Welcome to the summer issue of HIGHLIGHTS. Yes things are tight and for some of us our clients are watching their spend. It can be very worrying and we must look closely at the way we are working. Jack D Hodge states “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing - that’s why we recommend it daily.” I think this relates well to training! Maybe not daily but regular training will give you new styling techniques, quick-low-cost colour techniques and it will keep you constantly motivated. You will be full of fresh ideas to offer your clients and keep your enthusiasm for work at a much higher level. Do not allow yourself to become despondent. This situation will not last forever and you must be ready to take up the challenge when things improve. Value for Money. It’s what we all want and this year you will find that your FHBF membership has never been better value for money. How can that possibly be? Can things really get even better? Yes they can! Britains Got Talent! The Susan Boyle Factor
As I write this article, everyone is talking about the most watched lady on You Tube – Susan Boyle, the lady who appeared on the talent show “Britain`s Got Talent”. We all assumed that because of her appearance she had no talent at all. Her hair was untidy, she was a little dishevelled and hadn`t a great deal of life experience. But WOW! – she blew us all away when she began to sing! She has a major talent! I wonder how many times we have written clients off because of how they look or what we assume about them? I`m sure we have all made assumptions, true or false about our clients which has affected the way we have treated them. Have you thought that there is no point offering an old lady fashion techniques because she is too old for them? Or never offered your pensioners home use products because they are too expensive for them?
Don`t be caught out by the Susan Boyle Factor! So, how are YOU perceived?
Even more importantly, how many times has a client looked at you and made assumptions about you? Clients are no different from us. They look at your hair, the cut, the colour or lack of it, the shine, they guess how many days since you last shampooed and styled your own hair. They look at your hands, your nails, your combs, your brushes, the products you use. They look at your marketing materials or lack of them, your price lists, your total offer. They make assumptions. Are they making the right ones? Would you make it through to the next round?

In the Hairdressing Industry we have been fighting for years to squash the notion that hairdressers are nonintelligent beings interested only in trash and trivia. Know your clients’ needs Caroline Seyedi is a freelance state registered senior hairdresser and mother of a daughter with autism. Here, she offers her advice on haircuts for children with autism. For children with autism and their parents, a trip to the hairdressers can be incredibly difficult and stressful. Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way a person relates to and communicates with the world around them. People with autism may also experience overor under- sensitivity to sounds, smells, touch and taste.
Autism is a spectrum condition so it affects everyone differently and what works for one child, may not work for another.
your actions in simple language and re-assuring the child. Let them look in the mirror whenever they want to if that helps.
During the haircut
If you are using clippers start with the guard on and run them over your hand to show they won’t hurt. Let the child do the same. Start in an inconspicuous place on the child’s head and do a trial to see if the child can cope.
Difficulties understanding language, being touched, the feel of different textures, smells, fluorescent lighting, changes to their routine, coping with new environments or people, can make a haircut quite a challenge! But with a little knowledge, and a few simple adjustments it is possible to make it a pleasant experience for child, parent and hairdresser.
Distracting the child whilst you cut their hair can help enormously. A TV, games console, favourite toy or story can help focus their attention away from the haircut and help them sit in one place.
Before the haircut
Suggest before the appointment that you work out how to make the haircut a pleasant experience for everybody. The parent will be able to advise you where will be the best place for the child to sit and if there is anything in particular that upsets them so you can make the appropriate adjustments. The parent will know what the child can cope with and what motivates them so it is a good idea to have a talk with them prior to starting. That way you can help the child enjoy their experience and want to repeat it. Book twice the appointment time you would for any other child’s haircut. Try to book the appointment at a quiet time.
It is very important to be patient and calm. Health and safety must be your top priority so it is always best for a second person the child is familiar with to help if possible.
