfinance offered by Acumen Fund that enables bed-nets to be sold affordably to low income people, is. And it isn’t just bed nets. Acumen Fund focuses on granting loans to entrepreneurs that are bringing goods and services to low income people that they wouldn’t otherwise have, such as clean water, agricultural solutions, electricity, housing and healthcare. So what does all this have to do with Leicester and LUSAF? Charity is changing and we seek to educate our members and beyond about the nature of economics, psychology, cultural differences and politics all tied up in working within development. We run educational events, have guest speakers as well as run fundraising events. Being part of microfinance in its (still) early days will be an enviable asset to your CV and show you have the ability to challenge your own cultural norms. It is a serious society, but the opportunities to meet people from all over the world and have fun are unparalleled.

Recreational, Performance & Beyond The range of societies and clubs available to Leicester students is so wide ranging that we struggle to categorize them all! From Philosophy, to Vegetarianism, from Darts to Curry, from ‘appreciation societies’ to Poker; the weird and wonderful, and beyond… there is something for all tastes, no matter how specific or bizarre. Can you think of an interest that you hold so close but that you thought you could never share with anyone else, because they “wouldn’t understand?” – Well now is your chance to explore, find like minded people, and live the dream.
MUSIC ASSOCIATION The music association co-ordinates all the music societies at the university. We organise joint concerts each Spring as well as nights out, meals, and other socials throughout the year for our members. We are proud to be linked to the Philharmonia Orchestra, and have Philharmonia players give us performance masterclasses. Our societies cover a wide range of musical styles, so there is something for everyone. We will all be at Freshers Fair, so come and find us! Currently the Music Association is made up of;

LEICESTER SABRES – THE GAME SOCIETY Do you like to play games? If the answer to that question is ‘yes’, then the Game Society is for you! Also known as the Leicester Sabres, the society won the award for Best Society last year, in addition to winning best Recreational Society and an award for our annual event, Sabrecon (more on that later). As you might have guessed from our name and our marketing pitch, we play games. These include roleplaying games, collectible card games, wargames and boardgames. We meet on Mondays and Wednesdays and have a variety of games running at any point, including a variety of ongoing roleplay campaigns run by Dungeon Masters from across the society and a cornucopia of events organised by our Wargames Rep and our Magic Rep.
and Geek Ball that are open to other societies. In previous years we have invited members of Rocksoc, the Vikings, LANMA and Compsoc in order to bring you bigger and better socials. Not to mention the the twenty-four hour charity fundraising social, which raises money for various worthy causes (typically local to our city). What do we do other than playing games and having an awesome time? Well, we arrange and attend nationwide events. The SU award-winning Sabrecon is our one-day gaming convention, which is being run for a second consecutive year in March, and will be an epic, epic day. Last year we had tournaments, roleplaying games and talks from various guests (including Graham Davey and his unique perspective on Games Workshop). We also attend the Student National Roleplaying and Wargaming Championships, and we have been ranked 3rd for the last three years running. We’re travelling to Cardiff to attend this year, and hopefully this will be the year we finally take the title home to Leicester! In addition to these two major events, we also arrange trips to other games conventions, including the UK Games Expo held in Birmingham. If you’ve read this far, you’re clearly looking for more information on how to find us and join up. In order to do this you can visit leicestersabres. org.uk, search for “Leicester Sabres Game Society” on Facebook or visit our forum at gamesocforum. proboards.com. We will also have a stall at the Freshers Fair, with members on hand to sign you up and tell you all about our fantastic introductory gaming sessions!
CURRY SOCIETY As you may know, Leicester is one of the best cities in the UK for curry, so much so, that people travel from all over the UK to Leicester, solely for the purpose of eating curry. Leicester has such a large selection of curry houses, it’s hard to know where to begin! So… if you love curry, we’re the society for you! LUSU Curry Society is a great way to meet new people, have a good time and most importantly, eat curry.
We play games from the greats (Dungeons and Dragons and Warhammer 40,000) to the some lesser-known stuff (6d6 and Dystopian Wars), and anything in between. In addition, we also organise an action-packed social calendar throughout the year. The first term usually sees the Fresher’s Bar Crawl and the Hallowe’en bar crawl (with some awesome costuming and fancy dress), in addition to events such as the Geek Quiz
15/08/2011 21:28
We hold trips to some of the best curry houses in Leicester to have fantastic curry at a special discounted price. We also get you great discounts on drinks too. Membership costs £3.50 for the 2011/12 year, which, with our regular trips, makes a great bargain for all us cheapskates! If you would like to join, please come along to see us at Freshers Fair or just turn up to one of our socials – we don’t bite (unless you are dressed up as a Naan bread!). If you want more information please contact us at lusu_currysociety@hotmail.com or visit our website at http://lusucurrysociety.webs.com/ or find us on Facebook.
VIKING SOCIETY The Viking Society is a re-enactment society that recreates (in a safe way!) combat from the medieval period (9th to the early 13th century). This time period includes the battle of Hastings, which we attend every year, to the 4th Crusade. As well as fighting, we also encourage and teach members authentic craft skills such as embroidery, woodworking and how to make chain-maille. We train twice weekly during term time and prepare for ‘the season’ which involves travelling the country having fun at re-enactment events from Dover Castle to the Jorvik Festival in York. We a very friendly and inclusive group; we have members of all ages, both genders and all levels of fitness or previous experience. Degree of involvement is entirely up to the individual. As well as learning basic combat and/or archery, members can learn about the history of the period; authentic clothing, food and behaviour; diversify their craft skills; travel the country; meet new people like them; and get a great chance to socialise. To get you started, we have complete sets of kit in a range of sizes owned by the group to lend to new members. These include authentic clothing, weaponry and shields, archery kit and of course your personal safety equipment! You don’t need to buy the equipment in order to take part. As well as battling across the country in our own group, our re-enactment society has links with a variety of other re-enactment societies across the country. Some are student based at other universities, and others are independent. We also have links with the English Heritage and the National Trust. Aside from the combat and crafts, we also have regular socials outside our training hours that include going out to restaurants, our Christmas meal and a twice-yearly Ball. Our social secretary is very open to suggestions if there are any new events that want organising!
your degree course and from across the year groups.
LEICESTER UNIVERSITY THEATRE LUTheatre is one of the university’s longest running societies. We are also one of the largest societies offering hundreds of opportunities to get involved. We perform three main stage shows each term as well as holding weekly events. Naturally, we have many actors and directors, but there’s more to our society than that; we have our own technical, stage management and costume teams as well as many social members who enjoy the trips we organise. We also have a growing collection of budding playwrights, whose work can be showcased in a variety of ways.
Main Stage
This year we have a lot to be excited about as the Royal Shakespeare Company have associated themselves with three of our productions. Our main stage this year will see Shakespeare, musical theatre and new writing. We also have several vacant slots that anyone is able to propose for. The year will culminate with a nonstop marathon of Shakespeare’s complete works in a bid to raise money for charity.
Socials
LUTheatre boasts one of the most varied and entertaining social sides of all the societies. As well as frequent theatre trips to see all manner of productions, LUTheatre also holds many social gettogethers of both the casual and formal variety. Our regular bar crawls allow for everybody in the society to become more familiar with one another whilst playing games and having a generally fabulous time. And if you can rely on one thing it is that LUTheatre bar crawl costumes will always be amazing! The academic year culminates with our annual Oscars ceremony. Much like the Academy Awards our ceremony celebrates the best of LUTheatre’s talent with much coveted golden Oscars.
Proteus Productions
Pieces range from comedy to serious and we’ve had everything from monologues to musical theatre. There’s something for everyone whether you want to watch, take part or both and experience isn’t required. Proteus provides a forum that helps everyone no matter what their ability. We especially aim to help writers and directors, and the year ahead will include some helpful workshops.
Open House
all Find eties at socishers Fre Fair
Open House, as the name suggests, is open to everyone. It is a place to learn new theatrical skills, gain confidence in the skills you already have and most importantly to have fun. We meet every fortnight and anyone is welcome to run a workshop. This is the perfect opportunity to break down boundaries and make new friends. In past years we have had workshops delivered by experts on stage combat and verbatim theatre. We already have workshops planned on delivering Shakespeare and performing musical theatre.
Outreach
Those that take pleasure in volunteering and giving back to the community can get involved in the LUTheatre Outreach Programme. This programme allows LUTheatre members to work with school age children, helping teach relevant material through the medium of theatre. It is a very rewarding experience As well as being a great way to meet people, joining LUTheatre is also an excellent opportunity to build a theatrical CV. We regularly feature shows in the Sparks
Proteus is a fortnightly showcase of short plays and sketches written, directed and performed by our members. Proteus is invaluable in helping showcase and nurture talent in LUTheatre.
The Viking Society is a great society for anyone with historical or combat interest. It complements a range of other societies; is a great way to travel cheaply, learn a new set of skills which are useful in modern society too; and meet a close set of friends outside

