6RA99A
The local pixação culture in Rio de Janeiro dates back more than 30 years and has been a fertile ground for grafitti and for many self taught artists that now represent their city internationally. 6ra99a’s work is shaped by many experiences. As a native of the cidade maravilhosa, Rio de Janeiro, 6ragga was introduced to the universe visual language through skateboard culture and hiphop culture. The visual language that he knew that was once dictated by food packaging , comics, and television , were replaced by graffiti. As a member of the Rio based Naçao crew, 6ra99a worked in the favela’s using graffiti as a transforming agent. Through his work in the favela Vigario Geral, he raised the notion that as an artist it is not only about mastering your skill, but that it is even more important to be able to multiply your knowledge by sharing it with those who have and know even less. As an independent artist 6ra99a has worked in Chile, Berlin, Netherlands since 1998. He also works in film and advertising. His work has identity that is Brazilian, but at the same time universal. Gradually 6ra99a replaced the figurative by the abstract, and added movement, color, pixels, vectors, midi sound, and improvisation to his work. All these layers serve as fragments and patterns and the portrayal of urban development. For more information go to www.myspace.com/6ra99a

THE PROJECT
Ever since graffiti entered the art gallery, artists have struggled to capture the true character of their work onto canvas. It has proven to be a difficult task to maintain the special quality and energy that graffiti has in an urban environment, when it is translated to canvas. The Ultra de la Rue foundation and creative agency AFARAI collaborated with Rio based artist 6ragga in this special project; Graffiti Conquers Canvas. Alongside 6ra99a’s personal process to go from figurative based graffiii to abstract work, he started to experiment with techniques that would enable him to capture the energy that his work had in the urban environment onto canvas. This new way of working is in now full motion. And during his stay in Amsterdam in August of 2009 6ra99a shared his new technique for the first time outside of Brazil. A blank wall on the Java eiand was covered with canvasses. The wall and the canvasses are equal to each other and therefore capture the same energy and quality as the graffiti piece on the wall. We would like to thank Karski, Thomas Nijhuis and Nowhere, all the kids and other neighbors on the Java eiland for supporting us with your enthusiastism during the making of this special project.