Let the child touch any equipment if they want to, as long as it’s safe to do so, and explain what you are going to do in simple language. Give the child their own mirror to hold and let them use the water spray or comb themselves if it makes them feel more comfortable. Some children with autism may find the sensation of combing or brushing unpleasant and therefore avoid having it done. This means head lice can be a problem. Wet the hair if possible for a more precise cut and to prevent dry loose hair falling on the child, which may cause distress and become itchy. Start by cutting the hair line first. The helper or parent can hold the child’s head if needed. Always hold the ear down and cut with the scissors firmly against the head. Don’t worry if you have to make a few attempts, just keep explaining
Once the hairline is done, work as quickly and safely as possible. If the child and/or parent are getting stressed or anxious, don’t worry it isn’t your fault. If the child becomes too distressed to finish the haircut stop and suggest you try to do more at another time, perhaps in a few days.
Something to think about Demand for hairdressers who can cater for children with autism is huge and the same techniques can apply to other sensory and communication disabilities. Why not adapt an area within your premises and promote your business as an ‘autism-friendly salon’? If you’re freelance why not try contacting your local special needs school and asking if they would like a visiting hairdresser once a term? I’m sure there is a lot of unclaimed business out there!

As the FHBF is in agreement with the initiative to cut the rate of VAT on hairdressing services we are printing this Press Release to keep members informed and you may wish to cast your vote on the website. The entire hairdressing industry has come together in an unprecedented campaign to drive down VAT charged on salon services. The launch of a campaign website this week, www.cutthevat.org sees the professional salon market, trainers, top celebrity hair artists and the freelance sector co-operate for the first time in pursuance of single goal – a 5% VAT rate for hairdressing. The National Hairdressers’ Federation (NHF) devised the campaign and recruited Habia, the government-approved standards setting body for the hair, beauty, nails and spa industry, along with the Fellowship of British Hairdressing and the Freelance Hair and Beauty Federation. The launch of the campaign website, www.cutthevat.org comes after Stephen Timms, financial secretary to the Treasury, wrote to NHF president Harry Walker earlier this year indicating the government would consider a lower rate of VAT for hairdressing if European finance ministers on the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (Ecofin) agreed all member states should have the option to apply reduced VAT to labour-intensive industries, including hair salons, on a permanent basis. Barely weeks later, Ecofin gave the go-ahead putting the ball firmly in the UK government’s court. The majority of hairdressing salons are labour-intensive small businesses which means most of the service is time-related. VAT in the hairdressing business is a tax on the customer rather than a product purchased such as an MP3 player or a computer. The threshold for registering VAT at the high level of £67,000 creates an uneven playing field which leads to identical services having two prices, making the government responsible for unfair competition. Everyone would win with a VAT reduction to 5%: customers would get more value; hairdressing staff would see more demand for their services leading to more job opportunities and training development; salon owners would no longer act as tax collectors and would have more money to develop their businesses and boost the local economy, and the government benefits because, as a Dutch hairdressing study shows, deeply reduce VAT results in more jobs, more apprentices, improved business, which boosts the economy, increases
the number of businesses registered for VAT, resulting in more responsible business bringing in at least as much VAT overall. Harry Walker, NHF president, said: “We have argued for nearly 20 years that hairdressing salons are a special case and deserve a lower rate of VAT. Now through CuttheVAT, we plan to lobby government harder than ever before and win the support of the general public. Such an approach would be a major boost to the general public who use these services as well as to businesses both in the short term and the long term.” Eileen Lawson, NHF secretary general said: “This is the first time all sides of the hairdressing industry have come together to present such a strong argument for change. The Treasury said it would consider our plea if Ecofin gave it the mandate to do so. It has done so. Let us see if Mr Timms is true to his word.” Alan Goldsbro, chief executive officer of Habia, said: “The reduction to 5% would safeguard employment and apprenticeships, a vital issue on which the government makes great claims and promises. This is the country’s most successful apprenticeship sector and lower VAT would increase employment opportunities within it. The government must sit up and take notice if we are not to suffer a downturn in the number of trainees. A 5% rate of VAT for our sector is for the long-term and not designed to be merely a short-term fix.” Sheila Abrahams, director of the Freelance Hair and Beauty Federation, said: “The professional freelance fraternity feels strongly that hairdressing services should not incur the full 15% VAT rate. As a labourintensive service sector, hairdressing is a special case and deserves the Treasury’s careful consideration.”