of the Student’s Union, but it is at Union Parliament where they can really use it. The policy that we have created in Union Parliament has made a real difference, far reaching change that affects current students and the future of the student movement in a positive way. At Union Parliament all areas of the student experience are considered and policy is drawn up to enhance the student experience for the better.
Student? You’re important! Students have the power to do amazing things, as individuals we’re clever, together we’re amazing. By working together we can achieve more than working alone, our collective voice is powerful. As a student body, we sit on Union Parliament to make a difference to the student experience and have a wider impact to society. As students we can fight injustice, we can champion new ideas, we can denounce wrong and support the right in society. We add our voice to current affairs of the day with much influence, we shine a light on issues that need to change and scrutinise the University. To do this, we as students sit together on Parliament and create real change for all students in our Students’ Union. Union Parliament is the sovereign elected body of students, made up of 100 representatives from across the University’s four academic colleges. Elected proportionally, these students have an important role in the running of the Students’ Union policy and strategy. All students have a voice in the running
We at Union Parliament have achieved much together, and it’s knowing that we make such a positive difference make Union Parliament so worthwhile. let students revise effectively, equality within sport at our University, greater working conditions for students, we debated the right to have your Thesis published, we organised a student as a candidate for the first elected Mayor election in Leicester, food being available on nights out. Anything can be achieved at Union Parliament and last year was a great example of students using their voice to create a real positive difference. This year, we are looking for students to get active in their Students’ Union and become Union Parliament Officers for another year of making a difference to the student experience. The benefits of Union Parliament are endless, taking an active role in your Union, enhancing the student experience while having something great on your CV. So, take an active role in your Union, make a difference and have your voice heard, many Union Parliament Officers have gone onto great things, including a former NUS President, so help the student movement achieve its full potential and become part of Union Parliament, it’s the best thing you can do on a Tuesday!