Risk assessments don’t apply to me! As a freelance hairdresser or therapist, you may feel that because you work alone the majority of health and safety regulations and issues would not impact on you. What risks do I face – there’s only me? Although you are not required to undertake written risk assessments and you do not have a work base (i.e. salon) it is still essential that you are aware of the hazards and risks associated with your work, to protect your own health and safety and of those affected by your actions.
What risks do I face?
There are a number of issues which you will need to consider when running a freelance business. Here are a few examples.
I work alone
Do you have a system in place to ensure you are safe? Your safety is paramount and it is essential that when you leave your home you plan your journeys and that you have left information about your intended visits, contact numbers and proposed timetable. Ensure your mode of transport is well maintained and always carry a mobile phone.
I carry all my equipment
You will find that when working freelance you are required to carry your salon with you. All your equipment needs to be transported between locations and this can mean handling heavy baggage. It is vital that you take care of your back. Make use of trolleys or wheeled equipment to minimise the load and choose lightweight, portable equipment where possible.
I work with electrical equipment
You can ensure that your electrical equipment is well maintained and PAT tested (Portable Appliance Testing) by a competent person, yet you have no control over the fixed installation you are relying on at the client’s premises. It is therefore good practice to carry a Residual Circuit Breaker (RCB) and to use this with each appliance. An RCB will ensure that the electricity supply is broken when a fault is detected and can save you your life. 30 HIGHLIGHTS
I carry flammable products around in my car
Many of you will carry products within your vehicles which are flammable. This becomes a hazard, particularly in summer months, if left rattling around your car or left lying on the back parcel shelf. Always make sure that you place your products in a suitable container and store them in the car boot to ensure they are both out of sight and away from direct sunlight. On very hot days try to park in the shade or ensure you take all your products with you to avoid them overheating.
I use sharps
If you undertake treatments which involve the use of sharps (needles, piercing equipment, razor blades etc) you must ensure that you dispose of them in a suitable sharps container which can be sealed and taken to a registered site for disposal by incineration. Your sharps equipment and container must never be left unsupervised. These are just a few examples of the risks you face in your day to day workload. I’m sure if you think through the tasks you undertake you will find many more. It is essential that you go through this thought process and identify where the hazards are and how you, or your client may be affected. What do you currently do to minimise those risks and then ask yourself if there is anything else you could do. Protect yourself and those around you. Stay healthy and safe. Acne Necrotica Miliaris I had a patient in the clinic a couple of months ago complaining of a sore, itchy scalp. It was one of those cases that upon examination I thought ouch! His scalp was extremely red, looked very angry and there were several pustules visible. It was evident he had been scratching (I defy anyone with an itchy scalp not to scratch!). He had been diagnosed with folliculitis and had been prescribed a scalp lotion, but had been given no further advice on what to avoid. While the patient is scratching the condition will never recover. I diagnosed acne necrotica miliaris, which although is similar in some ways to folliculitis, has different causes. Folliculitis is generally caused by dry razoring, short haircuts, and dry skin, scratching etc. whereas acne necrotica miliaris may be devoid of a primary cause or may be due to poor health, bad diet or digestive/ intestinal problems. It may be exacerbated by the presence of staphylococcus aureus on the scalp and also scratching. Patients may also be under extreme emotional pressure. Acne necrotica miliaris commonly affects the forehead and hairline but can affect the whole scalp. Pustules are cone shaped and eventually they crust over, which when shed may leave a depressed scar. This condition is most likely to affect men over the age of 25 and may follow other skin conditions such as seborrhoeic
eczema, contact dermatitis or boils. If untreated, the condition may run a long course over many years. Any scarring patches will be permanent therefore patients often visit the clinic complaining of hair loss initially. With my patient, I administered an immediate treatment of a sulphur and salicylic acid ointment followed by anti-microbial shampoos. I then applied Silver Shield gel, which is a natural topical antibiotic, needed to be applied topically twice daily therefore I sent my patient home with some. After the first treatment there was immediate relief and the scalp was reduced to a pale pink colour. Once the soreness had been reduced we then worked on reducing the itching in order that we could stop the scratching. At the time of writing this, I am still carrying out treatments on my patient although we are now doing these every two weeks instead of weekly. There has been a marked improvement and what we are looking to achieve is management of this condition because it is unlikely that we can cure it completely. It is important to keep an eye on the scalp and if needed I would refer the patient to the doctor for an antibiotic treatment.

FHBF Challenge Cup Winner In A Cowboy Hat? Sue O’Sullivan is a worthy winner of the FHBF Challenge Cup, sponsored by Denman, once again! She organised a sponsored walk and with the full support of her Manchester group memebrs. It took place on a very cold day in February and they raised over £1000.00 for HABB. Sue organised the whole event and to help raise the money she devised a sponsorship form with details of HABB to show to their clients plus details of the walk they were going to do. They did a four mile walk, but had to take a slightly different route from the original plan because of the weather. After the walk she told us “We had a great time, although sometimes it was a bit dicy under foot. There were nine of us, as Lauren brought her niece. We should raise well over £900 by the time we get all the money in. (Gary was fab and got over £700 of sponsors in his own right). We all met at Lyme Park and will probably be aching tomorrow. I am starting to ache now!!!!!” She also said: “I have been told by the rest of the group that if we did win the Challenge Cup I had to take my cowboy hat to Inspirations.” Well Sue we expect to see you waering it! Wll done to you and all of your groupd for raising such a fantastic amount of money. It was over £1000.00!” So now the challenge begins again! Will it be you or you with your group who win next? Another great day at the hob Academy in Camden Lock. I attended my first course here in November for Creative Cutting and could not wait to come back. Since my last visit Akin, Christel and the art team picked up three British hairdressing awards. It’s so great to tell your clients that you have been trained by the best hairdressers in the country. Unfortunately there were only five of us on the course and only two of us stayed for the whole day. In the morning we watched two demos, one blonde, one red, and talked about consultation. This is such an invaluable part of hairdressing and sometimes we get stuck in our ways and always ask the same questions. Christel showed us how hob do their consultations. It is done in an emotional way and is dependant on the way the client is ‘feeling’ about their hair. So instead of asking what would you like done today, you would ask how do you feel about your hair colour? This works really well, I’ve done this with all my clients this week. We also learnt about what ‘tribe’ the client belongs to, fashionista, rock chick etc. Has anyone ever consulted with a Laura Ashley catalogue instead of a shade chart? Fascinating stuff! You’ll have to book on the course to find out more.Christel is quite rightly the British hair colourist of the year, she really knows her stuff. She is calm and patient, she answered all our questions thoroughly. She’s a real asset to hob and it’s a privilege to share her knowledge. Her colour mixtures are unusual and amazing and make you realise lots of different possibilities. Things change so quickly in hairdressing and we all need to keep up to date with fresh ideas. Not only for our clients but also for ourselves, to keep the passion! She gave us so much knowledge. We talked about skin and eye colour and I feel absolutely certain what will suit my clients now. She also gave us five different mixes to tone blonde hair. We know how to achieve milk, biscuit, champagne, vanilla or beige blonde. Brilliant! We covered so much new stuff and went over and refreshed old stuff. Went to Wagamama for lunch. It’s just round the corner and was gorgeous. Highly recommended for fab noodles. After lunch, Lisa did a total colour change. I used magma to lift and tone and colour touch. I really recommend this course. Top tip when you get to Camden is walk towards the lock past Jamestown Road and when you see Starbucks on the left walk down past it and hob is near it on left. Thank you to all the hob team and to FHBF for organising and keeping us informed of these great courses. Ed’s Note: This course was almost cancelled due to lack of support from members. Fortunately hob generously ran it to the absolute delight of those who attended. The report says it all. And remember the FHBF warning: USE the courses or you will LOOSE them!

Poole Dorset, March 16th 2009 – Report from Carol Bull I decided only a week before the course was due to phone up and see if there was a place available; I was told it was full but two days later I was booked on the course. On the journey to Poole I felt nervous and excited. When I walked into the training room I was greeted by Julie who was our tutor; she was very friendly and welcoming also nine other hairdressers. We helped ourselves to a drink ready to start the course prompt at 10am. Julie introduced herself and told us a little about herself then we took in turns to do the same. Julie described the three hair cuts she was going to demonstrate to us asking us if we had asked questions. She started with the razor cut allowing us to swarm around her as she did the haircut taking notes asking questions and photos. Suddenly I was beginning to feel all the inspirations again and could not wait to see her do the other two hair cuts which were also fabulous. We had a short lunch and then ready to start on our head blocks, choosing the hair cut we most wanted to learn from. I haven’t felt so up lifted for a while even though I still have great passion for my hairdressing .Julie was fabulous; at hand all the time giving us all the confidence about the hair cuts we were doing .I was on a high with the cut I did and thinking why has it taken me so long to do a course, it is a confidence issue I guess but this is the beginning for me. Patrick Cameron Long Hair Workshop 8th April 2009
Wednesday 8th April was the day before my birthday, and what a fantastic early birthday present I had, spending the day with Patrick Cameron! I was really excited at the promise of a “Master-class” with the “Maestro”! A cloudy morning in Luton turned into a fantastically sunny day, both outside and inside the venue, with Patrick’s contagious enthusiasm brightening up the room! Within a few moments of being there, I felt like I had known him for years, chatting and having a coffee, before we began our day. We started with Patrick asking us all what “issues” we had with long-hair and what kind of things we would like to achieve; such as how to create an unkempt style that didn’t just look a mess, or how to add extra length to the hair without the bride having to grow her hair for 2 years before she got married! Patrick then told us that he was going to show us four different styles, a beautiful, sophisticated style, a textured, organic style, a “Bardot” bouffant with a “cheat pleat” and how to turn long hair into a short textured bob - very clever! Two in the morning, then lunch (yes that was included and very nice it was too!) and then another two in the afternoon. We worked along with Patrick, taking each style step-by-step. He would demo a step, then we would follow it, and so it went on until the style was complete. The whole style was broken down into “bitesized” pieces that were easy to follow and quite simplistic in technique, but the results were stunning! All through the day we were encouraged to ask questions and we were given lots of tips and ideas on general long hair styling and also how to prepare the hair properly before starting. He allowed us to take photographs, and gave one-to-one help if we were struggling and encouraged us every step of the way to take ownership of our creation. Although we were all doing basically the same style, each one was different as everyone put their own personality stamp on it. Each technique we learned could be adapted and tailored to many different situations. Unfortunately, before I knew it, the day was over – all too soon for me. I had a wonderful day and I would encourage anyone who is lacking in confidence with long-hair styling, to spend a day doing one of Patrick’s courses. You will certainly benefit from his expert tuition, and although it might seem expensive, it is an investment that will definitely add value to your business. Patrick is an extremely generous tutor, willing to share all aspects of his wonderful imagination with us. He is a fantastic teacher, and great communicator, who creates a comfortable environment for learning. With his natural talent and flair you feel relaxed and confident in your ability to succeed. And, as well as all that, he is a true gentleman. I feel privileged to have met and trained with him and can’t wait to have the opportunity again! Katie Zapletal
